How to read a Coachmen Freelander VIN — every digit explained
Every Coachmen Freelander carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Coachmen and the country it was built in (real Coachmen codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Freelander.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- —1MW · 1TC · 1TE · 1TJ · 1TX
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Freelander, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

Engine And Engine Cooling
What's wrong. On motor homes built on ford e-series chassis, the air filter element material process resulted in an air filter paper element that can smolder or burn. This change in filter paper composition combined with the configuration of the air induction system, may allow hot carbon particles to contact the air filter element during certain driving conditions that create hot particles.
Risk. These hot particles may ignite the air filter element with the potential for air induction system damage or underhood fire.
Fix. Ford is conducting the owner notification and remedy for this campaign. Dealers will inspect and replace the air filter element. Owners should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673 or coachmen at 219-825-5821.

Tl* the contact owns a 2017 coachmen freelander equipped with a kidde fire extinguisher. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 17v756000 (equipment); however, the parts to do the repair were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer stated that they would send the contact a replacement fire extinguisher and provided reference number: [xxx]. The contact stated that three months passed and he still had not received the replacement fire extinguisher. The contact had not experienced a failure. The vin was not available. The serial number was unknown. *tt information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tt
My 2011 coachmen freelander had a failure of the main door latch/lock mechanism manufactured by trimark corporation model #060-0650. The failure resulted in us being locked out of the motorhome in the dark of night in a remote area of the sierra's ca. After jimmying a window open and gaining access into the motorhome, i proceeded to take the inside latch plate off. After removing the plate, i found the problem, 'a broken plunger'; it was the thin metal in the plunger that had broken. When i arrived back into town i did some internet research and found that this is a well-known problem? So, i contacted trimark and they said the replacement # 37575-01-k has a steel plunger for $200 vs the diecast zinc alloy for around $100. I checked the market, and no one has a steel version other than directly from trimark; let's make it cheap so it breaks, then manufacture a better one but only sell direct and charge twice as much. When i asked if there was a recall she said i don't know contact the seller of the rv? When i said it seems like this is a known issue can you work with me, she said nothing. I can really see this being a life and death situation in many different circumstances for humans and their pets.
The television is mounted above the lounge chair just behind the passenger seat. While driving home the tv cabinet fell apart and caused the tv which is about 30lbs to come crashing down just missing my wife's head by a inch. *jb
Tires 3 Read
I wanted to register my tires in case of a recall but the vehicle dealer didn't know anything about tire registration when i bought the vehicle new.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 coachman freelander. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, the front drivers tire went flat without warning. The tire was replaced with a new tire. The contact received the recall notification related to nhtsa campaign id number 13t012000 (tire). The manufacturer was notified of the defect and stated the contact would not be reimbursed for replacement of the tire. The approximate failure mileage was 10,000.
Had a second tire blowout of bfg 225/75r16 tires on our coachmen freelander. Driving around 45 mpg on smooth road with temp approximately 65 degrees. Tire tread peeled off the entire thing except for an approximately 10 inch strip. It destroyed the gas intake line. Good thing we didn't have alot of gas in the tank. A few months ago had the same thing happen with another bfg tire (we bought 3 of them). That one crushed the exhaust pipe. At the time we didn't attribute it to a defective tire but after 2 out of 3 blowouts we will have the 3rd one taken off as soon as we can get the gas intake replaced & can get to a tire dealer. We called bfg & they're looking into it...they want us to send them the tire!!! Our insurance company said don't send it. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2008 coachman freelander 3150 ss-f rv. While the vehicle was parked he noticed that the hideaway bed blocked the exit door when it was open. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the manufacturer would need to authorized the repair or replacement of the hideaway bed. The manufacturer refused to replace or repair the bed and stated that it was how the vehicle was manufactured. The failure mileage was 2,500 and the current mileage was 6,000.
Fuel System 2 Read
The high pressure propane gas line from the propane tank to the stove has cracked. I just discovered this yesterday nov 1, 2011 while looking for the reason the gas to the stove was shutting down while the slide was retracted. What i found was the gas line pinched at a 180 degree angle, folded back on itself. When the slide-out is extended the gas line straightens enough to allow gas to flow. When the slide-out is drawn back in to move the motorhome, the gas line is folded and pinched closed. I inspected the gas line at the fold/pinch point and discovered a crack on the outside of the high pressure rubber tubing. The slide-out has been moved, in and out, approximately 100 times since purchasing new in september 2002. The smallest hole in this line would produce a major leak resulting in possible explosion with severe bodily burns or death. I contacted ron roff in customer support at the forrest river factory and he seemed less than concerned, telling me not to worry, the gas alarm would sound if a leak should develop at the cracked area. And his position, acting in behalf of the company, is to send me a new hose, case closed. This repair/replacement needs special tools, qualified understanding of connecting gas lines and how the gas line should be placed beneath the slide-out floor so this problem will not happen again. Also, the slide-out has to be lifted to make the connections under the floor of the slide-out. I'm sure there are many other similar situations with freeland slide-out models. I sure hope these defects are corrected before someone is blown up and dies. I turned my gas tank off and am taking it to a rv dealer. I wish i could make the repairs myself but it is beyond my capability. Thank you updated 11/10/11 *bf *tr updated ivoq 03/12/12 updated ivoq 06/05/12
Suspension 1 Read
While the motorhome is traveling down the road, hitting any dips or bumps in the road at any speed, one of the supports for the coach frame hits the helper springs in the rear of the coach. Also, at the front end of the spring, the head of the shackle bolt rubs against one of the welded brackets. Coachmen RV installed helper springs that are manufactured by Super Springs Inc on the rear suspension of the Ford E450 Class C motorhomes. It is part of their “CRV Comfort Ride” package. The added helper springs are making contact with one of the frame supports for the coach on both the driver and passenger side. This is due to not having enough clearance for suspension travel. Forest River/Coachmen has been contacted about the issue.

June 6 2023 -- While making a tight turn the POWER STEERING LINE "POPPED" with no warning creating a loss of steering and braking capabilities and placing us in danger. There is a Ford recall (22S08) for several vehicles of this same make/model but our vehicle was not included and we don't know why. It has taken a Ford shop nearly 4 months to repair. According to the Ford shop only the hoses were replaced and not the actual pump. This was a very dangerous situation and we should have been notified of this known defect.
