How to read a Alfa Romeo Stelvio VIN — every digit explained

Every Alfa Romeo Stelvio carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Stelvio.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Stelvio VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

A corroded faulty ground strap under the car, which is connected to the transmission caused the engine wiring harness to overload a smaller ground wire in the wheel well, then continued to melt other sections of the main engine wiring harness when trying to start the car. This is only a $200 part, but caused $6k+ of damages calling for a labor intensive job of replacing the entire engine wiring harness. The manufacturer does not provide any information on this to the owner as a maintenance issue or something to keep an eye on to prevent this issue. It's obviously a defect.

2018 Stelvio

After fueling up the fuel tank, the vehicle was driven on the highway and smoke began to emit out from the vehicle's hood. The driver was not alerted there was any issue from the vehicle's dashboard indicator/warning lights. the vehicle has developed the exact symptoms described in the recall, including: Loss of power Check Engine Light Excessive oil consumption Electronic throttle control warnings / drivability issues My authorized dealer has confirmed that the recall is open but states parts are not available. This leaves me with an unsafe and unreliable vehicle.

The engine cooling hose is failing and may be made of similar materials under the same recall as the Stelvio Qudrofiligo NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 18V635000. Mine has a leak which can cause a loss of coolant and cause a crash. The engine cooling hose may have inadequate webbing material allowing a coolant leak.

2019 Stelvio

While driving on a highway around 3 am in dark environment, going at 63mph, the vehicle completely shut off in less than 1 second with no warning at all. Brakes failed, steering failed, engine shut off, all gauges including speedometer and tachometer stopped functioning, all electrical related functions failed, headlight and taillight shut off, unable to turn on hazard light. Right after the complete failure, i tried to restart the vehicle on the highway while still in motion but the vehicle was completely unresponsive. The vehicle is barely steerable with the steering assist fail and had to switch from the left lane to the right lane with no turn signals on, and had to coast to a highway exit because of the brakes and engine failure. After stopping at the exit, i was unable to turn on the hazards light and all doors are locked except the driver side door, then i called roadside assist for help, the vehicle was then towed away.

2018 Stelvio

I own a 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio (VIN: [XXX] ) with approximately 102,000 miles. The vehicle recently experienced an electrical issue caused by a failed ground strap — a known problem in these vehicles that is widely reported by other owners. After the vehicle became inoperable, I observed smoke and visible signs of burned or heat-damaged wiring in multiple areas under the hood, including ground wires not located near the main strap and crumbling insulation on the ABS wiring in the front wheel wells. The vehicle was towed to an authorized Alfa Romeo dealership, where the ground strap was replaced. However, the dealer did not inspect or document the other visibly damaged wiring, despite my specific request and description of the safety issue. They claimed the vehicle showed no error codes and was safe to drive. My concern is that the failed ground strap caused additional electrical damage to safety-critical components like the ABS system, which may result in electrical fire, loss of braking, or other failures. Alfa Romeo appears to have updated the design of the replacement ground strap (now rubber-insulated), which suggests they are aware of the issue, but they have not issued a recall or TSB. I am filing this report to document the issue and request that NHTSA investigate. I believe this is a systemic problem that affects vehicle safety, and that Alfa Romeo and its dealerships are failing to address it adequately. Ground wire to starter had corroded and broke into. Wife tried to start the vehicle and saw smoke coming up out of the hood. This caused the main wiring harness to burn and wires to fall apart. The wires run from the front wheels up into the engine bay and throughout vehicle. The vehicle could have caught fire or could have possibly caused the brakes to fail while driving. I contacted Alfa Cares but they would not help cover cost (estimated approximately $9,000). This is not only a safety issue but a non maintenance for the customer issue. This isn’t a scheduled maintenance and is a product failure by the manufacturer. This issue should be a recall for both issues. This also caused all warning lights to come on the dash including steering, ABS, and about four other warning lights. Please consider this issue as a recall as Alfa doesn’t seem to care enough to take care of it and before someone gets hurt. The issue has been noted by an independent repair shop as well as an Alfa Romeo certified mechanic.

The rearview camera system stopped functioning on about 2/29/2024. At around the same time, the front proximity sensor began to intermittently falsely indicate an object in the vehicle's path when there is no object, including when the vehicle is traveling at speed in the roadway with no other vehicles around. To date, this has not caused the vehicle to brake improperly. We purchased the car approximately three months ago. It is still under the manufacturer's original warranty. Note, the rear camera has been required by law since May 2018. The vehicle has a service appointment scheduled to resolve the problems. We anticipate that the camera issue and front proximity sensor problem will be resolved under warranty; however, the purpose of this complaint was to document the onset of the issues should the manufacturer fail their legal obligations under applicable state and federal laws. Thank you for your assistance.

The battery shuts off the main screen making it difficult to navigate. The battery doesn't get charged adequately and that affects the electronic displays. This flaw could affect GPS, navigation as well as other essential electronic components.

2020 Stelvio

The gear shifter broke. The button on the back that you compress in order to trigger a button inside of the shifter, broke off and then the button inside got stuck. I was not able to shift gears and even though there was no other issue with the vehicle, I was stuck in a parking lot blocking other people's ability to move around me. It creates a safety hazard by not being able to shift gears to move the vehicle out of harm's way or even to be able to be towed in a safe manner. The tow truck driver had to climb under my vehicle and find a way to put the vehicle into neutral because the gear shifter would not engage. No to the other questions. I sat for six hours waiting for a tow truck to come because the first one that was dispatched was not able to help due to the specific circumstances. From reading other online forums, this does seem to be a recurring issue with Alfa Romeo's.

2019 Stelvio

My car stopped and would not turn back on while in the middle lane of a busy highway. We were stopped on the highway >20min until police arrived to block the lanes so we could safely exit the vehicle and a tow truck could safely retrieve it. The ground strap underneath the vehicle that grounds the main engine harness was broken. As a result the electrical short resulted in burning/melting of several spots on the harness. There was no warning ahead of time and I’ve learned that this is a known issue. We are very lucky that this did not lead to a crash, injury or death.

Despite the seriousness of the outstanding recall (25V-586), which Stellantis acknowledges can result in a sudden and complete loss of engine power at high speeds, Alfa Romeo/Stellantis have provided exactly zero updates in nearly 8 months since the recall was announced. In speaking with my dealer, I’ve learned that Alfa Romeo/Stellantis were initially providing vague estimates for when they expected a recall fix to be available but have since stopped providing information to the dealers altogether. The manufacturer’s behavior in the face of such a serious safety risk is alarming and leads me to question whether a fix is actually even under development or will ever be available. Without action or the threat of action by the government to force the manufacturer to comply with their obligations to vehicle owners I have no confidence that this serious safety issue will be satisfactorily addressed at all, much less in a timely manner.

I received Safety Recall 25V-586 regarding the fuel pump defect on my 2019 Alfa Romeo Stelvio. The notice states that the vehicle can lose drive power without warning, which could lead to a crash. However, the letter also says that the remedy for this condition is not currently available. I am extremely concerned for my safety because I rely on this vehicle for daily driving, and I do not feel it is safe to operate a car that could suddenly lose power at any time. The manufacturer has acknowledged the risk, but no repair or interim solution has been provided. I have also noticed occasional hesitation and reduced power while driving, which makes me worry that the issue may already be occurring. I am requesting that NHTSA review this issue and require Alfa Romeo to provide an immediate remedy, loaner vehicle, or buyback for affected owners until the fix becomes available. This situation places drivers and passengers at serious risk.

NHTSA safety recall 25V-586 was issued on September 9, 2025. It has now been eight months without a resolution from the manufacturer, and per the FCA recall notice (accessed at [XXX] ) "The Fuel Delivery Module (FDM) on your vehicle may contain internal parts that can be affected by heat, which can reduce fuel flow and lead to a loss of drive power while driving. A loss of drive power can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning." This is a critical safety issue and the lengthy delay in providing a remedy puts lives at risk.

Please be advised that Alfa Romeo vehicles are experiencing a very large number of gear shift selecting buttons that "POP OFF" during driving and while parked and can't be driven or moved!!! This is a know reported and COMMON ISSUE according to the ALFA ROMEO SERVICE MANAGER but not a reported recall issue!!! This is unsafe and very dangerous and should be considered a recall safety issue by the manufacture, owners and public immediately!!! This small piece of equipment that just unexpectedly "POPS OFF" can cause serious injury! 2020 ALFA ROMEO STELVIO - Miles: 69866

When leaving to go to work, I pressed the button on the gear shift to put the car into reverse and then drive. I heard something click into the cupholders as I drove. It was the gear shift button. The plastic actuator button fell off completely. It would not fit back in. I think the plastic broke. I continued to drive to work, but when I got to work, I could not put the car into reverse. I was able to pull into a space, and put it in Park (which is a different button on top of the gear shift). When I returned to my car, it was impossible to move the car out of park. Manually putting the button back on, or taping it into position did not work. There was no override (I called the dealer to verify what I should do). Trying with my fingers to push the keypad inside did not work. I had to have the car towed to the dealer. The tow truck driver had difficulty also, as he could not put it into Neutral to avoid damage. There is a bolt on the transmission underneath to take it out of gear, but the dealer said that requires a special aftermarket tool, not provided with the vehicle. It was impossible to get the car out of park by trying to insert fingers or other objects into the hole where the button had been. This was literally a walk home scenario. With this plastic button broken - the car was stuck in a parking garage in park indefinitely. Only the tow truck driver's persistence of jamming different kinds of objects into the gear shift for over 35 min allowed him to finally be able to activate the switch with the button missing. It's at the dealer now, but I was basically stranded with no ways to override this and get the car in gear. This seems like a concern (and a fairly simple root cause to solve with a more robust button - or a minimum some kind of accessible alternative method to get out of park)

My 2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio was diagnosed by a certified Alfa Romeo dealer with a major engine defect involving coolant mixing with oil. The diagnosis revealed internal failure likely stemming from the oil cooler or head gasket, and the parts estimate alone was over $17,000 — not including labor. The dealer confirmed the issue but stated no recalls apply and denied warranty coverage. The car showed early signs like minor overheating and coolant loss, but no clear warning lamps or check engine lights until the issue escalated. This defect significantly increases the risk of engine failure, overheating, or loss of power while driving — posing a serious safety concern. I have since discovered multiple other owners reporting the exact same problem in Alfa Romeo forums and consumer complaint sites. The dealer has confirmed the issue but refused support. I believe this may reflect a broader design flaw affecting many vehicles and should be investigated for potential recall.

I brought it back to Jim Ellis and left it again and a few hours later they called and said that the Stelvio needed a new turbocharger that would be $4000 plus installation fees. My car has had numerous issues/errors and drivabilty concerns over the last 3 years with the automatic torque vectoring (ATV) system. The vehicle has unstable/unusual driving when the system is malfunctioning and the system does not store any error codes when the car is turned off. The vehicle has been to 2 different dealers more than 6 times and they are unable to find the root cause. I have to drive straight to a dealer to have the codes read as soon as there is a malfunction because it all gets erased when the car is shut off. This is a safety issue that the manufacturer cannot figure out how to fix on my car.

Alpha romero when driving in heavy traffic at highway speeds, accelerating and braking occur together and often, the engine will cut off and all systems become inoperable. Stop/start system failure symbol appears on screen. This will occur when stop/start system despite having disengaged by pressing button on dashboard. It takes several seconds for the engine to come back on. During this interval, the car can not be controlled. Car is moving but can;t be controlled by driver. Alpha romeo customer center is aware of problem but says there is no fix available at this although they have known about it for some time. In my opinion is this an extremely dangerous situation and an immediate recall is needed to prevent serious injury/damage. Recall is necessary to fit this problem immediately. This has happened more than once.

I was in the process of merging on the the express way when my vehicle threw a warning light, "service electronic throttle control" along with a "service engine" message and a check engine light. The vehicle went into a "limp" and had extremely poor acceleration, I was almost rear ended because the vehicle couldn't reach highways speeds fast enough. The vehicle has not yet been inspected my the manufacturer but I did some research on this issue and found it to be alarmingly common. There seems to be no clear answer to the reason for this and no sure repairs for the problem. This poses a safety risk to drivers as this problem seems to happen while accelerating. It can be dangerous if someone on the expressway is attempting to merge into 60mph traffic and hit "limp mode" at roughly 30. I believe an investigation need to be conducted regarding this followed by a recall of the affected part.

There's a problem called etc error. It has happened 5 times since 9500 mileage. And now car has 15900 mileage. Every time it happened when i was on highway trying to accelarate. When that problem occured, i suddenly lost power and had to pull over in the middle of traffic. Then i needed to shut down the engine and restarted, after this action power was back on with engine check light on, too. And car was driveable with auto start/stop and remote start unavailable. I went to dealships 3 times. First dealship can't not locate the problem and just reset computer. Second dealship found one problem and replaced a part. But after a couple thousands of miles, the problem happened again. I have two videos, but they are too big to upload.

I bought my 2018 stelvio in dec 2017. I thought it was odd the car needed a software update only about three days after having it - now after researching i've learned many people have brought their new alfa romeos in for "software updates" related to all the sensors and electrical systems. My car currently has about 5k miles on it and in those miles i have experienced on about 3 or 4 occasions a warning message on my display that reads "gear selector malfunction" or "automatic transmission failure". The message also tells me for both issues not to shift out of "drive". After about 10 seconds the error went away. I thought it was a fluke because during that moment i never felt any difference or experienced anything strange. However, i was in a collision with a stationary object (a metal barrier pole in a parking lot). I put the vehicle in reverse, the vehicle indicated it was in reverse and the rear camera displayed along with the overhead picture of the vehicle with the sensor layout. I proceeded to back up by pushing the throttle and the vehicle launched forward with a huge amount of force. I struck the pole. No one was injured. No property damage other than to my vehicle. Initial assessment is metal bumper replacement, radiator and cooling. But airbags never deployed. However the sensors never indicated i was near an object either while i was clearly in reverse. After research i found there have been a slew of electrical issues as alfas are drive by wire and use sensors and software to run the vehicle and people are reporting bad batteries which are causing faults. I believe my fault has to do with a bad battery with low voltage and my sensors and software are not up to date which i should be notified about. I've filed an insurance claim however i would like escalate this incident to determine the cause for myself and others and to prevent future occurrences.

As an SUV, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your Stelvio's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
