How to read a Coachmen Nova VIN — every digit explained
Every Coachmen Nova carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Coachmen and the country it was built in (real Coachmen codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Nova.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- —1MW · 1TC · 1TE · 1TJ · 1TX
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Nova, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

We purchased a new 2025 Coachmen Nova class B camper van on August 28th, 2025 from Olathe Ford RV Center in Kansas. On the drive home from the dealership, the van suffered a complete mechanical failure, shutting down while traveling 70 miles per hour at night on a busy highway. The engine, steering, brakes, lights and emergency blinkers failed, causing the vehicle to lose all control and stop suddenly. We were almost hit by passing semi trucks and cars, who couldn't see us in the dark. I managed to start the engine once, accelerating before it shut down again, and coasting into a parking lot. The vehicle would not start again. The dashboard and lights would only flicker and click (even while the vehicle was totally off). We called the roadside emergency assistance that was sold with the vehicle, only to learn that we had been lied to and that Coachmen Forest River is not covered. We had to cover all expenses. The vehicle was towed to Burt Ogden Dodge Ram service center in Harlingen, Texas. They attempted to repair it 3 times before finally telling me it could not be repaired and it was the upfitter's fault. The service case was closed and we were told the vehicle was sent to Forest River (RV upfitter). Nobody has contacted us about it and we do not know the status of the vehicle. It has now been 7 months since we purchased this new RV. We don't know where it is, the repair status, what happened, or what to do next.
I parked my 2022 Coachman Nova 20C at the Scenic Overlook on [XXX] at approx 11:15 AM. As I opened the right side sliding door, the CAREFREE, Freedom RM, awning spontaneously extended. The Firefly touchpad next to the door was unresponsive to retracting touch command. Once extended, no attempt to retract the awning myself was effective. No warning of the status of the awning was given. A warning is only given when keys are in the ignition which was not the case. The wind at the overlook caught the awning tossing it up over the vehicle, causing bolts to pop loose. To prevent the awning from flying into passing traffic or scenic spectators in the parking lot, I used a kitchen knife to cut long slits in the fabric to relieve leverage affect of the wind on the awning. Truly, a local mechanic arrived with his truck and ratchet straps. We managed to cut away the fabric from the aluminum frame, pull the structure closed and secured it with ratchet straps. Once secured, I removed the awning fuse. This occurred on Memorial Day when dealership offices and usual means of assistance were not available.
