How to read a Mini Clubman VIN — every digit explained

Every Mini Clubman carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Clubman.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your Clubman VIN

on 10-15-2024 while i was on my way home my mini caught fire while driving. total loss, i was driving about 65mph and my coworker who travel the same direction flagged me down then calling me to tell me my car was smoking really bad. after i pulled directly over to the side of the road and went to pop the hood and saw nothing but smoke rising up from under the hood. with in 5-10 mins the whole front of the are was engulfed in flames. the damage was so bad that it was undetermined what caused the fire.

2010 Clubman

I bought the car used 10 days ago, 3 days ago, the electrical indicator flashed, so I parked the car. I thought it was a glitch. It was very rainy. I woke up the next morning and it had spontaneously combusted on the inside driver's footwell, obvious flames had been on windows and whole car reeks of smoke. I cant even get inside of the car with the physical key. I could have been inside when the car caught fire. I work with children and just got the car... hadn't put a car seat in yet. To think that a physical key literally doesn't work and the car caught fire in teh electrical and is now (to my knowledge) totaled...makes me sick. BMW / MINI has yet to get get back to me, no one has inspected the car, it hasn't been moved....can't move. The dealership refuses to take responsibility. Obviously I'm distraught and thankful I wasn't in the car. I have read several articles about this exact thing happening to other BMW / MINI owners. Please help. I literally haven't even paid the taxes yet.

2019 Clubman

My Mini Clubman All4, despite having clocked in a mere 33,000 miles in the past four years, has been plagued with issues concerning its air conditioning system. Initially, I sought assistance from the Mini of Morristown dealership in Morristown, NJ, where my vehicle has been serviced over the years. However, their service proved to be unsatisfactory. Despite reassurances that they had recharged the system and that there were no inherent issues, the problem persisted. Upon contacting them again, I was informed that further diagnostics would be subject to additional charges. Disconcerted, I reached out to Mini's customer service team, only to be met with a reaffirmation that there was little they could do. With no resolution in sight, I sought help from a local independent mechanic, who quickly identified the root cause - a compressor line rubbing against other components, leading to leakage – PART # F56 6453 9209722-04. This diagnosis and the ability to swiftly rectify it contrasts starkly with the inability of the authorized dealership to provide effective solutions. This issue may be indicative of a design flaw requiring a recall to prevent further mishaps that could endanger Mini owners. You are welcome to contact Mini of Morristown, NJ, for all service records associated with this issue. I urge you to take immediate action and rectify this situation, not just for my sake but for the sake of all Mini customers. I HAVE THE PART AND CAN SHIP IT. I ALREADY PROVIDED PICTURES OF THE WEAR IN MY EMAIL. The summer heat with the AC not working is surely a hazard. The issue was confirmed by the independent service center that diagnosed and fixed the problem. The manufacturer has been indifferent thus far. It is only now that I have raised a concern with the company's CEO's office. No warning lamps or messages appeared. The Mini team has been incompetent in addressing the issue.

I went into HGreg Nissan of Buena Park/Nissan of Buena Park on [XXX] to look at a car. When I got there, I asked to see the car that they had advertised. Once I signed the necessary paperwork, purchased a bumper-to-bumper warranty as told by the salesperson. I was also told that I would receive a full tank of gas, but I did not. I took that car the Mini Cooper dealership, for a diagnostic test, and was told that there was damage to the engine. The engine light came on, so I had to leave the car at the dealership. Once I purchased the car from the dealership, me as a person who does not understand how dealership processes paperwork and have purchased cars in the past, I have never experienced such blatant disregard for honesty, who deal in deception, and have no moral ethics than with this particular dealership, just for the sale of a car. I received a phone call from a Lady by the name of Alva on 06/28/24 from HGreg Nissan of Buena Park/Nissan of Buena Park which is more than 3 months after the purchase of this vehicle, and she advised me that I needed to come in so that they could do a smog check on the vehicle, and that they let the paperwork expire. This company never processed the necessary paperwork, to the DMV so that this car could be registered to me. This company did not have a smog check done because they knew that it would not pass because the engine light came on. Since that necessary paperwork has not been filed with the DMV the lender of this vehicle is now telling me that they will increase the interest because of this problem. According to CA Law Smog Certifications are required for all sales or title transfers of gasoline-powered vehicles that are four or more years old, and this company did not provide this information to the CA Department of Motor Vehicles. This dealership knew that the engine was faulty which is why they never performed a Smog Check the engine light came on 1 week after it was purchased. I have 2016 Mini Clubman S with 109,000 miles on it , I got a check engine light with a Code U019D. I went to dealer to check and was told the radiator would need to be replaced at a cost of $ 3,700 dollars. After researching it is a common issue due to defect in materials, there was an extended warranty offered by bmw up 15 years or 150,000 miles to cover this defect. I was told that since I am in Florida it doesn't cover it and I believe this is wrong. If there is defect in materials and it is covered for some, why not all. Th ecompany has already stated it is a defect in materials, see below. SIM 13 01 19 Lin Bus Communication Fault for Enviromental Air Catalyst (EAC)Sensor FC1B8302. It States that the chemical compositon of the fan shroud contaminates the EAC sensor. Since this is a know defect from manufacturer I believe they should be replacing the defective material under warranty terms .

2016 Clubman

I am writing to formally express my concerns regarding a 2016 Mini Cooper Clubman S that I purchased in August of the previous year, with 64,000 miles on the odometer. Within just two months of ownership, the vehicle began to exhibit serious mechanical failures. Initially, the water pump failed and had to be replaced. Shortly thereafter, the air conditioning system on the left side malfunctioned. Most alarmingly, the engine suddenly stopped and began to overheat while on the road, necessitating an emergency stop at a nearby mechanic's workshop. The diagnosis revealed a catastrophic engine block failure, with a crack that caused the antifreeze, oil, and possibly fuel to mix—an issue that could potentially lead to a vehicle fire. This vehicle is primarily driven by my wife, who frequently transports our [XXX] son, who is [XXX]. The potential risks had this occurred on a highway are unimaginable and could have led to fatal consequences. Upon discovering these issues, I immediately contacted Mini to inform them of the defect and requested a comprehensive diagnostic examination. I emphasized the possibility that this could be a production line issue, which might affect other vehicles and thereby pose a significant risk to other families. Regrettably, the response I received was dismissive; I was informed that nothing could be done, and my request for a vehicle inspection was outright denied. Given the severity of these issues and the potential risk to human life, I urge your immediate intervention. It is imperative that this matter be revisited and that a thorough investigation into this potential production defect be conducted. Ensuring the safety of all consumers must be a priority, and I respectfully request that my vehicle be inspected at the earliest to prevent any potential future tragedies. Please advise on how we might proceed in this matter. I look forward to your prompt response. Yours sincerely, [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

I have taken my 2016 Mini Cooper clubman in to the dealership multiple times for recalls. After I got my back now it’s saying that my drivetrain needs to be repaired and when I put fuel into my car the car studders to start. I have to turn it on and off like 3 times before I can even leave the gas station. My car also is telling me that I need to secure my vehicle with the parking brake when stopped because the transmission is not in park. I have also attached the codes I was receiving when I did a computer scan of why the check engine light was on. Please help me somebody!!! Thanks I’m advance!!!

Alternate water pump wiring harness for the turbo engine caught fire. Car had been sitting for two hours while my wife and i were shopping. We got in and started the vehicle when less than five seconds later, there was white smoke coming from under the hood. Turned the motor off and checked the engine. When the bmw tech came to render assistance, we started the vehicle and flames came up from the wiring harness. Used multiple liters of water to douse the fire. Car was towed to mini dealer for further investigation and repairs. Please visit northamericanmotoring.com and do some searches for this type of issue. You will be surprised. *kb

On 9/20/2011 i pulled on to the highway with my mini and turned on the air conditioner which did not work. This had never happened before and there were no lighted indicator lights. A few minutes later, the temperature gauge light went on and then went off. I turned on the air conditioner and it was now working. Several minutes later the temperature light went on again so i turned off the air conditioner, entered the right lane and slowed down. The temperature gauge continued to go on and off and then i smelled smoke. When i looked in my rear-view mirror, i saw dark smoke and then more smoke began to pour our from under my hood. I pulled my car off the road and opened the hood after a while. Oil was splattered all over the engine and i noticed that the coolant tank was bone dry. I was towed to hassle mini where my vehicle still is. After inspecting my car, hassle told me they couldn't repair the engine even though my warranty was still in effect. They told me the problem was my fault and i should report it to my insurance company. I was also told it would cost approximately $15,000.00 to replace the engine. I do not understand why hassle will not honor the warranty and i do not understand why a well maintained vehicle should behave like this. My life was endangered in this situation. There are several reasons i believe mini should honor my car's warranty: 1. All required service was performed and records provided. 2. The vehicle had been serviced only 700 miles prior to this incident and found to be in running order. 3. The car had a documented history of faulty indicator lights. 4. There were only 13,674 miles on the car. 5. Mini has a history of engine fires. *tr

My mini was involved in an accident on sept. 23, 2016, the front/back airbags on the drivers side deployed. The dealership is taking an unreasonable amount of time to deliver the parts to the collision company. I have been waiting since jan/2017 for the parts to my car. Since the left/right front airbags are recalls, is there a safety issue and why is it taking 6 months to receive them?

Since November 20, 2022, my low milage 2010 MINI has Passenger Airbag Warning light in the roof near the mirror and dashboard. The OBD II scanner show that "ACSM/MRS: Seat-occupancy detector, passenger." I contacted dealer Herb Chambers MINI of Boston. I was told no recall for my car. After I searched on internet, I am aware that a lot of customers have same Passenger Airbag issue. They can't afford the high repair cost so that they have to look for alternative solutions beyond recalls, such as Passenger Occupancy Sensor Bypass, modifying system parameters on car computer by themself. All these solutions are obviously potential dangerous for MINI cooper customers. I request that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigate MINI cooper Passenger Airbag issue and ask MINI USA to recall defective parts.

My passenger side seat sensor for the airbag has malfunctioned. I have heard of similar issue from other people. I am also aware that this problem was a recall fix for previous year mini coopers. This fault has caused numerous warning lights to stay on all the time when the vehicle is turned on.

I recently purchased a 2009 mini cooper clubman. Within three weeks of taking possession of the car, the airbag warning light activated. Upon a diagnostic test, it was determined that the passenger occupancy sensor was malfunctioning. After discussing this with the mini cooper dealer in my area and mini USA, it was acknowledged that this was a well known and documented issue. First generation mini coopers were afforded a safety recall to rectify this safety issue while second generation cars were given an extended warranty. Unfortunately, I am now driving a car outside of the extended warranty that was only offered to the original owner with a faulty airbag system for any passenger in my car. A recall MUST be issued for the second generation mini cooper to hold the company responsible for this faulty design. Owners of these cars are avoiding the $2500 repair bill by installing sensor bypass modules in order to clear the malfunctioning light warning. NHSTA is well aware of this problem as I have read hundreds of issues and concerns in mini cooper forums. Please address this problem as force the recall on the occupancy airbag sensor before a passenger is seriously injured or killed.

Manual transmission had an issue with 2nd gear not fully engaging and popping out under light acceleration. Transmission was replaced under warranty in December 2022. In April of 2024 the same issue occurred again where 2nd gear would not stay in gear after 18 months of having transmission replaced. The replaced transmission is no longer under warranty. This indicates a part defect of their 6-speed manual transmissions.

It is now common knowledge that this transmission of the 3rd generation has an avoidable fault. There is a small spring in the shifter assembly that fails. It causes an error alert that car is not secure, when it actually is. The recommended repair is over $2000 at the dealer. This is a faulty part that can safety issues with people thinking their brakes are not working, when they actually are. This can lead to tragic accidents.

The Roll Warning light for my 2017 Clubman came on with this message: Secure vehicle with parking brake when stopped. Consult service center. The light came on Saturday evening when I got into my car to go home from a friend's house. It was parked on the side of the street. It comes on now whenever it's parked and I am turning on my emergency brake but the car has not rolled. A friend of mine has a 2017 Mini Cooper 4 door and this same light came on for her the same week mine did. I've also found others posting about it online. All 2017 mini coopers. I went to the dealer (Dreyer & Reinbold of Indianapolis) and they told me 99% of the time the gear shifter assembly would need to be replaced at a cost of $2,100 plus tax and shop supplies. This seems like a problem Mini needs to pay for.

2017 Clubman

Warning comes on stating secure vehicle from rolling. Dealership told us a "sensor" would need to be replaced to correct the problem. It would cost 1800.00 for the part. Advised to put parking brake on when parked. This seems to be a manufacturer problem. We had this issue around 36000 miles.

2017 Clubman

The car has a warning light "secure car against rolling" at first I thought it was a reminder to set the parking brake. The next warning light was "service required" - I just bought this 2017 Mini Clubman two weeks ago so I took it to the mini dealer service center. The motor mount, gear shifter, brakes were all affected and need replacing. When I looked up the "warning light" online - there are literally forums where this specific warning is discussed. I feel this should be an active recall item for Mini Coopers. I could have easily dismissed the warning as a parking brake notice - and caused an accident by letting it go.

I was driving on the freeway when the oil light came on, i called the dealer within seconds and asked them if this was a concern. They said to drive it in it was probably just the oil level needing topped out. I continued for about a mile when the engine light came on. I pulled off at the next exit and called them back. The again said to bring it in. I walked around the car before proceeding and noted that the front wheel well, tire and wheel were all soaked with oil( passenger side) . I called them back and requested a tow truck as when i started it up it made an exceptionally loud hammering noise. I i knew that the engine was going to let go if i continued. The dealer took the car in and called me a day or so later to inform that the timing chain broke a,flattening the valves, messing up the valves and engine block. The told me that it was approx 7,000miles out of warranty. I told them that i had an extended 100,000 service warranty sold to me by the dealer in charleston south carolina. I was sold this by the "finance manager" and he made me believe that i was covered. The dealer where i live in dublin ohio, has serviced the car for every required service since it was purchased. They are trying to get mini to cover the repairs. I had informed them that the odometer always reads about 7 to 8 mph faster than my gps and that the warranty per their instruments would be shorted. The indicated that they would not cut me off in a close situation. The actual power train warranty is 50,000. I have never heard of a timing chain breaking with even a 100,000 miles on it. I have serviced the car at all appropriate intervals as noted in the service records and i pamper the car. I am 61 yrs old and have had many, many cars and do not drive irresponsibly. I believe that this is a known problem by bmw. The mid west auto group has always been exceptional and i have no problems w/them. *js

Shift mechanism froze on several occasions before going in for service on 1/6/12. Upon inspection i was told that repair is not considered under warranty. Dealer claims that some coffee was spilled inside of cup holder and leaked below which resulted in shorting out of a "wire connector" and requires the replacement of the "shifter assembly." reviewing several complaints from various web sights i determined that this is an ongoing problem with a number of mini owners. In fact an owner reported the exact same complaint back in 2003 where the reported leak was from a screw fastening the cup holder to its supporting unit. This is obviously a safety issue: if the wires can "short out" they then may cause a dangerous situation to develop and if the shifter freezes, this could result in an even more serious situation. Since the apparent leaking through these holders was evident to mini - for a number of years - why haven't they either fixed the potential leak source or printed a warning within their manual: "don't put any cup, or other such container into the cup holders as this may result in serious damage to electrical components." aren't "cup" holders supposed to be designed to hold cups safely. Shouldn't there be an expectation that some liquid will spill out during usual driving conditions? If so, why was this design flaw not corrected with consumer complaints occurring for at least eight years? *tr

Problem 1. A bug is inside of tail lamp (right) 2. A lot of dead bug's debris and dust are on the housing of both tail lamps. In my knowledge, the bug inside of the tail lamp cannot be considered an outside influences, such as weather or outdoor influences. Even water should not be intruded on the lamp. This is obviously considered as defective part or improper taillight assembly which is not sealed up tighten enough. It should be covered by warranty as long as the warranty still exists.

I own a 2017 mini clubman, when applying the brakes what turns on are the rear fog lights located in the bottom rear bumper. The main rear tail lights do not illuminate when break pedal is pressed. This causes vehicles nearly rear ending my vehicle numerous times. The car has already been hit and an explanation had to be given to the police as a rear tail light ticket was going to be issued. There should be a recall and the brake lights should be diverted to where they belong "rear tail lights" and not the rear bottom bumper fog lights. I dont own a 2017 mini clubman, but was driving behind one on the interstate. I ended up almost rear ending the clubman when traffic came to a sudden stop because the brake lights are the small lights on the bumper that can be easily confused as rear fog lights/reflectors instead of the big red lights on the rear doors. Thankfully nothing happened as the forward collision systems in my vehicle kicked in and prevented the crash. I consider myself a very alert driver and the design of the rear of the clubman is very confusing since the brake lights that come on are not what you are expecting and where you are expecting them. I understand that there is some regulation that put them there, but i dont see any reason why the lights on the doors could not also light up when braking.

4. Despite performing regular oil changes and complaining about our timing chain making a noise from the first month, mini never fixed the problem always insisting that the noise was normal or that nothing was wrong. Eventually our timing chain jumped the rails and destroyed our engine. The vehicle was inoperable and mini usa declined to fix the issue. Only once did they try to fix it by replacing the tensioner. Please refer to my previous complaint 10443238 for the initial information. This complaint is the follow up. The car went in to the dealer for the dieseling sound the car was making. The diagnosis was that timing chain was stretched and needed to be replaced. Other associated components such as the chain tensioner would also have to be replaced. Total cost is $2200. I started researching this issue on the internet to see if others have had this issue. This led to a website 'northamericanmotoring.com'. Using the search of timing chain, there were 15 pages of complaints from people who have had this exact same repair done on their cars. So many people have been back to the dealership with these timing chain repairs or even complete timing chain breakage, that bmw has issue a service bulletin to outline the repairs necessary to service all these cars. The bulletin number is m11 02 07. About a dozen parts have to be replaced under this service bulletin. When the timing chain stretches too far out of spec or just breaks, and the car is under warranty, bmw will fix it. If it's out of warranty, the $2200 cost is the customers problem. Bmw will not admit that these parts were under engineered, but they are. The replacement timing chain and tensioner are more robust to handle the engine loads. If the parts were properly engineered in the first place, bmw and it's customers would not have had to make all these expensive repairs. In some cases when the timing chain broke when the car was still within warranty, intake and exhaust valves ran into the pistons causing the need for entire engine replacement. The cost for that was $9000. If this happened when the car was out of warranty, the customer had to pay the $9000. Because of the number of people affected, this issue just screams recall but bmw will not step up to it. Please begin an investigation and help us!! *tr

I have the s (turbo) model. When it's cold outside (less than 40 degrees) and the engine is cold (sitting overnight) it sounds like a diesel engine at start up. The first 60 seconds of idle is awful. The engine clatters like a diesel and there is a buzz as well. Like a loose heat shield or something. I have had many cars and trucks in my life and i have never had a vehicle sound like this at idle when it's cold. The engine oil is full and i have synthetic oil in it. So oil viscosity cannot be an issue. I am worried that engine damage is being done and i am going to get stuck with an engine or cylinder head rebuild or replacement. After about a minute, the engine begins to quiet down and then smoothes out. But those start ups!! Absolutely god awful. I would love to see an investigation started on this vehicle. I have read about this issue in mini cooper forums online and this is a widespread and complained about issue. Bmw has apparently tried a number of fixes to no avail, but something has to be wrong. Something is just not engineered correctly. I bought the car used in the spring of 2011 and the temperatures were warm enough that the cold start clattering wasn't too bad. But by october when the morning lows were colder, the problem really began to show up. Nothing has broken yet but it sure sounds like something is ready to let loose. Help! *tr

Engine quits while driving causing an unsafe condition. The car stopped numerous times while on the freeway. It starts back up but stalls again later. Difficulty starting the vehicle. On city streets or the highway the car acts like it isn't getting consistent fuel therefore it "hesitates" as if it were going to die in the middle of driving the vehicle. We believe it is the high pressure fuel pump as we have had the heads cleaned of all carbon and spark plugs have been replaced. Furthermore there is a current recall on the high pressure fuel pump for the years 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Low oil indicator doesn't light up until the oil levels are critically low. Dealer states that they've seen this happen a lot and it's "normal." cost me over $4,000 to fix it at the dealer. 3rd door (suicide door) lock mechanism sticks/breaks down. After getting it fixed, the latch itself broke down.

2009 Clubman

Ive personally driven my 2009 mini cooper clubman 11k miles of the 34k it has on it without any issue until on june 5th, 2016 i parked it near my work and returned to it the next morning.it started up just fine and i just let the first gear take me out of the parking garage. Then i tried to accelerate once on the road and nothing... No power. I put the pedal to the floor and nothing. I pulled over and it sounded like a labored, clanky, rough idle. Got it towed to a shop, diagnostic test showed main relay failure and something about valvetronic servomotor and limitation and plausible air mass sensor issue. Main relay part replaced for $20.worked fine after that. Eighteen days later it happened again. Went home and after some research, i found scary possibilities could happen with my mini related to the engine cooling systems, air intake, water pump and timing chain sensor worst of all. Things that could cause damage if failed while on the highway at 70mph or in an intersection or in traffic! To date, ill be returning to the shop that helped meet band aid the problem, then to my real professional to help me diagnose and treat further possible issues.

2008 Clubman

I purchased a 2008 clubman and it's the non-turbo but the engine has an issue with multiple misfire codes being sent out to the obd2 reader as well as some ecu codes that imply weak fuel pressure and when looking up and trying to find how to replace the fuel pressure pump then i realized i was not alone in this issue and wonder if anyone else has had the thought to actually file a complaint so that way something can be done since it's a very faulty thing and most of these have had issues from 30000 miles about but then for all the others that also have it after the warranty drops to intentionally put in a faulty part i'm not sure if it's illegal or not but it should be. I do no that if they put in enough faulty parts there should be a recall made if it is determined that they are at fault and not the people buying them or mistreating or not maintaining etc etc... I strongly urge anyone else that's had this issue to also make your own complaint if it has happened to you, especially if you had to buy a new car because of it. *tr
