How to read a Buick Terraza VIN — every digit explained

Every Buick Terraza carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

FIG.02
1–3 · WMI1XX
4–8 · VDSCM826
9 · Check5
10 · YearR
11 · PlantA
12–17 · Serial004352
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Buick and the country it was built in.
  • VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Terraza.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
17 CHARS·SOURCE SAE / ISO 3779 · NHTSA vPIC

Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Terraza, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

I was involved in an accident and had front end damage. The air bag sensor and light are on indicating that the air bag deployed; however, it did not. We have also experienced electrical problems as well with the van. The sliding door chime comes on randomly when i we are driving. Work had to be done previously on the wiring. Occasionally i hear rattling noises from the front end of the vehicle when i drive. The van also shakes excessively when approaching speeds over 45-50 miles per hour when i put on the brakes. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated the headlights flickered when the vehicle was driven 0-60 mph. When the vehicle was taken to the sales/service dealer, the problem could not be recreated. The voltage regulator was replaced, but the problem continued. The lights failed to remain bright enough to see well at night. The computer programming was reflashed. The vehicle also had an ongoing issue with the starter, sliding door opening by itself when the vehicle was parked or while idling in park. On one occasion, the child passenger fell out of the vehicle when the door opened. There were no injuries sustained. There was a problem with the steering which resulted in the contact side swiping a mailbox post on the side of the road. At a later date when the vehicle was parked in the garage, the vehicle caught on fire. There were no reports taken by the police or fire department. The manufacturer was notified and the service dealer towed the vehicle back to the dealership.

Tl* the contact owns a 2005 buick terraza. While driving 5 mph and attempting to make a right turn, the steering wheel and brake pedal seized. Also, the abs and traction control indicators illuminated. The contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a fire hydrant. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer (ron smith buick gmc 1900 auto center drive, merced, ca 95340), but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 84,000.

2007 Terraza

The abs traction control is now coming on all the time. I understand this has been a big problem for buick. They have not fixed any problems on these. Wish they would recall them for this problem as this is not safe. It comes on going down the road and makes a funny noise. This van has had so many problems that it should be recalled.

2007 Terraza

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 buick terraza. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the brakes engaged independently. Once the speed decelerated to 15 mph, the brakes released and the vehicle functioned properly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection but they could not diagnose the cause of failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000. Updated 12/04/13*lj the consumer stated that failures occurs at any speed. It is most alarming at speeds of 65-79. The dealer advised to replace the ebcm and bpmv valve to determine if that will repair the vehicle. *js

2007 Terraza

As i took off from a stop light, the van jerked so hard , it felt as if it was hit from behind. The next light within 5 miles, the same thing from a stop. A few days later it was much worse and the service stability control system code came up. After having it checked( immedialely), there was no code found in the vans computer. It didn't show that it ever came up. This could be fatal, especially at high speeds. When the code comes up and a mechanic can't get a reading to address the problem. Doesn't that indicate a problem ?

2007 Terraza

I bought a 2007 terraza in april of last year. I have had nothing but trouble from the start. The brakes started making noise in the first week. The dealer cleaned the pads, but that did not work. They eventually replaced them ,but it still squeals. Then the emergency break light would come on even though the brake was never used, and the cruise control would not engage. I brought it back again. They said that these problems were related and it had to do with wiring. The back end was making a terrible thumping sound every time i would go over the slightest of uneven surfaces. They told me the gas tank strap was loose, and they tightened it ,but it did not solve the problem. I took it back and insisted that a technician ride with me to hear the sound. Long story short on this problem, they said they had to call headquarters and many terrazas have the same problem. They had to replace the whole back axel, and had the van for two weeks. After that, i too had trouble with the automatic doors coming open for no apparent reason. Twice, i came out of the store to find m y door wide open. I count myself lucky since it was better than them opening while driving with my kids. Back again. I was told they recalled the doors, but i cannot find any record of a recall on the web. I am calling again today because i have had trouble lately with the van not wanting to start on at least four occasions or starting but wanting to die when put in gear. When i bought the van, it was a program car and had 20,000 mi. It has been 9 mos. And now has 30,000 miles. Should i be experiencing this many problems on a vehicle with only 30,000 miles??? I haven't with any other car. Could i have a lemon??? I certainly would not recommend a terraza to anyone!!!! The service people have been pretty accommodating and fixed most of the problems, however, i'm a little scared of the safety issues here. What else might be wrong that will creep up later?? *tr

2007 Terraza

2007 buick terraza. Stability system/traction control/abs causes front brakes to engage without warning. This has occurred no less that 25 times. Speed at time of incident has been from 10 to 55 mph. Ratcheting sound occurs (same as when traction control applies in slippery conditions); front tips down as left brake applies; vehicle pulls hard to the left. The only way i can drive is to pull the fuse, leaving abs, tc, and ss off. Dealer has tried to fix, gm customer service became involved briefly, but i still drive without major safety features, or take my chances on abrupt speed changes, and lane changes. Not something i enjoy on the dan ryan in chicago, when the flow of traffic is above speed limit and chicago drivers use 5 feet as a following distance. I have found from the internet that other gm cars have had this same problem. I cannot believe that gm has never investigated this. I really like the car, but random braking surprises are disturbing. *tr

2007 Terraza

We have a 2007 buick terraza cx with 11,000 miles, which was our worst mistake. It was a program vehicle. We have continually had problems with the automatic door malfunctioning. It has been taken apart and everything replaced and still it does not want to shut. The service traction light comes on along with the pump at a time when it wants to. Usually when the dealer is closed. Then it goes off without throwing any codes. The engine is riding rough but the computer shows nothing. The gas mileage is really down. We have been in contact with bbb autoline and illinois attorney general. There is a serious problem with this door. It is a matter of time before it decides to open while i am driving with my children. I have had it into the dealer probably over 30 times or more. The records show just when something was replaced but not when the dealer tried to fix it knowing they would not get paid. I have done my own investigation and found this has been a continual problem since 2005 in buicks and chevrolets and others with this door. There is a major problem that needs to be addressed. Their (gm) fix is the sensors but i have had them replaced and still it does not work right. I just want gm to take it back and try to find the major problem to be able to fix all the others with this problem. This is probably falling on deaf ears like everything else we've tried to do. We live on one income while homeschooling 3 kids and taking care of a mother-in-law with alzheimers. I need a safe dependable vehicle and this one is not. Please help us. *tr

Is this a recall problem.

I bought this vehicle in feb. 2015. About a week after purchase i was going to work one night and the vehicle suddenly veered to the left and brakes locked. The stability light then came on. I pulled over and shut the van off and restarted it . No light was on then. About one month later it did it again. This time i was going about 50 miles ph. A car behind me almost hit me from behind due to the sudden stop.another month went by before it started doing it again. This time it veered into the path of a semi tractor trailer. I then called the dealership and they agreed to have it fixed. I got it back a week later and it still has the same issue. This problem is going to cause a major accident and hopefully no one gets killed!!!!!! Buick needs to recall these vans immediately.

Purchased a 2007 buick terraza in 2008 with 10000 miles on it. One owner. Now i know why. I am on a first name basis with the service department that tries to fix my problems. The power sliding doors are unsafe and a nightmare. Have stood in pooring rain, freezing temps, and snow trying to get a door to close. Has been in the shop at least a dozen times which isn't much fun with 4 kids and 4 carseats.have been stuck along highways and interstates with a door that wont close.not safe!!!!!! I am also on my 3rd or 4th radio in this van. Everytime it goes out the dvd player wont work so i have to take it back again to have this fixed.time is way past due for a recall on these vehicles. If anyone knows anyone looking for a slightly used vehicle i have a 2007 terraza for sale...lol. *kb

My grandson's car seat sits by those doors, thank god hasn't fallen out!!! I've googled and have seen hundreds of the same complaints ignored. The vehicle has been in for repair multiple times per door, at one point i was told by the repair technician, as i handed him pieces of the door mounting, that it is a good thing i didn't open it one more time as the door likely would have fallen off! I have returned to my vehicle numerous times to find one of the sliding door mysteriously open. Due to ongoing nightmare of the doors opening i am careful to confirm the doors are closed and locked prior to leaving my vehicle, however they slide open on there own for no reason. The doors open mysteriously when the car is being driven, alarms ring signally doors are ajar when they are not, and/or fail to close with no confirmed obstruction. Once i am able to "close the door" and drive away the odds are 50/50 that the next bump i hit in the road that door will open. I was involved in an accident and had front end damage. The air bag sensor and light are on indicating that the air bag deployed; however, it did not. We have also experienced electrical problems as well with the van. The sliding door chime comes on randomly when i we are driving. Work had to be done previously on the wiring. I have had nothing but trouble from the start with our car's stability system. The back end was making a terrible thumping and grinding sound every time i would go over the slightest uneven surfaces. There have been multiple repairs made including replacing right rear bushing, rewelding of an unknown part on the right rear and the stabiltity/abs systems repaired multiple times. Yet, the car continues to have suspension problems. It has a unstable, wobbly ride especially on the interstate. Among other things i've also had a wheel senor replaced. We bought a buick terraza conversion van and have come to find out that they have a problem with the rear end that affects the stability of the car. I called braun mobility about a recall for the suspension problems and informed them of the multiple repairs. Superior mobility inspected the car again and has been my ongoing contact for problems with the car.they referred me to beck auto service who has done must of the repairs. Early on, shortly after we purchased the car, there was some sort of wiring problem that caused the "check engine" light to continually come on which was repaired by andy mohr gm dealer. To add insult to injury, i've had trouble lately with the van not wanting to start because the key won't turn in the ignition. In addition, we've had ongoing problems with the automatic doors malfunctioning; both power doors on the vehicle have failed to close on several occasions. The power door on the driver's side ocassionally requires multiple attempts to close and often the door warning chimes will not go off, even when the door is closed. I am still having suspension problems and would like to have a solution that works. This vehicle is used to transport my diabled husband and the ongoing problems have been extremely frustrating. Rear shocks do not perform correctly. Braun raised the body 2" when making this an entervan. The rear shocks never dampened movement during the first 2" of travel. Wheel hop caused the rear tires to cup and become out of balance. When rotated to the front during normal tire rotation, the van became very difficult to stop and handle. While making a left turn onto another street at approximately 12 mph, the left rear ball joint pulled completely unseated. This caused the wheel to no longer spin and pushed the top against the frame causing damage to the following: upper control arm, upper pivot bushing, and knuckle on the left rear wheel. I did have the ball joint replaced and currently am in need of replacing the bushing and knuckle. All in all, these repairs will have cost me: ball joint replacement and labor approximately 267.00, bushing and knuckle 165.00, and upper control arm 65.00, plus tool rentals. Luckily i was not driving any faster at the time of incident, but still it caused loss of function and steering based on that. There is a recall in canada for this issue but has not been issued in the u.s. I'm seriously considering a lawsuit against gm for this as it is used not only as my working vehicle for my job, but also to transport my family.

The power steering rack failed, making it difficult to control/steer the vehicle at low speeds. I have since heard this referred to as "gm power steering syndrome." it is a common problem of gm cars where the valve in the power steering rack has problems. The power steering fluid cannot get through, particularly at low speeds, making it very difficult to steer. (at higher speeds - when the accelerator is depressed - there is extra pressure forcing the fluid through, so it is a bit easier to steer at higher speeds. The valve failure resulted in failure of the rack, pump, and whole system.

It is probably a shorter list to list what we haven't had trouble with , but here goes. 1. The back power sliding doors will open and shut at will. Driving down the road, parted in the grocery store parking lot, etc. The neighborhood kids regularly come over to tell me my doors are open. My husband almost missed a flight because he spent to much time trying to fight with the door to stay shut. They have replaced almost every part of the doors several times, but was told by the dealership that last time i took it in they didn't know what to do now. 2. Door locks will lock and unlock at will. One day it locked my 1 year old and 3 year old in the van when it was 107. It locked them in from the time it took me to walk from the passenger side to the driver's side. It finally unlocked on its own after not quite 10 min. My children would be dead if it hadn't already been cooled on the inside, but they wouldn't have lasted much longer. The dealership states that they can't duplicate the problem and don't know what to do to correct. 3. Noise in steering column. Rack and pinion replaced, another repair done. The repairs last about 5 - 10k miles. 4. Transmissions slips. They did a reset of something, but transmissions still slips, but the dealership states that the transmission is fine. 5. Fuel gauge. It has always floated, was told that was how gm makes their gauges until i took it the last time to the dealership and now they state that it is a fuel sensor, but it is out of factory warranty and they never even looked at it before as they always told me that it was functioning as designed. *tr

*tr
