Cars Built Between 2000 and 2006 Generated More Complaints Than Any Era Before or Since

Reliability is supposed to improve steadily. Plotting owner complaints per model against the year the car was built produces a hump in the middle that doesn't belong there.

The whole early 2000s, not one bad year

Six of the worst years are 2000 through 2006, sitting between 61 and 65 complaints per model. It's a plateau rather than a spike, which rules out a single scandal explaining it.

What was happening in those cars

Electronics arrived before anyone was good at them. This is the period when engine management, body control modules, electronic throttles and early infotainment became standard. Electrical complaints rose from 6.1% of all complaints in the nineties to 14.9% in the 2000s — the crossover point where cars stopped being mechanical problems and started being electrical ones.

Transmissions got complicated. Five and six-speed automatics with electronic control replaced simpler four-speeds, and early implementations were not durable.

Cost pressure was intense. American manufacturers in particular were cutting supplier costs hard in the years leading into the 2009 collapse, and the results show up in the complaint record.

Why newer cars look better — and partly aren't

Recent model years show fewer complaints per model, but some of that is age rather than quality. Complaints accumulate over a vehicle's life: a two-year-old car generates 7 per model year and a twelve-year-old one generates 43. A 2022 car hasn't had time to collect its share.

The early-2000s cars have had two decades. But so have the nineties cars, and those sit clearly lower — which is what makes the hump real rather than an artefact.

What this means if you're shopping

Sub-$8,000 territory is mostly this era. The cheapest third of the market averages 16.5 years old, which lands squarely on the peak. The bargain segment and the problem segment are the same segment.

Check the specific model, not the era. The average is a distribution — plenty of 2004 cars are fine and some are dreadful. We found complaints concentrate heavily, with the top 1% of model years holding 15% of all complaints.

Electrical faults are the era's signature. On a car from these years, test every switch, window, light and module rather than focusing on the engine.

Check what's still open. Cars this age are on their fourth or fifth owner and recall letters stopped arriving long ago. A VIN check shows what was never repaired — free at any age.
