How to read a Suzuki Aerio VIN — every digit explained
Every Suzuki Aerio carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Suzuki and the country it was built in.
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Aerio.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Aerio VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Power Train:manual Transmission
What's wrong. On certain vehicles equipped with 5-speed manual transmissions, due to improper shape of the clip, the retaining clip that keeps the gear shift cable attached to the gear shift lever can contact the gear shift lever housing if excessive lateral force is applied when shifting to first gear.
Risk. Repeated shifting in this manner can eventually cause the retaining clip to break. If the retaining clip breaks, the shift cable can become disconnected from the shift lever, resulting in loss of the ability to change transmission gears.
Fix. Dealers will replace the gear shift cable retaining clip with a clip that has a different shape. The recall began on august 13, 2007. Owners may contact american suzuki at 1-800-934-0934.

My car the brake system and caliper is broken because this right tires take fire. *tr
I purchased my aerio 2005 suzuki dec 2004, in nov 2005 tires worn prematurely on 10,503 mileage, front brakes pads and rotors has to be replaced. I took car to dealership:replaced pads, mashined rotors and aligned/replaced one tire. Month later i come back to dealership with the problem to stop the car on the speed 15ml/h: push the brakes pedal to the floor, car did not stoped. Mechanik drive car, check the brakes and said brakes working fine as it is has to work as abs system, but my car does not has abs system. Sep.2006 i did inspection with change oil service. Result of inspection the same as was in nov 2005: alignment, tires worn out, brake pads and rotors need to be replaced and it is after 7,000 ml i add after the first replacement. Dealership algned and balance, replaced one tire again, about brakes declined, said is not warranty issue. My car has only 18,000 mileage and 100,000 warranty. Brake system is failed and alignment cost the tires primature worn out. *nm
Tl*the contact owns a 2007 suzuki aerio. The contact stated that she has been experiencing brake failure ever since the vehicle was purchased. The brakes have been repaired five times, but always have to be repaired again a couple of months later. The calipers and brake line were listed as the possible causes of the failures. The failure and current mileages were 59,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 suzuki aerio. He front brakes have been changed every 2,000 miles since purchase. The brakes wear down to the metal. This condition causes the calipers to fail. He speculated that the calipers were designed too large for the brake system. A technician from the dealer has not stated that since the vehicle was out of warranty they can not provide any assistance. The current mileage was 32,867. The failure mileage was 5,000.
I bought this car back in feb. 2006 with only 1000 miles on it. By december of 2006, i began hearing squeaky noises and this loud annoying sound, when i took it to the dealership i was told that it needed brake pads already, only adding another 1000 miles within those few months. The brakes are special order and cost me 120.00. I had them put on because the dealership informed me even with my 10 year 100,000 mile warranty, brakes are not covered under it! Well in july 2007, the same noise again, i said no wy it couldn't be the brakes, sure enough again the brakes. In least than 1.5 years i have changed the brakes on this car two times, now my car acts as if the transmission is slipping and i was informed by two mechanics that i need to have a transmission flush because of how black it looks and that is the reason my car is feeling as though it is slipping! I can't understand such a nice car with such a good warranty yet so many problems! *tr
Emergency brake light began coming on randomly from time to time. It then began to come on when i turned left, then began to light up when i used the brakes, then stayed on all the time. My brother and i both own 2006 aerios and both had the same problem at the same time. He took his to the dealership for what we thought would be warranty service. Turns out the brakes had worn out at 18,000 miles! He paid $200 to have his replaced. Being a former mechanic, i decided to sidestep the exorbitant cost of having a dealer replace my brakes planned to do the job myself. Unfortunately, there are no part stores that carry replacement pads for my car. I went to a dealership and was asked to pay $150 just for the pads! Instead, i went to a local tire/brake shop and, in the interest of saving time and ending the runaround, i ended up paying the $200 to have my brake pads replaced at 18,000 miles. *jb
2nd time replacing brakes, 35,000 miles on car, it still is new , 1 year old. Dealership refused to take responsibility, no recall being made. Have already contacted a lawyer in regard to this matter, showing all the other complaints that have been made about the same problem. Suzuki refused to take responsibility. There should be no reason whatsoever that i should be replacing the brakes on my car for a second time in 1 year. What is it going to take for someone from suzuki to get off their backs and do something about this problem? I will never purchase another suzuki again for as long as i live , and i will make sure that anyone i know will not either. *ak
I took the car in to have the brakes checked at about 9,000 miles in may. There was a hot smell and a lot of brake dust around the rim and tires. The suzuki dealer service dept. Said there was no problems just needed brake fluid added. At that time the pads were at half way. But this was dismissed. On august 3rd i began to hear squealing especially when i would put the car in reverse. I took it in to another tire place to have the tire repaired, the men said the brakes sounded bad. There was no indication that there was a brake problem other than the noise. I feel that the brakes feel very tight when i am in reverse almost like the emergency brake is on. I was sent to the dealer since i only had 14,100 miles on the car and it was six months old. The man at the dealership said they would check the history. It was over the 12,000 mile warranty. The service manager later called me to tell me that the brake pads were worn completely on the front and she would order the pads for me. I asked if it would be covered under warranty especially since i had it in at 9,000 miles. I was told no, that brakes wear differently on different cars and basically i was rough on my brakes. There was no offer to investigate, or concede that is was unusual for brakes to wear that quickly. My husband did research on the internet and found many issues with brake problems on the same car. After refusing repeatedly to accept this as my financial responsibility, the service manager was able to get a "one time good will" replacement of my brakes. It has been 12 days and i am still waiting to have the brakes repaired. I feel that there is a problem somewhere in the braking system that leads to the pads being worn down so quickly. I would like to see and investigation into this matter especially after reading so many other similar and more severe complaints. The most common opinion i am finding is that the calipers are too big and too tight on the brake pads. *jb
I bought this vehicle on nov 2, 2005. Two months later the car was out of alignment so i took it to the shop to get that rectified. Exactly 7 days later it was out of alignment again so i took it to the dealership i bought it from and after i explained the situation their response was that this is not covered by the manufacturers warranty. I paid over $50 to get the car aligned again. In june and just today (aug 15, 06) i took it to sears for alignment again. This is the fourth time in 10 months i had to take this car back for alignment. The tires are wearing excessively. The front brakes vibrate at 40 mph and of course, i was told by the dealership that this problem is also not covered by the warranty. Even without even test driving the car. Amazing. To fix it, it will cost me another $160 because the brake pads alone, supposedly cost $120. Let me tell you this, i came back to suzuki because i was the proud owner of a chevy sprint rs 1985 made by suzuki and i had it for 10 year with no problems whatsoever. Maybe that was too much luck but 4 alignments in 10 months is defenitly not the quality i was expecting from suzuki. I will get rid of this car as soon as i can and guess what, i'm passing the word about the aereo's deficiencies to. *jb
I bought my 2005 suzuki aerio a year ago, brand new with only 500 miles on it. In 9 months with only 21,000 miles on it, i have had to replace 3 sets of brakes on the vehicle and a whole new set of tires.

2003 suzuki aerio cv joint keeps coming out due to snap ring in rear end,car is under warranty. Car dealer will not honor warranty, says rear axle is a after market part, this is not true, why would we have car worked on when under warranty, we are third owner of car and know the two previous owners which is a father and son, they are adamant no work has been done on this car, they would have taken the car to get fixed since it is still under warranty, its very easy for the mechanic to get some rear end axle and say it came out of my car ,just to avoid fixing my car, their claim is if someone else worked on this car that voids the warranty, so this is their convenient way of getting out of fixing my car. *tr

Driving home on i-72 westbound from champaign, il. 2003 suzuki aerio had been in cruise control mode at 65mph. Took off cruise to pass a semi trailer. Car engine revved up and down resulting in no power for a moment. Was able to pull back in behind semi, allowing car following me to go around. Lost all power, but was able to pull safely off onto the shoulder just east of the exit ramp to rt 47. Car was towed in to shop in clinton, il. Mechanic looked up technical service bulletin ts 02 06284- m/t left driveshaft pops out of final drive. Car has just over 108,000 miles, so it is out of warranty. This was a potentially fatal situation to have been in. It appears that this is becoming a problem with these models, but no recall has been issued. This has been reported to suzuki via their 800-934-0934 number. Case number is 1-140908504. They stated they are not obligated to cover any costs because the car is out of the 7 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Reason for submitting this compliant- to make nshta aware of a potentially fatal situation with the suzuki aerio. *tr

Purchase car may 13, 2004 had 18,000.00 miles it was a 2003 suzuki aerio. When i purchased the car i noticed a clicking, and clacking noise when you put the car in reverse or make a turn. I was going out of town on june 25, 2004. I took the car to get service on june 23,2004, and to found out what was that clacking, and clicking noise i was hearing. After the mechanic took a look at the car he told me he could hear it to, and that the ball bearing needed work he said he did not have the parts in at the time and would have to order them, and that it would be in tomorrow. I was then told he needed the proper tools to work on it but if i could bring it in that following monday he would then have everything he needed. I informed him i was going out of town that friday, and needed by then. He told me he did not see any problem with me driving the car out of town because i had been driving it, and that it would be find. On our way to sc the car went out of control. It start zig zaging from one lane to the next. It then flip over three times on level gound, and landed on the top the whole front axel from wheel on down was missing from the car. My nephew was thrown out the window had to have emergecy surgery. The driver suffer crack vertabra, and i suffered injury to my eye, head, and glass in skin. My son walked away with cuts, and lacerations to skin. I forgot to mention the mechanic did say there was a recall on that particular part of the car. This car is very dangerous vechicle, and would like for someone to investergate this complaint. 770 478-5751*ak
After i bought my car (in late december 2004), i noticed that the rear-end twitched (very slight swings to the left & right that quickly re-grabbed the road after losing traction). This occurred every time the roads were wet or slippery, and i used it as a signal to slow down. This twitching got worse as the tires wore down, and i had replaced the rear-tires 8 months ago, and got an alignment as well. I was driving southbound on minnesota highway 77, approaching the minnesota river bridge (mile marker 7). A rainstorm had gone by earlier, so the road was wet. I had slowed down, because the car's rear-end was twitching again, and it stopped twitching, and it wasn't twitching around when i got to the bridge. As i crossed the bridge, the rear-end let go, and the car (and i) crashed into the bridges safety median, nose first. The car didn't do any twitching for the 3 minutes prior to getting onto the bridge. As a result of the rear-end letting, the car is totaled, and i was injured. *tr

Had wheel bearings replaced on vehicle at 12,000 miles and again at 30,000 miles. At 42,000 miles axle broke at the wheel. This caused the vehicle to crash and cause $4,400.00 in damage to the front end.
*jb

Front suspension is shot and vehicle is inoperable 1 month after 3-year warranty expired (recommended not safe for travel by service manager). Only 39,000 miles on vehicle. Service requires new complete strut assemblies for both front-left and front-right struts, and 6 new tires over course of three years. *tr
When my vehicle had 11,295 miles on it i had to replace the tires as they had excessive wear. The viscous coupling was replaced and the alignment was changed per my work order as recommended by the ts bulletin 11225. Now my car has 30,000 miles on it and i have to replace my tires again. Obviously there is something wrong with the manufacturing of the vehicle itself as to cause two set of tires to be worn bare after only 30,000 miles. Dealership worked with me on first set, they are unsure about whether they will help with the second set, although the vehicle is still under its 36,000 mile warranty. I am very worried about keeping the vehicle if i will have to get new tires every 10-20,000 miles and the car manufacturer is not willing to fix the vehicles. I do not feel safe driving my vehicle knowing that the tires are wearing down excessively and no one seems to know the cause. *nm
Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's front end vibrated and pulled to the left at various speeds, although the problem was more noticeable while driving 55 mph. The problem may have caused the bald spot of the outside of the front tire. The service dealer and manufacturer were notified.

I own a 2004 suzuki aerio awd. The car seemed on the brink of hydroplaning at low rates of speed. At 14,000 miles the rear tires were completely bald and i purchased 4 new tires. The dealership attributed this to lack of rotation. Local tire shops stated this is a common problem with this model car. A full alignment was performed and regular rotation recommended. I had the car aligned and tires rotated every 5,00 miles. Again, i purchased 4 new tires at 42,000 miles after sliding off the road at a low rate of speed (less than 10 mph) and into a curb. The conditions were slippery and snowy. At 50,000 miles, i had my car inspected and a tire is starting to wear on the outside rim at an unusual rate. This compromises the belt and traction of the tires. This car is a major hazard because it may not even able to go 12 months between inspections or 3 months between oil changes without tires going bald or blowing out. There has to be a design flaw causing the tires to wear at unusually high rates: either the tire size or surrounding structures. I contacted the manufacturer and they were not able to provide a solution. I would have purchased a safer car but cannot financially do so at this time. The car has not had any other problems accept a few cosmetic issues. Please review this claim. *tr
My rear alignment is off so in october of 2005 i took it in to get fixed as my rear tires appeared to be wearing at an unusual rate and pattern. Problem was said to be in some suzuki aerio's but was said to be fixed. The specs were off and had to be reset and rear tires warranted. On january 5th i took car in to get oil changed and rotation of tires. They would not rotate as back tires were worn and they told me to take it back where i got it fixed the previous time. On january 20th rear alignment fixed again and this time they had to bend something (a strut ?) in order to get the specs right on the car. I went off the road when i returned home and went into a ditch. No damage. Then on january 31th new tires put on the front and old ones rotated to the back. The old ones were from october and were in excellent condition per suzuki dealership. The tires are again worn to the point of unsafe. I can not drive on dry roads without having a problem. This has become a safety defect and the only way to correct it is for me to buy new tires every month. The tires worn down completely from excellent to should not be driving on them in 2,000 miles and just over a month. *jb

Yokahama told owner that the 2005 suzuki aereo has problems with excessive rear tire wear. A vin check, which confirms there is a bulletin on this, but suzuki avoiding this issue and blaming owner! Suzuki also ignoring problem with dealer in tallhassee not performing tire rotation, and blaming owner! Awaiting call from regional mgr but were told that he will support district mgr. Owner also told to drive treadless car 10 hours to tallahassee to take matter up with that dealer. Why isn't suzuki getting involved with this? National suzuki customer service not advocating for owner, only protecting suzuki. The car is going back to miami dealership today 7/18/06 for futher inspection which was only offered after owner refused to leave until treated fairly. About 1-1-1/2 months ago a squeal developed on the right side of the engine of our 2006 suzuki - currently at 29,000+ miles. My husband took the vehicle to the dealer who sold us the car and an examination was done. The mechanic said the serpentine belt was glazed and that it was not under warranty. He said the belt could be tightened by removing a panel. If it was the pulley that was defective it would be replaced and we could buy the belts at that time from the dealer for replacement. He indicated to my husband that it would be about $155-$165 to have the belts replaced. When asked what other customers did, he said they had the belts replaced or they just "lived with" the squealing. I have frankly never had a car that has had belt issues, and clearly this has happened to other customers, so young in the mileage life of my vehicle. *tr
