Who makes Lamborghini
Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. is an Italian luxury sports-car manufacturer headquartered in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Emilia-Romagna. Founded in 1963 by tractor manufacturer Ferruccio Lamborghini after a dispute with Enzo Ferrari, the brand was acquired by Audi AG (Volkswagen Group) in 1998 after passing through Chrysler, MegaTech and V'Power Corporation ownership. The 1966 Miura was the first mid-engine V12 production supercar and is widely credited with creating the supercar segment. The Countach (1974-1990), Diablo (1990-2001), Murciélago (2001-2010), Aventador (2011-2022) and current Revuelto have continued the V12 mid-engine flagship line. The Huracán (V10) and the Urus Super SUV (twin-turbo V8, the brand's first SUV since the LM002) anchor the broader lineup. Each year the brand sells approximately 10,000-11,000 vehicles globally. Lamborghini's parent Volkswagen Group trades on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange as VOW3. Recall data for every Lamborghini VIN sold in the US is reported to NHTSA. ForCar.org decodes any Lamborghini VIN to surface trim, factory options, open recalls and original delivery price.
Ferruccio Lamborghini, owner of a successful tractor manufacturing business, complained to Enzo Ferrari about the clutch quality on his 250 GT in 1962. Enzo's reportedly dismissive response — that Ferruccio should stick to driving tractors — prompted Ferruccio to start his own competing supercar company in 1963. The 1964 350 GT was the first model, but it was the 1966 Miura that established the brand by introducing the mid-engine V12 layout that defined supercars for the next sixty years.

Where Lamborghini cars are actually built
A badge says where a company is registered, not where its cars were bolted together. The first three characters of any VIN — the world manufacturer identifier — say the second thing, and that is what we counted: 6 vehicles on record, 1 distinct manufacturer codes.

|---|---|---|---|
| Italy | ZHW | 2004–2023 |
Read your own: the first character is the region, the first three together identify the plant's manufacturer. A Lamborghini beginning ZHW was assembled in Italy.

Lamborghini window stickers →How to read a Lamborghini VIN
Every Lamborghini built since 1981 carries a unique 17-character VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). It encodes where and when the vehicle was made, its engine and body — here's what each part means:
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Lamborghini and the country it was built in (real Lamborghini codes below).
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled it.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
- ItalyZHW
- USAZPB
The remaining digits — engine (8th), model-year letter (10th) and plant — follow the universal SAE standard. To decode a VIN number position by position, including the year-code table and where to find the number, use our free tool.
Who owns Lamborghini, and what you get
Lamborghini belongs to Volkswagen Group. Lamborghini competes in supercars, hypercars and ultra-luxury SUVs against Ferrari, McLaren, Aston Martin, Bentley and (for the Urus) Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT and Rolls-Royce Cullinan. Within Volkswagen Group, Lamborghini operates with greater independence than other VW Group brands due to the strength of the Italian-engineered V12 platform. The Urus, launched in 2018, doubled annual brand volumes and now represents the majority of Lamborghini deliveries.
