1,569 complaints filed with NHTSA use the words "death wobble". 1,022 of them, two in three, are about a Jeep Wrangler.
Owners describe it the same way every time. The vehicle hits a bump at 40 to 60 mph, and a violent side-to-side shake starts in the front wheels and comes up through the steering. It only stops once the vehicle has slowed almost to walking pace. 48% of these complaints mention a highway.
| Vehicle | Complaints using the phrase | Per 1,000 complaints about the model |
|---|---|---|
| Jeep Wrangler | 1,022 | 72 |
| Ford F-250 | 139 | 43 |
| Jeep Gladiator | 86 | 88 |
| Ford F-350 | 77 | 37 |
| RAM 2500 and 3500 | 63 | 8 |
| Jeep Grand Cherokee | 45 | 2 |
| Jeep Cherokee | 37 | 3 |
By rate, the Gladiator, the pickup built on the Wrangler, is worse still. Almost one Gladiator complaint in eleven describes a death wobble.
The list is short and it isn't random. Almost every vehicle on it has a solid front axle: the Wrangler and Gladiator, the Super Duty Fords, heavy-duty RAMs and older Jeeps. A solid axle carries both front wheels on one beam. When a worn joint or a loose track bar lets one wheel start to oscillate, the beam passes the movement to the other.
Which Wranglers
| Wrangler model year | Death wobble complaints |
|---|---|
| 2007 (first year of the JK) | 79 |
| 2008 | 81 |
| 2012 to 2017, combined | 49 |
| 2018 (first year of the JL) | 255 |
| 2019 | 83 |
| 2020 | 37 |
| 2021 | 152 |
| 2022 | 51 |
| 2023 | 36 |
The worst single year is the 2018, the first year of the current JL generation, with 255 complaints. The first two years of the previous JK generation are the next cluster in the older cars. In between, the 2012 to 2017 Wranglers together generated only 49.
That fits the idea that a new design takes time to sort out. Across hundreds of models, the first model year is no worse than later ones, but the Wrangler is one of the clearer exceptions. The 2021, with 152 complaints, shows the pattern isn't only about launch years.
It hasn't gone away
By filing date, complaints peaked in 2019 at 184. They fell to 80 in 2021, then climbed back to 160 in 2023, and 2025 still brought 102. Most of the recent ones concern 2018 to 2023 Wranglers and Gladiators.
A new-car problem, not just a worn-out one
The phrase suggests a tired, high-mileage truck. The data says otherwise. Where owners gave a mileage, the median is 23,000 miles and a quarter of complaints come before 10,000. The typical vehicle was three years old.
Repairs often don't hold. One complaint in five says parts were replaced, and almost as many say the shake came back. The median quoted repair is $743, often a new steering damper. A damper calms the symptom but doesn't fix the joint that causes it.
How dangerous it is
Less than it feels. 1.1% of these complaints involve a crash, against 5.75% across all complaints, because the instinctive reaction is also the cure: brake gently and slow down. Sixteen injuries are recorded.
Buying a used Wrangler or Super Duty
Drive it at 45 to 60 mph over expansion joints or broken pavement, since that is the trigger. Underneath, check the track bar, its bushings and bracket bolts, the tie rod ends and the ball joints. A lift kit or oversized tires are a reason to look harder. Ask whether the steering damper was replaced recently, because a fresh damper can hide the problem on a test drive.
The full Wrangler complaint record breaks steering and suspension down by year, and a VIN check shows any recall still open on the vehicle you are looking at.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Jeep death wobble?
A violent oscillation of the front wheels and steering, usually set off by a bump at 40 to 60 mph, that continues until the vehicle slows right down. It affects vehicles with a solid front axle, where worn or loose steering and suspension joints let one wheel's movement spread to the other.
Which Jeep Wrangler years have the most death wobble complaints?
The 2018 Wrangler, the first year of the JL generation, with 255 complaints, followed by the 2021 with 152. Among older Wranglers, the 2007 and 2008 lead with 79 and 81. The 2012 to 2017 models together have 49.
Is the death wobble dangerous?
It is frightening but rarely ends in a crash: 1.1% of these complaints involve a collision against 5.75% across all complaints, because slowing down stops it. Lasting repairs usually mean fixing the track bar, tie rod ends or ball joints, not just replacing the steering damper.
