The median asking price for a used GMC Yukon XL is $14,995 across 760 listings. A 2024 costs about $69,939; a 2001 about $3,600. But the same year can differ wildly: among 2005 cars the dearest asks 6.5 times what the cheapest does — condition, mileage and title do the rest.
What each model year costs
Three numbers per year: the cheap end, the middle and the dear end. The gap between them is the useful part — it tells you whether the year has a clear market price or whether condition decides everything.
| Year | Cheap end | Median | Dear end | Spread | Typical mileage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | $54,995 | $74,588 | 1.4× | 43,038 mi | |
| 2023 | $29,499 | $59,750 | 2× | 103,389 mi | |
| 2022 | $35,099 | $49,994 | 1.4× | 82,834 mi | |
| 2021 | $36,997 | $50,250 | 1.4× | 83,352 mi | |
| 2020 | $17,999 | $37,481 | 2.1× | 118,338 mi | |
| 2019 | $18,400 | $36,808 | 2× | 121,196 mi | |
| 2018 | $9,499 | $31,995 | 3.4× | 141,893 mi | |
| 2017 | $12,000 | $22,985 | 1.9× | 154,425 mi | |
| 2016 | $11,995 | $25,900 | 2.2× | 138,472 mi | |
| 2015 | $7,995 | $24,431 | 3.1× | 159,629 mi | |
| 2014 | $5,700 | $16,799 | 2.9× | 176,025 mi | |
| 2013 | $3,500 | $12,900 | 3.7× | 201,353 mi | |
| 2012 | $6,500 | $13,999 | 2.2× | 150,630 mi | |
| 2011 | $4,400 | $24,900 | 5.7× | 144,693 mi | |
| 2010 | $5,450 | $10,995 | 2× | 192,441 mi | |
| 2009 | $2,000 | $10,500 | 5.3× | 169,538 mi | |
| 2008 | $3,000 | $10,800 | 3.6× | 258,292 mi | |
| 2007 | $3,800 | $8,999 | 2.4× | 177,614 mi | |
| 2005 | $1,995 | $12,950 | 6.5× | 164,953 mi | |
| 2004 | $2,100 | $6,000 | 2.9× | 206,373 mi | |
| 2003 | $2,350 | $5,300 | 2.3× | 224,159 mi | |
| 2002 | $1,999 | $5,000 | 2.5× | 218,457 mi | |
| 2001 | $2,500 | $5,500 | 2.2× | 232,818 mi |
A spread near 1.5× means the market agrees what the car is worth. Past 3× it usually means the sample mixes tidy examples with tired ones — and that a careful buyer can do well.
Dealer or private seller
Both figures are measured against the median for the same model year, so age is taken out of the comparison — this is the forecourt markup on its own.
| Seller | Listings | vs median year | Average asked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dealer | 416 | +12.2% | $22,693 |
| Private seller | 150 | -9.6% | $11,195 |
The gap comes to 21.8 percentage points. Some of that buys something real — reconditioning, a warranty, paperwork handled. The rest is the cost of not looking further.
How fast price falls with mileage
Taken from a single model year — 2019, the one with the most listings — so the curve shows mileage alone rather than age creeping in alongside it.
| Mileage | Average asked | Listings |
|---|---|---|
| 75–100k miles | 26 | |
| 100–125k miles | 13 | |
| 125–150k miles | 11 | |
| 150–175k miles | 17 |
Between the lowest and highest mileage bands the asking price falls 43%. Most of that drop happens early: the first hundred thousand miles cost far more than the second.
Which options hold value
Same normalisation: each figure is the average premium or discount against the median of its own model year.
| Option | Listings | vs median year | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drivetrain | Four-wheel drive | 401 | +9.0% |
| Drivetrain | Rear-wheel drive | 42 | -19.1% |
Where it's cheaper
States where this car asks least and most, measured against the national median for each model year. Worth knowing before a long drive: a fifteen-percent gap on a twenty-thousand-dollar car is three thousand.
| State | Listings | vs national median |
|---|---|---|
| GA | 19 | |
| FL | 28 | |
| OH | 23 | |
| TX | 63 | |
| CO | 42 | |
| MN | 37 | |
| WA | 58 | |
| OR | 46 | |
| CA | 141 | |
| WI | 26 |
Only states with enough listings to mean something are shown. Rust-belt winters, local demand and how many were sold there originally all pull these numbers around.
Asking prices are the market. What is that car worth?
- Exact value for one VIN, adjusted for its mileage
- Live listings with prices, not just percentiles
- Price-drop alerts on the model you are watching
- Full research report as a PDF you can hand to a mechanic
- No ads, on every page
- No ads, no tracking — and much more
How we count
Every figure comes from live classified listings — asking prices, not sale prices. Sellers ask more than they get, so treat these as the top of the range, not the bottom.
Why the percentages, and not plain averages. This is the part worth explaining, because getting it wrong produces confident nonsense. Take a naive average price per state and you learn that this car costs four times more in Alabama than Indiana — which is false. What actually happened is that Indiana's listings were older cars. Do the same by title and you get the absurd result that rebuilt cars sell for more than clean ones, because the rebuilt ones in the sample happened to be newer.
So we never average prices across a slice. Each listing is first converted into its ratio against the median for its own model year, and those ratios are averaged instead. «Fifteen percent below median» then means what it says, and holds up whichever years the slice happens to contain.
Slices with too few listings are dropped rather than shown with a wide error bar — a percentage built on eight cars is decoration, not data.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a used GMC Yukon XL cost?
The median asking price is $14,995 across 760 live listings, ranging from about $3,600 for a 2001 to $69,939 for a 2024. These are asking prices — sellers generally accept less.
Is it cheaper to buy a Yukon XL from a private seller?
Yes, by roughly 22 percentage points. Dealers ask +12.2% against the median for the same model year, private sellers -9.6%. Part of that gap pays for reconditioning and a warranty; the rest is the price of convenience.
Where is the cheapest place to buy a Yukon XL?
Of the states with enough listings, GA asks least at -21.4% against the national median, and WI most at +23.7%. On a $20,000 car that spread is worth a long drive.
Why do prices for the same year vary so much?
Among 2005 cars the dearest asks 6.5× what the cheapest does. Mileage, service history and title status explain most of it — which is why an average price for an older car tells you very little on its own.
