How to read a Rivian R1T VIN — every digit explained

Every Rivian R1T carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

FIG.02
1–3 · WMI1HG
4–8 · VDSCM826
9 · Check5
10 · YearR
11 · PlantA
12–17 · Serial004352
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Rivian and the country it was built in.
  • VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this R1T.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
17 CHARS·SOURCE SAE / ISO 3779

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

Where to find your R1T VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.

2025 R1T

passenger airbag gets deactivated while there is an adult setting in the passenger seat.

2023 R1T

No changes to the car happened before the airbag system went out.

2023 R1T

Rivian passenger airbag is usually disabled (70 % cases) with adult passengers weighing about 125 lbs while they sit correctly in the front passenger seat. There is a warning light "Passenger airbag off". No problems with heavier passengers (> 140 lbs). There are tons of threads about this issue on Rivian forums, Reddit or Facebook groups. Based on these threads, sometimes Rivian service centers try to fix it (often unseccessfully) and sometimes they say it's normal. I've contacted a Rivian service through the Rivian app and they told me that it's a normal behavior because 125 lbs is near the treshold. But I never had similar issues with other cars.

2023 R1T

The passenger side airbag notification shows that the airbag is disabled when a passenger is seated in the seat and the car is moving. This happens very frequently when driving at various speed. If the passenger is not seated exactly at 90 degrees deeply in the seat in a perfect position, the airbag will be disabled. The sensitivity of the airbag sensor is very concerning. No one will sit straight position perfectly in a car, especially on longer rides and this is very scary to put the passenger at risk. The vehicle has been brought up for service for this particular issue and there has been no resolutions as it is deem "per the specs" by the service center. The problem has been reproduced by them, but again it was not repaired or fixed since it is diagnosed as normal operation.

2023 R1T

Concern: - Passenger seat not detecting person sitting in it. Airbag not arming. Cause: - The Occupant Classification System (OCS) uses a pressure sensor in the seat bottom to classify whatever is in the front passenger's seat. An improperly seated occupant can "trick" the OCS into possibly classifying the occupant incorrectly. Being improperly seated can include improper use of child restraints, improper posture such as leg placement, reclining the seatback too far back, weight of the passenger that is too close to threshold values (movement might effect the narrow weight distribution, gray zone), and using aftermarket cushions and coverings on the seat. If the occupant is a child in a properly secured child-restraint, or if there is no occupant in the seat, the "Passenger Airbag OFF" telltale is expected to be illuminated. For adults, the "Passenger Airbag ON" telltale should be illuminated at vehicle startup. At this time, the occupant protection sensors and modules are functioning as designed.

2023 R1T

While driving with a passenger in the front seat, I noticed the passenger airbag was not enabled. Seems the passenger is not detected. Sometime having the passenger moving around or adjusting the seat/seatbelt would fix the issue and the airbag will enable. Randomly occurs and randomly fixes. Once it is enabled it seems to stay enabled for the remainder of the drive.

2023 R1T

Front Passenger airbag sensor does not recognize when a passenger is sitting in the seat. Airbag sensor turns off and on while driving depending on how passenger sits. If passenger shifts slightly forward the airbag sensor no longer detects them. I have never seen an issue like this in any other vehicle.

2023 R1T

Hello, I have a concern about the passenger side airbag in my 2023 Rivian R1T pickup truck. My wife is very small (weighs about 110 lbs., 5'2" tall). I've noticed on several occasions that when she's sitting in the passenger seat the airbag sensor will turn off because it's not detecting her sitting there. This happens more often if she crosses her legs or reclines the seat too much. As if she's not putting enough weight directly on the seat airbag sensor. I understand this is a common complaint and have seen many threads about it in the online forums and on Reddit. I spoke with the Rivian Service Center in Gaithersburg, MD, on Nov. 1 and was told it is "within spec". However it is my opinion that they should look into the weight threshold on the seat and ensure that it stays on when people are sitting there. Perhaps by tying it into the seatbelt buckle sensor? I am entering this complaint in hopes of drawing more attention to the issue so that Rivian might look into it. Thank you.

The front passenger airbag sensor goes on and off when my passenger sits in the front seat. My passenger is 133 pounds and sometimes it triggers the "disabled" airbag icon and sometimes it doens't. It's very inconsistent and I fear that if it is in the disabled position at the time of an accident the airbags will not deploy. The vehicle has not been inspected by a licensed professional, manufacturer or police.

The Rivian R1T's passenger airbag does not engage if you weigh less than a certain amount. I am 5'2" and 120 pounds, and the airbag is "off" if I sit in the passenger seat. Some Rivian dealers say it is set at 135 pounds; one dealer said it is set at 150 pounds. When we complain to Rivian, they say the car is "functioning as designed," but will not tell us what those design parameters are. I cannot ride in my own car.

We were driving on the highway going 70 MPH when we heard a loud bang, and then the car immediately catapulted to the right off the road and slammed into the concrete right median, spun around hit a sign and then ended up in the right bridge barrier (shoulder). During the crash 6 airbags deployed from the impact of the crash. The highway patrolman stated that you could see the driver-side rear wheel started skidding based on the marks on the road. We thought it was a blown tire. But the tires were all in tact. The driver-side rear wheel was turned out and it was clear that the toe-link joint had separated from the wheel axel and this is what caused our crash. The car has been totaled by insurance company and taken salvage yard in Knightdale, NC. We were both wearing seatbelts, and I (the passenger) was thrown around during the crash and ended up going to the hospital with neck and back pain. I have severe neck misalignment and soft tissue damage on my neck and back. I was unable to work for 4 days after the accident and still am not able to sleep well due to pain. We were in the right hand lane of the highway and did not hit any other cars, but if we had been in a different lane we could have hit another car and caused more injuries and damage. The problem that caused the accident was the problem that was listed on the product recall, we had an appointment to get it fixed the next day. We had the car towed to the Rivian service center where they verbally confirmed it was the toe link that separated. It was inspected by the police, the Rivian Service Center and our insurance adjuster. There was zero warning prior to the loud bang other than the recall notice We

I leased my Rivian on June 28th. Around July 21st, the vehicle started to drift to the left. On August 19th, my vehicle started to develop bump steer over uneven road surfaces. I brought my vehicle in for service on August 20th. From August 20th to now, my vehicle has had 3 alignments performed, none of them have been maintained spec. Attached are screenshots/pictures of the alignments. Between the first and second alignment the vehicle was driven about ~50 miles. Between the second and third it was driven about another 50 miles. I do not have exact mileage as Rivian has not released service records to me. My vehicle does not track straight on any surface. In addition, because of the regenerative breaking of the Rivian, when you stop the vehicle it pulls significantly to the right, approximately a half lane for every 75 feet. My concern is that the vehicle cannot maintain an alignment over the course of ~110 miles, does not track straight, exhibits bump steer, and Rivian has no available solve to this behavior.

The 2022 R1Ts has a welded subframe that is prone to cracking due to the vehicles weight. The symptoms are a metal on metal clunking and creaking sound from the front end. In 2023 Rivian replaced the welded subframe on the R1T with a cast subframe that is stronger. I raised this issue to Rivian on 3 separate service appointments over the course of 3 years while my vehicle was under warranty, each time I was told that the sounds are normal. Now that my vehicle has just passed the 60,000 mile warranty period I am now being told that the truck needs the subframe replaced with the gen 2 retrofit kit at a cost of $11,500. As you can see by this Reddit thread, this is a systemic issue with the 2022 R1T and many customers have experienced cracks in the welded subframe- [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

2022 Rivian R1T, VIN [XXX] . Recurring suspension defects since delivery June 2022, documented across 18 service visits over 3.5 years. Rivian performed multiple repairs including Gen 2 suspension component replacement. This defect has never been permanently resolved. On July 11, 2025, El Segundo service center [XXX] ) repaired the front end lowering in standard parking mode — causing the vehicle to sit unlevel and knock the tires out of alignment when driving off. They repaired the suspension and corrected the alignment. In August 2025 a related defect appeared: when exiting camp leveling mode, the vehicle does not return to drive height. Instead it behaves as though still entering camp mode, forcing a slow drive-away during which the vehicle behaves erratically, knocking tires out of alignment — the same mechanism as the July parking mode issue. I reported this to Rivian in fall 2025. Despite scheduling three appointments — January 21, February 10, and March 14, 2026 — El Segundo failed to complete service all three times due to inability to provide a promised loaner vehicle. Suspension unserviced since July 11, 2025 — 9 months. On March 31, 2026 I filmed the front end lowering in parking mode recurring — same defect supposedly repaired July 2025. While preparing to pull out of a parallel street parking space in my R1T with a car 3 feet in front of me, I stepped on the brake to engage Drive from Park. On releasing the brake, before stepping on the accelerator, the R1T surged at a high rate of speed hitting the car straight on, deploying the air bags in the car and blowing the rear window out of the car. The car was pushed past an empty space, 20 ft or more, into another parked car. This all happened in 2-4 seconds. The R1T surged as if the accelerator had been push to the floor surprising me and pushing me back on the driver seat. The R1T stopped when I braked. The car was totaled. The driver of the car was taken to the hospital with minor injuries but might lead to later back and neck injuries. At no time did the R1T's alarms activate. The R1T is estimated to go from zero to 60 MPH in 3 seconds. Although contacted and advised of the accident Rivian has not accepted responsibility or offered proof otherwise. The only way to prove if this accident was either driver error or systems error is to get an analysis of my R1T computer system for the 2-5 minutes before, during and after the accident. I have requested this report from Rivian 4 times and have spoken with 3 people and have 2 emails. At no time while speaking with Rivian employees was I told they cannot do the analysis, until the final response which came from the Rivian legal Department, sixteen days after my first request. The report stated - "Rivian requires a valid subpoena to provide vehicle data.” From my Rivian R1T computer screen: "Rivian Data Analysis: Shares precise location data with Rivian for data analysis, which are used to improve our products and services.” I do have an insurance case number and a police report number on this accident. We have owned the truck since 8/2022.

I was driving late night to a campsite in a very rural part of the Big Island of [XXX] , about 45 minutes from where I live. I was by myself except for my dog, in the passenger seat. I was on a country road with a 30 mph speed limit, going about 25 mph. I engaged the cruise control and it immediately went up to 40-45 mph, far faster than the limit and far faster than was safe given the wet conditions and windy road. As I tried to slow the car down, using the steering while cruise control adjustment buttons, I steered through a curve and rather than turn with the road, as I had intended, the truck slid off the road to the left, effectively hydroplaning, into two trees, at about 40 mph. The airbags deployed as the truck came to a complete halt against the two trees. The car automatically called 911 as I sat there trying to assess what had just happened, whether I was hurt, and whether my dog was hurt. I told the 911 operator that the truck had called them automatically adn that I was ok and I would call in the morning after assessing what had happened. I am waiting for the police report and also waiting for the incident report from Rivian, which has an on-board log of events. I don't know why the cruise control engaged at such a high speed, rather than at the posted speed limit, but this appears to be a known flaw with Rivian's cruise control that I was not aware of. The cruise control and software are available for inspection by NHTSA. There is also an active recall on this vehicle that I was aware of but had been unable to schedule for service yet b/c it required shipping the truck to [XXX] on a barge. I had only had the truck on island for a little more than a month. From previous operations I had no reason to believe that the cruise control was faulty. It is possible that the recall issue may have been a contributing factor to the crash but I don't know b/c the vehicle has not been inspected yet by Rivian. They have scheduled an adjuster to come on April 14. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I do not own this vehicle. I was however, injured by the driver of the 2022 rivian launch edition. I was rear ended (while i was stopped waiting for a read light) at a relative high speed for road conditions. After studying the owners manual, there are multiple collision avoidance warnings, audible, visual and haptic (vibration of the steering wheel) when a collision is imminent. Furthermore, the automatic emergency braking feature and brake assist should completely prevented me from being rear ended and injured as a result. I appears that the vehicle actually accelerated into the rear of my vehicle. Due to the weight of the vehicle (7150lbs), the "skateboard" low center of gravity of the frame, the 0-60mph in 3 seconds power (850hp - 908lb-ft torque) and the protruding front tow hook, and the above safety features not operating as designed, a high concentrated amount of force struck my vehicle and as a result is was injured. The Driver+ (D+) feature on the Rivians have both adaptive cruise control and lane centering active at the same time. There is a function unknown to me that controls whether or not the D+ feature can turn on or remain on. In certain situations, the D+ features asks the driver the disable the system by pushing the right stalk upward with a red message on the gauge console screen. In other situations, the D+ feature forcibly disables with a similar red message on the gauge console screen. The messages themselves look very similar at first glance and require the driver to look down to discern between the two because the outcome for both scenarios is very different, particularly when D+ forcibly disables itself. When D+ disables itself (again the reasons are unknown to me at the time and not predictable other than maybe GPS location), there is a VERY brief warning to the driver then turns off and automatically brakes the vehicle. This D+ error is not as common as the other warning described above that asks the user to push the right stalk upward to turn it off. Once D+ forcibly turns itself off, the vehicle brakes aggressively. Due to muscle memory of the other similar-appearing error, it is normal to push the right stalk upward to disable it. Herein lies the issue: the vehicle is aggressively slowing down and pushing up on the right stalk (seemingly to disable D+) actually puts the vehicle into Reverse drive. This is because the vehicle does NOT require the brake pedal to be pressed to change into Reverse at low speeds (threshold unknown). This results in unpredictable and unexpected behavior of the vehicle within the matter of a few seconds. When the driver thinks they are disabling D+, they are unexpectedly putting the vehicle in reverse, so when accelerating from the stop caused by D+ the vehicle moves in reverse. This is most prevalent when using D+ in stop/go to light traffic and resulted in reversing on the freeway into another vehicle.

Rivian alerted me that there was a “service action” related to the hub, and while waiting for that appointment, the hub came loose while driving and began grinding against the brakes and went into full system shutdown. The truck needed to be towed and the hub and brakes needed to be replaced. The truck was undrivae while driving at highway speeds and could have crashed. When questioned, the service center reiterated that this was “not a recall” but simply a head up. The repairs were covered under warranty.

The vehicle’s Driver+ advanced driver assistance system (including Adaptive Cruise Control and Highway Assist) repeatedly failed during normal highway driving. The system would display “Driver Assistance Features Unavailable – Service Soon” and immediately disable all assisted-driving functions, even in clear weather and well-marked lanes. This occurred intermittently from approximately 1,200 miles onward and continued for over a year despite multiple repair attempts by the manufacturer’s service centers. The malfunction directly affected safe operation, as the system could disengage without warning at highway speeds, forcing sudden driver intervention. The issue was reproduced and documented by the manufacturer’s technicians during at least one service visit, which resulted in replacement of the vehicle’s driver-assistance computer. The failure continued even after that replacement. The vehicle has been inspected and serviced numerous times by the manufacturer, with diagnostics performed on the cooling system, cameras, sensors, and ADAS module. Each repair attempt either failed to duplicate or failed to permanently correct the defect. The safety risk is loss of Adaptive Cruise Control and Highway Assist functions while driving, unexpected disengagement of automated steering/braking, and lack of reliable warning timing to the driver. Warning messages appeared frequently throughout 2024–2025, beginning within the first few months of ownership. The defect remains unresolved and appears systemic rather than isolated to this vehicle.

1. The powertrain, acceleration system, and defrost system failed. The vehicle unexpectedly entered Limited Performance Mode, but instead of allowing reduced acceleration as expected, it resulted in a complete loss of power and left us stranded in traffic. Additionally, a defrost system failure warning appeared, causing a loss of visibility. The vehicle is currently at a Rivian service center, and it should be available for inspection upon request. 2.The vehicle became completely unresponsive while on a single-lane on-ramp overpass, leaving us stranded in moving traffic. Other vehicles were traveling at 50-60 mph, and drivers had to swerve abruptly to avoid a collision. This failure created an imminent risk of a rear-end or multi-car accident, putting my wife and me—and other drivers—at serious risk of injury or death. Additionally, the defrost failure further compromised visibility, making it even more dangerous to remain in the vehicle while waiting for assistance. 3.The vehicle is currently at the Rivian service center, but Rivian has not yet provided a definitive diagnosis or explanation for the failure. We are awaiting their response and further inspection. 4. The vehicle is at Rivian’s service center, where it is undergoing inspection by the manufacturer. I picked up this vehicle brand new from a Rivian service center. On the way home after approximately 90 miles, the screens lit up with a message saying Critical Battery Issue: Service Vehicle Immediately. In addition to the warnings on the console, there was a very loud beeping sound that did not stop. My understanding of the issue from speaking to Service and reading forums is that there is a software issue interacting with the battery which can cause this issue and eventually the vehicle to brick. It could cause a safety issue because in my case, it happened out of nowhere and forced me to pull over to the side of the road to protect myself and my family and the vehicle. In attempts to tow it to the service center, we also discovered that it was not possible to place the car in neutral which made it difficult to place on the tow truck. Had the car shut down entirely, I am not sure what the option would have been. To the best of my knowledge, Service has not officially diagnosed or determined the issue with my vehicle. Some of the information I have provided comes from research in online forums where others were encountering this problem at least back in 2022. It concerns me that there is still an issue especially as this was a brand new car and this manufacturer is attempting to ramp up production. It seems plausible there could be many more cars on the road soon and many/all contain this issue. There were no indications whatsoever before the message and noise began and I was driving down the highway at a normal and constant rate of speed.

The vehicle experienced a failure of the air suspension system, initially presenting with warnings indicating the vehicle was raising and advising not to drive to avoid damage. Shortly thereafter, the vehicle became visibly uneven, tilting approximately 2–3 inches to the driver side. I took the vehicle to Rivian service, where they confirmed the air suspension had failed. The repair was not covered under warranty, so I initially declined service while attempting to escalate the issue. During this time, the condition worsened significantly, with the vehicle continuing to tilt and the suspension actively lowering while driving. On multiple occasions, the vehicle became unstable and began bouncing uncontrollably, making it difficult to steer and maintain control, creating a serious safety risk and potential for collision. The issue was ongoing and reproducible. I ultimately proceeded with the repair and had the suspension system replaced; however, following the repair, the vehicle is now tilting in the opposite direction (passenger side), indicating a continued or recurring failure. The vehicle is available for inspection, and a follow-up service appointment is scheduled. The cause appears to be a failure of the air suspension system and/or improper repair, though the exact root cause is unknown.

My vehicle is subject to an active safety recall involving a rear toe bolt that Rivian has identified as potentially shearing and causing loss of vehicle control and a crash. I am located in Ketchikan, Alaska. Rivian does not offer mobile or field service for this recall and requires the vehicle to be transported to either Anchorage or Seattle for repair. Transport to Anchorage is not possible, and while transport to Seattle is possible, there is no viable or predictable way to return the vehicle to my location, potentially leaving me without my primary vehicle for several months. Rivian has stated they will not cover transport and has not provided a feasible alternative. This leaves me without reasonable access to a safety recall remedy and effectively requires me to either operate a vehicle with a known safety defect or surrender it indefinitely. I am reporting this as a lack of reasonable access to a safety recall repair.

I was driving about 35-40mpg when the right rear toe link snapped due to inproper torquing. I believe the bolt had backed out then snapped. When I contacted rivian they initially blamed me for it before even in before inspecting the vehicle. Once they inspected it they stated it would be covered under warranty. There was no paint on the bolt to show proper torque had been applied. Which is a standard process for rivian. I had asked them to please check the left rear toe link as well and make sure it’s all torque properly or even replace the link since they are one time use parts. They did not check it they did not paint mark any of the left side. They did paint mark the right side. The result of this link snapping out my family in great danger by sliding across the road and almost going into the mountain side. We were on the freeway while this happened I would not be writing the report. I beg you to please look into this matter. I no longer feel safe putting my family into the vehicle as I am scared something else was not put on correctly. They also stated in the service report that the halfshafts were not seated properly which could have caused a catastrophic accident. Thank you

The suspension system has failed three times. The entire system has been replaced by the dealership twice under warranty. The most recent failure has not been addressed, as the dealer is now refusing to make further repairs. The suspension issues significantly affect vehicle handling and steering during normal operation. Under heavy acceleration, the vehicle becomes difficult to control, posing a serious safety risk.

Truck without warning, suddenly stopped and I was on one of the busiest streets in Los Angeles at an intersection, blocking a large amount of traffic and too dangerous to get out due to cars rapidly passing. Called Rivian support and they said it would take. two hours to get a tow truck to me even though AAA was only 20 min away, they would not call AAA. I was at risk of being rear ended. Fire department came and was able to move car to side of road. Rivian gave no assistance. Engine light came on and said call tow truck and do not drive, red lights, manual said it was dangerous.

However, it has not yet been inspected by police or insurance representatives. 5. Yes, the “Limited Performance Mode” message appeared, but according to Rivian’s own system, the vehicle should have still allowed for reduced acceleration. Instead, it lost all power completely, leaving us stranded. Additionally, a defrost system failure warning appeared at the same time, preventing us from defrosting the windshield.

The components that failed are Traction Control, Stability controls, and Anti-Lock Braking while in high regeneration mode. Vehicle can easily become incontrollable in low traction situations (in high regeneration mode) that is a danger to the driver and others on the road. Sequence of Events 1.Vehicle begins to Aquaplane 2.Driver (myself) removes foot from the accelerator pedal (standard technique to regain control) 3.The tires in the front loose more traction and skid due to high regeneration mode. 4.With even less traction the vehicle is out of control In the moment, my first concern and priority was other drivers. I was able avoid six lanes of traffic in the direction of travel without hitting another vehicle before hitting the should barrier. The vehicle felt like there was no ABS (Antilock Braking System) and no traction control. It felt like the vehicle locked all four wheels (like I had placed the vehicle in park). In addition, I had a service scheduled at the end of May 2024 (scheduled in January 2024) for issues with the rain sensor(s). I do not know if these sensor(s) comes into play. It is my belief that there should be a safety warning when using High Regeneration mode and the vehicle should automatically switch back to Low Regeneration mode with each new startup. I have noticed this feature in other electric cars (Audi/BMW) and have begun to understand why these vehicles perform this function. In addition, I have searched the Forum website and have discovered others that have experienced the same issue related to traction in this mode.

The vehicle was parked on a 8 degree slope in the driveway with approximately 2 inches of snow on the drive way. Within thirty minutes of the vehicle being parked the truck slide down the driveway and crashed into the house. The parking brake failed and or is miss-engineered seeing that only two of the wheels were locked and two rolled noting the tire tracks in the snow. The saftey of myself and others could have been much worse if the truck hadn't hit the house and kept rolling down the hill into an adjacent street or house. There is other vehicle reports of this happening on online forums. The vehicle component has not been inspected by the manufacturer. The issue lies with it being an electrical motor and does not have a differential to lock the remaining tires as in an automatic gas powered vehicle. This company has relied on the parking break to only lock the rear wheels for the parking break despite it being an extremely heavy vehicle.

The vehicle brakes stopped working on the highway moving at 75 MPH. It felt like the brakes were locked mechanically after all the vehicle electronic fault codes appeared in the dash. The incident occurred [XXX] traveling down a highway right after a vehicle battery charge at a charging station. While driving, all error lights came on, including turtle mode, high voltage battery pack fault, front collision warning failure, failure in all 4 motors, failure of ABS and traction control, and most importantly failure in brake. Tried pulsating the brake, pressing as hard as possible on the brake pedal, but the brakes would not activate. The pedal was mechanically locked like when you try to turn a steering wheel without a key - that kind of lock. We pulled to the emergency lane and let the vehicle coast to a stop. We did a soft vehicle reset and then a hard vehicle reset. It continued locked. After about 5 minutes, all the error lights went out and vehicle worked again. Drove it home and called Rivian, who had the vehicle towed to their repair facility. While this is the first time the brakes failed, it was not the first time all the error lights came on after a battery charge at a charging station. The first time it happened, i took it to Rivian and they said it was a software glitch and gave it back to me without any repair. If a software glitch can cause your brakes to lock up at highway speeds, this needs to be addressed. This has happened 3 times since December of 2024. I also have a video that i can’t upload, but can provide through email. I can’t trust this vehicle with my life anymore. The vehicle has been in service over 12 times with suspension components replaced multiple times, vehicle error faults that can’t be traced to an issue, and now brake failure. This needs to be thoroughly investigated or someone can get killed. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

On 9/23/23 at approximately 4:10pm, my Rivian R1T suffered a catastrophic failure of the left rear brake. After exiting the freeway, I was slowing for a traffic signal primarily using the regenerative brake feature. I applied light pressure to the brake pedal which initiated a left rear brake failure. I attempted to move the truck out of the traffic lane. The left rear wheel was locked and would not roll. Upon removing the aero cover from the wheel, I observed the brake caliper in an abnormal position. The wheel had a sizeable hole in the middle of it. I surmised that the brake caliper shifted position during braking and damaged the wheel. The vehicle was towed to the Rivian Service Center in Phoenix, Az. A representative at the Service Center has told me that the wheel would not roll because the brake caliper shifted into the center of the wheel preventing it from turning. They have withheld further information about the root cause until they can investigate further. Had this event occurred at higher speeds, I have no doubt it would have caused a loss of control of the vehicle when the wheel locked or perhaps as a result of an inability to slow the vehicle. Rivian is still investigating the root cause of the brake failure. The only warnings received occurred after the event. I was presented with a Parking Brake Service Needed warning, and an indicator that no drive modes could be selected.

The truck was parked on a moderate slope (maybe 10-15 degrees), on a gravel driveway in slightly icy conditions. After 1-2 minutes in "park", the steering wheel began turning and the truck started moving backwards down the slope. It stopped when I pressed on the brakes. I immediately moved the truck to a flatter area. I was able to reproduce this effect multiple times on similar slopes that day. I would put the truck into park. It would be stable and stationary for 1-2 minutes. The steering wheel would then start to turn and the truck would start to move. The front wheels were rolling. I think the back wheels were sliding, but I'm not totally sure. The truck is presently at the Rivian Service Center being inspected. I've attached a photo of the truck on a slope where I could recreate the problem. There was some ice in tire tracks from the day before, but the truck never lost any traction while driving. I have video from the inside of the steering wheel starting to move on one of these occasions.

Can a Rivian R1T tow? Towing & payload

As a pickup, the Rivian R1T is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your R1T's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
