How to read a Isuzu Axiom VIN — every digit explained

Every Isuzu Axiom carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Axiom.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Axiom VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.

Fuel System, Gasoline:delivery:fuel Pump05V466000

What's wrong. Certain sport utility vehicles that have been exposed to fuel contaminated with silicon may develop small pin holes in the fuel pump feed port. Silicon has been identified in the fuel systems of affected vehicles and in certain fuel available in the region of tyler, texas. This recall will be launched for vehicles registered in texas and the four surrounding states: oklahoma, arkansas, new mexico and louisiana.

Risk. A fuel leak could lead to a vehicle fire.

Fix. For vehicles registered in the states identified above, dealers will provide a new cover over the existing feed port on the fuel pump or, if the existing feed port has already been damaged, dealers will install a new fuel pump that is equipped with the new cover. The new cover will be made of a different material. The recall began on november 25, 2005. Owners may contact isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

What's wrong. Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America, Inc (Isuzu) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Rodeo and Axiom, and 2003 Rodeo Sport vehicles that were originally sold in, or are currently registered in, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion near the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link.

Risk. The corrosion may allow the bracket to detach from the frame, impacting vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix. Isuzu will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. For vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. In the event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be sufficient, Isuzu will offer to repurchase the vehicle for an amount based on the Kelley Blue Book "Private Party" price. All inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. For vehicles older than 10 years, Isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an Isuzu service facility dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued, after that time owners will be charged for the repairs. Suspension:rear10V436000

What's wrong. Isuzu is recalling certain model year 1998-2002 isuzu rodeo and model year 2002 isuzu axiom vehicles, and honda is recalling certain 1998-2002 honda passport vehicles, that were originally sold, or are currently registered, in the states of maine, new hampshire, vermont, massachusetts, rhode island, connecticut, new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, delaware, maryland, the district of columbia, west virginia, ohio, indiana, michigan, illinois, wisconsin, minnesota, iowa, missouri, and kentucky. Vehicles that have experienced sustained exposure to highly corrosive materials used in some jurisdictions for road deicing purposes may experience excessive corrosion in the vicinity of the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link prior to the time that such corrosion would normally be expected.

Risk. Excessive corrosion may result in the left or right rear suspension lower link bracket becoming detached from the frame, which can affect vehicle handling and potentially cause a crash.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. For vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. In the rare event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be appropriate, a repurchase offer will be extended to the vehicle's owner. All inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. For vehicles older than 10 years, isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an isuzu service facility, or honda dealer (as applicable), dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued. Air Bags:frontal02V213000

What's wrong. On certain sport utility vehicles, the passenger-side air bag inflator modules were manufactured and shipped without a necessary component known as a check valve pin.

Risk. In the event of a crash, the air bag will not inflate properly or sufficiently resulting in an increased risk of injury to the seat occupant.

Fix. Dealers will replace the passenger side air bag. Owner notification is expected to begin during august or september 2002. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact isuzu at 1-800-643-4070.

Structure03V113000

What's wrong. As a result of information obtained from a head impact test conducted by the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) to evaluate compliance with federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 201, "occupant protection in interior impact," isuzu has designed a modification for certain 2002 model year isuzu axiom vehicles. The purpose of this modification is to enhance head impact crash protection for front seat occupants.

Risk. The results of this test indicated a possibility of an increased risk of head injury in a crash.

Fix. Isuzu will offer owners of the vehicles a free modification of the roof area of the vehicle in which energy absorbing components will be installed. Owner notification began march 11, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact isuzu at 1-800-255-6727. Customers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

2004 Axiom

Pcm or powertrain control module error. Obd2 code p0602. As a result was shut off vehicle's all power, all dash light icons were on suddenly. First abs and then air bag, brake, battery, check engine etc. Vehicle was died in seconds right in the middle of busy highway i-80!! It was horrible. No problem was occurred before. Isuzu company has to be responsible for this. Full maintenance for this car was performed on time as required via isuzu axiom manual. I have all records. Several mechanics told me that all isuzus have a similar problem with powertrain control module. *tr

2004 Axiom

I purchased my 2004 isuzu axiom in the spring of 2004. Purchased from stokes mazda isuzu and app. 6 months ago my vehicle started hesitating when trying to accelerate. When i go to pull off the tachometer jumps to 3 or 4 rpms but the vehicle is not going anywhere. Finally,it will get gas and suddenly take off. I have had my vehicle at 2 different dealers and they put it on their diagnostic system and say nothing is wrong. Something is terribly wrong because the other day as i was pulling across the road it did this to me and i was almost t-boned by another vehicle. It feels that the gas is not getting to the engine or either the transmission is sticking. This happens almost everytime i get in it but the dealer is saying it is not happening while putting it on a diagnostic machine or when they test drive it. I even suggested that i go with them and they would not acknowledge my suggestion. Do you have any other complaints of this happening?*jb

2003 Axiom

Transmission bad at 61k. Spent $3,800 on rebuilt transmission as metal particles were clogging the transmission filter. Mechanic noted that tranmission pump was bad and causing metal to break off and clog the filter. *tr

2003 Axiom

Spent 2800 for new transmission. Transmission replaced 2x on 2003 isuzu axiom. *tr

2003 Axiom

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 isuzu axiom. The contact experienced extreme difficulty shifting the gear from park. The dealer stated that the shift lever and switch accessory failed. No repairs were made. The current mileage was 115,000 and failure mileage was 2,000.

2002 Axiom

My 2002 isuzu axiom transmission started slipping within a week i was at a stop sign i went to take off and my car wouldn't drive it went in reverse but not forward if i hit 'winter mode' it will bypass first gear and drive in second and third but not in first.... Once i come to a stop it comes out of winter mode and then i have to shut the car off and restart it and put it in winter mode all over again..... This transmission needs to be recalled and fixed free of charge...... This is a common issue with this transmission.. It's not fair to customers who have this suv and these common issues happen and where now responsible for fixing it... Not fair my suv is now just sitting in my driveway they don't make these transmissions or parts for them i've gone to advanced i've looked online it will cost thousands of dollars for a new transmission plus labor or the simple fix is a solenoid but guess what you cant find the part.... We should not be held responsible please help us fix our suv i love my suv and miss driving it help us!!!!!! I need my car to work and i've been out of work bc i have no vehicle please help... Sincerely, a single mom. *tr

2002 Axiom

My 2002 isuzu axiom has 47,000 gentle miles on it and the transmission began to slip. Within a week of that starting it completely stopped shifting out of 1st gear. This is a commonly reported issue and from what my mechanic has said 'it's just a poor piece of equipment. '

2002 Axiom

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 isuzu axiom. While acceletating from a stop and driving up a small incline, the vehicle stalled and the check engine and check transmission warning indicators illuminated. The contact stated that the vehicle had difficulty shifting from first and second gears. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the transmission needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired as the contact wanted a second opinion. The vehicle was taken to another independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.

2002 Axiom

I have a 2002 isuzu axiom with 84,000 miles. The transmission is slipping. Apparently this is a defect that many, many owners are experiencing or have experienced. This defect needs to be recalled and fixed by the manufacturer not to mention other issues with the power windows, check engine lights, starter failing to start right away

2004 Axiom

Why were the last two years of production(2003-2004) of these vehicles not recalled to be treated to slow rusting components in the undercarriage/frame on all isuzu rodeos, honda passports and isuzu axioms. Although a limited production, the final two years are still going to fail from salt/chemical contamination. I recently purchased a 2004. It was advertised as being from north carolina. I later discovered the owner also lived and used the vehicle for most of it's road use in new york and massachsetts. It too has had a large dose of road chemicals. The recall currently calls for isuzu to inspect and apply a rust preventive coating to slow/delay corrosion that will cause the frame to fail. Why not include all of these frames in the safety recall? The existing isuzu dealer network is exiting the automotive market. If the last two production years fail in a year or two, there will not be a dealer network that will service an isuzu product. *tr

2003 Axiom

I brought my car to two different mechanics in my area and both told me the frame has severe corrosion and is might be unsafe to drive on. They showed me multiple holes in the frame on the back passenger corner of the vehicle. It looks so bad that i could just break the frame with a hammer. The vehicle passed inspection, but they told me i should take it to a welder to get it repaired. Is this something i can drive on? Am i risking my life? It appears that the frame was recalled on the 2002 models, but not the 2003 and 2004 models which use the same exact frame! I have no idea why. Sounds pretty stupid and might risk someone's life. *js

2003 Axiom

Tl* the contact owns a 2003 isuzu axiom. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken for a routine oil change when the dealer advised that under rust was found on the rear passenger side of the vehicle, as well as the frame bracket. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The failure and the current mileage was 140,000.

2002 Axiom

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 isuzu axiom. While driving 30 mph, the rear lower axle bracket detached from the frame. The contact stated that the vehicle was wobbling and the service engine and axle warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 165,941.

2002 Axiom

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 isuzu axiom. The contact stated that the vehicle was towed to the dealer for a recall repair on the rear suspension. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for scheduled maintenance. The mechanic informed the contact that the subframe was severely corroded and fractured in the rear. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 114,000. Updated 4/5/2017 *js

2002 Axiom

Tl* the contact owns a 2002 isuzu axiom. The contact stated that the vehicle violently jerked to the right, causing the steering to become inoperable. Additionally, while at a stop the contact attempted to accelerate and the rear sub frame became detached from the vehicle. The contact discovered that the fuel tank case, the rear suspension, and the rear sub frame rusted and deterioration. The parts had detached causing the vehicle to be unable to be driven. The vehicle was previously serviced for nhtsa campaign id number: 10v436000 (suspension) and nhtsa campaign id number: 05v466000 (fuel system, gasoline).the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 122,000.

2002 Axiom

Backed up into a pole at dunkin doughnuts- at less than 5mph , upon investigation found that the complete bumper assembly was rotted , there was no bumper rebar or very little of it left, this a safety hazard, it should also be expanded as part of the suspension recall on this vehicles should also include 02-04 axioms. I have gone to numerious salvage yards & called for a rear bumper assembly only to find out plastic covers o.k. But the rest rotted out. In my incident i took out bumper cover , rear hatch & glass , you would expect less damage at this slow speed. Thank god this was not hit from behind from another car. I would recomend an investigation or expansion of the current recall to include rear bumper assembly. *tr

2002 Axiom

The frame of the car has significant rust corrosion. Holes are developing in the main frame directly under suspension and body mountings. Frame repair is likely more than market value of car.

2002 Axiom

I brought my car to the [xxx], which is the representative for isuzu in my area to have pictures taken, as a result of my frame being rotten and falling under the recall. On february 10th the first pictures were taken, we were asked to bring it back two additional times because isuzu said the pictures were not of quality, but the willy's service person showed them to us and stated himself that they couldn't understand what the problem was. After over three weeks, we've called and been able to get no information from our case worker, [xxx]. We were told that we remained in our spot in the line of recalls, so can't understand why after 5 days of having comprehendible photos, no information can be given. 2002 Axiom

I purchased a 2002 isuzu axiom in april 2010, had it checked by my personal mechanic on february 7th to be told that the frame was rotted out. We brought my car to capital lincoln mercury where we purchased the vehicle to be told there was a recall on it. Then we brought it to have pictures taken at [xxx] on february 10th, who we were told is the isuzu representative in our area. We didn't hear back from either isuzu or willy's so then we contacted them and were told that the pictures were bad; this happened two other times and we've spoken to our case worker at isuzu on friday to be told that he couldn't tell us any information about the decision or my car whatsoever. [xxx] is our service department manager from [xxx] and [xxx]was our case worker from isuzu. We are very frustrated with the lack of help, as we have had to initiate every single contact with isuzu and their representative. I am also still without a vehicle, that i am unable to drive for safety reasons, with no aid from anyone, in respect to a loaner vehicle or any information. Service Brakes 21% 32 Read
2003 Axiom

Not even a year after purchasing my 2003 isuzu axiom, i have had multiple issues with the brakes. On 5 or more occasions, i have had to come to a sudden stop or have pressed the brakes lightly on a bumpy service and have had very poor results. The results include a sense of the brakes not working at all. Before i purchased the axiom, i owed a 98 isuzu rodeo that had very similar braking issues. I had a wreck in my 1998 rodeo where i feel that my brakes failed when i had to come to a sudden stop in rush hour traffic. That was 3 years ago and i still suffer on a daily basis from that car accident. I recall that i pressed my brakes hard and i had to let off the brake and then press them again for the brakes to work. This is the same issue that i have to now deal with on my axiom. This problem does not happen just when you need to brake suddenly. I have had issue when stopped at a red light.you know when you let off the brake some to inch forward a little.....my car will sometimes lurch as though you have pressed the gas. It is a hazard and i really think that there is an issue with the isuzu brakes. My car now has 34,000 miles on it and i have been having my brakes checked and replaced several times. My brakes constantly make a noise and shuttering. I am told that this is my rear brakes....it does not go away and i have them replaced and adjusted several times, as well as replacing the front brakes. *ak

2003 Axiom

I have had a problem with the anti-lock brake system virtually since i purchased the car in nov 2003. When i brake on a bumpy or wet road, or when i have to brake hard to stop in an emergency, the car rattles and make s grinding sound. It also take extra long to slow the vehicle much less stop. The last time i had this problem i was driving in traffic and a van several vehicles in front of me stopped to make an illegal u-turn. I tend to keep a greater distance between my car and the car in front of me due to the brake issue. Regardless, the road i was on has a few bumps. At the point of attempting to stop and avoid hitting the vehicle in front of me the brakes went into anti-lock and didn't stop my car before i hit the car. I have already change the brake two other times and had rotors replaced one. I will be needing new brakes and rotors within the next 5-10k miles. Four sets of brakes in less than 70k miles screams that there is a problem beside the vehicle not stopping, or slowing significantly in an emergency. *jb

2002 Axiom

I was involved in a collision, where the gas pedal was stuck and the brakes did not function properly. There were not any road conditions that should have prevented this vehicle from standing still. I was at a stop sign and the vehicle took off hitting a another vehicle in the side body. I have called the dealer and isuzu and no one seems to be concerned about a brand new car crashing, malfunctioning injuring me and my grand daughter. The only response i got for isuzu, was inquiring about me purchasing a new car, when the salesman found out that i had gaap insurance and they would be paid off for the other car. No only am i furious about the isuzu customer service i still have one of these awful cars, the day after i purchased my isuzu axiom, my wife bought a brand new one too. I hope she lives to trade this vehicle in for something reliable.

2004 Axiom

2002 Axiom

Tl*the contact owns a 2003 isuzu axiom. While depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle accelerates. The contact has to apply more pressure to the brake pedal in order for the vehicle to come to a complete stop. The vehicle was taken to a dealer once, but they could not duplicate the failure. The current mileage was 65,000 and failure mileage was 8,000. Updated 05/06/08. *lj the consumer stated the failure happened when braking to a stop. As the consumer was about to stop, the engine revved. The consumer crashed into a parked vehicle. Updated 05/06/08. *jb

2002 Axiom

I am driving this car for the last two years now - but unfortunately i still do not have any confidence driving this car in a rainy weather. I already had three accidents in a rainy weather and the speeds while driving were as low as 5 mph.*ak i think there is weight issue at the back end of the car. Driving in a rainy weather is like a nightmare. I checked with other three axiom owners and all of them had the same issue/concern. All teh other features are just perfect for me. When talked with the dealer they just could not believe it. For proving it to them i had to be a good vediographer and should be able to record the pattern in a parking lot or something. I need help on this and would strongly suggest to the other people to log-in a skidding complaint if they really face it as i want it to be a recall issue if al of them are facing it. Before i bought this car i already had 4 yrs of suv driving experience.

2002 Axiom

Was traveling 5mph & had applied the brakes, in the rain, which failed. Vehicle ran into back of school bus. Had severe front end damage. Took to dealer for repairs. Dealer refuse to repair because of accident. Had insurance adjustor come in and took vehicle for test drive. Declared nothing was wrong with brakes to cause accident. Ts

*ak

*jb

Extreme vibration while coming to a stop. Starts around 15-20 mph and continues as long as the brakes are depressed. Normally i hear (feel) it and pump the brakes to try and make it stop. Problem has occurred since we purchased new in 2001 and continues to happen today. I have had it checked by the dealership and other mechanics. It does not appear to affect the actual braking but i don't think it is normal. I have replaced the brake pads in the front. Did not help. Local dealership no longer sells/services isuzu. *jb

Isuzu axiom 2002. My wife was trying to merge onto james river freeway in springfield, mo from hwy 65 n. It was raining but her speed was less than 40 mph. She attempted to accelerate to merge into the traffic pattern and the suv spun out of control and sent us down a boulder embedded embankment of about 30 feet. The suv bounced over the boulders and came to a rest at the bottom of the incline. Fortunately we were able to 4 wheel drive out, two ruined tires, and the front bumper assembly ripped from the frame. My complaint is this: there was no practical reason for the suv to spin out of control. The suv has only 45,000 miles on it. I think there is too much torque for the suspension system. *la

We have owned our axiom for 3 months, after approx 1000 miles we noticed that when starting the car occasionally right after the vehicle started it would buck, back fire, smoke and have no power at all for approx the first 1-2 minutes of running. We did'nt think to much of as it was brand new and had not been broken in as of yet. Then it started to happen more often and would even stall before we got out of the driveway.we brought it in for the 1st oil change at 4000 miles and had them check it and the said that there was no code on the computer so it must have been bad gas (i don't think so) also when this occurs going down the road the transmission acts up after it clears up like it surges forward and back. I'm writing this today because on 8/19/04 i went to dinner and leaving i had to cross 3 lanes of heavy traffic to go home. When i pulled out the car bucked, backfired and close to no power at all, i was almost "t" boned by a tractor trailer and another car. The car straightened it self out just in time and i was able to get out of there way. My wife said it did it to her when she tried to pass a car but that she put the gas pedal to the floor and it picked up and ran ok after that. I have another appoint to have suspension checked and i hope they will look at this to. 2nd thing is a rear suspension problem. When the car has 2 adults, 2 children and 3 suit cases in the rear and traveling the highway. Prior day before the brake, i had noticed a swaying/swinging in rear end of my car while out running errands. I thought it was just bad road or i had changed lanes not well. Didn't drive it the next day. Saturday morning i was enroute to pickup the grandkids to attend a free kids home depot workshop, i left my home and turned 1 block left to travel the route i normal take to their home. I go up a l hill and after i crest the hill i hear this loud clank noise. I thought that i had run over something so i pull over and check the rear view mirror, saw nothing. I got out and circled my car and after coming back around, on the driver rear i noticed a bar hanging down. So i get down and look to see this bar running from what appeared to be in front of my back rear tire to dangling down from where it appeared to be broken from corrosion and rusted from the frame of my car. I was 3/4 blocks from home so i slowly drove it back to my house where i have not driven it since. I took photos and showed it to my mechanic and he advised me not to drive it, that it appeared that a stabilization bar had broken it the car was not safe to operate. I live in iowa and brought the car in 2008. They do salt and sand the street during the winter months. I have a 2002 isuzu axiom mileage 101,000.. While driving i hit a pot hole - the family heard a weird sound. We pulled over and noticed the passenger rear control arm had broken away from the frame. I took the vehicle to a welding shop to have it repaired. The welding shop called me after putting the vehicle in the air that the frame was totally rotted away.. Some places of the frame you can put your hand thru the bottom and some places thru the top of the frame. There are other places that can not be repaired do to side rot of the frame.. The weld shop informed me the axiom can not be repaired and can not pass inspection. I looked on line and found the odi reports of similar problems - so here is my report. The rest of the axiom is perfect no rust on the body and engine runs perfect. At this time the vehicle has a insurance value of $6,700 per an insurance adjustor, but insurance wont cover it. So im out a vehicle thanks to a company using inferior metal for a frame. Also have loud creaking noise from underneath the front side of vehicle when turning left, right, or going over small bumps. Problem fixed once out of 4 dealerships that were tried. Noise went away after service tech tightened bolts connecting the cross bar/beam to the 2 long torque bars that run down the length of vehicle. After 1 month, problem came back, was fixed again, and then came back again. After 4 revolutions of this, problem persists today. Vehicle's frame felt "tighter" when making turns during the period where problem was fixed as compared to when the noise was present. The longer the noise exists, the "looser" the frame feels, as well. Additionally, a "tar-like substance" has been seeping out of all 4 doors since the summer of 2004. The isuzu dealership where i bought the car new from says that they are familiar with the problem from many other customers, the substance is used to secure a "vapor seal" inside each door panel, and isuzu will not warranty the cleaning or replacing of it. Essentially exactly like tar itself, it melts when the vehicle is parked under direct sun. Due to the large quantity, it becomes unavoidable when loading/unloading passengers or, in our case, small children in car seats. It has ruined the carpet, many of our clothes, and given us great heartburn. Why won't isuzu warranty the cleaning and replacement of this faulty material? Most all manufacturers have some type of vapor/water seal and you will not find tar leaking out of their vehicles. *nm

Throughout all of this i have also found oil spots behind my exhaust when the vehicle idles, and i go through almost 3 qts of oil a week! The engine has been knocking for well over a year, and while i've had 4 mechanics look at it , nobody has been able to solve this problem. I have to let the vehicle run for 10 minutes before driving to try and avoid the engine stalling, and i still have some problems with it stalling. This has become a very expensive and dangerous problem with no apparent end in sight. If i wasn't upside down on the loan i would have gotten rid of it by now. I have found many articles online regarding the oil consumption and engine stalling problems. I can't believe this vehicle has not been recalled. *tr

At 66000 miles on my 2004 isuzu axiom, i started hearing a noise that i had previously heard a couple of times before in the past 4 years. I took my car to a mechanic and he said there wasn't a drop of oil in the car. I was still 1500 miles away from an oil change. This is not the first time this has happened. I have taken my car in a couple of times before and the same thing has happened--not a drop of oil in the car with a 1000 miles or more from an oil change. The mechanic said the only fix is a new engine. My car is still under warranty, so i had it towed to a dealer in augusta georgia. I live in columbia sc and that is the closet place i could take it to have warranty work done. When it got there the service manager called and said, you need a new engine--i am going to order it and it will be here in a week or so. A few days later he called back and said isuzu wouldn't send an engine without doing an oil consumption test. Clearly the car is burning oil because there is no leak. Whey should i have to go through and oil consumption test after two mechanics have said--you need an engine in the car. Why can't isuzu stand behind there products and warranty agreements. The bottom line is they don't want to pay to have a new engine put in the car. Has anyone else had a problem with the car burning oil? *tr

The two people that witnessed this ran to my car and opened both the driver and passenger doors and my feet were still on the brake all the way floor. My air bags did not go off because i was on the brake so hard that my bumper went under the crown victoria. My bumper put a small dent in the crown's gas tank. I bought my isuzu axiom in nov 2002. It has had several hazardous defects. 1) in may 2005, at 60,000 miles the transmission suddenly failed while driving, causing the vehicle to slow to 20-30 mph, no longer accelerating. It was brought to the dealership. The transmission fluid burnt up. After two transmission flushes the transmission still needed to be replaced. Only after getting isuzu involved, did the dealership honor the warranty and replaced the transmission. Three weeks later i received the vehicle back. The same day it suddenly slowed again, not accelerating past 20 mph and it slipped/spun accelerating from stop lights. It was immediately brought back to the dealership, the main oil seal was replaced. After that it worked with intermittent periods of slipping/spinning when accelerating. It progressively became slower to accelerate when passing, changing lanes. In sept. 05 the transmission went bad again, my vehicle suddenly stopped accelerating while going up a hill, causing a near accident with vehicles behind me. It was towed to the dealership, the transmission needed replaced again, for the third time! What good is isuzu axiom's 10 year/120,000 mile warranty if the transmission keeps going out suddenly as i drive it? The warranty won't prevent me from being in an accident the next time this happens. In addition it has experienced the following defects. 2) sept. 04 the timing belt cracked at 44,000 miles, needing replaced. Per the schedule maintenance it should not need replaced until 100,000 miles. 3)june 04, the low fuel light came on and the gas meter dipped to empty after just filling up. The fuel pump needed replaced. 4)june 04, the check transmission light came on, it could not be duplicated at the dealer. 5)march 04 and october 04 the front wheel bearings needed repacked and now need fully replaced due to barely passing sept 05 state inspection. 6)the vehicle intermittently skids to stop when brakes are applied in the rain. *jb

2002 Axiom

1. 8,000 miles to current brakes intermittently fail when traveling at 30+ mph. When the brakes are depressed the vehicle lunges forward. 2. Passenger side seat belt intermittently only allows retraction regardless of the brakes are depressed or not. 3. 46,539 miles fuel gauge shows 1/2 tank onboard computer shows low fuel and fuel light illuminates. Dealer replaced fuel pump assembly. Problem corrected. 4. 57321 miles intermittent sluggish acceleration (intermittent since 20,000 miles) combined with intermittent incorrect timing shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. Dealer reluctantly replaced piston seal cover under drive train warranty. 2nd opinion private mechanic verified the leaking seal. Problem has worsened remains unresolved as of 10/2/04. Friend purchased same make and model within 2 weeks of my purchase both from robbins isuzu, humble texas and has had the exact same problems only her braking problem resulted in an accident. Isuzu dealership refuses to acknowledge any problems. *ak

2002 Axiom

While driving to work i noticed that my gas needle was low which i deemed funny because i had just fulled the suv the morning before, i then when to the station to get gas just to check and i only got $6.00 dollars in the tank and also the computer said that i was 56 miles from empty. The front end shakes at highway speeds, the air conditioner stopped working, sparks come from it when you turn it on, the blower fan just stopped working, the brakes make a loud sound upon being applied, the outside temperture indicator does not work anymore.*ak

2002 Axiom

When the vehicle was started, the gas gauge would go pass empty and caused the engine light to appear, when going over bumps the vehicle would swing out (almost lost control), when the speed goes up to 60 mph the front end vibrates, and when a right turn was made, a cracking noise was heard. The dealer could not duplicate. *mr scc

*tr

2002 Axiom

On july 22, 2010, i purchased a 2002 isuzu axiom for my pregnant daughter, from alam, the owner and operator of a cars 4-u, located on 3503 hillcroft street suite b, houston, texas 77057. Upon the purchase, alam, the owner and operator of a cars 4-u urged me to purchase a penn warranty, but i could not, so he purchased it. A couple of days later, i began experiencing steering problems, shifting gears, air conditioning problems, automatic door and window problems etc. He told me to have my daughter bring it in but, she refused to because he was always harassing her asking her to go out to lunch with him, so i took it back to him and he said, "that's why i told you to purchase a warranty". Two hours later, he told me that the mechanics checked out the vehicle and that nothing was wrong with it. As soon as i returned home,i began experiencing the same problems. So, the next day, i took it to two other mechanics. They told me that the vehicle was having rack and pinion and transmission problems. I then contacted alam, the dealership again and told him that i had taken the vehicle to two other mechanics and told him what they said. His response was, "let the warranty take care of it". Alam, the dealership took me to another one of his mechanic's that worked on all of his vehicles, whose shop located on 4208 mangum rd. Ste.8 called autotech collision executive auto, i tried to wait for them to test drive it but alam began to engage in improper conversations, and making improper bodily and hand gesters so i left. After about another week later, i called to check on the status of the vehicle, they told me that nothing was wrong with the vehicle. *tr

2002 Axiom

I have a 2002 isuzu axiom with 84,000 miles. The transmission is slipping. Apparently this is a defect that many, many owners are experiencing or have experienced. This defect needs to be recalled and fixed by the manufacturer. The second issue is the buttons on the radio/heating and cooling unit falls out. This too needs to be recalled and fixed by the manufacturer. *tr

2002 isuzu axiom replaced transmission and electrical system after mechanic stated everything was running fine. *kb ***nar*** the consumer has also had problems with the vehicle's air conditioner and the oxygen sensor. *nm

2002 Axiom

Air conditioning - at approx. 31,000 miles on my isuzu axiom the air conditioner began making a loud noise and would not cool at idle. I took the vehicle into the dealership and they stated that the air compressor had gone out and needed replacement. They were happy to replace the air compressor and other components they claimed needed to be replaced due to the air compressor being replaced (i.e. Dryer, etc.) for a mere $1,600.00. I was not happy since the vehicle had low mileage and i have never had a vehicle that had the a/c fail at such a low mileage. The dealership contacted the local isuzu rep and they refused to replace the compressor at no cost. I felt that since the car was so new and had such low mileage that they would stand behind their product. Not!!! The local isuzu rep even wanted me to provide service records (oil changes, etc.) on the vehicle so they could be sure i was maintaining the vehicle as i should. I asked what that has to do with the air conditioner. They really had no response. I went to the dealer to pick up my car to take to another repair shop for another opinion and as i was picking up the car i wrote on the windows with shoe polish right in front of the service bay. I wrote "isuzu do not buy one!" the service manager of the dealership was standing out there and saw me. I again expressed how mad i was with isuzu's sorry product and the service manager asked me to come into his office. He called the local isuzu rep and spoke with him briefly and then isuzu decided they would only charge me $635.00 for the a/c work. I was still not happy but had the work done anyway. Isuzu does not stand behind their products and the warranty is a joke! I feel that isuzu should refund me what i paid for the a/c work since it was obviously a defective part in my vehicle. *jb

2002 Axiom

Car purchased 11/2002. 6 months later transmission went out, replaced. Since replacement only getting 13-15 miles to the gallon. Took car in 3 times and could not find a problem. About a month later car starting rattling, the drive train was replaced. The gear by the seat states in drive but the dash states d3 or nuetral depending if the gear is up or down. I address this problem with the shop and was told this is normal and have to make sure my dash has the correct gear and not to go by my handle on the side of seat. Now today, my car starts smoking and made a rattling screaching noise and it is my air compressor. Also, the brake jump when it is wet and is very scary when i brake and i am afraid that car is not going to stop. Also, the seat belt constantly get caught under the seat and when you think you are strapped in you are not since the plactic piece catches under the seat. I found this out when i had to abruptly stop my brakes and was pushed forward, this happens on the driver and passenger side. This is very dangerous! This car is awful. I have owned 5 different cars in my life and this car is horrible. I purchased the car in november 2002 and have had less than 3 years.
