How to read a Mazda RX-8 VIN — every digit explained
Every Mazda RX-8 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Mazda and the country it was built in.
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this RX-8.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your RX-8 VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Power Train 239 Read
As i pressed my cars clutch to change gears (6 speed manual ) while driving on my regular sunday drive in a city street, i heard and felt a very loud explosion and noises of metal pieces ejecting from under my car. I was in the 60km/h zone so was not speeding or going fast such as on a freeway etc. I was able to pull over safely while rolling as the engine had been disabled in the explosion. I could feel my left foot was in extreme pain. My car would not start. I feared that the engine had blown up. My car is very well maintained and serviced regularly with no modifications. What i discovered was that the transmission had detonated, the gearbox bell housing was torn apart (got pictures to prove it) and i found parts of the clutch in many tiny pieces all over the roads. The clutch was replaced by mazda 30,000kms ago and at a mazda dealership using oem clutch kit. The force of the gearbox explosion was so great that the clutch pedal impacted my left foot and shattered the bones of the left foot in pieces (yes i was wearing thick soled sneakers) and caused severe trauma to my foot in general. At the hospital, the surgeons words were " it looks really bad". I was operated on and titanium plates and 4 screws were inserted to try to hold my shattered bones in place. 8 months and a lot of hospital visits later, i am still recovering from the day. I had further surgery few weeks ago to perform a bone graft because one break wasn't healing. I have approached mazda regional head office. Initially mazda contacted me via phone asking for details of the crash. I sent them photos via email. I have not heard from them since. I then also contacted the dealership. They promised to ring back and they too, have stopped. It's been difficult to find a lawyer who can see the obvious problem, that a vehicle should not blow up, or catch fire etc no matter what age it is. Help!
Car stalls at lights does not respond when accelerating have gone to back up and no response then car will just take off have had 2 accidents due to no acceleration fog and bugs in taillights airbag light on/off for no reason car has been to dealership for all recalls i am told i am not driving the car fast enough and am told i need to check my oil when i get gas. Too many problems to list dealer will fix but cannot duplicate some of the problems i experience have tried to contact manufacturer only to be put on hold to listen to zoom zoom music over and over. *jb
I was driving to work and as i was shifting gears i felt the car did not have any acceleration. The top speed i got to was 55mph. When i was about to get off the car, i saw smoke coming from under the hood and from inside where the shift know is located. I checked under the car for a possibly fire, and there it was. Apparently the catalytic converter had clogged up and that's what started the fire. Its not safe to drive around with a car that barely has 55,000 and already has problems like a fire. What if i the car caught in fire with my family inside. Cant imagine. I called an agency that told me the car had a safety recall, and had asked me if the dealer had provided with an inspection sticker which was not in the windshield. I wish i could have my down payment i gave back because i would not feel secure and safe driving a car (with my child and wife) with a car that turned on fire. *tr
Driving my mazda rx8 last night on a local highway shifting from fifth to sixth gear the clutch pedal gave way and doing 65mph and stuck itself under the brake pedal had to shut the car off and hit the e brake to stop. Lucky im not dead.
Engine failure, purchased car 3/11/2006, a couple of weeks later the car started idling roughly, then stalling, the computer module has been replaced twice, the engine once, i still have problems with acceleration, the last incident happened last week 7/29/2007, i was in the center lane pulling out into the passing lane and the car lost all power but did not stall my head was slammed forward almost hitting the stirring wheel and a few seconds later shot off like a rocket slamming my head back against the drivers seat, causing my neck to whip lash i have had a bad headache since, and i was almost hit by a big diesel truck. The car is in the shop again getting the oil and tires changed, and also getting checked for this problem but they are saying they could not find anything on the road test. Well it happens to me quite often when i go to pass someone on the interstate, it hesitates before it kicks in and someone is going to get killed. I am paying for a car that spends more time in the shop than out. I bought it 3/11/06 it stayed in the shop almost continually until 7/18/2006, and i was making payments. Now it is starting all over again with the rough idle and hesitation. I am getting to the point that i want my money back and i'll give them the car back. I am getting to scared to drive it. Now i find out today about other recalls the control arm i was not aware of, i guess that is why my car is starting to pull hard to the right, now i have to have that taken care of. I have moved 350 miles away and i can't leave until my car gets fixed and out of the shop, this is starting to be bull!!! Someone needs to do something i have a friend who also has an rx8 we purchased ours on the same day and she is having the same problems and hers is a 2006 where mine is a 2004, so mazda hasn't fixed the problem.*jb
Clutch pedal mounting bracket snapped at the bolt which results in clutch not engaging properly. The issue renders the car useless until repaired. It occurred to me on the highway and i was forced to make an emergency stop and have the car towed.
Clutch will not work
2009 rx 8 mazda vin#[xxx] i was driving down the freeway and all the sudden the cruise control shut off causing the car to immediately slow down by 10 miles an hour. The cruise control would not re-engage. I am now having an issue where it feels my abs is engaging when i first start driving in first and second gear. I have taken this car to the mazda dealership where they said they could not recreate the problem. They simply stated it could just be the 100+ degree texas weather. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr
Normal driving and the clutch pedal popped and became unstable. Shifting the card became difficult. After further inspection discovered the metal bracket for the clutch broke. *tr
Clutch pedal assembly snapped while driving at slow speeds. Only able to get car into gear while pushing pedal down and to the left. Could have been incredibly dangerous at higher speeds.

There is contamination in the oil. So much so that it is impossible to check the oil. I've gone 3000 miles and never been able to check the oil. Even after wiping the dipstick, simply putting it back recoats the dipstick, so that the oil level cannot be read. The dealer simply changed the oil, but did not fix the problem. They said mazda knows about this, but won't do anything about it. All letters to mazda-usa are ignored. Why does mazda ignore such a potentially serious hazard? This could be a major safety hazard if the engine were to seize on the highway because of lack of oil. *ak
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 mazda rx-8. The contact stated that the ignition cylinder on the vehicle malfunctioned. The engine warning light illuminated while driving approximately 55 mph and the vehicle stalled. An excessive amount of smoke was also bellowing from underneath the vehicle. The dealer stated that raw gas was being dumped into the catalytic converter which caused a fire to occur in the wiring harness. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and who stated that the wiring harness and the ignition cylinder needed to be replaced at the owners expense. The dealer called the mazda district representative to discuss the failure and they stated that there was nothing they could do. The vehicle was not repaired. Mazda filed case number 130341420 regarding the failure. The failure and current mileages were 43,358.
Tl* the contact owns a 2004 mazda rx-8. While driving at 45 mph the exhaust system overheated and caused unknown wires to overheat and smoke. The dealer advised there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The current mileage was 80,000 and the failure mileage was 72,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 mazda rx-8. He stated the vehicle hesitated to start and that while driving it failed to operate at minimal speed. He also stated the vehicle would not accelerate properly. The check engine warning light illuminated and he noticed smoke coming from under the hood and the middle interior console. An independent mechanic stated that the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that there was a previous campaign pertaining to the same failures; however, the repairs were made with the original owner. The contact is responsible for paying the repair cost. The contact stated the part was reprogrammed but not replaced as relayed to him by the manufacturer. No repairs had been made. The failure and current mileages were under 101,000.
Tl*the contact owns a 2004 mazda rx8. The contact noticed a failure with the engine on four different occasions. The vehicle lost power and would not accelerate properly. She also noticed a burnt, rubbery smell coming from the passenger console. She took the vehicle to the dealer three times and they stated that she needed a new motor. The dealer replaced the first motor in july of 2008 during her third visit. The contact noted that the dealer would attempt to repair the issue, but she was never able to drive home successfully without a failure occurring. She was recently informed that a second new motor would be needed. The vehicle has not yet been repaired. The manufacturer has not been notified. The current mileage was approximately 59,000 and failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
Engine light came on with no noticeable problems. Called dealer who advised bringing it in. On way to dealership, approx. 4 miles, car began to misfire, producing smoke from exhaust pipes. By the time i pulled into the dealership, smoke was coming from every area of underside of car, as well as interior. Wife following said flames were coming from both exhaust pipes. Car only has 37,000 miles, and all dealer servicing were done since purchase of vehicle. After 2 weeks of contact with home office, mazda has agreed to pay for repairs of exhaust system, but i am liable for physical damage to car which includes melted carpeting, spark plugs, etc. Was told both coils were the cause of problem. *tr
My 2004 mazda rx-8 catalytic converter went out twice in less than 1 year. My personal mechanics said to take it back to the dealer and that blogs on line said the engine would loose compression and the engine would go out completely. I read several complaints online about that very same thing. The dealer said they would replace the catalytic converter again. I said what about the low compression and engine failure down the road. And the service manager said that what the 100k warranty is for. I don't think that's right they should buy the car back from me. It is not dependable. It is at mazda city of orange park, fl. Phone # 904-7790600. *tr
The 2004 rx8 has internal seals fail prematurely. This causes the engine to "blow" by a loss of compression in one of the two rotor chambers. The problem being the car with still run with half power. I continued to drive to find help off the highway. The rotor that is not working is dumping gas into the catalytic converter. By the time i parked, i could smell burning fiber and plastic and the exhaust shot out several large chunks of red hot ceramic material. The catalytic converter was bright orange and the entire underside of my car is melted. Looking on internet under "2004 rx 8 engine failure" i have seen several other stories with similar results but worse. Is it possible that the fuel tank could explode with such heat so near if you continued to drive. This happens anywhere from 12,000 miles to 100,000 miles and beyond. Mazda knows of the engine defect and has extended the warranty on the motor as of may 2008. My car is at hancock mazda in dallas. They said damage amounted to $9,500.00 from heat. *tr

Air Bags 117 Read
Airbags failed to deploy after front and side impact accident resulting in significant damage (vehicle might be totaled). Speed at impact was approximately 40 to 60 mpg resulting in injury to driver and passenger. *tr
We were broadsided by a vehicle that ran a red light at full speed. The impact was on the passenger side. The car flipped over and skidded onthe passenger side then flipped back onto the drivers side and skidded before rolling over at least once. Not one air bag deployed. Thank god for the seat belts. They saved our lives. Injuries were concussions, sprained neck, injuries to lower neck, back and shoulder of passenger. We landed upside down, released our seat belts and crawled to safety with the help of police and fire. Our speed was about 25-30 miles /hour. Our car was totalled. The other driver was cited in the accident.
Front driver airbag did not deploy. *tr

Takata recall. Traffic came to a halt on the freeway. I stopped and was subsequently rear ended at high speed causing the driver side and passenger side air bags to deploy. Either the air bag itself or a projectile injured my eye. The skin on my eyelid was torn requiring 7 stitches. This was extremely traumatic and i wanted to be sure this incident was included in the investigation.

On september 15th, 2016 i had stopped to vacuum out my car at a car wash on highway 11 in attalla, al. Upon leaving the car wash i turned left onto pleasant valley rd at a slow speed in first gear. As i was turning i shifted into second gear i hear a breaking noise and the steering wheel abruptly spun to the left as the car went in a deep ditch flipping onto its roof, then hitting a small culvert and landing on it's side. As i was inspecting the vehicle to see what might have happened, the passenger lower control had broken and the ball joint had separated from the control arm.

On april 3,2012 at 10pm in buffalo ny. I was driving my 04 rx8 around a bend at 35mph. I experienced a jerk/twitch in the power steering. The indicator light came on instantly i lost the steering sending me into the front of a steel divider of a train bridge. I was taken to ecmc by ambulance. I luckily only suffered minor injuries to my back neck ribs head and shoulder. I am not one to sue nor am i'm going to pursue any legal action against mazda. I will say my airbags did not deploy my car was considered totaled $10,000 in damage. I just thought anyone looking to buy an rx8 should read on numerous sites that this malfunction is an extremely common problem that mazda is aware about but still does not wish to post a tsb or a recall. Love the car but have lost faith in mazda. Sincerely unhappy owner. *tr
There has been countless times where i am driving and my steering just wants to fail. Ok so now it fails and sometimes, without warning, jerks my wheel one direction. If i am not paying attention i could easily sideswip another car. It has done it while driving 55 mph and i have hit the center medium bending my rim and destroying my tire. I have brought it into the dealership and they can never get it with the light on. I have paid for two diagnostics where they have not been able to diagnos the issue. The one time i got it in they were able to see the light but once they plugged their stuff in it disappeared. They then said the terminals just needed to get cleaned charging me for that and less then 1 day later the issue was back. Sometimes it also does just fail when sitting stationary as well and the wheel just starts turning itself and eventually the light comes on. Please help in fixing this issue.

As a result, the contact crashed into a curb and the air bags failed to deploy. The contact did not sustain any injuries. A police report was not filed. In addition, the contact noticed that the rear passenger wheel well was curved and fractured. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician was unable to diagnose or repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 95,000. The vin was unavailable.
Power steering intermittently goes out. A search of the internet indicates that this is a known problem for mazda yet there are no recalls to fix faulty engineering. The radiator overflow leaks onto the connectors for the electric power steering causing corrosion and sporadic connections. *tr
Vehicle can turn left on its own with a faulty power steering rack and/or control module. *tr
While driving to work on day during a turn the power steering partially went out making the turn very difficult to hold and to straighten out after. Upon leaving work the steering worked fine until the next day when making a turn on my way home the same thing happened with the power steering but still no light indicating a problem. I then decided to take the car in but the whole drive to the dealership it would creak and not always want to turn completely making the trip take longer trying to avoid highways and to many sharp turns in fear of it locking up. This is very dangerous aspecialy coming out of winter season and going into spring with all the rain. This should be a recal in the us since it is a recal in other parts of the world.
Power steering failed at only 85000 miles, almost caused me to crash with my two toddlers in the back seats!!! Now it is going to cost me over 2k to fix it, i am a military wife, in germany, and almost crashed due to mazda's lack of quality!!!!
Tl* the contact owns a 2008 mazda rx-8. While driving 45 mph making a left or right turn, the steering wheel seized and became difficult to maneuver. The failure recurred numerous times. I took my rx in to get power steering issues fixed just to find out that the oil cooler lines were rusting out which is also a recall in other parts of the world but not the us. In the upper states this can be a massive problem if oil starts spraying all over the motor and the ground it could cause environmental, and safety hazards to other people on the road. If gone unnoticed it could easily cause engine failure and potential fires from the motor while on the road which no one wants, there's no reason this recall should not apply to the us, atleast the northernmost states.
Takata recall, my car suddenly stopped on the side, of the 101 freeway off the west lake village exit going south, and would not turn on. I had my car towed to the mazda dealership after finding out of the recall on the fuel pump and air bags on the mazda website. After 3 days at the dealership and being charged 3 hours of $115.00 hour they were not able to repair my car or replace the recall. They suggested for me to buy a new engine that would cost me $7000.00
The contact's grandson owns a 2006 Mazda RX-8. The contact stated that while her grandson was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who informed the contact that the vehicle had an oil pressure failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
Takata recall the vehicle was stuttering as i was driving home it wasn't hot or overheating or low on oil, i drove it home and shut it off i then later tried to start it it wouldn't start it just cranked and cranked it wouldn't even start or try to , the apex seals on this car went out which is due to the loss of compression which ultimately caused the sputtering, mazda is well aware of this issue as it was recalled almost a year ago but i didn't have the issue so i didn't see a need to get it replaced ! This issue is unacceptable as now i'm without a car please help me out !
My vehicle experienced a defect known to mazda to the extent of them issuing a recall (or ssp) in the canadian market due to use of corrosives and excessive wet seasons causing build up on and corrosion of the oil cooler lines. Mazda clearly stated in the canadian ssp (#76) that extensive corrosion could cause a leak and/or loss of pressure, and knowing that a loss of pressure or a significant amount of oil while the car was in operation would cause drastic mechanical engine failure by way of burning out the seals/rotors/bearings and eventual seizure or total loss of compression in the motor. The loss of oil pressure due to corrosion directly resulting from this caused my apex seals to overheat and no longer provide a seal to allow the motor to hold compression. Due to this failure directly caused by the known defect, and the fact that the issue was put in place for canada due to their high propensity for extended wet seasons and high use of corrosives to alleviate wintery conditions on the roadways, mazda should also have issued regional or case-by-case recalls of vehicles that experience this same defect in areas of the united states that experience similar conditions. Had i been travelling on the highway and not on a 25mph city road, i could have experience a major accident or incident because of my motor failure. There are numerous other cases of this defect showing in american vehicles across the country, from near me (in new england) to california that have been reported online. I can contact the licensed mechnic who dealt with the vehicle for copies of his work orders, and i have receipts to prove that i purchased oil cooler lines as replacements before i knew of the loss of compression and ruined motor. Mazda usa was of no help in alleviating the problem, and i am now out thousands of dollars on a vehicle that i had recently purchased before the event occurred
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 mazda rx-8. The contact noticed a fuel odor inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to moffitt volkswagen inc. (1960 old minden road p.o. Box 5855 bossier city, la 71111), and the contact was informed of a recall that may be related to the fuel odor. The dealer informed the contact that the vehicle needed to be de-flooded due to a blockage in the fuel system. The contact declined the repair and took the vehicle to an independent mechanic to have the vehicle de-flooded. A week later, the engine warning indicator illuminated and the odor intensified. The vehicle was taken back to the independent mechanic who diagnosed that the vehicle had a fuel leakage. The vehicle was towed to the moffitt volkswagen inc. Dealer and was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 16v793000 (fuel system, gasoline). After the repair, the engine indicator continued to illuminate and the odor persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 89,700.
I purchased/financed my vehicle on october 9, 2015 at hilltop nissan (258 route 10, east hanover, nj 07936) at 59,201 miles. On april 7, 2016, i went to start the vehicle and the vehicle would not start. I had it towed to mazda of lodi, so the service department can take a look at the vehicle. The service department contacted me and said it was the engine and the vehicle needs a new engine. The vehicle has only 63,545 miles on it, and since then, i drove only 4,344 miles in the six months. I asked the dealer, finance department for a warranty/extended warranty and the finance manager said, there are no warranties. I did not receive a white (square) piece of paper or booklet for warranty information or "as is" information. Now, i am paying $8500.00 for a new engine. Then, i searched online for any safety issues or recalls on vinrcl.safecar.gov. I found out that this vehicle has a devastating safety recall involving the airbags. (there was also a recall many years ago involving the engine, and that mazda rx-8 owners can return the vehicle, by choice, for a full refund??) the dealer, hilltop nissan, did not notify me about this recall. They sold me a used car with a serious safety airbag recall. (also: recalls on a engine) issue: i have a serious defect involving airbags that dispense shrapnel. I wonder what other serious safety issues involving the engine/vehicle that were not disclosed? Thank you *tr
The vehicle experienced a starting issue unexpectedly. One day it no longer wanted to start i towed it in to mazda they said the vehicle was flooded. Again in february 2015 the vehicle started experiencing the same issue having difficulty starting eventually it was taken in again to midas the issue again was due to flooding. I paid for the services and took the vehicle home. The next day the vehicle had trouble starting but eventually turned one as i was driving the vehicle in to mazda it shut down unexpectedly leaving me stranded mid intersection. Half an hour later the vehicle started. The vehicle was taken in to mazda for an inspection where they identified that the engine had lost compression with no reason behind it...mazda rx8 engines are very unreliable and a safety concern and it has to be due to manufacture defect...updated 03-16-15 *bf *tr

The incident occurred on 02/08/2023. Prior to this, I brought my car to the dealership due to a recall to fix gas mounting rings, recall number . I do not feel comfortable with their repairs and I do not believe that the dealership performed the repairs properly which caused my car to smoke and stall on the road and then caught on fire at their shop. They claimed that their own business insurance fire fixed the damages but I believe that the car is damaged beyond repair. Furthermore, they held the car since February 2023. Until now, July 2023 the Guam dealership is unable to fix my car. To add, the repairs they claim far exceed the market value of the car and the car is at a total loss. I consider it totaled. I do not feel safe driving this car. 2011 Mazda RX-8 Recall Item Affected: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE Date Announced: 09/24/2021Description of Recall: Mazda North American Operations (Mazda) is recalling certain 2009-2011 RX-8 and 2006-2007 MazdaSpeed6 vehicles. Mazda recalled all 2004-2008 rx8 models for fuel pump and lockring gasket assembly leakage. My 2009 rx8 has the same issue and starting leaking gas on 1-02-2020 while parked in a garage. I called mazda and was told there were no recalls; however my car has the same problem the 2004-2008 models had. Now i have to pay close to $1,000.00 for repair that should be covered under the recall.
While driving i noticed a fuel smell coming through my vents. After checking around the engine compartment i saw fuel pooling on the engine passenger side. I'm unaware at the moment of the cause add i am taking it to be checked at the dealer tomorrow. *tr

On september 30th, 2017 i took my 2005 mazda rx8 to the gunther mazda dealership located at 1800 south state road 7 (441), fort lauderdale, florida 33317 for recall work of the fuel pump seals. The next day i filled the tank and went to work, i drive form hollywood to boca raton daily. The smell of gasoline was strong and my tank wasn't lasting as long as usual. I called gunther mazda and was told to bring the car in on saturday october 7, 2017. The service person, ron, said he strongly smelled the gasoline and said it was a carbon build up on the throttle and that his foreman would look at the car. I signed paperwork, but didn't receive a copy. I got there about 10:30, at about 11:50, i was informed that the problem was my catalytic converter. I filled the tank with gas and my mechanic took the back seats off. The fuel pump seal was filled with gasoline, the car was leaking gasoline and fumes in the cabin were overwhelming. When i called gunther mazda to speak with ron, i was hung up on 3 times. When my husband called he was met with extreme rudeness and told that it would cost about $130 for them to reexamine the car. It is absolutely unconscionable that the gunther mazda located at 1800 south state road 7 (441), fort lauderdale, florida 33317 would let me drive away from their dealership knowing that the fuel pump seal was faulty. My car could have blown up killing me and maybe others. My mechanic removed the assembly to repair and said the install was incorrectly done. He will be sending me additional pictures of what he found.

I had many recalls done last year. Now, today, oliver at mazda corporate said that joe machens dealerships aren't equipped to have done the work properly. Recalls: 16v793, 17v-354 & 355, front end stearing from inappropriate caulking of ball joint , engine replaced twice, oil mixing with coolant, again, and now my alarm goes off as soon as i start it. Joe machens told me to remove the battery. A new lithium battery is being developed by mazda because rotary engines can't use a regular battery. They had my car for six weeks last year, august, and kept yelling that they didn't have the new, correct parts. My stearing is difficult at times and they never told me about the recall concerning this. The seals deteriorated making issues. Now they are making new gaskets, rings, etc. To be heat resistant. They are fighting me, again, while they have admitted my car needs proper fixing with proper parts from inappropriate work done last year. One corporate worker said maybe a new engine should have been done with proper parts. Yet not at a dealership, at a mechanical shop that knows how to work on rotory engines. My car was parked in my lot. I had my oil checked to have fluids changed with valvoline because of their offer for 150,000 miles on engine if using their oil. I couldn't go forward with this because of the same issues . Oil foamy, alarm goes off, faulty light they knew about also. It worked before they did recall work on it. It is not safe for fire hazard, stearing difficulty, goes through a lot of oil since they worked on it. Ignition switch recall they never did. Were supposed to contact me when parts arrived. I will need to fax you paperwork. Many pages. Also shows how they x'd out one recall concerning gaskets. I couldn't check the boxes as i wished to report.
**resubmit-didn't go through** i was driving approx 65 mph on the freeway and felt a kick/jolt and had a loss of power. My speed went down10-15 mph and although i tried to accelerate it wouldn't do anything. I pulled over to the shoulder and tried to exit but car refused to go into gear. Every time i forced it into gear, the car would constantly stall and die. I had the ignition coil and spark plug replaced but now the clutch just sinks to the floor. I've tried to pump the clutch to get it into gear but this is quite dangerous on the road. My vehicle has trouble controlling its speed since there's a lag switching from 3rd to 4th, 5th to 6th since i have to pump my sunken clutch several times and fiddle with the shifter to actually kick my car into the next gear. My car is now over 100k miles and just read about the mazda rx8 clutch pedal recall online. This malfunction/safety issue was never announced professionally by my dealer. Mazda had no problems contacting me via phone, email ,mail regarding bills but for some reason failed to give me a notice regarding this defect. I've been advised that repairing this problem is quite expensive and since my car although less than 8 years old has passed the extended warranty based on mileage, i'll be stuck driving this car without proper repairs? I feel mazda should've contacted all rx8 owners to reduce the number any future disasters. Would there be any chance to extend the warranty for the clutch pedal based on mileage over 120k? I can't afford to purchase a new car at this moment but need to still commute to work without paying for repairs that would cost me an arm and a leg at the dealer? If this is a recall issue, i would feel more safe having an authorized dealer inspect the problem rather than a cheap auto shop that isn't fully aware of specific details. *tr
Failure of clutch pedal assembly. A plastic plate cracked and caused an irritating plastic binding noise, ever time i released the clutch pedal. This apparently happens a lot, sometimes it is fixable but in my case i had to replace my entire assembly, as i was told if it completely cracked i would lose the function of my clutch pedal. Failure of the passenger side power lock actuator. I have read many accounts of this part failing. Usually blamed on hot or cold claimant, however mine just failed earlier this week, with weather in the mid 40's. Just from the amount of postings i found when this happened to me it needs to be reported. *tt
The rotary engine rx8 (my 2005) continues to have starting problems. I have just over 100,000 miles on my vehicle. I've replaced the starter three times now, the spark plugs at least twice, three batteries. It is an unreliable vehicle and has had to be towed six times now. Obviously a dangerous situation in that you don't know if the car stalls if or when you can restart the vehicle. *kb

I purchased a mazda rx8 new in 2009. I have noticed the passenger dash cracking. At first it was small lines, and i thought it was the normal look of it, but over time the cracks got bigger. I went to my mazda dealer and they told me that other customers had same issues and they are still waiting for a mazda recall. I have even seen other similar complaints online. I was driving on i4, and went to shift from 4th gear to 5th gear; i heard a snap and the clutch pedal went to the floor. I then had about 2 inches of travel in my clutch pedal. The clutch pedal breaking is a known issue with mazda rx8s. No, i do not have a heavy duty clutch. *tr
The passenger side dashboard area is all cracked up ad split open. There is no reason for it to be cracked or split. The cracking following the shape of the airbag that is underneath the dashboard. It has very jagged edges and exposes the airbag to excess light and moisture by being split open in so many places. The dashboard structure is now weakened due to all of the cracks. An explosion from the airlock would be more powerful than necessary because it no longer needs to break through the plastic. This appears to be a safety concern. Dealers only state it as a cosmetic concern and do nothing to correct it. *tr

There are hundreds of complaints about this problem and i don't understand why a recall has not been issued. My car has been in the garage since i purchased it so sun is not the cause of this problem. I would like to know what i can do about this problem and how can i get the manufacture to repair and take responsibility before someone is seriously injured or killed. *tr
I purchased a 2007 mazda rx-8 new from a mazda dealer. I started noticing that the dashboard on the passenger side starting cracking around the area where the air bag is located. I have reached out to ocean mazda and to mazda usa. No one took the time to call me back. I am very upset and concerned that the air bag may deploy without warning since the dash is cracked or worst case scenario that the air bag will not deploy correctly when in a collision. This very is in great condition with very low miles and should not have a dashboard that only cracks around the perforation lines of the passenger side airbag. *tr
I purchased a 2007 mazda rx-8. I started noticing that the dashboard of the passenger side starting cracking around the area where the air bag is located. I have reached out to ocean mazda and to mazda usa. No one got back to me. I am very concern that the air bag may deploy or worst case scenario that the air bag will not deploy when in a head on collision. The car is well maintain and there is no reason why the dashboard only on the passenger side around the airbag is all cracked. *tr
Takata recall. My 2006 mazda rx8 has had two recalls done on it. The 2nd owner had it done and afterwards a small crack started from one point where it was repaired. We had it done in gainesville again and brought it to their attention. They said they couldn't do anything except to buy a new dash. The cracks have continued to spread and i'm concerned that if the air bag inflates personal injury could be done to the passenger from parts of the dash exploding. I will not allow anyone to ride it the passengers seat because of this. This continues to get worse over time not on a certain day. We keep a sunshade in the window hoping that will slow it down but to now avail. This is a pleasure car and only as less than 36000 miles on it and it not abused.
