How to read a Jayco Greyhawk VIN — every digit explained
Every Jayco Greyhawk carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Jayco and the country it was built in (real Jayco codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Greyhawk.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- —1UJ
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your Greyhawk, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

After a recent purchase of a new 2026 Jayco Greyhawk 29MV RV, I discovered my 2 cats trying to enter a previously unknown and unfinished opening adjacent to a designated sleeping/play area of my RV in the cab overhead. One of the cats was panicked as he was stuck in the opening. The opening is very difficult to see unless you climb well forward into the sleeping area for closer examination which I did not do before my purchase. The area contains a very long area of sharp, unfinished and in some places splintered fiberglass edging that actually goes the entire distance around the window opening. Since this easily accessible area is intended for sleeping/playing, a curious child could attempt reaching into the area to retrieve a toy or a pet could enter it and get cut by the unfinished fiberglass or be unable to exit. Portions of the fiberglass are inward flexible which increases chances of an entry and then unable to exit. The area also has accessible loose insulation which further increases the safety hazard. My concern is that a child or pet getting inside and being unable to exit with getting severe cuts from the sharp fiberglass surface. I reported this to the dealer who then informed Jayco who agreed to pay the dealer a whole "0.5 hours" labor for the dealer to "figure out a fix" for the issue. Apparently this issue is in many different makes/models (per the local dealer) and I feel there should be a proper fix applied to all of the fleet rather than a local patch merely to appease just the one customer that found the issue. As a retired military Safety Manager who authored numerous safety messages for issues for Army aviation, I feel this should be investigated for a possible fleetwide safety recall. Based on my conversation with the local dealer, it seems Jayco does not intend to do any further work on the affected vehicles. See attached pictures.
Tl* the contact owns a 2019 jayco greyhawk rv. The contact stated the rear exit window latch was loose. The contact reached out white horse rv center located at 980 n black horse pike, williamstown, nj 08094, (856) 262-1717, and notified the dealer of the failure. The rv was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,017. *ln*jb
While driving to a casino parking lot i heard something scraping under the vehicle. I pulled over and looked under the coach where i discovered that the hydraulic system had dropped on the ground (see photo). An accident could have occurred if this had happened at highway speeds.*dt*jb
Jayco installed residential carpet directly over the uninsulated floor if the ford e-450 cutaway chassis. When the unit is sitting in traffic in hot weather the carpet begins to melt and smoke. This is most acute at high ambient temperature with the unit moving at slow speed or if the unit has been driving up a long grade and then is stopped at a light or in traffic. Jayco redesigned the 2015 model year greyhawks to properly insulate the floor however there are thousands of units endangering the public on the road. Jayco did replace the affected carpet on my unit however, they replaced it with residential foam rubber not certified for use in an automotive cab. I paid out of pocket to have proper automotive grade insulation put down before the rebond residential pad was placed on the cab floor. *tr
Electrical System 4 Read
While camping in a campsite and connected to shore power the iota 50 amp automatic transfer switch (ats) shorted and caught fire. There was smoke in the cabin and flames coming from the ats which extinguished themselves before the fire extinguisher could be retrieved from the front of the cabin. *js the resulting damage besides the ats also included mainline wiring to the shore power connection and the main circuit panel. Costs of repair exceeded $1,000. This the second time a fire has occurred on an iota 50 amp ats in this particular vehicle previously being reported in oct 2010. The placement of the unit is directly underneath a wardrobe in the bedroom and within inches of the bottom drawer. This is an extremely dangerous situation and a product that has an obvious history of shorts and fires. We were fortunate that serious injuries were avoided. *js
2007 jayco greyhawk 33ds there is evidence of an electrical fire in the transfer switch for the main cabin that damaged the transfer switch, left residue and caused an electrical service failure to the front of the cabin while operating on the on-board generator. This occurred over a period of two years until a total failure ceased operations. The transfer switch was ultimately replaced by a service dealer and the failed unit is in my possession. The service technician at the dealer indicated that it was most likely an issue with one of the set screws that had not been secured properly during manufacture. I have contacted jayco for reimbursement as of today. My concern is that this fire would have obviously occurred while the unit was occupied. I feel that i am fortunate that a more serious event had not occurred and that the remainder of the rv is still intact. I can provide photos and the physical unit if required. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 jayco greyhawk rv motor home. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing several recurring failures. Two transfer switches, two inverters, three air conditioner lines, the battery, two entertainment units and two solenoids were all replaced by five different authorized dealers. The contact stated that each replacement part failed approximately one month after being installed in the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was informed that the warranty would soon expire. The failure mileage was 100 and the current mileage was 39,112.
The battery ran down on the chassis and was recharged. The warning lights in the instrument cluster did not come on, however, the engine started easily. Turned the engine off restarted it several times but the warning lights did not come on. All other lights came on and the illumination for the instrument cluster was lighted when the main light switch was turned on but no warning lights, oil, gas, tach, speedometer, battery condition, seat belt warning, nothing. The motor home sat for several days and when started again the warning light all came on. Prepared to go on a trip went out to start the camper no warning lights. Drove from ashland to dodge city alternator was not charging the battery but with the coach generator on the battery was charged at about 12.7 volts. Just outside of dodge city the lights came on and remained on for the rest of the trip to garden and the burtus ford dealer who ran tests and found nothing wrong changed a fuse under the dash. Returned to ashland with no problem return. The problem was not fixed. The warning lights would go off and on for no apparent reason. Sometimes they would stay on for the whole trip, other times they would go out and stay out. Jayco would not make any effort to find the problem saying it was fords problem and ford dealers in the area could not seem to find out what was happening. I have tried to trace the problem but to know avail. It would seem that an instrument panel microprocessor is some how involved. I have traced it to a possible fuse diode but cannot find a replacement part for it. The only way i can go on a trip is to use my gsr a speedometer and run the coach generator to keep the battery charged. So far the headlights and turn signals continue to work but the headlights blink of for a few moments and make it very difficult to drive at night. There have been some recalls on the workhorse chassis involving faulty microprocessors and i wonder if i have missed a recall somewhere. *tr
Tires 3 Read
Rear inside dual tire (driver side) suffered tread separation. Approximately 500 miles later the passenger inside dual also had complete tread separation. 1st failure damaged rv water line, mud flaps. 2nd failure caused loss of wheel cover. All rear tires and front (all same brand) have been replaced. Two failures is not a coincidence. There is an existing recall by bf goodrich for certain sizes of tires. Mine are not covered due to size. My failure type is as described in recall. Same rubber compound and manufacturing process. Vehicle is a jayco melbourn 31 feet in length. 1st tire has been sent off per instructions from state farm. Second tire will be presented to local dealer. Front drivers side tire (same brand and type) but 1 year newer showing side and tread cracking. Removed both front tires due to concern for front tire failure and loss of control. Rear driver duals (first blowout) were replaced with same brand, style and dot number shows 2011 manufacture date. All tires within manufacture date recall period. The recall should cover the entire size line of the state brand and type. *tr
Driving 60 mph on interstate 44. Felt sudden vibration. Thought it was roughness in the road, so i moved to a different lane. Vibration did not stop. I then thought that it might be another firestone steeltex radial tire tread separating because i have had eight (8) previous firestone steeltex radial tires suffer catastrophic tread separation failures! Before i could move to the right and get off the highway, the tread peeled all the off. It damaged the motorhome severely. Note that, although all 8 previous tread separation failures occurred explosively, this one did not explode. I got off the highway, let the air out of the failed tire and installed the spare tire until i could go get a new replacement tire.*ak
Firestone, steeltex radial tire tread separated from core explosively on our motorhome with only 28,070 miles on it. This is 1st firestone steeltex radial tire to fail on this motorhome, but it follows all seven (7) of the firestone steeltex radial tires on our last (identical) motorhome failing in exactly the same way one by one over a period of just a year or so. These tires came already on the motorhomes when we bought them new.*ak

Automatic transfer relay over heated creating a fire hazard. It's location under the bed prevents seeing the fire until it is burning. The switch is available for viewing. The rv carries 50 gallons of gasoline and 50 lbs propane a fire could cause collateral damage. This specific problem has not been inspected by a dealer or others. There was no danger warning. This is not an isolated incident on rv group websites there are many reports of this happening. No one to my knowledge has determined the cause of the malfunction that causes the fire risk they seem to just replace it with another relay. The way I found out about the malfunction was when there was no shore power to the unit, i checked circuit breakers all were good so I disconnected the shore power and tried the generator. Luckily that also failed to power up the rv. After researching the issue on the internet I checked the transfer relay and saw the burnt wires and relay. I felt very luck there was not a fire. I feel very stupid for starting the generator with relay in this condition.

Service advancement warning came on the main gauge display screen while i was driving 62 mph with cruise control set. Vehicle is a 2021 jayco greyhawk 31f class c motorhome on ford e450 chassis with 7.3l gas v-8 and 6-speed automatic transmission. Cruise control stopped working and would not come back on. Hill start assist disabled message came on after i hit "ok" for the service advancement warning. Vehicle became very difficult to control with moderate crosswind. It would sway side to side and moved all over in the lane as i steered and countersteered. Vehicle power also seemed to decrease as it would only go about 52 mph in 5th gear and would downshift to 4th in order to go from 45 up to about 55. It was terrifying to go that fast when a gust of wind hit. We pulled into a truck stop, turned off motor and let it sit a couple minutes. It restarted easily but even stationary in park and in drive (stopped) the service advancement warning came back on and the cruise control would not power on. Shut motor off and disconnected negative battery cable for about 20 minutes, hooked battery up and vehicle started with no warning lights. Drove another 20ish miles with no issues, then turned on cruise control and set it at 55. After 2 minutes the c/c shut off again, service activator warning came on, vehicle hard to control with crosswind and decreased engine power. Pulled to shoulder, tried to restart and same issue as at truck stop. Disconnected battery again 20 minutes, hooked back up and drove with no issues for 6 hrs (and 1 fuel stop) with c/c remaining off. Next day issue repeated itself: c/c turned off after about 2 minutes, service advancement light etc. Disconnect battery 20 min, restart and drove without turning on c/c for 7 hrs (w/ 2 stops) no issues. Full power and advancement electronic stability control work fine when service advancement warning is not on.*dt*jb*dt*dt*dt*jb*jb*jb*dt
Got recall final remedy notice from jayco on ser#8h1me0161. However, camping world has said the parts to fix this hazard are on "back order" for at least 12 or more weeks so they can't schedule repair appointments. We will need to operate this vehicle soon and this delay causes risk that we cannot avoid! Thus jayco's "final remedy" is false remedy, they have not actually fixed this possible hazard.

The dog house and floor between driver and passenger is reaching 130 to 140 degreesi burned my left calf, i multiple sclerosis and my leg is numb. I can't tolerate great i become lethargic. Please help health and safety concern. The longer you drive the hotter the front cab becomes. Doghouse and floor. We are afraid to drive our rv.
2015 rv, purchased new in 2014. To this day - less than 5000.00 miles. Broke down x3 within the past year (twice broken down on the highway-with services needed to tow to a dealership who could handle assessment & repair of a 31 foot rv). First two times-codes retrieved from the computer were p025a and p025b (fuel pump driver module). Currently at a dealership for assessment/repair - seems to be the same problems as the last two times (vehicle "bucking" and then shut down). Power stearing and power breaks become manual-harder to navigate to the side of the road - off to safety. Safety risk to people traveling in the rv and also to others on the highway. Having concerns regarding safety and stability of this rv. Realize this has been and probably will be still covered under warantee, however, how many times does this vehicle need to break down before it is considered to be unsafe to people traveling in the rv and also to the other individuals on the road and highway?
Wheels 2 Read
In January 2021, while traveling at approximately 65 miles per hour on a Chicago area tollroad, my motor home suddenly began violently bouncing up and down in the rear. I immediately began to slow and move to the shoulder, at which time I observed the outside left dual wheel separate from the vehicle and roll into the dividing median wall. I managed to get to the shoulder on the remaining wheel, which was also damaged beyond repair. After towing and repair, the total cost was approximately $3200. The technician was unable to determine why the wheel had suddenly broken loose. In August 2021, while traveling at approximately 60 miles per hour on an Illinois Interstate highway, I felt the right rear drop as though a tire had suddenly lost air. I immediately moved to the shoulder and, before I could come to a complete stop, observed the outside right dual wheel separate from the vehicle and stop on the shoulder. Again, the remaining wheel was damaged beyond repair. After towing and repair, the total cost was approximately $2100. Again, the technician (at a different repair facility) was unable to determine why the wheel had suddenly come loose but did mention the fact that he believed the wrong type lug nuts may have been used. These were the same lug nuts that had been on the vehicle since purchase. I have always been diligent in maintaining proper air pressure in my tires, consistently inspected them for wear and damage, and made every attempt to ensure they would not be a problem. After the first occurrence on the left side, I had the right side removed and inspected by the repair facility in Chicago and again by my local tire shop when I arrived home. Since the first occurrence, every time I stop for gas I perform a visual inspection of all tires and manually check all lug nuts to ensure they are not loose. I am curious if this has been reported previously or why this may keep happening. It is both quite frightening and dangerous.
I own a 2013 jayco greyhawk motorhome on the ford e-450 chassis equipped with michelin ltx m/s tires, lt225-75r-16. The original equipment tires had 26,000 miles on them before problems developed. On my trip to florida last month, i had to replace 3 of 6 tires due to the tread delaminating completely from the tire as if they were retreads. This happened on the interstate traveling at 65 mph. The tires nver lost air pressure, just the complete tread. I ended up replacing all 6 tires on the trip to for our own safety and to prevent further damage to the coach. The motorhome is stored inside my garage when not in use and a tire pressure monitoring system has always been in use. The dot code is b3jh 009x 3112 making them just 4 1/2 years old. I have contacted michelin about them, but don't appear to be very concerned even though they have had a previous safety recall for this specfic size tire for the same specfic reasons! The original recall was for these tires manufactured between 0210 - 2512. Supposedly the problem was corrected even though mine was manufactured just 6 weeks after the safety recall ended. Another complaint was written up by another motorhome operator in the september 2016 motorhome magazine on page 120. The tires were the same age. I wrote about them on the jayco forum page and this was a response i got," senior member join date: apr 2016 location: la grange posts: 119 i have the same greyhawk a 2009 had those tires at 25 thousand they fell apart, did not replace them with mitchelin it looks like michelin still has problems with these tires, but want ignore it since many owners of these motorhomes don't run into these issues unless they put the miles on these tires.
