The recall that never quite ended
The Takata airbag inflator recall is the largest in automotive history, covering tens of millions of vehicles across nearly every major brand. The defect is nasty in a specific way: the inflator can rupture and send metal fragments into the cabin. Age and humidity make it worse, which means the risk grows rather than fades.
That last detail is why this still matters on a used car today. A vehicle that's been sitting unrepaired for years is more dangerous now than when the recall was issued, not less. And plenty are still out there — recall completion rates never reach 100%, especially on older cars that have changed hands several times.
