How to read a Buick Enclave VIN — every digit explained
Every Buick Enclave carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Buick and the country it was built in.
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Enclave.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Enclave VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

We were involved in a motor vehicle accident on i-79 in pennsylvania where we were struck from the rear we were stopped in traffic the impact was severe it knocked the rear tire completely off. There was smoke coming in the vents of the front of the car and the air bags did not deploy. The front passenger seat belts tighten up so much that it caused bruising on my chest and ribs. My car was totaled out beyond repair. I do not understand why there was smoke coming from the front and the air bags did not deploy. Upon our return home i received an email from diagnostic indicating there was a serious issue with the frontal air bags. I am being told there is no recalls on my vehicle this is concerning to me what if someone else is rear ended and the air bags fail causing death or injury. I believe my vehicle is defective and i don't know what to do.

Motor vehicle accident 12/9/2023 in which I was struck from behind by fast moving vehicle, and forced into vehicle directly in front of my vehicle. No driver airbag deployment, nor did my seatbelt lock, as verified by responding officer.
The passenger side seat air bag exploded and burned my daughter’s back while she was getting into the car. The car was in park and auto started. My son was sitting in the back seat behind her while this happened. She has 1st and 2nd degree burns and thankfully my son is okay. The car has been sitting in my driveway since that day. I have contacted the dealership and GM as well as my personal insurance. GM is moving very slow and stated they would send someone to look at my vehicle within 7-10 days from yesterday . The investigation could take 30-60 days before we have an answer. We are currently on day 11 since this happened. Insurance doesn’t want to touch it until GM or the dealership looks at it and determines if it is a malfunction. The safety of my kids and family is definitely a priority and the fact that this happened is scary. The loudness of the explosion was like a gunshot inside the vehicle and the fire that came out of it is insane. Literally looked like a firework. With the airbag deployed I am sure the seatbelts are now compromised but either way I will not risk my life or anyone else’s and step foot in it. The car was looked at by local law enforcement and pictures were taken. The car is available for inspection but the dealership hasn’t called me back and GM is following their protocol and has no hurry. The airbag light had come on the week prior to this happening and had gone back off. I also had the tire pressure lights go on and back off twice in the past couple of months.
The contact owns a 2018 Buick Enclave. The contact stated that while making a left turn, another vehicle jumped onto a curb and struck the rear end and rear tire of the vehicle. The front driver side, passenger side, and curtain air bags deployed. The contact was concerned about whether the air bags should have deployed for the type of impact experienced. No warning light illuminated. The local dealer was contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. A police report was filed. The contact sought medical attention for bloody stool, lower back pain, and neck pain. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 83,000.
The car was rear ended while parked. The car is totaled. The car moved up several feet upon impact in park and hit the trailer that was parked in front of it. The airbags did not deploy and the screen showed an error message following the accident that said "service airbags". There was no prior notification of this sort previous to the accident. This airbag issue should have been alerted before the accident took place.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 buick enclave. While driving 25 mph and making a left turn, another vehicle pulled out and crashed into the contact's vehicle. The air bags failed to deploy and the driver's side seat belt failed to lock. The contact sustained head injuries that required medical attention. No injuries were reported in the other vehicle. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an auto body repair shop where it was awaiting diagnosis. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 5,000. Updated 05/30/17*lj *cn

Son was driving car and the steering locked. Veared off road after turning onto street, went over curb onto sidewalk and hit light pole and concrete bench, stopping inches from a building. Car was totaled
Tl* the contact owns a 2013 buick enclave. The contact stated that the air bag warning light illuminated intermittently. The contact took the vehicle to alpine buick gmc 8120 w tufts ave, denver, co 80123 to have the light turned off however, the warning light remained illuminated. The contact also stated that one day while reversing from the driveway, the power steering ceased without warning and the vehicle hit a tree. No injuries were reported and there was not a police report filed. The contact had the vehicle repaired under warranty at the same dealer but the failure recurred. Also, the contact stated that the transmission had to be replaced under warranty due to an abnormal noise that was heard emitting from the engine. The contact had the transmission replaced. The manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 29,515.
The power steering pump failed. This failure caused the steering to tighten at slow speeds making the car extremely difficult to control and safety hazard. When taken to the dealer, i was told that power steering pressure inlet hose and power steering gear assembly needed repair. An independent mechanic told me that the additional repairs were the result of the failed pump. Gm is denying coverage of the additional repairs under warranty. The power steering pumps should be recalled with all damaged parts replaced.
Driving off of a highway. Sudden engine seize steering lock and zero power. Car rolled to a complete stop. Luckily we were in a turning lane and were able to roll into a safe waiting area. No one in the vehicle were injured bodily yet the mental anguish and fear was unbearable. Had this happened on the highway five minutes earlier , with the heavy traffic, i am sure there would have been much more serious outcome. The car has since been serviced. Replaced were a broken engine belt., and bad tensioner. What i don't understand is how a 3 year old car could fail so terribly. I am now petrified to drive my enclave for fear of other faulty parts. Service was performed at ferman gmc on november 11, 2013 in lutz florida. This was their first encounter with such a problem. Very scary experience for all involved. Every time i see a buck i recall that night in my mind. I still have not driven the car since it has been repaired and home. Not sure i can ever trust this brand again. I was told a faulty tensioner caused the engine belt to snap. Horrible. *tr
This vehicle has had issues since purchased with brakes and power steering i contacted buick and the dealer where vehicle was purchased and as of 9/8/2014 the brakes were the only ones fixed but power steering still and issue i have contacted buick four times since march and they still have not done anything to help me and fix this problem they are claiming that it is a workmanship issue and not a manufacturer issue based on vehicle history this vehicle is very clean and no accidents but i am starting to doubt that because power steering gets hard at about 15 to 35 miles and also at 45 to 55 when exiting a highway bramp very dangerous vehicle to drive around i would not recommend buick enclaves to anyone because buick or dealers give you the run around when you let them know about issue... *tr
While driving 65 mph on the hwy, in rush hour traffic my entire steering column came completely out and I lost control of my vehicle causing a 3 car wreck. The only indicator that something was wrong was that just prior to this happening the tilt on my steering wheel came undone 2 times and by the 3rd time when I pushed the wheel back up to lock it into place it came out entirely. There was no lights, no nothing. No tampering of any kind had ever been done to it whatsoever. And no one has looked at it since. It still falls randomly while driving. I have a picture taken about 5 minutes before this happened and one taken after the accident I will upload.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 buick enclave. The contact stated that while sitting at a complete stop, smoke emitted into the cabin from under the hood. The engine compartment then became engulfed in flames. The fire department was called to the scene and the vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where it was discovered that the power steering components had failed and allowed fluid to leak onto the manifold. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 72,000.

Complete engine power reduction automatically casing car instantly to drop from 65 mph down to 25 mph in the middle of a 4 lane highway. Lost all power steering ability and not able to turn car and almost drove into trees before it came to a stop. I had to have aaa come and tow my car to walser buick gmc in bloomington, mn
The steering has been an ongoing event since the second year of having the model. I would lose control of the vehicle when turning left. It would have a mind of its own and not turn. I have run off the road and went into several ditches not being able to turn (tech service date 6/20/12 rack and pinion binding causing stiffness in steering--replaced steering gear and flushed system). We almost had a head on collision when i turned it in again with the same issue demanding something be done. (5/10/13 correction-replace leaking steering gear and failed p/s pump, fill system, bleed sys and verify operation). Difficulty steering and loud popping noise while turning left (service date 4/18/14- found internal leak form power steering rack -replaced rack and bleed system and aligned vehicle. Drove out of the the dealership and noticed a/c not working and same noise coming from the front while turning left. Took it back in (5/5/14-found left front axle shaft to be popping needs to replace at owners expense. The dealership had the vehicle for 20+ days and did not fix. Airbag warning light illuminated so i took the vehicle into the dealer (6/29/10--poor connection at sir harness--diagnosed and repaired. Received a recall notice in the mail-took vehicle into the dealer (4/18/14--correction completed). Airbag warning light illuminated again. On the morning of October 25, 2021 at approximately 7:05 am, I was fixing to leave to go to work. The carport light was on, so I open the door to my car, slid into the driver’s seat, started the car up and the lights came on. As I was starting to get out of the car to go turn the carport lights off, I realized the car was going backwards. I tried to get back into the driver’s seat to try to stop the car but I was unable to do so. The door knocked me down on the concrete floor of the carport and the front left tire ran over both my legs. The car continued to go backwards, the door hit the column between the carport bays but continued to travel backwards down our approx. 11-foot paved drive way, crossed the dirt road and stopped when the back of the car went into the deep ditch that runs along the dirt road at that point. When my husband arrived, the car was still running and the lights were on. The man driving the wrecker for the local EMA Director and my husband all looked at the gear shift and the car was in PARK.
After waiting at stop light with foot on the brake (auto stop not engaged) the light turned green. After releasing brake pedal and the car rolling approx 1 foot , then starting to accelerate, within 1-1/2 seconds the transmission went into park abruptly. The shift lever displayed “Park” and “Parking brake” on the DIC illuminated. This almost caused a rear end accident as it was so abrupt. If it would have happened at over 5 MPH the airbags could have gone off causing occupant(s) injury. The resolve was to apply the brake and shift into drive with no issue after that. Will contact dealer tomorrow.
-A few weeks prior to accident, while driving down a 65mph highway in TX, vehicle side mirrors were folding inward. Continued to fold inward after hit button to open them multiple times. What does it mean when my car says service StabiliTrak and service traction control? Its main function is indicating that the traction system has been turned off manually to remind you to turn it back on when necessary. However, the StabiliTrak warning light may also signal potential damage to vehicle components that allow the system to work effectively. Loss of Power to Engine, Can't stear, feels like its about to blow up. It seems very usual for the Enclaves, Traverses and Acadias. And I had the same problem out of my 2014 Traverse LTZ

The timing chain in the engine of this vehicle began to slip at 85,000 miles. This caused the vehicle to drive erratically when the chain slipped. At the same time, the 3rd gear wave plate in the transmission failed causing the car to shift poorly when accelerating. When changing lanes on 9/23/14, the car would not accelerate and to avoid hitting another car i had to steer off the road and i hit a street sign (no damage). *tr

2011 buick enclave, all recalls completed. When turning into driveway from a total stop vehicle experienced unexpected acceleration and crashed through part-way up garage door, side wall of garage, (right wheel over 6" concrete foundation), pushed items stored in garage into front wall and moved wall 12" into laundry room. Vehicle stopped when left front wheel hit concrete step into service door although tire left tread mark on floor until engine turned off. Distance traveled was about 2 1/2 car lengths. Damage to right front mainly. $12,300 dealer estimated damage. Driver suffered soft tissue bruising, chipped tooth, soreness. Air bags did not deploy. Odb showed no dtc codes. Vehicle visually/manually inspected by dealer per insurance company request - nothing found. Claim filed with esis/gm central claims unit. Edr, sdm & cdr data were downloaded using bosch software and pictures taken of vehicle. Data/pictures were turned over to gm investigators. Owner contacted onstar for data but nothing was received by them. However, initial sdm data indicates 'onstar deployment status data sent' and 'sdm recorded vehicle velocity change data sent.' investigation currently 3 months on-going, vehicle untouched. Vehicle also previously exhibited issue of free rolling backward or forward when stopped on an incline. Auto transmission and torque converter would not hold vehicle. *tr
My 2009 Buick Enclave CXL, VIN 5GAEV23D79J118427: Engine caught on fire during the time i was driving it. The car hesitated as if it was going to shut off then i saw smoke coming from underneath the front hood, I pulled to the side of the road and stopped the car and open the front hood, my engine was on fire. The fire was located on the passenger side of the car or the left side of the car if you were facing the front of the car. I tried to put the fire out, but the fire got out of control. I called 911 and the fire Department and Police arrived. My car was being repair due to the fire.

Due to an inability of the Buick auto manufacturers to provide parts to my 2022 Enclave, after becoming disabled to drive in auto accident..since November 27th, enduring a 3 month wait with rental car fees, and emotional stress strickly because unable to obtain parts! The vehicle will randomly loose power or completely shut off while driving it, no matter what speed or what condition. A warning on the dash says that power was reduced, almost like a safety or governor. It randomly does it, the locks will click back and forth between unlock and lock and it will sometimes completely die or just be in limp mode so you have no control. This has happened while going 75 down the interstate with heavy traffic, almost causing a wreck a few times. It will also happen at lower speeds or around turns etc.

The driver was able to exit the vehicle safety. A fire department was contact and arrived to the residence and was able to extinguish the fire. The contact stated the vehicle sustained major damage in the front of the vehicle. The driver contacted 911 but police did not arrive to the residence. The vehicle was not drivable. The insurance adjuster was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired as of yet. A dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer had been informed of failure. The failure mileage was approximate of 77,000.

Onstar keeps running and failed. Nothing works on car without it. Its dead after shutting it off. And no safety features work.
The rear liftgate locking mechanism failed to latch causing cargo to exit the vehicle where the car behind this car smashed into the cargo causing an accident. For whatever reason the rear door will not lock at all. The fuse was perfectly fine, appears the actuator is defective. No warning was given because the rear liftgate was open and unlatched. After realizing the gate would not close it would notify it was open but the power liftgate operates just fine, and when you activate it, it will push the gate closed and not give a warning until maybe you hit a bump in the road.

I had the recall done on my vehicle as part of the 2015/2016 liftgate recall. I have had no problems since. This morning when getting into the back of my car, the liftgate started to close on it's own with no warning (beeping or lights) and hit me on the head. Even though it is supposed to open again when it detects an object in the way, it continued to push close on me. I had to force the liftgate up while it was pushing down. I tried turning the power off and the liftgate won't stay open at all. I tried propping something under it to keep it open, but due to the weight of the liftgate, i cannot keep it open. I effectively can no longer safely use the back of my vehicle for storage, as i am afraid the door will try to close on me every time. I have read that it is an electrical/software issue, as well as an issue with the struts on the door. I had the software upgraded, but the struts were not replaced as part of the original recall. The only electrical issues i've had are that the actuators for my heating & a/c are not switching over. Because of this my defrost and front vents don't work. I live in an area where it is below freezing in the winter. The defrost not working has caused safety issues because the windows will fog up suddenly while i'm driving. I have to pull over often to squeegee the fog off the inside of the windows so i can see while driving. Tried replacing the parts ourselves, and it still doesn't work. I have also had issues with the radio/entertainment system. It randomly changes between band, cd, aux input, satellite radio and usb with no input from me. Although this is more of a nuisance than a safety issue, i fear it points to a larger electrical problem. I have taken my vehicle to a dealership for the actuator and entertainment system problems and was told they can't replicate the issue, so they can't fix it. Does it every time i drive.
Power liftgate is not working. It collapsed on my wifes back after she had opened it to get groceries.

Our buick enclave 2011 had just started down the driveway when it got slightly stuck in a small amount of snow. The car was turned off and my husband went to get a shovel to release the snow by the wheel. When he turned around, black smoke was coming from the car! He immediately called the fire department. It only took a few seconds and flames burst from the car and it made popping noises. The engine of the car and the entire inside, (seats, steering wheel, glove compartment etc.) were completely destroyed. The fireman stated that it was an electrical fire. We purchased the car in october, 2010. We have now found similar fires on the internet but have not seen 2011. We feel this information should be made public and gmc must fix it before someone is seriously injured. My husband would have been driving down a steep hill and if the fire started there he would not have been able to get out! *tr

This 2008 buick enclave vehicle with this vin# has had probably a hundred or more instances over the past year of the back hatch door lifting to about 2/3 of the way up, then suddenly for no reason it closes automatically by itself. The close button was never pushed. The most recent date this happened was below. Persons have had to duck out of the way to avoid being hit, but it actually has hit a person in the head several times. Always happens when car is stationary. It is not showing up as a recall on our vin# on the gm recall site or on your website, however i have seen other websites that discuss this particular model and year as having a recall for this same reason.
Lift gate stops at upper lift position and starts to close with out notice. If your not paying attention to full operation of lift gate can come down stricking a persons head. Seems that automation safey feature would be to stay open !!! Not close unexspectedly??
The front doors of the 2013 buick enclave have razor sharp corners that can cut the calf of your leg as you exit the vehicle. The doors are designed with a sharp corner that jutes out on its lower edge. As a driver, i have been cut twice in the 6 months i have owned the vehicle, one time even through a pair of jeans! Other members of the family have also been cut. All cuts drew blood. *tr
The power back door"hatch" slams shut after opening. Be the power on or off. Sometimes it will stay open other times it slams shut. It doesn't matter even if you are standing there. It has slammed several times on my childrens' heads. I emailed buick but they stated my car was not involved in the recall but this is obviously the same problem the other 2012 buick enclaves were having.
The front driver and passenger doors have a very sharp plastic edge sticking out past the metal body of the door. This has caused injury to three people including myself. The plastic is so sharp that it has cut deep wounds into the legs of the person getting in or out of this vehicle. I have tried to find out if anyone else has had this problem and no one has brought this forward for review. I just can't believe that no one else has had this problem. Maybe they figure they were clumsy and it was their fault. I cut the corners off and sanded them to a smooth finish to correct this problem. *tr
Turned corner on ironwood46615 and rear ended car that stopped suddenly. Crushed my front end back to puncturing the radiator. No air bag deployed and no seat belt on impact. My knees hit the dash under the steering wheel. No onstar as no airbag deployed. Holding steering wheel was my only deterrent to hitting forward. Repairs cost $5000.+ and gm dealer insisted airbag and seat belt were functioning. Knees still hurt. And seen doctor about knees and going again soon. I am reporting this after hearing that there are recalled on seat belts and airbags on driver side. *tr

Tuesday, 7/18/2017. I was coming over a small decline on local road in east brunswick, nj. I applied the brakes and came upon the traffics light and traffics ahead and the vehicle shot foreword. Applying the breaks had no effect. In fact the car appeared to accelerate. I did not have enough time to avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me which caused that vechile to hit another. My vehicle accelerated vs braking when applying the brakes. Applying the brake had no or little effect in slowing the vehicle. Is there, or has there been, reports of similar problems with acceleration problems with the buick enclave, 2015 model ?.
my 2022 buick enclave was involved in a minor accident that was a stop and go traffic . THE car is supposed to have anti collision sensors in the front grill but the car did not stop or slow down and no warning lights went off , also from the hood had a buckled bacl along with the front fenders and pushed both fenders back a little enough to prevent either front door from opening had to exit through the back seat if the car had caught on fire a person would have not survived , all parts in accident where replaced by the body shop and buick dealer had to recalibrate the collision equipment thanks for any help jeff quicksell
Cold start, ac unit on, engine at high idle speed. Put car in reverse to back out of the garage. Stepped on the brake pedal and the car kept rolling. Pumped the brake peddle and applied extreme pressure, car did not slow down. Panicked that i would hit a wall, i dropped the car from reverse to drive. Still on high idle, the car would not stop even with extreme pressure applied to the brake pedal. Car continued forward and hit a cabinet in my garage causing considerable front-end damage. Every thing happened so quickly, i couldn't understand what happened at the time. The only thing i could think of was that i must have done something wrong. Restarted the car and all functions were fine. The damage did not affect the operation of the vehicle. I drove to the dealer and i'm waiting for an estimate to repair the damage.
The brake issue raised its ugly head again. The vehicle has operated fine since the original incident even with the front-end damage. Yesterday, one week after the original incident it occurred again. Cold start leaving a restaurant turned out of parking lot on to side street. Traffic was stopped at a light and i pulled into the left turn lane. Going very slow, haven't even traveled 200 feet. Put pressure on brake pedal to stop and no response, the car keeps rolling forward as i applied extreme brake pressure. At that point i hit the emergency parking brake button and the car stopped just as i hit the rear end of the car in front of me. Thankfully there was no damage to his car. I restarted the car and we pulled off the road into a parking lot to exchange information. Everything operated fine. Left the scene and headed home. When the light changed, i turned left from the side street into traffic. Heavy traffic, slow go. About 1 mile later the traffic slowed down to stop. Once again, the brakes were not responding. I was able to hit the emergency brake and ditch to the side of the road. After traffic passed, i restarted and moved about thirty feet into the safety of a parking lot. At that point i called aaa and had the car towed home. I will have it towed into the dealer this morning.
2015 Buick Enclave put in Park, doors unlocked, got out and the vehicle moved while in park.
On thursday, 7/26/2018, i had parked my car in a restaurant parking lot. I appear to have pulled the vehicle up onto a concrete space divider. When i tried leaving the restaurant, i couldn't back off of the space divider, the car wouldn't move backward, so i tried pulling foreword. When the car came free from the divider, it shot foreword. Applying the breaks had no effect. In fact the car appeared to accelerate. I was headed directly toward a concrete building, so to avoid hitting the building head on, i had just enough time to turn the steering wheel slightly causing the vehicle to side swipe the building but it crashed into two parked vehicles. It caused extensive damage to my vehicle and one of the parked vehicles and only slight damage to the third. It appeared that the vehicle accelerated beyond the effort i applied to the gas pedal, it ran away and the application of the brakes had no or little effect in slowing the vehicle. Is there, or has there been, reports of similar problems with acceleration problems with the buick enclave, 2015 model ?
Tl* the contact owned a 2012 buick enclave. While driving approximately 5-10 mph, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to stop the vehicle. The contact attempted to shift the vehicle into reverse and park; however, the vehicle kept rolling forward and crashed into another vehicle. There were no injuries and a police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to ballas buick gmc (located at 5715 central ave, toledo, oh 43615, (419) 464-7699) to be diagnosed, which was still pending. The vehicle was salvaged. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000. *tp *pm
*tr
Tl*the contact owns a 2009 buick enclaved equipped with a blue ox braking system. After towing the vehicle with the braking system, the contact noticed smoke from under the vehicle. The contact noticed that the brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard and the brakes would not engage. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the braking system. The defective system was sent back to the manufacturer who could not diagnose the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000 and the current mileage was approximately 28,000. Snowy conditions - about 2 inches on the ground; as i began to descend the hill near my home i tried to apply the brakes to keep a slow pace down the hill. Brakes failed and i began to slide down the hill. Steering was unresponsive; messages interchangeably flashed on the dashboard - 'service stabilitrak' and 'service traction control'. I had no control over the vehicle, and halfway down the hill jumped an 8" curb. Fortunate that the vehicle swerved to the right because there were parked cars to the left. Also, fortunate there were no people/children around, who could have been hit. $3000 damage to the underside of the vehicle. Very frightening to lose complete control of the car - i thought awd, abs, traction control and stabilitrak are supposed to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle in adverse conditions. Everything failed at once. Got the vehicle to the closest gm dealership; they ran diagnostics and surprise, everything checks out. They have no indication anything failed, so nothing further they can do except repair the physical damage. I experienced a complete failure of brakes, steering, traction, and electronic stability control and the dealership is telling me i did not - that the conditions were slick and that's what caused the accident. Isn't that when all of those safety features are supposed to engage? This is the first time i experienced a malfunction like this in this vehicle. Now i'm afraid to drive the vehicle, once it's fixed, esp. With other passengers. I may not even keep it. *tr

I was in the passing lane on a four lane interstate highway driving over an overpass near rockport, mo. My speed/cruise control was set on 70 mph.there were one or more cars ahead of me in the passing lane and i was passing a semi-truck in the right lane. My vehicle started to speed up, without any input from me. I tried multiple times unsuccessfully to brake and could not slow the vehicle down. I changed lanes in order to not hit the car in front of me which we were almost upon. In doing so, the semi-truck clipped the corner of the vehicle. I was spun on to the shoulder and then rolled several times down the 65 foot embankment. The vehicle was totaled. The passenger sustained bruising and loss of consciousness. He had to be extricated from the vehicle and was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital and then subsequently airlifted to another hospital. I sustained a compound fracture in my clavicle, 5 broken ribs and a cracked pelvis. I was hospitalized for three days.

I bought a 2020 buick enclave, (owned by gmc) with 6 miles on it, 1 week ago. Yesterday the check engine light came on and the car started jerking anytime the transmission switched gears. I called to try to get it in to a certified buick dealership to be looked at and nowhere can get it in for 3-5 days and none of the dealerships will give a loaner car until the time of the vehicle appointment. I contacted buick directly regarding this and they told me the same thing, that we can't get a safe driving vehicle, until the one we have can be looked at by a dealership and if we take it to an un-certified shop that it would not be covered. So now i am stuck with either driving an unsafe car 50 miles on the highway to work for the next few days or not being able to go to work. This is a brand new car driven straight out of the floor room! Buick is putting people's life at risk by insisting that we drive this unsafe vehicle on the highway until we can get it looked at! Looks like a huge lawsuit in the making!!!!! *tr

The contact owns a 2019 Buick Enclave. The contact stated while driving downhill, he shifted to a lower gear and was depressing on the brake pedal however, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated. The contact also stated that the RPM was very high. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact stated he continued driving but had to stop 5 times to allow the vehicle to cool down. The contact took the vehicle to the local dealer. The mechanic found no failure with the vehicle. The contact stated that the failure persisted. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000. Contact was on top of Pikes Peak in Colorado. The fast idle has the engine revved to high so that when foot was off the brake on a 5-8% slope the car accelerates to 6500RPM with in 250 feet taking the car to 30MPH in low gear. Consumer had to push on the brakes constantly, all the way down the mountain which caused the brakes to severely overheat. Park ranger measured the temperature of the brakes at 375 degrees F it was after consumer had stopped to allow them to cool 3 times in about 4 miles. The car will idle at 950RPM stopped and will lurch forward when foot was off the brake. Driving on the highway speeds its fine but not on switchback mountain roads.
I am a [XXX] and owner of a 2018 Buick Enclave that suffered a catastrophic transmission failure which nearly killed me and my child. On Friday, [XXX], while driving westbound on [XXX] from Edison, NJ to my home in Easton, PA, my vehicle suddenly and without warning came to a complete halt in the fast lane. A driver tailgating me swerved at the last second to avoid impact. Moments later, when I tried to move again, the car lost all power and drifted helplessly across two lanes of speeding traffic, directly into the path of two tractor-trailers barreling down at highway speeds. This was the hottest day of the summer, and I was left in terror, fully aware that one wrong move would have ended our lives instantly. The fact that my child could have lost their only parent because of a mechanical defect is beyond unacceptable. The stress, fear, and trauma of this incident cannot be overstated—it was a near-fatal event that never should have happened. My mechanic has since confirmed the transmission is destroyed, with black metal fragments throughout—clear evidence of internal failure. Only two months earlier, in June 2024, the car passed inspection with no codes or signs of a problem. This was not wear and tear; it was a hidden, catastrophic defect. In December 2024, GM recalled more than 461,000 vehicles, including certain 2018 Enclave models, for transmission defects leading to rollaway and internal failure. Source: The Lemon Firm, 12/18/24 [XXX] ). My case mirrors the defect exactly, yet I never received recall notice. I demand GM confirm my VIN’s inclusion and cover the full cost of repair or replacement. I barely escaped a fatal crash. GM must act immediately before lives are lost. I took my Buick enclave into the gmc dealership two years ago for an service airbag light that kept coming on. They sent me home twice saying it was just a computer issue. Now this recall is out and I asked for my car to be serviced as I’m a mother of 4 and can’t stop driving my vehicle. They said that the part isnt out yet and nothing they can do. I’m having to drive a dangerous vehicle around with no help from gmc.

Can a Buick Enclave tow? Towing & payload
As an SUV, the Buick Enclave is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package, on a curb weight near 4,733 lb.
What sets your Enclave's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
How much does a Buick Enclave cost to own?
