Is Airstream reliable?

Across rated models, Airstream averages a 4.4/5 ForCar Reliability Score, with 17 models rated 4★ or higher. Each model is scored from NHTSA crash-test safety, recall frequency and the share of owner complaints involving a crash, fire or injury — not user reviews.

Airstream competes in the premium travel-trailer and Class B motorhome segments at price points 30-100% above mainstream RV brands. The brand's positioning emphasizes lifetime durability, distinctive aluminum styling and resale value — vintage Airstreams from the 1960s-1970s often sell for higher prices than they originally cost. The Basecamp competes with the Polydrop, the Bambi competes with smaller travel trailers from Forest River and Coachmen, and the Atlas/Interstate compete with Winnebago Travato/Era and Roadtrek in Class B+ motorhomes.

How to read a Airstream VIN

Every Airstream built since 1981 carries a unique 17-character VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). It encodes where and when the vehicle was made, its engine and body — here's what each part means:

FIG.05
1–3 · WMI1AB
4–8 · VDSCM826
9 · Check5
10 · YearR
11 · PlantA
12–17 · Serial004352
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Airstream and the country it was built in (real Airstream codes below).
  • VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled it.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

The remaining digits — engine (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard. For the full year-code table, country codes and where the VIN is stamped, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

About Airstream

Wally Byam built his first travel trailer in his Los Angeles backyard in 1929 and founded Airstream in 1931 to manufacture them commercially. The 1936 Clipper, designed by Hawley Bowlus (formerly chief designer of the Spirit of St. Louis), introduced the polished aluminum semi-monocoque construction that defines Airstream to this day. The 1955 introduction of the Caravan club organized international Airstream caravans that crossed Africa, the Americas and Europe through the 1960s. Thor Industries acquired Airstream in 1980.
