How to read a Isuzu Ascender VIN — every digit explained
Every Isuzu Ascender carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Ascender.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Ascender VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Equipment:other:labels
What's wrong. Certain trucks and sport utility vehicles fail to conform to the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 110, "tire selection and rims." these vehicles were shipped with tire and loading information labels listing an inacccurate vehicle capacity weight.
Risk. A misprinted label could lead to improper vehicle loading specifications or tire inflation which could result in a tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.

Steering:hydraulic Power Assist:hose, Piping, And Connections
What's wrong. Certain passenger vehicles may have been built with a power steering hose that is not to specification. Under extreme steering maneuvers, such as turning the steering wheel fully to the left or right while braking, the hose may fracture and leak fluid.
Risk. If this were to occur, power steering assist would be lost and increased steering effort would be required. On vehicles equipped with hydro-boost power brakes, it could also result in loss of power brake assist and increased braking effort would be required. If the power steering fluid spray were to spray onto hot engine parts, an engine compartment fire could occur.
Fix. Dealers will inspect the power steering hose(s) for two suspect date codes and replace them if required. The recall will begin on october 14, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, buick at 1-866-608-8080, cadillac at 1-866-982-2339, isuzu at 1-800-255-6727, or hummer at 1-800-732-5493.

Visibility:windshield
What's wrong. Certain sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 212, 'windshield mounting.' the windshield urethane bead may not have adhered to the body in certain areas during the cure process.
Risk. If a crash occurs, the windshield may not be retained, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
Fix. Dealers will replace the windshield free of charge. The recall began on march 10, 2005. Owners may contact buick at 1-866-608-8080, chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, or gmc at 1-866-996-9463.
2004 Isuzu Ascender recalls 1
Exterior Lighting:turn Signal
What's wrong. On certain trucks and sport utility vehicles, the driver wishing to signal a turn by moving the directional signal lever, (up or down) may cause the front marker/turn lights and rear turn lights to flash in a manner similar to hazard warning, rather than flashing on the desired side only.
Risk. The driver may not be able to clearly signal their intentions to turn, change travel lanes, or potentially warn others of an impaired vehicle operating condition increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix. Dealers will replace the suspect flasher modules with a new flasher module designed with sealed relays and more durable contact material inside of the relays free of charge. The recall began on august 4, 2005. Isuzu began mailing owner letters on august 4, 2005. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, isuzu at 1-800-255-6727, buick at 1-866-608-8080, and oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537.

Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch
What's wrong. Certain sport utility vehicles have a rear side closure latch that may not latch or unlatch due to corrosion caused by road splash, such as water and road salt. These vehicles were originally sold in or currently registered in the following states: connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia.
Risk. If the door is not latched properly and it goes unnoticed, it may open while the vehicle is in motion. If an unbelted occupant fell out of the vehicle, personal injuries could occur.
Fix. Dealers will install a seal along the lower part of the rocker panel to prevent intrusion of corrosive material, and inspect the rear side closure latches. Functional latches will be cleaned and lubricated. Non-functioning latches will be replaced. The recall began on february 24, 2006. Owners may contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, gmc at 1-866-996-9463, or isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.
Visibility:windshield Wiper/washer
What's wrong. Certain sport utility vehicles have windshield wiper systems that will not turn on, cease operation while in use, fail to turn off/on by themselves (moisture sensitive wiper system), or have continuous windshield washer pump operation because the presence of water within the wiper modules can either cause a short circuit or can lead to the corrosion of components within the module.
Risk. Depending on the occurrence and weather situation, driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a crash.
Fix. Dealers will repair the windshield wiper system assembly. The recall began on july 15, 2004. Owners should contact isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.
Power Train:automatic Transmission
What's wrong. Certain sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 114, "theft protection." these vehicles are equipped with a mechanical override that could allow the ignition key to be removed with the shift lever in a position other than park. In addition, these vehicles have an override that can allow the transmission to be shifted out of park with the ignition in the off position.
Risk. These overrides are not permitted unless the vehicle has a locking steering column.
Fix. Dealers will eliminate these conditions by disabling the overrides. Owner notification began june 13, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.
Equipment:other:owners/service/other Manual
What's wrong. Certain sport utility vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 225, "child restraint anchorage system." the owner's manual does not explain the meaning of the location symbols for the lower universal anchorage system.
Risk. This does not comply with the standard.
Fix. Owners will be provided with a supplement for their owner's manual. It describes and shows the location symbols for the child restraint anchors that are located in the vehicle. Owner notification began august 15, 2003. Owners should contact isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

Cluster panel does not work. The low beam lights have stopped working regularly whether stationary or driving.. They work intermittently causing the use of high beams. It has become a night time driving safety issue. Car will turn off in the middle of driving causing my daughter to have to pull over for safety.
Vehicle headlights work very erratically both when vehicle is parked or in motion. Low-beam lights will go off on a moment's notice and only high-beam lights will work. More recently, even the high-bean lights have been acting up and turning off. Headlights sockets were replaced at some point but problem persists. This condition is extremely dangerous, especially when driving at night and all the headlights go out.
Abs and brake warning lights and warning chime comes on every time we drive the car. The chime will go off after about 15 sec. Of chiming. Lights and warning on the "readout" stay on. Our mechanic said its the abs module and gm doesn't have any. They have been on backorder for at least 8 months. He said it's a problem with "like" gm vehicles also. This is a safety hazard. Don't know to take it seriously or not. Don't know if our brakes are going to work. We need this fixed and we can't even get a part. Help!! *tr
Speedometer showing different speed than actual. Car will show it is going 50 mph and will be actually going 60mph. Car will show going 45mph and will be going around 56mph. Took to mechanic and he said was probably stepper motor. Estimated cost to fix is $365.00. 2nd problem i've had with dash!! *tr

The low beams on my headlights will go out without warning while driving at night. My daytime running lights also will turn off without warning and turn back on but this is not as much of a safety issue as when it happens during nighttime driving. Sometimes my headlights will not work from the moment i start my car but most of the time they shut off during driving. I can switch the headlights to high beams and they typically work fine. Only once have i had both high and low beams out at the same time. When that happened i parked my car and let it sit. When i started my car after about 30 min to an hour both high and low beams were working again. My headlights will go out while i'm driving in the city, in the countryside, on the highway or on residential streets, after driving for a while or even when i first start my vehicle after it had been sitting for several hours. The reason for my headlights spontaneously going out is unknown. The part that causing the problem is unknown. It does, however, seem to be very similar to issues that has caused gm to do a recall on other gm vehicles which includes 2006-2009 (?) isuzu ascenders but does not include my 2004 isuzu ascender. The first time that i experienced this was back in january 2017. The last time that i experienced this was last night, may 4, 2017.
While my wife was driving the vehicle both lowbeam headlights just went out. She was forced to drive with highbeams to get home. After replacing both lights and checking all fuses i am at a loss of what the problem is. We cannot drive this vehicle at night due to safety concerns. *tr
While driving one night, my left headlight went out, first the dim, then the bright. My wife and i both smelled a smell like rubber burning, so i stopped the car and checked under the hood to detect the origin of the smell, but to no avail. Not much later that same night, my right headlight also burned out. Luckily, we were only 1 mile from our house and limped home. When i checked under the hood the next day, i found that the electrical connections to both headlights had burned and melted the wires at the point where they attach to the back of the headlight assembly. Has this been a common problem for other ascender owners? *tr
The radio, anti theft device, remote door locks and tail lights did not function properly in the consumer's 2004 isuzu ascender. *ts the vehicle has been at the service dealer since dec 16, 2005 and the consumer was not given a time frame for repairs. The technician indicated that the problem seemed to be with the multi-relay and electrical system. *nm
Heater/ac fan kept going out. Was told it was relay switch. After several replacements, was told it was a fault in the ignition. Ignition was replaced. Fan now works. Now headlights go out intermittently. Tech's can't figure out why. *tr
At night while driving the low beams headlights turn off and after a few minutes turn back on. The high beams work when the lights go out and we have to turn them on to have headlamps. The daytime running lights don't seem to be affected by the problem during the day. Problem happens only at night. *tr
While driving at night the dim head lights go off for no reason, this happens every two days or so , so i have to drive with bright lights (which blinds on coming traffic) on for about six or seven miles before the low beams start working again. Dealership can't seem to duplicate problem, so nothing has been done yet. *tr

I have a 2004 isuzu ascender. My check engine light came on so i took it to a dealer to have it checked out. I was told that the car had a fuel thank inlet fracture. A service bulletin was released but no recall. I bought this car brand new, it will cost me $2178.33 +tax to have it repaired.after doing some research i have found other owners with the same problem. I think that something should b done about this. I contacted an authorized dealer and my car is not in the recall models. I think that this a manufacture' problem and it should be taken care of beofre something serious happens

I purchased a new 2003 isuzu ascender in sept. 2003. When the vehicle had approximately 500 miles on the odometer the service engine soon (ses) light came on. We took the suv to an isuzu dealer where i was told that i had improperly put the gas cap on and that is why the ses light came on. Within a week the ses light came on again. My husband took the car back to the dealer where the vehicle was thoroughly checked and the isuzu dealer found a leak in the fuel tank. The tank was replaced after a lengthy wait for the proper parts. We thought the problem was solved. July 2, 2007 we received a recall notice from isuzu stating that the ses light may come on after fueling and that you may smell a fuel odor. We brought the suv to an isuzu dealer on july 5. The service staff found 2 leaks in the tank. It is now july 13, 2007 and the car is still at the dealership because they are unable to get a tank for the suv. The dealership will not allow us to drive the suv off the lot because of the potential risk of it catching fire or exploding.

Recall has been issued on faulty gas tank. Had car inspected by isuzu facility 2/4/16 and new part(s) ordered. Cannot get any information as to when part will be in and my car repaired. In the meantime, driving with faulty, gas-leaking, probably dangerous car. Gm apparently not communicating with isuzu and parts not getting produced.
Fuel tank has leaking seals, which is causing fuel to leak and the smell of fuel into cabin area of vehicle and vehicle rejected during state inspection. Part not available until after may.took it to repair facility, was told it was unsafe to drive then was told to come pick up the vehicle. Isuzu unwilling to offer any assistance
My transmission has had to be fix 3 times 2 of those time me and my 5 children where driving on the freeway and my car stopped picking up speed and we had to pull to the side of the rode. My back vents for my a/c do not work, the back door opens all the time one time it opened and all our groceries fell out and when i try to pump gas into my car it would take forever the pump would stop like it was full but now it just spills out and my car smells like gas so bad on the inside i can't even drive it anymore. It's one thing after another and i have only had this car for 2 years and it's one thing after another.
My car has smelled of gas and i have been told there is a fracture in my fuel tank inlet check valve. This has been a problem with the 7 passenger ascender but they are doing nothing with the 5 passenger ascender though it is the exact same part that is faulty. I have contacted isuzu and am taking into their service center but i want this complaint on record in case something should happen such as my car exploding. The fumes inside the car are so noxious they are making me sick and i have to drive with the windows down. *tr
Had check engine light come on and had checked out. Code brought up said gas cap problem. Replaced gas cap and went away for a week. Had problem come back and asked mechanic and said it was a common problem on these vehicles. Mechanic also said it could be connection to fuel tank from gas fill tube. Had checked out and was ok. Put on new gas cap again and went away for another week and came back. Done with it. Tired of putting money into a problem that won't go away. *tr
There has been ungoing electrical issues since buying this vehicle new. The headlights have stopped working and there is an intermittent problem with the lights and the internal chime. Sometimes the lights don't come on or the chimes can not be heard and then it is working properly again. The engine in the vehicle ihad to be orepalced just before it went to 60000 miles so, it has an 2005 engine. This engine has a hard revv when shifting gears. There are gas fumes coming into the cabin. The vehicle has been taken to the mechanic several times and they have not been able to find the leak. I don't live in the salt belt area. I live in northern fl and this is not the only place that the vehicle has been, but it has not been where there are salted roads like the nort east and midatlantic. Request your assistance. *tr
Continuous gas smell in and around automobile when starting the engine. Engine light came on in jan 2013 although the smell has been present for many years. Took auto to repair shop and discovered that their was a sizeable crack at the opening of the gas tank. Around 1,500 dollars later a new gas tank, new fuel pump assembly, i find it hard to believe there is no recall on this part from gm, especially since searching the internet and discovering how many have reported this same exact issue and the scary thought that the car could have blown up and any time. A class action suit needs to be filed against gm. *tr

Help!! *tr
I own a 2004 isuzu ascender. There has been a host of problems that i have had to deal with in the minimal 10 months that i have owned the vehicle. Two of the problems have yet to receive any type of fix from the local isuzu service center. The first problem was the belt screaming every day. I took the vehicle in three times for the belt and they finally fixed it. The second problem is all four door windows. Debris consistently makes its way into the door and any time i roll down or roll up my windows my windows get severly scratched. I addressed this issue with the service center and they said there is nothing they can do about it and that it is not a product malfunction. I have never had a vehicle do this and nor do i know anyone that has had a similar issue. Lastly and most importantly, my family and i were on a routine drive back from new hampshire. The conditions were clear and the roads were of typical new england repair. A vehicle pulled out in front of ours and in reaction i applied heavy, not excessive, pressure to the break pedal. The petal started to click, most likely the abs, but nothing kicked in to stop my vehicle. When i say nothing, it was like i never stepped on the break at all. I had to swerve in to the other lane of traffic to avoid a collision. The next day i took the vehicle in to be looked at and the service department sent myself and a mechanic out on a road test in hopes to duplicate the malfunction. I did not have any real luck with duplicating the malfunction but i know it exists. It has happened to my wife three times and myself once. The service department said there is nothing they can do right now and to wait for a gm certified mechanic to have the opportunity to look at my vehicle. The breaks have gone unchecked since the latest incident and my confidence in the safety of the vehicle wavers more and more every day.

I was driving on 1-88w bound on 2-1-2008, my car started to make squeaking noise and very hard to drive. Luckily, 2 blocks from rt 31 exit, there was a firestone auto care, the mechanic was able to determined that the front axel broke and it is affecting the differential. The car was then towed to isuzu dealer in elgin the next day.the mechanic from bigger isuzu called monday, 2-5-07, claiming that the front differential need to be replaced because of lack of gear oil. Cost--$4,800 to be repaired. The car mileage was 77,000 miles. I called isuzu to complained and they said, they won't be responsible for the repair. I went to nhtsa, there was a technical service bulletin regarding 2003 isuzu ascender power train-drive differential. Nhtsa item #10016589 and service bulletin #0507002. The 2003 isuzu ascender is the same vehicle as a chevrolet trailblazer and gmc envoy. At approximately 51,000 miles and out of warranty. The fan clutch motor had to be replaced. I had to assume full payment to replace it. Now, the truck sounded like the undercarriagewas rattling. Had it to a mechanic, and the mechanic stated that i must have been the sway bar links replaced in the vehicle. Upon further discussion the mechanic determine d that he had to replace them on the trailblazer , and the service manager had to have them replaced on the envoy, both with the same platform. This seemed to be a design problem that gm and its affiliates should be responsible for replacing. *ak
