Checking a Land Rover VIN free gives you recalls, owner complaints and safety records straight from NHTSA. Across the marque that is 2,019 complaints on 1,165 production runs, 4.8% of which involved a crash against 5.8% for the market as a whole.
Why a VIN tells you more than a model name
Every recall lookup you will find online works at model level: «this model had a recall». That is the coarsest possible answer. The first eleven characters of a VIN pin down the plant, the model year, the body and the engine — a single production run, often a few thousand cars.
It matters because faults are not spread evenly. Across Land Rover the average run collects 1.7 complaints, but the distribution has a long tail: a handful of runs carry dozens while most carry one or two. Pick a model below to see where its tail sits.
Land Rover models — where the reports concentrate
Sorted by complaints per production run. Sorting by raw totals would just rank the models by how many were sold; this ranks them by how often owners of a given build ended up filing.
| Model | Per run | Complaints | Runs | Crash-related |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Land Rover Freelander | 343 | 108 | 1.5% | |
| Land Rover LR2 | 161 | 93 | 1.9% | |
| Land Rover LR3 | 144 | 87 | 2.1% | |
| Land Rover Range Rover Sport | 298 | 187 | 4.4% | |
| Land Rover Discovery | 265 | 181 | 12.8% | |
| Land Rover Range Rover | 503 | 334 | 5% | |
| Land Rover LR4 | 35 | 25 | 5.7% | |
| Land Rover Discovery Sport | 42 | 32 | 4.8% | |
| Land Rover Defender | 52 | 42 | 1.9% | |
| Land Rover Range Rover Evoque | 21 | 18 | 0% | |
| Land Rover Range Rover Velar | 102 | 82 | 5.9% |
How serious were they
A complaint count on its own is a weak signal — a rattling trim panel and a stalling engine both count as one. NHTSA records flag whether an incident involved a crash, a fire or an injury, and that is what separates annoyance from danger.
| Outcome | Land Rover | All vehicles |
|---|---|---|
| Complaints filed | 2,019 | 1,100,006 |
| Involved a crash | 97 (4.8%) | 63,552 (5.8%) |
| Involved a fire | 65 (3.2%) | 26,727 (2.4%) |
| Injuries reported | 100 | 57,362 |
| Deaths reported | 3 | 2,711 |
Severity tracks close to the all-vehicle average — the mix of trivial and serious reports is unremarkable.

How this check works
We hold 1,100,006 complaints filed with NHTSA between 1981 and 2026, covering 295,326 production runs. Each record carries the reporter's VIN prefix, the systems involved and whether the incident produced a crash, a fire or an injury.
Grouping by that prefix is the whole point. A model-level count blends a good year with a bad one and a Kentucky plant with a Mexican one; the prefix keeps them apart. We publish the eleven characters in full — they identify a batch, not a car, since the six-digit serial number that names the individual vehicle is not part of them.
What this check does not cover: title brands, odometer records, auction history and insurance write-offs. Those live in DMV and insurer databases, not in NHTSA's, and no free tool has them.

Frequently asked questions
How do I check a Land Rover VIN for free?
Enter the 17 characters above. We look up its production run against 2,019 NHTSA complaint records for Land Rover vehicles and return recalls, reported faults and severity. Free, no signup.
What does a Land Rover VIN tell you?
Characters 1–3 identify the manufacturer and country, 4–8 the model, body and engine, 10 the model year and 11 the assembly plant. Together the first eleven pin down one production run — which is what makes a per-run comparison possible.
Which Land Rover model has the most complaints?
Per production run, the Freelander leads at 3.2 complaints per run. The full table above ranks every Land Rover model this way.
Does a free check cover accident history?
No. Crash and title records live with state DMVs and insurers. What is free and federal is the recall and complaint data you see here — and unlike a paid report, it is matched to the exact build rather than to the model name.
