How to read a Saab 9-7X VIN — every digit explained
Every Saab 9-7X carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this 9-7X.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your 9-7X VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the headlamps were replaced; however, the failure recurred. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 62,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 saab 9-7x. Without warning, the low beam headlamps randomly failed. The contact had to apply the high beams each time the failure occurred. The vehicle was inspected by a mechanic who mentioned that the contact needed to check with the manufacturer concerning nhtsa campaign number: 02v322000 (exterior lighting). The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall and would need to be diagnosed. The failure mileage was not available.
Low beam headlights stopped working while vehicle was traveling 70 mph on a highway. Started working again after switching to high beam and then back to low beam
My low beam head light on my saab 9-7x turns off when driving 30min. The issue is intermittent sometimes i would drive it for 1hr or longer then it turns off. But lately headlamps that do not illuminate after 30 min of driving. I've replaced the low beam head light and issue still exist. I have an identical issue but called saab customer service but recall 14v755000 is only for 05-08.
At first my head lights were cutting off at various times for various amounts of time, this happened for more than a year and i would have to turn on my bright lights while driving at night, wait for the head light to kick back in and turn off the bright lights. For the last 5 months i have had no head lights at all. I have bright lights, the orange running lights, indicator lights and fog lights. I have replaced the head light bulbs and they worked for 2 minutes and stopped working again.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 saab 9-7x. While driving at various speeds, the low beam head lamps failed to illuminate. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 62,000.
Low beams went off while driving on auto will not come back on even when changed to manuel on this has happened in different types of weather, rainy, dry, night, day. It is a hazzard you have no idea when it will happen. It happened just this past weekend in a downpour at afternoon traffic hour. Quite stressfull ! We have read of this problem and would like to know if anything can be done. I did read an earlier complaint of this same problem.
Low beam headlamps and daytime running lamps intermittently fail to illuminate, both in auto as well as manual mode. Lights fail to illuminate on start-up as well as shut off unexpectedly while driving. This is the same issue stated in the recall for 2006-2008 saab 9-7x, but inexplicably the 2009 model is not covered under this recall. This vehicle malfunction is hazardous and poses a threat to the safety of others on the road. The driver's view of the road is completely and unexpectedly impaired when the lights shut off while in motion as well as lowered visibility of the vehicle to others on the road.

My wife and i were on the drive thru line at wendys, it was raining out and i cracked the front passenger window for a litle air. A minute later we smelled something burning we werent sure where the smell was coming from until my passenger side window/lock/and heated seat switch started to emit smoke. Of course we were in a state of panic, we quickly exited the line and pulled over i didnt know what to do other than pull up the switch housing from the door panel. After doing so the smoke was evident and the wires and actual plastic housing caught fire. I was able to put the fire out. After inspecting the entire switch housing it was clear that the wires overheated and short circuited i would imagine due to the little bit of rain water that leaked into it. The manager of the wendys came out to check on us as he saw and heard our panic. I called gm/saab this morning and the rep made me out to be a liar, she couldnt believe that a fire actually occured. I told her i have the switch housing and it is clear as day that the plastic didnt melt and the acual metal tip of the wire melt due to smoke or just a heat. I see that there is a recall on 2008 saab 97x driver module but not my year or the passenger switch. The rep had me so upset i forgot to get her name and file a complaint so when im done on this post i am going to call back and have them look up my file and lodge a complaint. Also there is a recall for 2008 97x headlight module and of course my headlights just stopped working out of the blue, i replaced the bulbs from autozone to no avail that is how i found out about the second recall. Im upset because i have 3 kids in college and 1 in 10 grade and am not in a financial position to replace any of the defective factory parts especially after a fire in my vehicle. Now i am forced to not have functioning passenger window or lock or heated/memory seat.

1. Vehicle stalls/loses power while in motion at a low rate of speed. Problem can't be identified by 3 independent mechanics. One mechanic said replace fuse box and hope it solves the issue. 2. Vehicle has electrical surges causes a multitude of electrical issues. So far: fire in fuse box burning out the low-beam relay, audio interference through the speakers (crackling) when turn signals, or radio are playing, remote access fails intermittently, replaced 2 bosch batteries, bad alternator, 3 air-ride suspension compressors, replace turn signal, brake, and head lights annually, low to no power while idling, and electronics not working intermittently (power seats, heated seats, air compressor, power windows). One mechanic said that there are faint plumes of smoke coming off of the fuse box.
Manufacturer: general motors llc mfr's report date: aug 15, 2012 nhtsa campaign id number: 12v406000 nhtsa action number: ea12004 component: visibility, power window devices and controls was advised in 2015 that the drivers door module was under recall as a fire hazard. It was replaced. The replacement module started on fire. The local dealer blamed 'rain water getting in it.' i ordered a brand new ddm that has never seen the elements or been installed in a car ' and it has the same corrosion that caused my fire! See pic. To add insult to injury the local gmc and chevy dealers both say 'oh that's a saab, we can't program that.' the nearest dealer willing to do this work is zimbrick in madison wisconsin. It's 150 miles away. They're stating they can't do the work a second time under the call. There was nothing wrong with my window switch before they did the recall work, and supposedly the 'superior' fixed part in fact caught on fire. If this was a trailblazer or an envoy they'd do the work but because it's a saab they're being stupid and saying they can't work on saab's. It's the same thing. Bottom line: the recall work does not mitigate the fire hazard and brand new replacement modules have the same corrosion that gm blames on 'water getting into the ddm.' i challenge that narrative and believe all these vehicles may still be a fire hazard

I have a 2007 saab 9-7x with a faulty fuel gauge. There are many articles related to this problem and i would like to submit my complaint. The fuel gauge fails immediately when i start the engine. After several minutes, it then reads erratically. If you could reply on how i am to take care of this with gm, it would be appreciated. My vehicle has 102,000 miles on it and i am the original owner. *tr

Fuel gauge does not display the correct fuel level. Fuel gauge will indicate full when tank is empty, or empty when tank is full. Has caused a check engine light on numerous occasions. *tr
Erratic fuel gauge. At times gauge will read empty when tank is near full or will read full when fuel tank is half full. *tr
Less than 100 miles after the manufacturer warranty ended, after filling the gas tank, the gauge dropped to "empty" and the gas light came on. After driving for several miles the gauge started fluctuating between full and empty, and seemed to be accurate after a while. This continued for a few weeks, but eventually stopped fluctuating and now always shows empty, regardless of the amount of fuel in the tank. *tt
The first time i noticed a problem i was at the gas station. My fuel gauge indicated the vehicle was close to empty and needed gas. The vehicle has a 22-gal tank, but the pump stopped at 10 gallons. It would not take any more. I thought that was odd. I had never had any other problems with the vehicle. Since the problem started the vehicle will only take 10-12 gallons of gas. My husband thinks there is more gas in the tank, but i'm not taking any chances. I reset the trip meter to zero each time i get gas. My vehicle gets approx. 18 mpg. I used to fill up at about 330 miles on the trip meter. One day, upon getting in the vehicle, the low fuel light was on. The vehicle had been driven approximately 216 miles. The gas hand came up to half a tank and then quickly began to drop to empty. The miles range (how many miles you need until you get gas) just starts quickly ticking down the miles. This has happened several times. Now when i get near 216 miles driven i get gas. There is no stalling or anything like that. I have not run out of gas. I get gas immediately when the gauge starts dropping and the miles range starts ticking down. I make sure i hit the trip meter so i don't run out of gas. It sounds like a gas sensor or something like that. I will take it to the dealership next week to see what is wrong. I believe there needs to be a recall for this item. Can you help? This problem started around june 10, 2011. *tr
On numerous occasions while driving my vehicle, it has registered half a tank to a quarter tank of fuel. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 136,000.
My front windshield has cracked due to stress and temperature. The automaker is trying to claim that the break is due to stone impact. This is not true. The fuel gauge on my vehicle became faulty. The meter would work only till half tank and after that the guage would go straight down to e or empty. Fuel sensor recall
Fuel gauge stopped reporting actual level of fuel in the tank about 2 years ago. Guage remains pointed at 1/4 full tank level at all times. Forced to keep track of fuel level by resetting the milage tracker at each tank fill-up. When miles reach around 250 its time to find a gas station to fill up again. Have run out of gas 5-10 times in the last 2 years. Several of the sudden "out-of-gas" events were also false. Vehicle had gas, but engine stalled as though it had run out of gas. Car was pulled to the side of interstate and coasted to nearby gas station.
My fuel gauge read empty after i filled up my tank. After driving for a few miles my service engine soon light came on. It will spontaneously read full, then empty then partially full then near empty etc etc. In researching this topic this seems to be a well documented issue for gm and it appears in the luck of the draw now my vehicle joins the large number of vehicles with this issue. I don't see a recall for this in my research for my 2007 97-x. Is there a broader scope recall?? Some sites indicate a willingness of gm to pay half the cost?? Seems odd that if this is something that is common among gm vehicles why would gm not honor a repair of a known faulty design??
After filling up at the gas station a few days ago, i started the car and i got the low fuel light and warning ding. I turned the car off, restarted it and it showed i had a full tank of gas. As i drove to work (less the 2 miles) the gauge quickly went back down to empty and the light/ding came on. Over the next few days it did this constantly so i had it looked at today. $500!! To fix. *tr
For the past two year i have been getting intermediate false fuel readings. The gauge would read empty or close to it. One time it stated i had more gas then i really did, causing me to run out of gas on the freeway. As time went on, the issue became more frequent. It is becoming a dangerous issue. *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2006 saab 9-7x. While driving, the fuel gauge failed to display the proper fuel level and the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel level sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 55,000.
After fueling up my tank my gas light stayed on along with my engine light. I took it to a local auto parts store to get it scanned and it ended up being my fuel sensor. The needle floats between full and empty as i drive down the road. I have a family of 8 and 5 of us able to drive. I would like my vehicle to work properly so one of my family members do not become stranded because of this well know faulty fuel sensor. (which seems to be a manufacturing flaw) i work with others that had the same issue but with related vehicles all with the gmt360 platform and had their sensors replaced which general motors covered but i am wondering why the '06 saab 97x does not have a recall. *tr
I stopped to get gas today and filled my tank all the way up. Upon re-starting the vehicle that fuel gauge said it was completely empty. I drove a few miles and the check engine light came on. After 40 miles or so, the fuel gauge went back to full but the check engine light stayed on. Then for the next 10-15 miles the fuel gauge jumped back and forth from empty to full. The check engine light never went off. I am worried it is going to shut down on my on the highway like some other people have said! This scares me... And it only just turned over 60k miles today! Gm please step in and fix this problem before people start dying... Seriously! This is dangerous and i am nervous to drive my saab now. *tr
Fuel gauge registers improperly and swings from full to empty. Low fuel warning even when full

"takata recall" purchased from eastchester chrysler jeep dodgr dealership in bronx, ny 10486 , on feb. 28, 2015, engine light illuminated on dashboard indicating a possible problem. I took it back approximately 7x to the dealer for repair and approximately 8 additional times at other mechanics. Unfortunately, light continues today. Both headlights were problem; drivers side beginning first dimming very low. Several weeks later, the passenger side headlight began to have problems as well. Eventually it became a necessity to become an expensive out-of- pocket expense. Finally, the stability check light continuously comes on and off making it necessary to stop and turn off and restart vehicle as suggested by dealer mechanic advice. Allinformation described is verified with documents.
The service stabili trac light keeps coming on i also had a 06 trailblazer same thing paid 300.00 to fix it and kept doing it.

While traveling through residential area at speed slowing down to turn vehicle began to stall i heard a loud whining the vehicle began jerking, speeding up, slowly down. This problem has continued through various speeds. I am afraid for my family and public if this happens in a parking lot or interstates. *tr *js
Takata recall i bought a 2006 saab 97x n i have problems w my hid low beams the left side just wont light up n wen im drivin somtimes my drivin lights go on n off while im on the highway ! Ive had the bulbs changed twice n still the passenger low beam wont light up !!!
Hid headlights flicker and then turn off. No rhyme or reason; cold weather and hot weather. Headlights will eventually flicker and turn off. I can manually flip the headlights switch off and then on again and they will come back on. Once they come back on, they can stay on for another few seconds or minutes, but they will eventually flicker and turn off again. Most times it's just one headlight at a time because i don't give it enough time before turning it back on before the second one goes out. Both have gone out before at the same time. In my 12 mile route to work in the morning, i may have to turn my headlights on again about 25 times at its worst. Sometimes they will stay on and sometimes it won't even flicker at all. No rhyme or reason. It's dangerous for the obvious reason but also people think you are flashing your lights at them. Can cause road rage in people'so what's worse? Driving dangerously with no headlights or someone getting angry b/c you keep flashing your headlights at them? Dangerous no matter how you look at it. Also police may think you are trying to warn people about them by flashing my headlights! As far as i can tell right now, it's just the low beam hids, not the high beams and not the yellow daytime running lights. Voltage has been tested and they say it's fine at 14 volts for both headlights even though they were flickering/turned off while being tested. Shop wants me to replace hid headlights altogether which is over $300 not including labor. Has been happening intermittently since i bought the car used in 2009. Is getting worse as mileage goes up it seems. 87,000 miles as of 12/23/2015. Purchased the car in feb.2009 with 20,000 miles. Lights will flicker in idle or while driving at any speed. Also loud buzzing from back speakers at times and stabilitrak light comes on and then will go off randomly.
In march 2014, while operating the vehicle, the warning bell sounded, and an engine light (with down arrow) illuminated. The driver information center displayed "stabilitrak off", and the car immediately slowed from 45mph to 15mph. The speed of the vehicle would not pass 25mph, and there wasn't even enough power to climb a small hill. After deploying the hazard indicator, and pulling over, the engine was shut off. Upon waiting 2-3 minutes and restarting the engine, the problem did not recur. Since then, the problem has recurred at least 3 dozen times, and it is becoming more frequent. This fault can easily have catastrophic results. *tr
While driving home our headlights flickered and turned off. I was able to pull over and restart the vehicle and the headlights came back on. Once driving again, they flickered and the passenger side headlight went out. I was able to drive the vehicle home with the one light (luckily). When i went to replace the headlight, it was back on again. I checked all connections and was unable to find the cause. A couple of weeks later the stabila-trac system light and air bag light came on and went off (5 min period). A couple of days later the steering locked up and would jump, we brought it to the saab dealer and they had to replace the awd actuator needed to be replaced ($788). We replaced it and the steering and awd system appeared to work fine. Two days later the airbag light and stabila-trac system light came on again and went off. Dealer was unable to pull up the codes (not logging codes?). A month later while driving, the windshield wipers would come on and turn off on their own and when their on the washer sprayers for the headlights and windshield turn on their own. This vehicle has major safety issues due to electrical issues and should be investigated. This vehicle has become unsafe and untrustworthiness. *tr

The vehicle suddenly slowed down. The contact was only able to drive 25-30 mph. The vehicle was diagnosed at an auto parts store. The code indicated that the throttle body was the cause of the failure. The failure was intermittent at first but progressed and was constant. The part for repair was backordered. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 68,000 and the current mileage was 68,500.

I got a trouble code for cylinder #7 misfire. It is the lifters going out due to the afm or dod, whatever gm calls it. The system shutting down the 8 cylinder to 4 cylinders. $3000 job for something that i'm sure gm is very aware of. These 5.3s with this afm will have this problem. It's just a matter of when.
While operating my vehicle at approx. 70 mph on an interstate, my passenger bumped the ignition key, located between the gear shifter and center console. My vehicle shut off while traveling down the hwy, and it happened other times, too. I've had the same problems with the driver side door module, which has completely stopped working. It has always had problems after getting only slightly wet. I've had problems with front passenger window, possibly caused by the same problem, and every door is likely affected. Since the driver side is used most frequently, the problem just becomes obvious on that one. The ignition is subject to the same problems. My vehicle stopped working after leaving the sunroof open mistakenly. The vehicle wouldn't start for 24 hrs, and the turn signal has since had problems with flashing too quickly. The design obviously lacks basic attempts to keep water away from its electrical components. I have a recurring problem with a service stabilitrak light intermittently going on and off. It was taken back for service several times, but the problem was either never resolved, or continues to recur. I don''t know whether stabilitrak is or was functioning at any point, or if it's just the light. Around the same time, the cruise control started to only work intermittently and then completely stopped working. In addition, there is something very wrong with the abs system when attempting to stop while traveling at low speeds. Although it happens consistently, i would have died or been seriously injured if i hadn't downshifted and pulled my e-brake in order to finally get the vehicle to stop. Yet, the 9-7x wasn't included in the recall gm issued for the very same problem on other vehicles. There is seriously something wrong with this vehicle. It is a death trap waiting to happen. *tr
Was driving down side street, reached for something in passenger seat, drew my hand back making very gentle contact with ignition key in center console and car shut off. I hardly touched the key. This second time in early june, though i hit it with my cup (ice tea from mcdonalds). Then this weekend it happened again. It is very easy to bump it with your arm and have it shut off. I called gmc and they informed me that they wouldn't fix it, even though to me it seems like the same issue as with their other cars that are being recalled for the same reason. I think it should be recalled, and suspect that the ignition is the same that is in the gmc envoy, trailblazer, etc. Also, the 2007 was recalled, and i think the 2008 should be as well. My car is available for someone to inspect it anytime if you would like to see how easy it is for it to happen. *tr

Engine light with apparent cylinder misfires on cylinders 1, 4, 6 or 7 - believed to be possible afm lifter concern. Dealership wants to rip entire engine apart and claims 28-30 hours of labor at approximately $3500. This does not include parts (quoted $7500 total). They allege camshaft needs to be replaced. Gm willing to extend 15% discount but has essentially declined that vehicle has a mechanical and/or defective part. Lifter appears to be defective. Vehicle has 60k miles. *tr

Can a Saab 9-7X tow? Towing & payload
As an SUV, the Saab 9-7X is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package, on a curb weight near 4,720 lb.
What sets your 9-7X's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
