Every recall in a vehicle report looks the same: a campaign number, a component, a description. But the component field for 1,383 of them reads EQUIPMENT: OTHER: LABELS.

That's 3.0% of all recalls ever issued, and it means the defect is a printed sticker.

What these campaigns actually are

A tyre pressure placard showing the wrong figure. A weight rating plate with a transposed number. A missing warning label on a jack. A certification sticker that omits a required line.

They are genuine federal safety recalls — the labels are legally mandated and carry information a driver may act on. A wrong pressure placard can leave someone running incorrect tyre pressures for years.

But the remedy is a technician handing you a new sticker, and the risk is nothing like a fuel line or an inflator.

Why Toyota tops the list

Volume and process, not carelessness. Toyota sells enormous numbers across many variants, each with its own placard specifications, and it self-reports diligently. A manufacturer that catches its own labelling errors and files them properly accumulates more of these than one that doesn't look.

Peterbilt at 234 reflects the same thing in commercial trucks, where weight and capacity plates are heavily regulated and configurations are endless.

There are also 317 further campaigns about errors in the owner's manual.

Why this matters when you read a report

This is the practical problem: a vehicle history report lists open campaigns without ranking them. Five open recalls might be one airbag inflator and four labels, or it might be five fuel system defects. The count is identical.

We saw exactly this when we checked cars our own readers own — the second most common open campaign across 105 vehicles was a label, found on 26 of them.

How to read the list properly

Read components, not totals. Airbags, fuel system, brakes, steering, electrical — those change how you feel about a car. Labels and owner's manuals don't.

Don't dismiss them either. They're free to fix and take minutes. There's no reason to leave one open, and a dealer will hand you the sticker.

Don't let a high count scare you off a good car. We found one model year with 38 separate campaigns — the number alone says very little without the breakdown.
