How to read a Bentley Bentayga VIN — every digit explained
Every Bentley Bentayga carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Bentayga.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Bentayga VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Service Brakes 3 Read
On July 19, 2019, with 8800 miles on my 2018 Bentley Bentayga, I took it into an authorized Bentley dealer repair shop for routine service. I was advised that the brakes, front, and back were dangerously low. There was no prior warning or indication of this problem. I had the front and back brakes replaced. In September 2022 with approximately 16,000 miles on the car, I noticed a squeaking noise coming from the front end of the car. On November 14, 2022, I took it back to the same authorized Bentley Repair shop. I was advised that the front brakes were dangerously low and needed to be replaced. The service man advised me that he had customers having their brakes go bad in this car in as little as 5,000 miles without notice..
Easy cyber attack against new bentley - critical issue it is incredibly dangerous to connect this car to the internet using a sim card, as the car is littered with high impact vulnerabilities that can easily be exploited to shut down systems, this would deny service of systems, like steering or brakes, or airbags. There are nearly 100 connected devices in the car that is centrally managed using one computer systems that is very vulnerable. This is a fundamental problem at bentley hq, as one of the vulnerabilities was first identified in 1999, it was patched in 1999 and yet a 2017 car still has the vulnerability without any patch. This means not only is this car extremely vulnerable to cyber attack but the process to design the software in the factory had little to no regard to customer security. It is possible to electronically sweep all ip's in the usa searching for bentley bentagya's and then construct a cyber attack at all vehicles simultaneously. This is a very very serious issue. I notified bentley and provided the full cyber assessment report and had not reply whatsoever. They should immediately have every customer remove the sim card (this should be a critical recall) for the vehicle to prevent an attack from the other side of the world. Then they need to consider localised attacks as the car travels with a wifi bubble that is exploitable. This is how this report attached was prepared in the first instance.
Bentley dynamic cruise control - dangerous the car has dynamic cruise control that is very dangerous in certain settings. It is possible to shorten the distance to the next car on a highway to approximately 100 yards, and the car will continue at the cruise if there is no car in front. Then on the highway when traffic is stopped or slow the car will drive at say 65 mph directly toward the stopped vehicles because the setting is set at 100 yards. The radar has the ability to see 300-400 yards, but in the shortened setting instead of looking out at 300-400 yards it disregards that input taking only the 100 yard input. What then happens is the car on realising that the stationary object is now at 100 yards attempts to do an emergency stop. Which is impossible. This happened by accident to me on a highway, and i have to swerve onto the hard shoulder to avoid a collision. If the manufacturer wants to install intelligent systems then it would be really helpful if they were designed right. It is absolutely possible to take a radar input at 300 yards and 100 yards from the system and then manage this situation safely. This is a basic design fault. They should go test a mercedes to see how to design this properly.
Air Bags 3 Read
The contact stated that she was a standing outside of a 2017 Bentley Bentayga while guiding a driver to park the vehicle in a residential garage when the anti-collision and anti-pedestrian feature failed. The contact stated that she was providing information from the electronic data recorder. The contact stated that the information provided was that the vehicle was traveling at 11 mph, when the accelerator pedal was depressed several times, the vehicle accelerated crashing into the contact and the garage wall. The contact stated that the air bags did not deploy. A police report was not filed. The contact sustained two fractured wrists and a spinal injury that required medical attention. The vehicle was not drivable and was towed to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer nor the manufacturer had been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 4,000.

1 the car will slip into neutral when you take your foot off the gas, even in terrible weather. This means no gear is actually engaged, and if an emergency occurs it has to first find a gear before you can utilise power. I can send attach a video to show the point in full, in very bad weather, but it will tno let me attach it here 2 we have done a cyber assessment on the car snd it is terrible, we tested a hospital chain in virginia and this single car was worse that over 10 hospitals combined. Systems can potentially be turned off cyberly. One vulnerability was first identified in 1999, and it was patched in 1999 and on this bentley it still exists. Both make this car extremely unsafe.

Steering 2 Read
Bentley lane assist - major issue the bentley lane assist is supposed to keep you in a lane, however twice now i have been travelling on a two way road and it has taken me with a violent steering manoeuvre into oncoming traffic. The issue is that when you are in a two lane road and the road markings in the centre line spread apart for a left turn area, the car will often follow the outside line instead of the inside line, that line taking you into oncoming traffic. You then need to violently yank the steering to correct he lane assist. I took the vehicle immediately to bentley after the second occasion and they failed again to find the fault. They asked me if i could video it happening - but that seems to make a dangerous situation more dangerous and i don't know when it is going to happen. This is the problem with self driving cars that are designed badly, it makes you incredibly nervous to drive as you never know what the car is going to do.

The auto start on this bentley bentagya most of the time does not work properly, but as i am now over 12,000 miles it has started to cause the car to call at odd times. For example coming out of a parking space the car stalled leaving me half in and half out the space. It also stalled at a traffic light 3 days ago. Then the warnings common and then go off, finally i captured this warning on camera. Annoyingly the bentley system does not seem to log the warnings and all the failures as every time i take this car to the dealer they claim they cant find the problem, despite having evidence in hand, such as a photo like this. You could call this car a lemon but you would be better to call to badly designed - there are some sever issues with this model most going directly to safety.

Can a Bentley Bentayga tow? Towing & payload
As an SUV, the Bentley Bentayga is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.
What sets your Bentayga's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
