Our decoder is free and takes no signup, so I assumed the usage pattern would be simple: one person, one car, one lookup. Then I actually counted. 430,409 lookups have gone through it, spread across 28,797 unique VINs. That's an average of fifteen checks per car.

The curve is a decision, not a habit

Just under a third of VINs get looked up once and never again. Those are the easy ones — the car was obviously wrong, or obviously right, and the buyer moved on.
Everything after that is someone thinking. Two checks, four checks, six. The same seventeen characters, the same recall list, the same build record, pulled up again days apart.
What people are actually doing
I can't see individual sessions, but the shape is familiar to anyone who has bought a used car. You find the listing on your phone at lunch and check it. You show the results to whoever you live with, and check it again on the laptop. You sleep on it. You drive out to see the car, and standing in the seller's driveway you pull the number up one more time — because you want to be sure the VIN on the dashboard matches the one in the ad.
That last one is worth doing, by the way. It costs nothing and it catches a specific kind of fraud: an honest listing with someone else's clean VIN pasted into it.
The heavy repeats are a different story. A car checked ten or fifteen times isn't being considered — it's being argued about. Somebody wants it and somebody else doesn't, and the report is being used as evidence by both sides.
Why this matters more than it looks
Every industry report describes a used-car purchase as a funnel — search, shortlist, inspect, buy. Our logs describe something messier: a loop. People do not gather information and then decide. They decide, get nervous, re-check, decide again.
Which is why the useful thing a VIN report can do isn't dumping more data on you. It's answering the specific question you came back for. That's why we split ours: the free VIN decoder tells you what the car is — year, engine, plant, trim — and the VIN check tells you what's happened to it: open recalls, title brands, reported history.
If you're on your fourth lookup of the same car, the answer probably isn't in the decode. It's in the history — or in the fact that you keep checking, which is its own kind of answer.
One number I had to throw out
The maximum in the dataset is 9,497 lookups on a single VIN. That's not a shopper, that's a script or a demo number, and I excluded it from the average before writing any of this down. The fifteen figure holds without it.
Worth knowing what a normal count looks like, though: if you've checked a car more than five or six times, you're in the top 15% of indecision in our entire dataset. Take that however you like — but at that point the missing information usually isn't online. It's under the car, and it costs about a hundred dollars to have a mechanic look at it.
