Title law is written state by state, and the thresholds differ enough to move these numbers on their own: some states brand a car when repairs pass 75% of its value, others at 60%, a few leave it to the insurer's judgement. Does a clean title mean the car was never in an accident?
No, and this is the common misreading. A title only records insurance write-offs. A crash repaired out of pocket, or one under the owner's deductible, never reaches the title at all. For collision history you need the accident record — the title is a floor, not a guarantee.
Can a clean title be faked?
The document is hard to forge, but the brand can be lost legitimately-looking: a car written off in one state, repaired and re-registered in another can come back with clean paperwork. Checking the VIN rather than the paper is the only way to see the original record.
