Who makes Lucid
Lucid Group, Inc. (Lucid Motors) is an American electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Newark, California. Founded in 2007 as Atieva by Bernard Tse and Sam Weng, the company initially developed EV battery packs for other manufacturers before pivoting to producing its own vehicles in 2016 under the Lucid Motors name. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) became Lucid's largest shareholder in 2018 and has provided over $7 billion in funding through 2024. The Lucid Air sedan, launched in late 2021, holds the EPA-rated longest range of any production EV at 516 miles (Air Grand Touring) and won Motor Trend Car of the Year 2022. The Air also achieved the lowest drag coefficient (0.197 Cd) of any production sedan and a 9.1-second quarter-mile (Sapphire variant). The Lucid Gravity SUV, launched in late 2024, shares the Lucid Air's drivetrain and architecture and competes with the Tesla Model X and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV. Lucid Group trades on the NASDAQ under LCID. Recall data for every Lucid VIN is reported to NHTSA. ForCar.org decodes any Lucid VIN to surface trim, factory options, open recalls and original window-sticker MSRP.
Atieva was founded in 2007 by Bernard Tse and Sam Weng with an initial focus on lithium-ion battery packs for industrial vehicles. Tesla co-founder Bernard Tse served as VP. After several pivots, the company rebranded as Lucid Motors in 2016 and announced the Air sedan. CEO Peter Rawlinson, formerly the chief engineer of the Tesla Model S, has led product development since 2013. Saudi PIF investment in 2018 enabled the Casa Grande, Arizona factory and 2021 production launch.

Where Lucid cars are actually built
A badge says where a company is registered, not where its cars were bolted together. The first three characters of any VIN — the world manufacturer identifier — say the second thing, and that is what we counted: 68 vehicles on record, 1 distinct manufacturer codes.

|---|---|---|---|
| the United States | 50E | 2022–2025 |
Read your own: the first character is the region, the first three together identify the plant's manufacturer. A Lucid beginning 50E was assembled in the United States.

Every Lucid built since 1981 carries a unique 17-character VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). It encodes where and when the vehicle was made, its engine and body — here's what each part means:
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Lucid and the country it was built in (real Lucid codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled it.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- USA50E · 7UU
The remaining digits — engine (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard. To decode a VIN number position by position, including the year-code table and where to find the number, use our free tool.
Who owns Lucid, and what you get
Lucid is independent, USA-owned and publicly listed as LCID. Lucid competes in the luxury EV segment against Tesla Model S/X, Mercedes-Benz EQS, BMW iX, and the Cadillac Lyriq, with positioning above Tesla on luxury craftsmanship and below Rolls-Royce Spectre on price. Annual production has remained below 10,000 vehicles through 2024 due to manufacturing ramp challenges. The Gravity SUV expansion targets the higher-volume luxury SUV segment to scale Lucid past startup-volume production.
