A low average age does not automatically mean a fragile car: a brand with a young fleet on the road will always skew early. Read it next to the share reported inside three years.

2022 Lucid AIR · crash

On July 21, I was stopped behind another vehicle. Using 1 pedal driving with no roll feature. There was front camera error message as well as traction control warning light on. My car started to move forward on it's own so I inadvertently hit the acceleration initially before I stepped on the brakes - car did not stop initially and I rear ended the stopped car in front of me. Lucid kept my car for a week reviewing the logs and concluded there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and the incident was driver caused. I have never stomped on the go pedal from a standing stop before. The car moved forward on it's own before I inadvertently stepped on the accelerator pedal

Myself and numerous other Lucid Air drivers of all different trim levels are unable to reliably shift out of park and into drive or reverse when entering our cars. This problem has gotten worse with a recent software update and Lucid seems to be acting slowly to fix it. It is a very dangerous thing to have a car that cannot be moved into drive or reverse when needed. Moving the stalk up or down does nothing. Sometimes in 10 to 20 seconds, or sometimes after a few minutes the car will full “turn on” and say “ready” and allow us to finally leave park and go to drive or reverse. This is insane. People can die

The recent software update v2.5.0 has been very unstable. The screens would often black out every 30 seconds and calls get cut off. But the biggest problem was it resetting profile while driving on the highway! Theres no way to fix it and we had to pull over on the side to switch profiles again to fix the seat. We called them and lucid has yet to call us back. This is a safety issue

The car's phone connectivity is always an issue. The car locks when the phone is right next to it, for example, if you put kids or groceries in the back seat then it locks before you get to the front door. This is very annoying, but what makes it a safety issue is that when the door locks, the kids are unable to open it. This has happened multiple times, leaving my kids panicked and trapped. I looked into it online and there are entire reddit threads about it, with the solution being that you just have to push really hard, but this is not possible for kids! It also happened the other day when I let my [XXX] daughter take my phone to get something from the car, and the car forgot the phone connection and locked her inside and again, she was unable to open the door. Thankfully I was just a minute behind her. [XXX] / [XXX] [XXX]INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

Ranking by volume says more about how many cars a brand sells than about how they hold up. Age at failure is the fairer of the two.

How we count

Every figure here comes from complaints owners filed with NHTSA — 1,100,006 of them, covering 1,982 models built between 1981 and 2026.

A complaint is an unverified report: someone wrote down what happened to their car. It is not a confirmed defect and not a recall. What makes the volume useful is the pattern — when thousands of owners of the same build describe the same failure, that is a signal no marketing brochure will give you.

Two things we do that the source does not. First, we compute the age of the car at the moment of failure from the incident date and the model year. Second, we group complaints by the first 11 characters of the VIN — the production series — so a bad plant run does not disappear into a model-wide average.
