Which build runs owners report most

Characters 1–11 of a VIN identify the production run — plant, model year, body and engine. Everything after that is just the serial number of the individual car. So two Town Cars from the same year can belong to different runs, and the records below show those runs are nothing like each other.

Which model years to check twice

Ranked by complaints per production run, not by raw count. A raw count only tells you which year sold well — a high-volume year always looks worse. Dividing by the number of runs strips the sales figures out and leaves the actual fault rate.

Heaviest year here is 1992 at 5.1 complaints per run; lightest is 2011 at 1.2. Recent years always look thin — complaints accumulate for a decade after a car is sold, so a 2024 build has barely started.

What to inspect on this car

The systems owners report most. Take this list to the pre-purchase inspection — a mechanic given specific parts to check finds more than one told to «look it over».

Open recalls to verify

A recall is free to fix at any franchised dealer, for the life of the car, whoever owns it now. But the work only happens if someone books it — and a used car that changed hands may never have been brought in. Check each campaign below against your VIN.

The digits in a campaign number carry the year it was opened — «09V419000» means 2009. Compare that with the model years affected and you can see how long the fault ran before anyone acted on it.

How serious were they

A complaint count on its own is a weak signal — a rattling trim panel and a stalling engine both count as one. NHTSA records flag whether an incident involved a crash, a fire or an injury, and that is what separates annoyance from danger.

Crash-related reports run 41% above the all-vehicle rate. That does not make the car unsafe on its own — but it does mean the faults owners report here tend to be the kind that end in an accident, not a squeak.

How this check works

We hold 1,100,006 complaints filed with NHTSA between 1981 and 2026, covering 295,326 production runs. Each record carries the reporter's VIN prefix, the systems involved and whether the incident produced a crash, a fire or an injury.

Grouping by that prefix is the whole point. A model-level count blends a good year with a bad one and a Kentucky plant with a Mexican one; the prefix keeps them apart. We publish the eleven characters in full — they identify a batch, not a car, since the six-digit serial number that names the individual vehicle is not part of them.

What this check does not cover: title brands, odometer records, auction history and insurance write-offs. Those live in DMV and insurer databases, not in NHTSA's, and no free tool has them.
