A catalogue against a shortlist
BMW's 104 models cover saloons, estates, coupés, convertibles, four SUV families, electric variants and performance versions of most of them — each with its own designation. Attention spreads thin across the range.
RAM sells pickups and vans. Ten nameplates absorb 780 lookups, and each one is checked five times as often as a typical BMW.
Neither approach is better. They're different bets: BMW covers every niche and asks buyers to navigate it, RAM covers few niches and owns them.
What it means for a used buyer
Wide ranges mean thin data per model. With 104 models, many BMW variants have very few examples for sale at any moment — and we found 61% of models have under 100 listings across all 37 model years. Valuing a rare variant is guesswork.
Narrow ranges mean deep comparables. A RAM 1500 has thousands of listings, so pricing is precise and negotiation has a factual basis.
Parts and expertise follow concentration. A model shared across a huge production run has more independent specialists and more remanufactured parts than a niche variant of a broad range.
The distribution of attention is stranger still
Across all brands, lookups follow a power law rather than anything resembling an average. 259 VINs — 0.9% of the total — account for 41.3% of every check ever run. The most-checked vehicle is a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado at 9,497 lookups.
Meanwhile 8,981 VINs were checked exactly once and never again. Most cars get one look; a tiny number get returned to obsessively.
And 3.0% of what people check isn't a car at all — 375 motorcycles, 357 heavy trucks and 172 RVs, spanning 260 makes, 120 of which appear a single time.
What to do with it
On a broad-range brand, verify the exact variant. Trim and body style drive price heavily when comparables are thin, and listings describe them loosely. A VIN check decodes what a car actually is.
On a narrow-range brand, use the depth. With thousands of comparables, an out-of-line price is visible immediately.
