How to read a Saab 9000 VIN — every digit explained
Every Saab 9000 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Saab and the country it was built in (real Saab codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this 9000.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- FinlandYK1
- SwedenYS3
Digits 4–17 — the engine code (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard, identical on every car. For the full year-code table (2001–2026), country codes and where the VIN is stamped on your 9000, see the complete guide to reading a VIN.

1998 Saab 9000 recalls 1
Equipment:other:labels
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The air bag alert label on the driver side visor was omitted. This does not conform to the requirements of fmvss no. 208, "occupant crash protection."
Risk. The vehicle occupant may not properly understand the operation of the air bag system and the need to use seat belts.
Fix. Owners will be provided with an alert label to be installed on the visible side of the driver's sun visor. If an owner so desires, their dealer can install the label for them.

1994 Saab 9000 recalls 4
Engine And Engine Cooling:cooling System
What's wrong. During low energy frontal impact collisions, the front crossmember can contact the metal tubing portion of the cooler hose assembly; and/or the hose assembly can break and leak oil onto the hot exhaust manifold or the turbocharger.
Risk. Oil leaking on these hot engine surfaces can ignite and cause a vehicular fire.
Fix. Dealers will install a protective cover which will protect the cooler and hoses from other structural components in low energy front impacts.
Air Bags:frontal:sensor/control Module-inactive
What's wrong. Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. Moisture can enter the air bag inflatable restraint electronic control module (ecm) and cause corrosion on portions of the ecm printer circuit boards.
Risk. This corrosion can possibly create open connections in circuits which control the restraint deployment, possibly causing inadvertent air bag deployment.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the exterior of the ecm. If there is no indication of moisture, a cover will be installed over the ecm. If there is indication of moisture, the dealer will replace the ecm and install a cover over the new ecm.
Service Brakes, Hydraulic:antilock/traction Control/electronic Limited Slip:control Unit/module
What's wrong. Moisture can follow the electrical harness and enter the pressure switch connector causing corrosion and malfunction of the switch.
Risk. The corrosion causes a deterioration of the electricalswitch connection and can result in false illumination of abs and/or the brake warning lights and/or the loss of power assistance because of no hydraulic pumpoperation. Loss of power assist increases the driver's brake pedal effort required for stopping which can result in extended braking distances.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the electrical connections to the abs pressure switch terminals for corrosion and install a shrink hose to the wiring harness to avoid moisture entering the connection. Pressure switches with corroded connectors will be replaced.
Exterior Lighting:brake Lights
What's wrong. One of the bulbs in each of the brake light lower outboard lamp assemblies may not have been properly wired, resulting in improper tail light illumination on brake application. This does not conform to the requirements of fmvss no 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."
Risk. Consequence of non-compliance: improper illumination of brake lights during brake application may not signal following drivers of the operator's intent to slow or stop and could result in a vehicle collision.
Fix. Dealers will modify the brake light outboard lamp assemblies to meet fmvss requirements.
1993 Saab 9000 recalls 5
Exterior Lighting:brake Lights:switch
What's wrong. A number of brake light switches have an oval-shaped piston which can get stuck under certain conditions. Other switches were mounted so that both locking tabs are not completely engaged in the mounting bracket. If one side is not engaged, the switch is misaligned with the pedal mechanism and can bind the piston movement, which can cause the brake light switch to stick in the "off" or "on" position.
Risk. This results in either the brake lights remaining on constantly or the brake lights not illuminating when the brakes are applied. This results in inaccurate signals of brake operation to other vehicle operators, and could result in an accident.
Fix. Dealers will inspect brake light switches. For vehicles with the oval-shaped piston and for vehicles with misaligned brake light switches, the brake light switch will be replaced.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the electrical connections to the abs pressure switch terminals for corrosion and install a shrink hose to the wiring harness to avoid moisture entering the connection. Pressure switches with corroded connectors will be replaced.
Fuel System, Gasoline
What's wrong. The fuel filler and tank ventilation hoses may develop cracks under the securing hose clamps, resulting in fuel leakage.
Risk. Fuel leaks may result in a fire if an ignition sourceis present.
Fix. The fuel filler and fuel ventilation hoses will be replaced with new hoses. The five securing hose clamps will be replaced by a new type with a shield that prevents damage to the hose when tightened.

1991 Saab 9000 recalls 1
Power Train:automatic Transmission
What's wrong. Improper assembly could cause the ball of the gear selector arm not to be properly fixed to the socket on the end of the gear selector cable; gear selector arm could separate from the gear selector cable at the ball socket joint.
Risk. The gear position could not be selected or determinedusing the selector lever; car could be started in gear other than park orneutral, resulting in sudden unexpected vehicle movement.
Fix. Properly seat gear selector arm ball in the selector cable socket and secure by a lock ring inside the socket.
1990 Saab 9000 recalls 1
Electrical System:ignition:switch
What's wrong. Abrasion on the printed circuit card in the combination neutral safety/backup lamp switch operated by the automatic transmission gear selector may cause residue to collect in electrical area on the circuit card.
Risk. This could cause overheating of the switch assembly withsmoke and possibly a fire in the center console area.
Fix. Add an electrical circuit, including a relay, to the backup lamp circuit to reduce the current that can flow through the combination switch.

My last two automobiles have been saab turbo's. My 1993 sabb turbo 9000 and my present 1995 turbo 9000 both developed transmission problems. My first one at approx. 49,000 miles and present one at 59,000 (appx.) miles. A partner of mines also had a transmission problem with his sabb turbo in the 60,000 mile range. Several mechanics have told me that sabb had and has problems with there turbo transmissions. I would like to know if you have received many similar complaints and if there have been any recall problems on these cars.
Clutch master cylinder failed.
Dealership replaced the automatic transmission four times. *ak
The traction control system cuts warning light comes on, the pedel forceful comes up, car slows - complete loss of power - and will not accelerate till foot is lifted of accelerator and depressed again. Pedal is now hard to depress and power loss is signifcant from normal. Very enjoyable when accelerating and changing lanes in front of a semi. This will happen occasionally when accelerating - trying to pass, get on a freeway, etc. This happens upon depressing the pedal only slightly. There is no modifications to correct and turn off completely. Dt

All i have to say is i have had this car for over a year. It has been absolutely the worst car i have ever purchased in my life.. I have had about seven.. And would never buy a saab. The transmission went at about 100,000 miles. Two months ago the abs brakes fails. The steering is making all kinds of noises. I had to replace the alternator, fuel pump..ect...every time i get in the car i feel like it's a death trap. This is the 9000 cd non turbo by the way...just thought i would let the next guy know what is happening to me. I have put almost 5,000 dollars in repairs already, i will be lucky if i can sell this car for $500 bucks and i have had it only one year. *jb

Seat Belts 10 Read
The rear center seat belt buckle came apart. It is held on to the belt by a lead pin. That pin came loose. The belt is no longer useable. It has to be replaced. A child was strapped in at the time and the car was in motion. The seat belt and latch will require replacement. I am concerned this safety feature is not safe.*ak
I reported this to you three weeks ago...still don't see it in the complaints summary. However, since my report, saab usa tells me that this problem, front seat backs that have over 2 cm of free-play front to rear in them is common throughout their saab 9000 fleet. I believe these seats are dangerous in that they add to the forces inflicted on a driver in the event of an accident. Would you please let me know you received this report by sending me a return email ([email protected])? Thanks.
Driver's seat belt becomes twisted and may fail in an accident. No accident has yet occurred. *ak
The driver's seat belt failed to release, which resulted in the consumer having to be cut out. *jb
One wheel was originally replaced at 20000 miles by dealer. It was not round. Srs (restraint system) was recalled and worked on in august of 1999, but has failed already (september of 1999).
Seat belt buckle would not unlatch or release, trapping the occupant in the seat. Please give any further details. *ak
As i began to back out of a parking space (with no other cars around), the automatic seat belt tensioner on the driver's side (part of the srs system) detonated. It sounded as if a firecracker exploded in my ear. I had not yet put on the seatbelt, so i wasn't injured, but it will cost $650 for a new seat belt assembly. The car has never been in an accident, and the airbag/srs system has never deployed before.*ak
Passenger's seat belt will not latch.
