How to read a Mazda Millenia VIN — every digit explained

Every Mazda Millenia carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

I bought this 1995 mazda millenia [xxx] in march. By the time i bought it, the odometer read 65000+. Later on because i had a lot of problems with it, i asked the repair shop to check it's background for me. The carfax report they forwarded to me showed in 2002 it was already 185000. The shop manager told me there were too many issues with the car and it's not worth fixing. From march till now, i've spent close to $1000 to fix various failures on the vehicle. I wish i'd know about your website a long time ago. I can't afford the $3500 it'll take to repair this car so today, i'll have to trade it & go back to paying a car note. This car was paid off. It didn't fall under the lemon law rule but if i had to classify it, i'd certainly classify it as a lemon or put it up for recall consideration. All of these problems with the same part of the vehicle is absurd. I've owned many vehicles & never required this much maintenance. I purchased it brand new 11/2002. *tr

The vehicle was stationary on a city street. Started the vehicle, foot on the brake and shifted into drive.vehicle was idling at normal rpm. When the foot was removed from the brake petal, the car lurched forward at full throttle. My foot never touched the gas pedal. It traveled about 10 feet striking a vehicle. I was able to stop the car by pushing on the brake pedal and came to a stop. The engine speed returned to normal rpm. I started to lift my foot off the break pedal and the car resumed full throttle forward. It pushed the first vehicle i hit into the car parked in front of it and pushed it into another vehicle before i could get it stopped. The engine returned to normal rpm. I put the car in park and turned off the engine. Police were called and a report filed. An ase certified mechanic checked the car immediately after the crash and found the throttle linkage was free, was not able to reproduce the high rpm, and could not read any error codes on the computer. This was within 20 minutes of the crash while the police were present. Both vehicles i hit were totaled. No serious injuries or deaths in the accident.

Parked the car in the grocery store parking lot and when returning to the car to leave, started the car, backed out of the parking spot and then proceeded to put the car in drive and leave. When i did, the car kept going in reverse. I put the car in neutral, park, 2nd and overdrive all which the car kept going in reverse. Fortunately, the car behind me was not close enough nor were there people surrounding the car immediately that i could have hit because of the problem with the car. I let the car roll back in to a spot and turned the car off. When i did the car would not start at all. I left the car there until i got the car towed the next morning. The tow truck driver said it was very fortunate that the car did not roll away or someone stole it because while it was in park, the car could have easily been pushed as he demonstrated to me and the mechanic. This is a 2001 car and i feel like this is a safety defect. I hate to think about the possiblity that i could have started to drive forward only to have the car go in reverse and hit a person or child. This faulty defecty should be investigated before someone or something does get hurt. Since then, the mechanice has fixed it and was a faulty shift cable that he replaced and for me very costly but not as costly as the injury to someone if this car would have backed in to them.*ak

2000 Millenia

I purchased a 2000 millenia millenia model that only has 39,000 miles on it. In october, 2003 my car mis-fired and the check engine light came on. The diagnosis was that the ignition coil for cylinder #2 was bad and needed replacing. At that time, mazda customer service paid for the part and i paid for the labor. A few days ago (six months later), an identical situation occurred and the diagnosis was that the ignition coil for cylinder # 6 was bad and needed replacing. The dealership called mazda inquiring about restitution, but this time, the company paid for nothing. I am very concerned about two things. First, what is the defect in my vehicle to precipitate the failure of two ignition coils in close succession? Is this an engineering defect? Further, am i going to have to go through this process for all 6 cylinders of my car engine? Right now, i feel that i cannot trust my car for fear of a repeat occurrence with one or more of the other cylinders. Second, if i have to replace all the coils, i figure that the investment will be between $1500 and $2000 to fully fix the car. This is an extraordinary expense to fix what i consider an engineering problem! Is there a "product recall" or "special service program" to assist with paying for fixing this problem? Ideally, i should have all of my ignition coils replaced in order to have a trustworthy car again. In summary, i believe that this is an unsafe situation and wanted to report it to you. Thank you.

1999 Millenia

I currently own a 1999 madza millenia, which i purchased pre-owned, in 2002. I have had nothing but problems and extremely expensive repair bills since that time. The car breaks down/is in need of repair every 3-4 months, and it is always the same major problem with 2-5 new things needing to be repaired as well. My latest repair bill, (2) weeks ago, was to the tune of $1280. 80. The check engine came on in october 2003 and has not went off since that time. I was afraid to drive the car when this occurred, but i was told it was ok to do so when it once again it came on after i took it in for repair to the tune of $898.00. It has blinked a total of (3) times with the latest being on yesterday (the aforementioned $1280.80 repair bill was to correct the blinking problem (2) weeks previous). I have replaced the egr valve and sensor a total of (4) times, due to being told that this is the cause of the check engine light being on-when it began to blink last may of 2005, i was told by the service manager of the local madza dealership 30+ miles away from where i reside, that he had no clue as to what it means when the check engine light blinks. That particular repair bill cost me almost $900. I am so completely frustrated and angry to the point of tears. I have kept up the scheduled maintenance, the best tires, etc. And still problems. I have spent so much money trying to keep this car in good working condition, as well as a safe mode of transportation for my self and my little brother, who has special medical needs that require being seen by medical services providers that are located over 200 miles from where we reside. With it being a pre-owned car, on the advice of others, i purchased an extended warranty a few days after purchasing the car, from the madza dealership for $900, that was completely worthless-the warranty has expired and i am still paying on it. *jb

Front end suspension! I have for the past year been trying to get them to adhere to my findings. There are sounds coming from the end, as though there was a helicopter coming in from the distant. The faster you go the louder it gets. Also, driving real slow or pulling in and out of parking spaces there is a rubbing noise. Even the sound of a metal tap when braking and backing up as though something is shifting. I have put up with arlington rosenthal mazda for too long with this. I really need assistance from someone and that's just the major problem. The other problem is with my rear deck that holds the speakers. Sounds like busted speakers or something is not properly placed sealed tightly with the deck. They jimmy-rigged the brake light cover in the rear window with a little pieace of rubber to apply pressure a year ago. Which i have been back several times since for the same issue, because it has come loose or the rubber was just worn. I think it's really a speaker and maybe the deck as well. Why don't they just replace the whole thing along with the speakers. But of course they will probably claim my warranty may have expired on that part. The first date of problems was started back in late august 2002 all the way through june 2004. I'm just tired now of dealing with and they claim to be the best service shop in the area. I purchased a 97 mazda millennia in 8/97 with 29k miles. Today it is at 77k miles and the check engine light came on. I took it to the dealership and found that the fuel tank has started imploding due to the amount of suction in the tank. The suction has also caused damage to the fuel level sensors. The quoted repair price was $1,800. The service rep informed me that mazda is aware of this problem and has issued an advisory to mechanics to not only check the fuel gauge but also the fuel tank. This is not currently a recall item or a defect but should be. I have done research on the internet and found several cases of other millennia owners with same model year experiencing the same problem. The repairs should be at mazda's expense since the suction in the tank is too high or the fuel tank itself is not structurally capable of handling the pressure. Please issue a recall/defect notice so that this issue can be fixed. *nlm

On february 9, 2001, i took the vehicle in to be serviced, including a tire rotation and balance, 4-wheel alignment. When i went to pick up the car, the right front tire tread had separated and the technician had placed the spare on the vehicle and advised that i needed a new tire. When i told him it was the second tire in less than a year of ownership, he said i needed to contact the manufacturer. On friday, august 10, 2001, i had a third of the original tires tread separate on the left front side just 10k miles after my alignment. No one seems to know what is causing the tires to wear excessively on the inside and separate. When i took the car in to replace that tire, the tire dealer informed me that the last of the original tires was wearing and very susceptible to the same type of tread separation. By the end of the day tomorrow, i will have spent over $600 to purchase new tires for a vehicle that has less than 31k miles on it. Please help! (tiresize: 215/50r17)

1999 Millenia

My main complaint is i have defective dunlop tires on my car which i believe are a safey problem. I'm am wondering if this tire has a hisory of being defective, that is why i am reporting it. Dunlop will not do anything about this problem except credit me the differance on tire the tread wear. The safety, cost and inconvenience is my problem. I have had two tires on the front of my car within 3,500 miles of each other develop the same identical problem, a blister on the sidewall of the tire. I talked with a dunlop supervisor at length about this problem and he told me that dunlop gave me a tire free of cost the first time (which was true) and they would only allow me the tread wear difference this time but later gave me 40% off the price on the new tire. The first tire problem cost me $34.73 and this second tire cost me $173.23. I don't think this is a fair resolution for this dunlop tire problem and seek your help to resolve it. Sears ordered the second replacement tire on 2/17/01. The new tire was received by sears on 3/8/01. I then went to sears on 3/9/01 to have the tire mounted and this is where problem began. I told the sears manager what had happened before and that i would expect the same treatment this time. The sears manager gathered all the information from my car and car's tire and went to his computer an said it would cost me $203.28 to replace this tire. I said there must be some mistake and showed him the paperwork from before. The sears manager said all i was entitled to under the dunlop tire warrenty was the proration of the tire tread wear which was 25% of the price of the new tire. However the price of this new tire increased from $143.99 for the free tire to $208.99 for the prorated tire. The difference in tire cost is a problem but i believe a bigger problem is that dunlop has a defective tire and it should be replaced free of charge until the problem is resolved.*ak (tiresize: p2155ov17)
