How to read a Kenworth T680 VIN — every digit explained
Every Kenworth T680 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this T680.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your T680 VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Unit driving down road and brake chamber failed causing brakes to slowly apply without operator being aware until seen smoke coming from drive axle brakes. The low air pressure light did not illuminate, stayed high enough not to illuminate a low air warning. 2 independent fire inspections proved this was a haldex brake chamber failure. The chamber was inspected and found it is in the range where haldex had manufacturing defects of the power coil in the parking chamber, haldex confirmed they have an issue with the 3030 chamber, and not issuing a recall even though public safety as risk. Spring brake broke and punctured the rubber diaphragm causing the driver to loose control of the braking system and causing another total loss of truck and trailer. Entire interstate had to be shutdown for a long period of time. Causing more risk to public safety the haldex chamber has a fatal design flaw that haldex has admitted to and can lead to loss of braking and brake fires, causing tire explosions and cargo explosions, when the spring compresses the power coat protective coating is damaged and causes the power spring to rust this rust then causes the spring to brake and puncture the internal diaphram of the chamber. Haldex is also aware that the metal used in making the spring cannot handle the pressure forced upon it without breaking either by tooling causing marks and fatigue in the metal itself. Nhtsa has also done its testing and confirmed all of these finding as well.
Unit driving on flat road, left front drives started smoking while driving on interstate brakes not being applied, driver stopped and by this time the fire had spread thru the under side of truck and trailer, total loss of truck, trailer and load, belived to be haldex brake can failure leaking air and causing brakes to drag and start on fire
Driver driving down hyway and wheel end started smoking, driver stoped and found haldex brake chamber leaking air causing brake to apply on thier own which resulting in 1 wheel end smoking the brakes changed out brake chamber and all burnt parts
While driving down hyway wheel end started smoking, driver stopped and found haldex brake can leaking air causing the brakes to drag and overheat
Driver driving down flat road near yuba city ca, brakes started smoking heat blew tire and started tires on fire complete loss of truck and trailer deemed haldex gold seal brake can failure thought to have caused fire and loss
Driver driving down flat hyway and brakes started smoking truck started on fire, fire deptment was able to get the fire under control before total loss of truck and trailer, 36,000 damage to truck plus the damage to trailer called in haldex tech rep during investigation found left rear haldex brake chamber failed which resulted in a loss of air pressure and causing the brakes to drag at hyway speeds causing the wheel end fire, brake chamber was later removed and disarmed and inspected and found spring had broken puncturing the air diaphragm causing the fire and loss known defect with this gold seal haldex brake spring
Driver driving down road in illionois right front drive axle wheel end brakes started smoking when brake not depressed, driver stopped found both tires in tact and fully inflated then tires started on fire while parked and could not be extinguished total loss of truck trailer and load, called in fire team determined haldex brake chamber on right rear failed and cause the loss of air pressure in the braking system brake drums showed extreme heat during the inspection resulting in the fire, joint inspection with haldex reveled known issues with the brake chamber spring , brake chamber was disarmed for inspection and was found the spring had broken and punctured the diaphram causing the loss of air pressure and uncontrollable brake application while driving at hyway speeds, broken parking springs in the haldex gold chamber with no known fix
Driver driving down flat hyway near easton pa right front drive axle brakes started on fire cause thought to be haldex brake chamber since having so many fail failures of this gold seal chamber and causing fires, total loss of both truck and trailer, driver confirmed right front heel end on fire and could not get it put out due to all the heat

I have 2 Kenworth trucks VIN [XXX] and [XXX] both on recall NHTSA 24V190. The recalls have been performed my issue is with reimbursement for prior replacement for the recalled parts. I have attached emails from Paccar as well as the invoices for the replacement of the recalled parts. Any help you can provide is appreciated as I'm not getting anywhere with Paccar or the dealers. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
The contact owns a 2023 Kenworth T680. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V190000 (Power Train) however, the part to do the recall repair was not yet available. The local dealer was contacted. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission was not operating properly. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the ABS, traction control, transmission, and hill assist warning lights illuminated. The dealer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 109,000.
Right-hand shift stalk between the shifter and the transmission is causing the vehicle to become disabled while stopped and unable to go from forward to reverse. Also getting SPN 639 pop-up when communication has been lost between the engine control module (ECM) and SAE J1939 data link. The check engine light illuminates, and the ECM immediately logs the fault code. Have to depress brake pedal while stopped & cycle gear selector to get fault to clear to start engine . Message also displayed Transmission Fault Repair Required Find Service Center . Also had new spring clutch replaced in May of 2024. Truck has 525k miles on it .
The clutch Spring on these trucks have been failing heavily. We have a couple more of these trucks and they all have the same issue. the housing for the clutch springs are cracked or damaged at less than 500,000 miles on a heavy duty truck. These clutches are supposed to last over 1MM miles. Its not a coincidence that every truck we have is failing at the same mileage. These clutches are made defective from the manufacturer. Its also a coincidence that the replacement clutches are not the original design and are of a newer design and brand. THIS is RED FLAGS!!!!
My circumstances are EXACTLY as described in a release 12/19/2019 Tech Service Bulletin A002 I experienced the vibration in my steering wheel that caused me to be suspect that there was something wrong in the drive train. Upon further investigation. I noticed that an oil seal was leaking, and when I dug a little deeper, I noticed gears that were broken and shaved down and then stopped at a Kenworth corporate location upon which they told me that I needed to purchase the entire unit to fix it. I then decided that I was going to add some differential oil and drive at a speed of 45 miles an hour, which did not cause any vibration to Chicago, which was roughly 3 hours away from my location in Michigan upon which I would have more resources at my disposal. It is then that I learned of the technical service bulletin relating to my issue. I then took it to CIT trucks which is where I learned that you do not have to buy the complete unit that. The parts are available to be purchased to fix the issue. They did, however say that they would process the claim on behalf of this technical service bulletin. They advised me that the individual that they got a hold of seem to have an attitude about it and sometimes this happens whereas other times they will get a hold of somebody that will make an exception. Apparently they stated my situation is two months out of warranty from when my tractor was placed into service but it’s original owner. I am not in a position due to other issues that I have experience with the truck since purchasing it in June that I can afford this but more importantly, there is a known issue with the same exact identical problem that I experienced. I need help with my situation they need to be held accountable for what has gone wrong because it is not my fault.
Throw out bearing failed prematurely. Truck only has 491,000 miles and has had a catastrophic failure resulting in a $29,000 repair bill. I have 4 other trucks like this and they are all showing signs of the same thing.
The clutch has a loose spring, Fork is damaged. Throwout bearing worn.

We have under hood fire during operating the truck. The driver was driving in TX. The police and fire department need to be involved to extinguish the fire. The truck need to be towed to terminal. The two dealers were doing estimate and the try to look up the causes of the fire, but is seems they not able to find it. We asked some privet mechanics and they think that fire could start from starter. The truck is 2019 T680 455,972 miles with engine Paccar MX-13. The truck is available fot inspection.
This Truck Was Park. The Paccar Engine MX13 and Chassis Harness from the Driver Side Shortaged, causing a Fire in the back of the engine and ABS Harness under the Steering Shaft. Plástic and Rubber wire insulation Melted with the fire causing it to drip on top of the water seperator cap which resulted in a fuel flame that caused even more damage throughought the outstanding components. This problem could've resulted in total loss of the unit.

We bought this truck with 401, 000 miles on it. So far we have had to replace the rear ends twice. the whole DPF system, the check engine light still on since the day we bought the truck. We have had 5 NOS sensors put into the truck, 6 input and output sensors put into the truck. This truck has been defective since the day of purchase. We keep having the same error code of p3770 come up evetime we take to shop. The error code has been looked at so many times that even the master techs don't know what is wrong with the truck other then we keep replacing the same stuff over and over again.

Takata recall mhc kenworth has replaced or corrected the drivers low beam light 5 times, 3 for fee and 2 as a cost to my business. The this headlight continues to malfunction and the light bulb is not even blown. The dashboard lights goes pitch black dark. The orange engine outline comes on every single time the malfunction occurs. This is not safe and we cannot continue driving this truck like this. The truck continues to misfire after the warranty covered the injectors replacement. Some times the entire electrical shut down in the truck. I need answers asap as this can cost thousands in fines and dot fees! This has occurred more than once, numerous times with the most recent being dec 2018 and jan 2019. The cabinet handles fell off and the both arm rests on the driver's side. This 3 year old truck is falling apart.
Bunk wiring harness is shorting out causing truck to not be able to shut off with the key....and also causing problems with the def system....shops are telling us that there are trucks burning down from this faulty harness...and there has been a recall for this but kenworth is not fixing this harness and expects the owner to fix it ....

The contact owns a 2023 Kenworth T680. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle and pressing the wiper fluid button, the wiper fluid did not immediately spray, and the contact was unable to immediately clean the front windshield. The contact stated the after several attempts the wiper fluid sprayer operated normally. Later, the front windshield wipers malfunctioned. The contact stated that when the front windshield wipers were activated in the continuous setting, the wipers were randomly delayed. Additionally, while activating the turn signal and the wipers the features were delayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed an electrical short in the wiper and turn signal mechanism, and that the mechanism needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 205,000. The VIN was invalid.
Seat belt frame cover was cracked and seat belt would not retract. The other side was broken as well with casing coming off. I was in the middle of backing for a delivery and the driver seat retract would not stay in place and the seat kept folding forward causing me to not be able to back the truck. I was told this is due to obese drivers causing the seat to break. Also during the time of my brake issue where are the brakes locked up and on several other occasions the air brake lost pressure for no reason.
The defrost doors in the t680 is weak and breaks often leaving the driver without any defrost causing his visibility to decrease in an unsafe manner. Kenworth has been unwilling to address this issue and repair it. When i contacted our district service manager he knew the part number of the replacement door assembly from memory and stated in an email back to me that kenworth has identified the issue and is working to fix it on future models. Labor to repair this is over $3000 and the part is another $886. We have 12 of these vehicles, so far 5 of the 12 have broken leaving more than one driver struggling to get off the highway before his window fogged up so bad he became unsafe to drive. The vehicles are in motion when these defrost doors break and it creates a very unsafe situation as trucks can not just pull over any spot they choose on the highways and wait for a window to thaw out. There are 2 issues that happen on these doors. 1 the door is overflexed by the electric actuator motor and snaps the drive cogs off of the door. 2 the doors either shrink or are too small to begin with and the drive cog does not make full contact with the actuator motor causing the teeth to strip out as in the photos attached. The drive cog should be extruded from the housing but as you can see are shrunk inside the housing. *tr
The defrost door has broken in this vehicle for a second time. The kenworth design is problematic and even the new parts only fix this for a short time. Driver no longer has defrost when this happens making it an unsafe driving situation. Vehicle was in motion at the time it broke.

My 2015 kenworth t680 from what i was told by the dealer shop has a defective fuel pump that causing the engine of my to stall in the middle of the highway almost caused me a terrible accident, but the manufacturer refused to take responsibility so i am placing this complaint to see if i can get any assistance, thanks.
I have always any lights on my truck / now cheek engine light on for ccv speedo rotor / sensor nox all most $3500 doller need fix / i don't have / before i lot money put on repair/
Apparently there is a failure of the fuel pump in most models of this cummins isx15 motor, tha when it does fail, shuts the truck down on highway, or worse, lik eit did to me....send metal shavings into the rest of the motor destroying the motor. There have been recalls for ceramic plungers, which i don't have...and recalls on many years this model was manufactured. I have an extended major component warranty that cummins will not honor since the fuel pump failure is not covered.....dealer has witnessed many failures of the fuel pumps and not always covered...even though repair or replacement of engine is in excess of $20000 to $35000 for a new replacement. This needs to be addressed with cummins !!
A vibration is felt during warm up and becomes very noticeable after shifting into 8th gear. If the air compressor kicks in while the engine is below 1300 rpms this also increases the vibration , again real bad shifting into 8th and air compressor running .note: i just bought this truck from kenworth sales company , salt lake city, ut i aint even put 2,000 miles on the truck, what kinda of deceitful ethics violations are practiced from this dealership?
Bunk wiring harness is shorting out causing truck to not be able to shut off with the key....and also causing problems with the def system....shops are telling us that there are trucks burning down from this faulty harness...and there has been a recall for this but kenworth is not fixing this harness and expects the owner to fix it ....

On sunday, the 22nd of march, i was traveling south on us hwy 45. The sky was clearing and the road was dry. I had my cruise set to 65 mph. As i approached an overpass, the distance sensor on the front of the truck mistook the shadow of the overpass as a stopped vehicle. Warning lights and buzzers went off and the vehicle did a hard brake. Luckily, there were no other vehicles around me. I took it to our shop and the system was cleaned. Four days later, the sensor mistook an overhead interstate sign for a stopped vehicle. Again, the warning lights and buzzers and a hard brake. Kenworth techs were sent out to our shop to make repairs. Every one of our drivers that i have spoken to have experienced the same thing multiple times. This is dangerous. If someone had been following me, they would have rear-ended my trailer.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 kenworth t680. While driving various speeds uphill, the vehicle lost power when the accelerator pedal was depressed. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal had to be depressed to the floorboard in order for the vehicle to accelerate. The failure recurred numerous times. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to many dealers and independent mechanics, but the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 117,000.
This truck is a misbuild from the factory on the brake system plumbing. I am concerned other units may also have been built wrong. The traction control locks up the front drive axle brakes when the truck spins a tire and kills the engine causing damage to the differential and loss of control of the vehicle. I have identified that the service brake air lines are hooked up incorrectly from the factory, not going through the abs modulator valve. This allows full brake application to the front drive axle service brakes when the traction control engages. It also makes the truck so the abs brake function is not able to function. We have blown apart 2 front differential units rendering the truck unable to move. Often when this happens it kills the engine so now you also loose power steering control. This is an extremely unsafe and illegal build on this truck. Abs is required by dot law and this truck does not have full abs function. I have contacted bendix, the maker of the abs and traction control they have confirmed the way this is hooked up will cause the brakes to lock up. I have attached pictures of the valve, you will notice that one air line comes from the module which goes to the rear brake. The other air line comes directly out of the atr6 brake valve, this line goes directly to the front driver service brake. It should also be run through the modulator valve for proper function. This has happened at all speeds in icy situations. It has happened on mountain passes and leaves the driver with no control. Urgent action required please. This has been going on for 3 years, we have spent many hours trying to figure out why this trucks brakes lock up. We have the kenworth dealer also look at it and they did not find the issue either. Currently this truck is at the kenworth dealer with a request for them to repair it and reimburse us our costs.
Forward Collision Avoidance 5 Read
I drive a 2022 Kenworth T680 equipped with a Bendix collision mitigation / automatic emergency braking system. On multiple occasions, the system has applied the service brakes hard with no real obstacle in front of the truck, creating a serious rear‑end collision risk for vehicles behind me. The events typically occur in rain, fog, or under overpasses and signs at highway speeds with cruise control engaged. The truck suddenly brakes without warning or driver input, dropping speed rapidly in the travel lane while traffic is following. I have documented dates, locations, weather, and traffic conditions for these incidents. In each case, there was no stopped or slowing vehicle in my lane that justified automatic emergency braking. This appears to be a “false positive” AEB activation similar to those NHTSA is already investigating on other Class 8 tractors, where the system misidentifies harmless objects or roadway features and commands an unnecessary stop. These false activations put me and other motorists at risk of a rear‑end crash. The dealer has indicated they are limited in how much they can disable the system for liability reasons, so I am submitting this as a safety defect report and requesting that NHTSA investigate this behavior on Kenworth T680 trucks with this collision mitigation system.
This truck was breaking automatically, and no one was front of the truck, it was scary, I almost crashed with loaded trailer on my back, it has done it multiple times, and my traction light and stability light is on all the time and adaptive cruise control had turned off completely abs light comes on and off frequently,
I started the truck after not driving for 1 day and a heavy rain storm the day prior. I attempted to drive bobtail when the brakes locked up. The traction control light came on then went back off. Then the adaptive cruise control notification came on. The regon came on then went back off. A speedometer sign with an exclamation mark came up and would not go away. After attempting to go down the road the brakes continued to lock up, would not release and caused the rear passenger tires to go bald and lose my job.
Automatic emergency braking is an absolute danger to the motoring public and needs to be eliminated immediately. I am sick and tired of engineer's who don't know their ass from a hole in the ground designing bullshit that doesn't work. Far too many false radar returns and unwanted hard stops to be of any use. I do not own this vehicle but if i did the first thing i would do right after i pull the fuse for the lane departure warning would be to isolate and bypass aeb. This will be done on any vehicles i purchase in the future and i do not care what the law states about doing so
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 kenworth construct t680. While driving through snow or ice, the vehicle's adaptive cruise control would flash as if the vehicle were approaching something and activated by stopping the vehicle in order to prevent a crash. The contact stated that the failure only occurred during this type of weather even when there were no other vehicles or objects nearby. The contact spoke with the kenworth hotline for vehicle breakdowns who stated that they did not consider this a failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 292,000.
Fuel/propulsion System 5 Read
My father was fueling this brand new truck with cng (compressed natural gas) when one of the tanks exploded. The truck was stationary at the ang (american natural gas) station in buttonwillow california at the intersection of interstate 5 and hwy 58. My father is in critical condition at the icu in ucla with multiple broke bones as well as bleeding and swelling on his brain. I have attached a photo of the truck.
There are numerous service bulletins on quantum's website, www.qtww.com , under products and service bulletins that say many different parts of their fuel systems will fail. It also states that their bracket system holding the tanks in place will allow the high pressure tanks to move laterally that could cause a rupture in the fuel lines or the tank itself. I have contacted them to have the parts replaced and they are refusing to change them or tell me how i can make my systems safe for my employees to operate. I have a huge concern for the safety of my employees while operating these systems until the parts that will possibly fail have been replaced. In addition they are not following the nfpa 52 guidelines for the location of the prd vents which in the event of a fire and the current location of the vents would discharge fuel directly into the flames. They currently are still not following the guidelines as of today. As i'm sure you can understand my concerns and would like to have these issues resolved for myself and anyone else that has purchased these fuel systems from this manufacturer. I have attached a few of the bulletins from their website that are issues with my systems to show that they are aware of the issues and if you like i can send you the email conversations between myself and quantum to show that they are not doing anything to rectify or fix the issues. Thank you in advance for anything you can do to assist us in resolving these issues and make our systems safe for our employees to operate.
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 kenworth t680. The contact stated that the manufacturer provided an extended warranty repair coverage however, the mileage of 435,000 miles was exceeded. The vehicle was not repaired.
