FISKER

What is Fisker?

Henrik Fisker founded Fisker in 2007, headquartered in Manhattan Beach, USA. Despite the USA badge, 100% of the Fisker cars in our records were assembled in France — the country on the boot lid and the country under the car are rarely the same thing. 4 models tracked (2011–2026).

Who makes Fisker

Fisker Group, Inc. (formerly Fisker Inc.) was an American electric vehicle manufacturer founded by Danish-American designer Henrik Fisker in 2007. The original Fisker Automotive (2007-2013) produced the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid sedan from 2011 to 2012 before declaring bankruptcy. Henrik Fisker founded the modern Fisker Inc. in 2016, which went public via SPAC merger in October 2020 at a valuation of approximately $2.9 billion. The modern Fisker Ocean SUV was Fisker's primary product, produced under contract by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria starting in late 2022. The Fisker Pear (subcompact crossover), Fisker Alaska (pickup truck) and Fisker Ronin (4-door grand-touring sport car) were announced but not produced before Fisker Group filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June 2024. Fisker is currently working through bankruptcy reorganization, with American Lease and the Magna assets sale providing limited recovery for unsecured creditors. Fisker is currently in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and not actively producing vehicles. Recall data for Fisker Karma (original 2011-2012 production) and Fisker Ocean (2022-2024 production) is reported to NHTSA. ForCar.org maintains Fisker VIN data despite the brand's current insolvency.

Henrik Fisker, a Danish-American designer with credits including the BMW Z8, Aston Martin DB9 and BMW M1 Hommage, founded the original Fisker Automotive in 2007 in California. The 2011 Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid was the brand's first product, with approximately 2,000 units delivered before A123 Systems battery supplier issues and a federal loan repayment dispute forced bankruptcy in 2013. Henrik Fisker re-founded Fisker Inc. in 2016 with new EV plans, going public via SPAC in October 2020. The Fisker Ocean delivered first units in early 2023 but production troubles, contract disputes with Magna Steyr, and 2024 financial pressures forced Chapter 11 in June 2024.

Where Fisker cars are actually built

A badge says where a company is registered, not where its cars were bolted together. The first three characters of any VIN — the world manufacturer identifier — say the second thing, and that is what we counted: 855 vehicles on record, 1 distinct manufacturer codes.

How to read a Fisker VIN

Every Fisker built since 1981 carries a unique 17-character VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). It encodes where and when the vehicle was made, its engine and body — here's what each part means:

FIG.05·How to Read a Fisker VIN
1–3 · WMI514
4–8 · VDSCM826
9 · Check5
10 · YearR
11 · PlantA
12–17 · Serial004352
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Fisker and the country it was built in (real Fisker codes below).
  • VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled it.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

The remaining digits — engine (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard. Our VIN lookup reads every position for you — engine code, model year, assembly plant and country of build.

Who owns Fisker, and what you get

Fisker is independent, USA-owned. Fisker historically positioned in the premium EV segment against Tesla Model Y, Ford Mustang Mach-E and other mainstream EV crossovers. The Ocean Sport, Ocean Ultra and Ocean Extreme trims spanned $40,000-$70,000 starting prices. The brand's aspiration to compete on design (per Henrik Fisker's automotive design heritage) and contract-manufacturing strategy (avoiding capital-intensive in-house production) were central differentiators that ultimately did not generate sufficient operational results to sustain the company.
