How to read a Alfa Romeo Giulia VIN — every digit explained
Every Alfa Romeo Giulia carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Giulia.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Giulia VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Hello, I was driving in the highway at highway speed and my engine shutdown with any sort of warning. I almost caused a huge accident. After I took it to the Alfa Romeo dealer, I had to replace the fuel pump according to the dealer, which is a common problem. I think Alfa Romeo should do a recall on the fuel pump. I also, scratched my car due to this incident avoiding a bigger accident. This car needs to be recalled for fuel pump repairs for all the car with the old bad fuel pump design. Thank you
While on the highway stuck in traffic, it was a stop and go at very slow speeds. When resuming the acceleration (while in normal from the dna ). I slowly began to accelerate, when i pressed the breaks the feeling on the pedal was abnormal and the car did not stop causing me to hit the vehicle in front of me. It felt as if the breaks did not fully engage, the car just kept going while only pressing the breaks which i repeat again felt as if they did not fully engage. All this happened while going at a very low speed no more than 20mph. No one was hurt as all this happened at a very slow speed. However it scares me to drive the vehicle now. Not too long ago i had it in the service where they performed a fault with the sound system and a misaligned hood. I have also felt the breaks acting funny while coming to a stop light per say, it takes a while for the car to fully stop whether a soft press on the pedal or a hard one. There seems to be a "dead point" when stepping on the break pedal as well. We were able to drive the crushed giulia to the nearest shop. The other party who was hit didn't suffer much damages, on my car, both headlamps broke, hood crushed inwards and the bumper is trashed. I have expressed my concern with alfa romeo but never received a reply. On a side not i have been having constant electrical problems pop up randomly since i purchased the vehicle in 2017. All of which has been addressed by the alfa romeo dealership, however it has been in the service drive over 5 times since purchased. My vehicle has 13k miles on it.
I purchased this vehicle at the end of may 2017, after putting on about 500 mi within 4 weeks, a check engine light came on, i took it to the dealership, they kept it overnight, looked at it, and called the following day & said there was "something loose that needed to be tightened" and that the car was ready for pick up. I drove the car and parked it in my garage. The following day, i took the car out, turned it around and backed it up to park in front of my garage, i was going slowly (under 5 mph) the braked locked up and the car accelerated in reverse hitting my garage before i could stop it by turning off the engine. I called the dealership, but got no response. A few hours later i had a lunch appointment. The man i was meeting wanted me to take him for a short ride in the car, which i did. As we returned to the restaurant, i pulled into the parking space slowly, and engaged the brakes, again the car went into sudden acceleration, going over arborvitae trees and into a neighboring parking lot. The dealership was called and the car towed. On both of these occasions i was driving slowly, both times i had my foot on the brake and felt them lock as the car went into acceleration, and both times i had to turn off the car to get it to stop.
Check engine light, electronic throttle control warning, and auto start/stop warning lights illuminate intermittently. OBD scan revealed codes P018B and P018D (Fuel Pressure Sensor B Circuit). Freeze frame data shows fuel rail pressure at 20,030 kPa under full throttle load, significantly below expected range. Engine running lean with short term fuel trim at +11.7%. Dealer and FCA confirmed awareness of fuel pump recall 93C covering this vehicle but no remedy currently available. Vehicle poses stall risk under acceleration
Twice now, my 2019 Giulia, which only has 27,100 miles, has flashed a check engine light and a "flash/lighting" symbol while driving at highway speeds. When this happened, the vehicle's throttle became unresponsive. This resulted in a sudden power loss--the accelerator would not respond to input, which creates a huge safety issue. I had it towed as I did not want to cause an accident. My trusted mechanic ran the diagnostic code (P008a) which indicated low pressure from the fuel pump. This is addressed in recall numbers 93C (Manufacturer) and 25V-586 (NHTSA). However, NHTSA does not show any active recalls for my vehicle VIN. My local dealership indicated this is because Alfa Romeo has not distributed the correct parts to the dealerships. Alfa Romeo customer service said this is incorrect. I am stuck with an unsafe and unreliable vehicle due to the precise recall item that Alfa Romeo says does not apply to my vehicle.
There is an open safety recall on my vehicle since September 2025 with no updates on when a remedy will be available from Stellantis. The issue is that fuel supply to the engine can be cut off causing the vehicle to lose power unexpectedly and go LOMP. I cannot drive the vehicle in this state because it is dangerous if the engine were to cut off unexpectedly at highway speeds, especially since I have a baby. Safety recall information: Issue date: Sep 09, 2025 Manufacturer Recall Number: 93C NHTSA Recall Number: 25V-586 Recall Status: Recall Incomplete, remedy not yet available It is unacceptable that Stellantis have still not provided a remedy or an ETA to fix the problem even after 4 months. My car is sitting idly in the garage and I'm paying hundreds of dollars every month in loan and insurance costs without being able to drive. I have called my dealership several times and they don't have an update from the manufacturer yet either. I would like to make a formal complaint against Stellantis to fix this issue with immediate urgency since it is dangerous to drive the car in its current state and I'm just losing money without being able to use it.

Car suddenly got p018c & p018b codes along with (setc) notification while on freeway and continuously would go in and out of limp mode when accelerating or breaking which nearly caused me to crash. when arriving home I check my fuel pump relay and it looked burnt or overheated, I tried replacing sensors as well as relays but the problem remains whenever accelerating or breaking at low speed now, just without the check engine light.
My car would not accelerate. “Electronic Throttle Warning” and my “auto start stop” lights popped up on dashboard. Dealer claimed it was something else, had me pay and the problem is still occurring. They cannot figure it out I think it’s the recall and they tell me they’re unsure. My car has a recall in which all these things happen with the recall but they keep saying it’s not.
My engine shut off and I was entering my driveway. All the electric was fine. The vehicle would no longer start. I towed it to the dealer and was told that the fuel pump and a module for the fuel pump would have to be replaced. The dealer cannot find the part anywhere because it is on back order. Apparently this is happening a lot. This should be investigated for a safety recall due to it happening while I was driving.

The brake by wire system failed, and another component caused the vehicle to accelerate when I hit the brake pedal. I didn't have any proof on the last complaint, but I have it now. This brake failure caused me to rear end someone, which caused a multiple vehicle accident. The dealership I took it to was aware that I was having electrical issues with the car, but they said they couldn't do anything about it because they couldn't find any fault codes. I even sent them a video of it as well. I also believe this car was involved in a prior accident as well by one of the previous owners and fixed by one of them under the table, because the front bumper shock absorber plate broke in half, and had writing on it as well that looked like something a repair shop would do. This car is unsafe.
Caught on fire while parked for over an hour. No indication of any problem when driven earlier in the day. Parked in outdoor apt lot. Smelled smoke. Ran out and saw engine was on fire. Called fire department to extinguish it.
When pulling into a parking space with foot on the brake the engine revs and surges forward. This has happened 2 times over the course of 2 years with out damage or personal injury. Twice in the last month. The third incident happened on October 15, 2024 causing the vehicle to surge/accelerate hitting another vehicle then crashing into the cart corral at a supermarket. Fortunately, no one was run over. Same scenario. Pulling into a parking space applying the brake. Then acceleration.

The contact owns a 2019 Alfa Romeo Giulia. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the accelerator pedal was depressed, however the vehicle failed to accelerate as intended. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was driven to the residence nearby. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The contact stated that the vehicle was inoperable and could not be driven because of the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.
When traveling at approximately 40 mph, the vehicle displayed a service electronic throttle control warning. Turned on the engine light, then after 1 second the vehicle shut off while in motion with no warning. This disabled all power including brakes and power steering. After clearing engine code vehicle worked for around 20 minutes before repeating while idle in my driveway. Engine code displayed is p008a. (Low fuel pressure)

On 12/30/2020 the car was wrecked into a light pole at 55-60 mph. Major front end damage the seatbelts didn't lock and the airbags did not deploy. The manufacture is not being responsible.the vehical currently has a product liability hold on it for inspection but it has not been inspected as of today. I think they are trying to cover it up and not report it.i was injured and they don't care.they still call for payments but no calls about the vehicals inspection from fca.the vehicals was on a city street.*dt*jb

I was cut off by another vehicle without signaling, the road was slick I brakes but ended up hydroplaning and my brakes seemed to give out.
I was travelling along the road when 3 cars suddenly hit the brakes really hard. I was able to hit my brakes fast, but I did not feel any pressure on the pedal and I was unable to avoid hitting the car in front of me. I also had a problem with the start system. I was randomly unable to start the car (about 3 times.) I would have to wait 10 minutes or longer for the car to be able to start again. I also noticed that the front bumper frame of my car was split in half (as if I had hit a post or something big.) I also noticed that there was writting on the front bumper frame (no foam padding in between,) and the following written on the front (DNR. 01/09/2017 and a time 10:20.) I don't know what's going on with my vehicle. It's frustrating and I've had to take it to the dealership a few time 3 hours away.

Vehicle stalled on the road as soon as I stopped at a red light.
Due to a faulty starter relay, my Alfa Romeo Giulia would intermittently not start or restart. The dashboard illuminated properly but the starter did not engage and the engine did not attempt to crank. Afterwards, a warning lamp would sometimes appear saying "auto start/stop unavailable". This became a safety hazard when the auto start/stop feature shut the engine down at a stop light and the car would not restart when the light turned green. In my case, the light turned green and other cars were approaching the intersection and I could not move out of the way. The problem occurred multiple times on initial startup and while driving in a 3 week period before it the faulty relay was replaced under warranty by my local dealer. The car's ECU recorded P26E4-OO for start stop relay and the dealer had seen the issue before. The part has been upgraded and should proactively be recalled.
My car since i have had it has had 1 recall, some type of electrical problem, and 3 times it had to go to the shop because of fuel system failure. I was told it was a lot of water in the system, but i used the same gas station that they use to put gas in the car after it was drained and refilled. Every time i had an issue with my car i was always in motion. Once this car stops you are stuck wherever you are at because you can not put this car in neutral to push it out of the road. I have felt like my life was in jeopardy each time this car has stopped on me. I have no photos because my car is currently in the shop right now. It has been in the shop since 10/03/2020

Car speed up on it on, and would not stop ,tried to push brake pad car still didn't stop car cash into another car air bag catch on fire shot some kind of metal piece in my leg and put a hole in my leg and metal pieces hit my face and burn it had to go to hospital with injuries due to this
The brake by wire system failed, and another component caused the vehicle to accelerate when I hit the brake pedal.
I was cut off by another vehicle without signaling, the road was slick I brakes but ended up hydroplaning and my brakes seemed to give out.
I was in the 10 East, in upland, 300 yard after Euclid exit, I just got into the freeway, there was a lot of traffic, we were going slow and my breaks totally stop working!!!! And I hit the car in front of me !!!
The brakes failed on the car causing my vehicle to crash into my home. The airbags did not deploy. The vehicle is available for inspection and is currently at the dealership. Alfa Romeo has sent out a special investigations team to inspect the vehicle and has escalated the issue to their legal department. Due to the failure of the brakes, I could have killed myself or others. There were zero warning lights prior to the failure. The vehicle is located at Northside Imports in Spring, Texas.
The contact owns a 2018 Alfa Romeo Giulia. The contact stated that while at a complete stop on several occasions, the engine abnormally revved to 1,100-1,400 RPMs. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed low speed on a ramp, the vehicle accelerated unintendedly and failed to decelerate while the brake pedal was depressed. Additionally, the contact stated that while at a complete stop at the red light, the engine revved, and the vehicle accelerated unintendedly while the brake pedal was depressed and struck another stopped vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. No police report was filed. The contact's vehicle sustained minor damage, while the other vehicle did not sustain damage. There was no warning light illuminated. There were no reported injuries. Both vehicles were drivable after the incident. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was test-driven, but the failure could not be duplicated. A third-party contractor, sent by the manufacturer, performed an evaluation of the vehicle and sent the raw data report to the contact. The contact noticed that the crash incident date listed on the report was March 4, 2026, while the incident occurred on April 4, 2026. The contact informed the third-party contractor of the error, and the contact was concerned that the contractor had pulled the wrong data because the incident date listed was incorrect. The manufacturer later sent a summary of the evaluation report to the contact, stating that the reported incident was not due to the manufacturer's responsibility. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 26,000.
The carbon ceramic brakes were inconsistent when driving new, but not noticeable enough to immediately go to the dealer in the first ~2000 miles. The car was used in traffic at a relatively slow speed. But then it failed, and as a resultant an accident happened. The dealer is refusing to acknowledge this issue. Alerted manufacturer with no response. The car has taken over 5 months to fix, still with the manufacturer for the brake issue. *tt *tr ..*bf. Consumer stated that braking in the new vehicle is inconsistent and alleges that he was in a low speed accident as a result. The customer states the car has taken over 5 months to fix and is at the manufacturer for the brake issue. Updated 11/1/18*jb

Car had sudden loss of power. Later diagnosed as fuel pump and fuel pump module issue.
i have been waiting for months received a letter from Alfa Romeo sent them my details, for them to get in touch with me when the remedy for this potential dangerous fault to be rectified. Many crashes have taken place, as the car could potentially cut out whilst on the highways. For Alfa Romeo to leave me in a state where this car could cut out without warning at any stage is not unacceptable. I have to use my car for work, and I am having to resort to using other means with the fear this car could cut out on me on the freeways. They have failed to respond to my email or have they sent me a followup letter to get my car booked in and fixed.
Fuel pump issues have caused my car to create unsafe driving. My etc system kicks on and off while driving which causes massive loss of power then accelerates to the point of red line. it's like I'm putting my pedal to the floor in traffic when trying to inch up. Fuel lump is on order for me but has been on back order for more than 3 months with no date of shipment. Dealership said car was OK to drive but could ultimately cut off and not start back up till this part is replaced.
The Electronic Throttle control and check engine lights came on suddenly, and then the car lost power. It would not turn off or turn on. The gear shifter did not work. It just stalled. Could not engage or disengage emergency brake. Steering wheel locked. I got it towed to Alfa Romeo of Glendale and they told me the fault was with a faulty fuel pressure sensor, which they replaced, telling me if the error recurred they would need to replace the fuel tank. The safety of everyone was put at risk because the car abruptly lost power and could not be moved off the road.
On 7/13/2023 while driving at about 40 mph with a half tank of gas the engine shut down and the car rolled to a stop. It took about 3 or 4 tries to restart the car over a span of 10 minutes. A scan of the codes at a repair shop indicated issues with the fuel pump. Check Engine Light came on when the incident happened. There are 11,000 miles on the car.
2018 giulia qv but it has been in the shop in pensacola for over 7 consecutive weeks and they still have not figured out what's wrong. Under acceleration and left hand turns the service electronic throttle lights up as well as various other lights. What's scary is the power steering temporarily stops, yanking the wheel hard right and i have to muscle it to keep it from running off the road. Nothing short or dangerous. I have had a case open with alfa cares and have tried to escalate with no result.
Tl* the contact owns a 2018 alfa romeo giulia. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the instrument panel became inoperable and the vehicle decelerated independently without warning. The contact waited for an hour before restarting the vehicle and driving to his destination. The vehicle was taken to maserati of st. Petersburg located at 3033 gandy blvd, pinellas park, fl 33782, (727) 374-4500, to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the low-pressure fuel pump and an unknown wiring harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to alfa romeo fort lauderdale located at 5730 n. Federal hwy, fort lauderdale, fl 33308, (754) 238-0322 however, the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure. The contact stated on a second occasion while driving 45 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. While attempting to pull over, the vehicle independently restarted. The vehicle was again taken to maserati of st. Petersburg where an unknown wiring harness was replaced. The contact was also informed that there was also an unknown issue with the battery. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was then taken back to maserati of st. Petersburg for some minor electrical issues. The mechanic performed a software update and reconnected an unknown wiring harness. The contact stated on june 28, 2020 while approaching a traffic light, when he heard an abnormal noise and was unable to shift out of park. The contact waited for an hour, disconnected the battery, and was able to restart the vehicle and drove to his destination. The manufacturer had been informed of failure. The failure mileage was 5,596.
I recently purchased this 2018 alfa romeo guilia used. I was not totally familiar with the fuel system warning, and i believed i had at least 20-25 miles of fuel remaining. I may have miscalculated my mileage, but in any event, i ran out of fuel (i was close to a gas station as was able to get the fuel and start the car within 20 minutes overall). The car stopped, and the it automatically entered park mode, preventing it from being put into neutral and pushed to the side of the road, as required by law, or picked up for road service unless the tower had a wheel dolly, to handle a 4-wheel drive car. I think this is a critical safety hazard. I researched the issue. The only solution i could find, not documented in the owner's manual, is a lever on the transmission, located under the car, which can be pushed up only with a particular machine screw. Obviously this cannot be done with a car stuck on the road. I called zf, the maker of the transmission, which is used in millions of cars. Zf advised that i was correct, and that manufacturers can put in in-car access to the lever or software solutions to put the car in neutral, but that is the responsibility of each manufacturer. I called fca, the manufacturer, and they indicated that i had to call a dealer. I called my local dealer, alfa romeo white plains (ny). The service manager, who is an alfa romeo master mechanic, indicated that he had encountered this situation several times, and had asked fca to fix this. He has received no useful response or solution. Although this situation may be rare (it applies not only to out of fuel, but many other situations of electrical or other failures), it is a major safety hazard. I was lucky. I was stopped in the middle of a little traveled local street. What if it had been on a highway? Please issue a recall to require documentation or a fix to correct this defect.
After several issues with paddle shifters the right rear seat belt failed. It would not retrack properly and then totally locked in the mid position making it totally unusable to secure my 8 year old child. The car is about three weeks old with approx. 700 miles

I was driving my 2018 alfa romeo gulia quadrifoglio in houston, tx. I was heading on i-45 south towards the ramp to merge on grand parkway 99 west. Once i was on grand parkway 99, i placed the car on cruise control. It was raining very hard and the cruise control was set to 75mph. Suddenly, the car hydroplaned and skidded slightly to the left and then it spun right 180 degrees facing the oncoming traffic. Now the car is going in reverse from the fastest lane, to the slow lane, then the emergency lane, and finally; the car slid off into the sloping wet grass down the side of the freeway and came to a stop when the slope subsided into a flat grass shoulder. It was almost 200-300+ feet away from the inclining concrete freeway where i slipped off onto the wet grassy sloping shoulder. The car came to a stop at the flat part of the grassy shoulder after an estimated 200-300+ feet. I have attached the image showing the start of the skid to the finish where the car stopped facing backwards. I was able to drive the car off the grass onto the service road and went to an exxon gas station (22207 kuykendahl rd, spring, tx 77379) to check the damage. Luckily i was not hurt and i did not notice any damage to the car. In my experience, i firmly believe that the cruise control in the car disabled all traction control and anti-slip control in the car because non of those systems intervened. When the car started to hydroplane, i did not feel the traction control stop the faster wheel from spinning, and before i could do anything the car skidded 180 degrees without any anti-skid control intervention. A possible conclusion is that the wheel speed sensors are dedicate to the cruise control and not sending any data to the safety systems such as anti-slip, anti-skid, or yaw and pitch sensors that keep a modern car on the intended path.
Tl* the contact owns a 2017 alfa romeo giulia. When the vehicle was started, several unknown warning indicators illuminated and the headlights were inoperable. On another occasion, the brake pedal was depressed; however, the vehicle independently accelerated and crashed into the garage door. There were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to alfa romeo of wilmington pike (99 wilmington pike a, chadds ford, pa 19317, (484) 840-7190) to be diagnosed, but the mechanic was unable to duplicate the failure or retrieve a fault code. The contact stated that after picking up the vehicle at the dealer, it independently accelerated again less than ten miles away. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The manufacturer was not notified of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000. *tr*dt *tr
Vehicle presenting significant life-threatening system-wide failures while driving. These catastrophic system failures result in the vehicle becoming immediately undrivable without warning placing passengers at significant risk, particularly when traveling at high speeds (e.g., interstates). The following summarizes system-wide failures in the 2018 Giulia and failed attempts to correct this defect by Alfa Romeo and dealer: •11/30/20: One (1) day of service after complete multi-system failure while driving locally. Returned same day by service department but failed to repair (see following service report). •11/30/20 – 12/4/20: Five (5) days of service. Vehicle presented to dealer service department immediately after pick-up from aforementioned service to correct 2nd systemic failure which subsequently occurred promptly after departing the dealership. Resulting system failure produced highly dangerous operating conditions in which vehicle became immediately and unexpectedly incapacitated while attempting to merge into interstate traffic at accelerating speed. •1/25/21 – 2/5/21: Twelve (12) days of service following 3rd system failure. As per dealer service reps, an Alfa Romeo service agent stated there was a defect in in the molds used for creating engine / engine blocks in the Giulia and the resulting defects can cause an oil leak while in operation which, based on its location, can result in entire operating system collapsing unexpectedly when said leak occurs. As documented in the service record, metal shavings were found in the oil and oil pump of vehicle and per the guidance of the Alfa Romeo service agent, dealer replaced the entire engine •12/10/21: On 12/10/21, the 4th catastrophic system failure occurred during interstate travel in the rain while attempting to accelerate and pass a slow moving vehicle. Vehicle became unexpectedly incapacitated causing seriously life-threatening conditions. Vehicle available for inspection currently.
The contact owns a 2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia. The contact stated while driving 35 MPH and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The message “Service Electronic Throttle Control” was displayed. The contact stated that a dealer was contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not under recall. The failure mileage was 50,000.
The car stop by itself in the middle of the road and i just could make it to pull it over and lights appear on the car dashboard the check engine, the electronic throttle control, and other light that i dont know what it is but it was an "a!" . I turn off the car and i waited for 10 min an i turn it on again and it works but the lights still were there, so i took it to the dealer ship because i have only 4 month with the car and it is an used car, but it has only 19000 miles to have that kind of problems. At the dealership they told me that they dont have space to check the car probably until october that they will call me, but when we went back to home the car did the same it start to drop the speed by itself and stop , and i just parked in my house and i have not move it, the car has other problems to check, the hook connections and the tires, but the thing is that the dealership say they have too many cars in front of mine and they will check it probably until october 2020. I really think those vehicles alfa romeo guilia should be checked from the electrical system because life of people is in risk when they just stop in middle of the road.
My car acts funny when using cruise control. Doesn't keep the speed i set it up at. Another thing that i've notice is when turning the sterring wheel the car feels funny too. It sound like my tire hits something.
