A VIN check gets run once if someone is confirming a fact and repeatedly if they're deliberating. Across 28,850 decoded VINs, I worked out the average number of lookups per vehicle by brand.

Tesla is four times Ford

465 Tesla VINs generated 19,475 lookups. Ford's 4,050 VINs generated 45,842 — more in total, far fewer per vehicle.

The gap isn't about volume. It's about how long people spend deciding.

Why some cars get checked over and over

Unfamiliarity. Most people buying a used Tesla have never owned an electric car. There's no intuition to fall back on — no sense of what mileage is high, what a good price looks like, or which faults matter. So they check, think, and check again.

Price concentration. A used Tesla's value sits largely in its battery, which you cannot inspect. That's a large sum riding on something invisible, and uncertainty produces repeat visits.

Fewer independent opinions. A used F-150 can be assessed by any mechanic in the country. Finding someone to give a second opinion on an EV is harder, so the buyer does more of the work themselves.

BMW at 18 is the same effect, differently caused. Buyers know a used German car can be expensive to run and check more carefully before committing.

Repeat checking is rational when the car is unfamiliar. If you can't tell a good example from a bad one by looking, the record is the only thing that can.

It's equally worth doing on the cars you think you know. The brands with the lowest check rates are the ones with the largest recall volumes and the deepest used inventories, which means more variance between individual cars, not less.
