- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).

I was driving down the road when my window on my ford f150 lariat came crashing down two weeks ago( my child was sitting next to the window she is 6 mths old) & it distracted me long enough to look back @ the road & there was a car stopped to make a sudden turn & i couldn't slow down fast enough & i hit them in the rear. All 4 of us went to hospital with minor injuries. It was my fault the cop said but i told him about the window & he didn't give me a ticket thankfully. Its still @ the body shop being fixed the problem was the window regulator & it is being replaced but the body shop manager says these go out way to much this is the 3rd one replaced on this truck, so i looked online & couldn't believe how many people have this problem i think you should research this & put a recall on them & make ford fix them for free this is definitely caused from ford trying to cut corners & save $ but this is a serious problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *tr
I was in the neighborhood, 3 houses away, when an oncoming car came. I swerved my passenger side mirror then struck a mailbox. The passenger window was down. In the process, on impact, the glass from the mirror exploded. When the mirror exploded, only then, the shattered glass flew into the window cutting a vane in my right arm. I bleed profusely for 20 min. I managed to slow down the bleeding but eventually went to medical center then to the hospital. Glass flew into and fragments of glass penetrated the seats in the vehicle and clothing on the body. *tr
Driving down my street the window just crashed down! It fell so fast and hard that i had to look to my right side to see what hit me! At that point i rear ended a car that slowed down! All this is do to a cheap plastic clip that failed and released the window. *tr
This is unbelievable that ford can get away with these junk regulators on my 2004 ford f150 supercrew !!!!! My daughter was looking out over the rear window holding on to it, and laughing at me while i was washing the truck when the [xxx] thing just broke causing her to fall and hit her face off the door panel !!! Then i go online and find 1000's of complaints that ford won't do anything about, so now i have to repair this at my own expense. Ford needs to replace these before someone else gets hurt !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)*tr
2004 ford f-150 crew cab lariat. Driving in rainstorm, the power window regulator fails and the window comes crashing down. This is the 3rd of 4 windows that has fell down for no reason in a 18 mo. Period. The shock and surprise has caused me to lose control and run into a fence. Had this been on a freeway it could be worse. *tr
Driver side window motor with regulator. *tr
Ford f150 20004 power window regulator p/n 4l3z1823201ca ford charges about $500 for this item. This is second one in 14 months. *tr
While driving my 2004 ford f-150 crewcab pickup truck one day, i heard a 'pop' (like a rock hit my window) on the driver side window, and the next day i hear it again. The next night my driver side window fell into my door while out driving and scared me so bad it made me swerve off the road. A police officer saw this and accused me of being intoxicated so i therefore had to go through a field sobriety and breathalizer test. The police officer apologized but it was very nerve racking to go through that. That night i took my door apart to find a jungle of wires in my door that once connected to the tracks that held my window in place. It is not repairable, but replaceable so therefore i am very upset. I have been working on cars since i was fourteen year old, and never have i seen such a horrible idea for a window motor. This should be recalled immediately and should be treated as a serious safety issue. I am very thankful that i commuted on back country roads this night because if i were to be on the interstate or a highway, there is no doubt in my mind that i would have wrecked and been seriously hurt or even killed. The noise was so loud and quick it is impossible to prepare for it and after reviewing the design of these window motors, regulators, and elevator cables, it seems as if failure is inevitable and is only a matter of time before they break. I just hope the other three windows don't give out before they recall them. *tr
I was driving and went to roll down my driver side window on the way home from work and the whole window just dropped into my door never to be seen again. To my luck, it began to rain.....badly. As if getting wet wasn't enough, every time a vehicle would pass me going the other direction at an intersection i would get splashed with nasty road water in my face!!! It sprayed me so bad once when a vehicle passed me that i hit the curb and could have easily had a horrible accident or worse, killed someone on a curb!!! This cost me over $300 to have the whole motor assembly replaced in the door and sounds like it is all too common due to a poorly designed plastic tab that breaks. What will it take for a recall on this? Some poor persons' child getting hit at a bus stop during a rain storm? Can't wait for it to happen again. *tr

The contact owns a 2004 Ford F-150. The contact stated while starting his parked vehicle, he found that the vehicle would not start. The contact self-diagnosed and bypassed the starter solenoid using a screwdriver and started the vehicle. The vehicle slipped out of the park and rolled backward. The contact was backed over by the vehicle and had received injuries to his ribs and stomach. He had lacerations and abrasions to his back and chest. The contact was able to get out from under the vehicle and attempted to stop the vehicle which was rolling. The contact jumped into the passenger side and attempted to brake but could not. The contact attempted to push the shift lever into "park" but the gear would not engage. The vehicle rolled and crashed into the rear end of a parked vehicle. The contact's vehicle had damage to the rear bumper and the rear end of the other vehicle had the bumper and trunk crumpled. The police were not called and the contact did not seek medical attention. The contact was able to start the vehicle and drove it to his residence. The contact then examined the undercarriage and determined that the transmission linkage cable had been resting on the doughnut of the exhaust system. The contact stated that the outer cable shell had melted and the metal cable was exposed. The contact diagnosed that the exposed cable had contributed to the vehicle slipping out of gear. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 260,000.
Truck died, lost all power while driving down the road. This has happened 5 - 6 times through the years starting around 2010. Sometimes driving down freeway sometimes driving slowly into driveway. Battery was checked, it was okay and connected fine. Various other engine problems later include a rattle noise and low rpm. Running hot, chugging along like running out of gas, etc. Having to pull over till it could go again. Currently just a little over 100,000 miles.
With my foot on the brake, i put the truck in reverse to begin backing out of a driveway. I applied a little gas to slowly backup around the turn in the drive. As i was rolling backwards, i had my foot on the brake because i was navigating past other parked vehicles. As i was clearing one of the vehicles, the truck suddenly jolted backwards hitting a tree. So then, with my foot on the brake, i put the truck in drive so that i could pull forward away from the tree. As i began to press on the gas pedal and the truck instantly thrust forward, hitting another tree, stopping the truck & knocking the tree over. It happened with such power that the wheels spun down into the mulch bed before i was able to brake, put the truck into park and remove the keys to turn it off. While the damage on the back bumper was minimal, the damage to the front of the truck was extensive & the insurance company declared the truck a total loss. There was one other time, while on the local highway at a stoplight, with my foot on the brake, that the truck began to thrust forward on its' own. After it first rocked forward, i pressed the brake all the way to the floor which prevented it from actually moving forward any more. Once the light turned green, the truck seemed to return to normal functioning. This incident occurred around the time i was due for a tune-up so i figured it was a fluke and would have been resolved with the tune up.
The engine blew a spark plug out my grandfather bought this truck new it never had them removed before it did not come lose it blew threads and all out do your god dam job make ford fix this before someone gets killed from a fire over this when the plug pops out it blows fuel out on the coil pack with it with it shooting lighting bolts if i had been a person with no mechanical knowledge it would have got bad i popped the hood and flames were popping out around the coil pack that is beating the crap out of the fuel rail if i had drove the truck or had been on the freeway that fuel rail would have been busted then a fire ball i can send u picks or make a video of the coil pack smacking the fuel rail. *tr
Tl*- while driving on the highway at 65 mph the right rear axle on the 2004 ford f-150 cracked. There was no indication, any type of vibration, or warning before the incident. The hub stayed attached to the wheel at the time of the incident. The right rear axle cracked which caused the vehicle to have no steering. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a median. The contact had the vehicle serviced every 3,000 miles, as well as recently getting 4 new tires. The contact could provide any invoice and and an accident report. *ak
My 2004 ford f150 was parked in my driveway in park with the engine running and ac on max. I left it running while i unloaded the back seat of several items. I then closed the doors and proceeded to unload 4 cases of water from the bed of the truck. I made 5 trips from the truck to the house and when i returned and put the tailgate back up my truck took off towards my house and impacted the brick wall of the gararge (approx 20 to 25 foot distance). I tried to run from the back and open the door and apply the brake but the truck hit the house as i got the door open. The shifter was still in park. I applyed the brake and put it in reverse and moved it back to reveal the damage. My wife and i tested this afterwards to attempt to duplicate this without being able to reproduce it. My house and the truck are damaged and i feel that this has the potential to really hurt someone. After being told of this site by my insurance company i see that this has happened to other people and one has almost an identical story. See complaint 10081205. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership and have not been given any information yet.
I was driving my new ford f150 ,3 weeks old, up the highway 70 mph with cruise control on. Suddenly the air bag depolyed, buring my right ear lobb. I then pulled over to the side of the highway ,with out any incedent, when i got out i noticed that the driveshaft fell out of the transmission. The transmission was shattered like an egg shell. The mechanics at the dealership pointed out that one c-clip was either never put in the front u-joint. They did not know why the ait bag should have gone off.they then tried to tell my my insurence should fix it. There is no body damage not even a piece of dirt missing. Then they said they would fix it. Wwhen i went up to sign work release the said they want to send the truck back to the factory. But theynever did this. I then told them i do not want it back they can just keep it. Under the lemon law. It was alrready in the shop for over 30 days. They had there legal dept. Call me and tell that it is not a lemon and i must keep this truck. I did not argue. But then out of the blue they agian saying i could come up there and pick out 1 of 2 2005 f150 that were more expensive and did not have options mine had. I would have to pay the cash difference up front to pick 1 up. I did not have that kind of cash so i stuck to my word that i dont want a nother ford truck.after this time no one else would discuss the matter with me they just hang up. Now they sent a letter to say they selling my truck to pay for legal fees and repiars. Please help me to deciced what action i shouldi take . Ps i did not go to the hospital so layer do not want to help. *ak

I purchased a new 2004 ford f-150 supercrew. The rear differential made a "whining" sound between 45-50 miles per hour from the day i purchased the truck. My truck now has 7000 miles on it and the whine has become extremely noisy and now makes the whine from 45 mph to 70mph and above. My ford dealer will not make any repairs on the truck becasue they are told that ford motor company is "investigating the problem" . Ford motor company has been investigating this "problem" since 07-04. It is not 01-05 with no progress to this problem and it has become so severe that i get headaches just from commuting every day listening to the constant "whine" sound. There needs to be a recall or something to make ford fix his problem as i can't even sell my truck as no one would even consider owning it.*ak

I have a 2004 f-150 that has spit two spark plugs out with in a year. The second one caught fire . There has been this issue with many owners of ford trucks and is a on going issue ford won't take care of. Napa auto parts has a repair kit made just for this issue with ford engines. The cost is $ 73.00 plus having someone do the repair. *tr
2004 f150 4.6ltr engine. Spark plug blow out #3 cylinder 64865 miles. Original factory parts. Spoke directly to ford motors they act as if this is my fault. The parts have never been changed. Ford told me it is not covered under warrenty because this is a maintanence part. The dealer told me that this has been a big problem for ford. But they wont honor to fix the problem even though it is a mechanical failure due to bad design. It cost 600.00 to fix and i beleive this should be covered by ford due to the number of instences. There were two trucks fixed the same day for the same problem and again the service department said this has been a big issue. I would like this to be resolved. The consumer should not have to worrie about a spark plug blowing out while driving. This is a saftey issue because fuel keeps flowing into the cylinder and when ignights flames fly out through the spark plug hole. Quit acting like th is is not a problem and recall these poor desinged parts before someone does get hurt. *tr

Went to have spark plugs changed at 100,000 miles in accordance with manufacturer's factory maintenance schedule. Spark plugs are stuck due to factory not seating plugs correctly and not using anti-seize compound during factory installation. It requires a $10,000 machine to negatively polarize the engine so that the plug threads can be decarbonized and hopefully removed. This is an unacceptable factory defect and ford needs to address the issue immediately and re-imbursed the unreasonable costs and burden placed on the consumer. No where in the literature provided by ford was this issue discussed had it been openly discussed or presented in the literature i would not have purchased the vehicle. This is fraud. *tr
On june 11th 2007, i drove my 2004 ford f150 pickup truck 12 miles to drop my dad off at his house. I came straight home. I parked the truck in front of my home at 5:00pm that evening. It stayed parked for the night. At 3:20 am on june 12, 2007 my 2004 ford f150 full size pickup truck burst into flames. It burned so hot that the firemen had a hard time putting it out. The police checked a camera that points down my street and it did not show anybody doing anything to the truck. It just spontaneous combustion. There were no modifications made to the truck, and all maintenance was performed in a timely fashion. I also have pictures of the truck if needed. *tr

I was in a bank drive-up driving my daughter''s 2004 ford 150 truck. When i started to leave the truck lurched and the engine went to full speed. I immediately applied the brakes but they did nothing to slow the truck. I was headed straight for the bank where the tellers were, so i turned sharply to the right. The truck kept going at a high rate of speed with me trying to stop it with the brakes. It shot through the parking lot and across a very busy road where a car hit me. The impact of the other car didn''t even phase the truck. It kept going, over the curb across the street, through a burger king parking lot and rammed into metal stairs on the side of a jewelry store where it finally stopped. I hit the staircase at a tremendous rate of speed yet the airbags didn''t deploy. The car that hit me was totaled and the driver went to the hospital. My daughter''s truck was totaled and i had to go to the hospital with injuries that turned out to be bruises all over my body, especially on my legs. The staircase was destroyed and a car nearby had damage. The insurance was not adequate to cover all the damage. The insurance company sent someone out to do an engineering report on the truck but he could not find the cause. That didn''t surprise me as there was little left to inspect. This was definitely a mechanical failure. I did not have my foot on the gas peddle. I was trying to stop the truck with the brakes and steering to avoid people and other obstacles. Ford needs to look into this as it is an extremely dangerous flaw or defect. I am going to be responsible for a lot of money to repair the damage that the insurance didn''t pay.
Dt: the contact's wife was driving the vehicle and the brakes were not working properly. While traveling down hill there where no brakes. This, in turn, caused the contact's vehicle to rear end another vehicle. This accident involved four other vehicles which sustained damages. This crash was a frontal impact .upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. There were no warning lights prior to the accident. The vehicle was towed to a body shop for inspection .the vehicle was under warranty.
Tl* the contact owned a 2004 ford f-150. After the gear shift was switched into the drive position with the brake pedal engaged, the vehicle accelerated independently. As a result, the contact crashed into a ditch and the vehicle rolled over multiple times. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact sustained a broken hand and arm, a severed finger, and bruising on the body that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.
I was pulling a trailer over the continental divide with my family and stopped to get gas in leadville, colorado. As i was pumping gas i saw smoke coming from under my truck bed. I looked under the truck and saw flames near my spare tire. I stopped pumping gas and ran to get a fire extinguisher. After the fire was out i observed that my tail-pipe had broken away from my muffler. The heat from my exhaust had melted the rubber coating on my rear right brake cable. The heat had also melted some plastic near my spare tire. The mechanic in leadville who welded my tail pipe back to the muffler told me the melted plastic came from an evaporative fuel emissions system mounted near my spare tire. (bad place to put it if you ask me) my truck bed-liner also started to melt from the heat. I called ford to notify them of the safety problem and they only recommended that i take it to a ford dealer and have it looked at. I doubt i will ever hear from them again. I'm not going to pay out of my pocket to have this problem officially diagnosed. I guess i'm just lucky to be alive and that the whole gas station didn't blow up.
I drove the truck home from the automatic car wash (with underflush) and i parked it in my garage. I left for a 10 day vacation an hour after i parked it. When i came home 10 days later i found the truck hood and cab covered in black soot. The entire garage also had a thin film of black soot. As it turns out, the antilock brake control module caught on fire some time after i parked the truck. It caused $4000 damage between the brake control module and other related components. I have a full extended warranty which covered the repairs (initially the dealership told me the warranty would not cover the repair, but i challenged that decision, and the esp people agreed with me). *tr
Dt: the brakes failed on 8-21-05. The consumer was driving when the brakes went out, resulting in a collision. The consumer noticed that the clamp on the breather was rubbing the brake line. The consumer stated there were no previous problems with the vehicle. The consumer was in the process of having the repairs done. *ak
While applying the brake pedal vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. However, mechanic could not duplicate the problem. *ak
While consumer was driving 30-35 mph, another vehicle cut in front of consumer vehicle, consumer slammed on brakes and vehicle continued on , hitting the other vehicle on driver's front side. Upon impact, neither frontal air bag deployed, and the abs failed to stop the vehicle. Dealer and the manufacturer were not notified.*ak
Consumer was pulling inside of the garage and vehicle suddenly accelerated. Consumer applied the brakes and pedal went to the floor. Then, vehicle crashed into the garage door. Upon impact, both frontal air bag did not deploy. No injuries were reported. Vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic could not determine the cause of the collision. *ak.....the brakes did not stop vehicle, nd the air bags did not deploy. There were two children, 5 and 7 years in the back seat who could have been seriously hurt. If the vehicle had moved 3 inches to the right consumer would have gone through the garage door, where consumer's husband was working and could have been run over and seriously hurt. This happened again on christmas eve when the vehicle was parked on a city street in midway, ky. It was in park when consumer turned on the ignition and the accelerator went wide open. Consumer put foot on the brakes and after a few seconds the accelerator went down to normal. *ak
While applying the brakes coming to a red light at an intersection, all power was lost and driver unable to stop vehicle and crashed into a dump truck. No airbags were deployed, all power was lost. Dealer checked vehicle and said that they could not find anything wrong with the vehicle. Very disturbing failure because the dealer could not find anything wrong with the vehicle to fix and that this could happen again at any time.*ak
Suspension 118 Read
My accident in a parking deck is on security recording at the beau rivage casino in biloxi, ms i think. Ford cannot explain why a wheel broke off at 8 mph. I caught an 18" h x 6" w x 24' l steel traffic control device with the outside edge of my front driver's side tire. I don't know how fast i was going but the tape does. I think it less than 10 mph. I am pretty sure i was braking when it happened. I was on a down ramp and there were other cars. I was taking care, but looking at another car pulling in next to me when the accident occurred. It's on tape. Anyway, my front wheel snapped off. Ford has a non explanation. They agree this is not supposed to happen under the conditions it did, and since it may have been taped...the beau won't give it up to me but maybe you....have given an alternative explanation that makes no sense. According to ford, both astro ford in d'iberville, ms and the mysterious adjuster (apparently he is not compuncted to state his findings, just judgment) who seemingly concurs with astro, there is a part missing that had to have been left out in one of two maintenance (brake and align) jobs, the most recent of which was more than 20000 miles ago. When asked if i could operate the truck with the part missing, they call it a key, the answer was a definitive and unanimous no. Would the tire wear funny? They say yes, and agree it is not. There is nothing, when you look closely at this truck, that would indicate any form of hard living. The spare tire is unused. The reason why i know 20000 since anything is because that's when the tire was mounted on the wheel that failed and other than washing it, that's the last attention that wheel had. I have that record. Neither the brakes or alignment were done since. *tr

There are large holes in the frame, and the shackles are ready to fall off. Suspension is falling apart. Brakes are not safe for stopping power for the vehicle. Mastertech at ziegler tire.
Frame Failure, A licensed technician said my vehicle is dangerous to drive and cannot be fixed because of the advanced rusting of the frame. As I read the history of some Ford Trucks I find this is a continuing problem with no recalls and wonder why they can continue to manufacture faulty, dangerous products
There hasn't been any accidents but the rails underneath of the truck bed are rotting completely off the truck and I feel that would be a safety problem if it collapses and I don't understand why they're so rusty when the rest of the truck is not it this could be a problem!
Hitch broke off due to ford common frame rot. Frame is rotted from leaf spring shackle and back
Front springs to low
My 2004 ford f-150 has 61,000 miles and no rust on the outside of the vehicle. I've kept the truck well maintained and it looks almost new. The frame however right where the rear leaf spring attaches to the frame is rusted right through. It is incredible that this has not been recalled as of yet. Hopefully it will be recalled. While driving a part of the exhaust heat shield fell onto the driveshaft. When i went to inspect the underside i found a hole in the frame and i was able to put my finger right through it. *dt consumer stated one important fact that i forgot to add to my complaint is the section of the frame that rusted through has the exact same issue in the same spot on both the passenger frame rail as well as the driver's side frame rail. The 2004 ford escape was recalled for similar issues that year but in the front of the vehicle. My truck has only 61,000 miles on it and from forums and posts i've read it seems to be a major issue for that year vehicle.*jb
My vehicle has developed what i would refer to as a death wobble. At speeds from 40 to 55 mpg the front of the trick shakes as though it's going to rattle apart. This is clearly a ford issue and is now getting a good share of attention on you tube. There are a lot of us out there who have inheritated this from ford who is in constant denial of it's refusal to address and take corrective action to repair the buckleing of the front end. Structure 104 Read
Same deal as every other memo i read. Major highlighting points: - premature frame corrosion and rust. - mechanic informed me that the frame on the rear half. - rusted and cracked under bed and rear wheel wells - frame would no longer support weight of vehicle - rust thru holes and longitudinal cracks formed on the bottom and side frame surfaces at the stress point before the rear wheel bend. - extremely unusual, truck has been generally been garage kept and maintained in good mechanical condition. - the exterior body does not exhibits spots or surface rust on visible body panels. - no evident signs of rust or degradation of structure. - meticulously maintained vehicle otherwise. (new transmission, drive shaft, engine retimed, spray bed liner, etc.) - catastrophic failure of the frame structure was imminent and that the vehicle was no longer safe to drive. - cannot be repaired and is unsafe. - cannot pass a state safety inspection. - cannot even be put on a lift because it has no structural strength.
This a.m. As i entered my driveway, a neighbor stopped me to talk. I stopped and rolled down my window. He went on and on. Suddenly, my truck accelerated at full throttle toward my garage 70 feet away. My foot was on the brake to no avail. I turned slightly to the right and hit the corner of the garage. The air bags deployed. My glasses went flying. I was not hurt. A tree had soften the impact. I was severely shaken. My blood pressure was elevated. Ford motor company is not helpful. My insurance company, geico, is handling the issue.

The underbody frame is 95% rusted out, this vehicle is available for inspection upon request. I could have been fatally injured, not knowing the under frame was gone, until vehicle was taken in for new tires. The vehicle was inspected by Firestone tire and Gene Butman Ford. There were no warning messages and the problem was first noticed in 2019 and was told the vehicle was unsafe to drive, a hazard and should not be driven.
The truck has had a complete body frame failure. The entire frame is rusted through with large holes. I am unable to put it on a jack to change the tires. It has failed inspections and has not been inspected since 2019. I have a 1992 ford truck that has NO rust issue on the frame. This year is a complete design failure where they used substandard steel or other garbage. It is a safety hazard.

This truck has only been used three times in five months. It was parked on a parking pad unattended for three days an 10 hours. The main electrical wiring started a fire inside of the truck on its own. If it had not been found at 3:00 am it would have most likely kill two people in their beds. Updated 03/12/12 *bf *tr
