How to read a Mini Cooper Convertible VIN — every digit explained
Every Mini Cooper Convertible carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Cooper Convertible.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Cooper Convertible VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.

My 2015 mini cooper 4 door hardtop was parked in my garage. I started it but had not put it into gear yet. I opened the door and got out (car didn't budge) and as i walked back towards the rear, the car lurched out of park and reversed which caused it to pin me in between the car and the garage beam as it continued to roll quickly backwards as if someone was accelerating. When contacting mini, they had one of their inspectors come (no documentation provided to me). I was called (again no documentation) and told that the engineer found no fault in the transmission or electrical system and that this was not a defect. They have since been unresponsive with providing documentation, haven't been ale to acquire parts to fix my damaged vehicle and refuse to acknowledge that there is something wrong with selling a car that can kill people and to not have parts for 4 months! I had my car for a total of 2 months total drive time. It's been in the shop for 4 months with no resolution in sight.
Tl* the contact owns a 2015 mini cooper. While attempting to unlock the trunk with key fob, the trunk failed to unlock. The contact started the vehicle in the hope that it would unlock the trunk. When the contact began to walk towards the rear of the vehicle, it began to roll despite the emergency brake being activated. The vehicle continued to roll over a large curb and landed into the foundation of a neighboring home. The vehicle received damage to the rear bumper and undercarriage. The contact was able to drive the vehicle back home. The contact stated that the brake and drive train warning indicators were illuminated. The contact notified the insurance company and dealer. The dealer was unable to identify the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 14,000.
The car just randomly caught on fire while off in my driveway. Noticed a weird sound outside looked out and noticed the windshield wipers were going even though the car was off and I hadn't driven it. Opened the door to bellows of smoke coming out. fire department was called and had to rip it apart to get to the fire which was under the steering wheel in the left side
Bought mini from carvana a january 2020 and have had too many problems. Car overheated on 48, had 2 new cylinders put in, 2 weeks later, due to many notable problems this car has had, all coolant leaked out and was quoted by mini dealership $9,000 to fix a problem that was caused by a recall not listed for my year
Vehicle was in motion on a highway and, after going over several pot holes, the engine temperature warning light came on. The engine power was reduced, and the engine failure light also appeared. This is when i pulled over into the off ramp, and the vehicle came to a sputtering stop. I placed the car in neutral and pushed it to the dirt side lane of the off ramp. I opened the hood, smelled something burning, and saw smoke coming from the engine. I could see burnt circuits, burnt plastic, and coolant leaking all over the engine and exposed wiring. Had it not been for immediately exiting onto the off ramp, the vehicle would have stopped in the middle of the highway without warning. I could have almost died because of the fire; this faulty engineering by bmw/mini has already taken the life of a driver in south korea. Bmw issued a recall of the 2012 mini cooper s roadster, but when i had the car towed to one of their service centers, the technicians were unaware of this manufacturing defect and stated that the repair parts are unavailable. I see that my vehicle has been recalled, but when i type in my vin, no recall is attached to my vehicle. Bmw/mini is taking no action; they are harming and killing drivers of its vehicles.

Footwell Control Module - (FRM) was dead after battery dead. It had a safety recall repot 23V-337 on the same model and year of my vehicle BUT mine is not on the list? A extended warranty was found till 2021 and mine had problem since 2014, and I paid dealership for inspection for at least 6 times, and it was still not got replaced till it was dead completely currently.
Tl* the contact owns a 2011 mini cooper. While driving, a burning odor entered the vehicle through the air vents and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine light sensor and the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to ray catena mini of westchester (located at 543 tarrytown rd, white plains, ny 10607, (914) 347-6464) where it was diagnosed that the intake boot and all the connectors for the turbo hoses melted. In addition, a leak was found in the oil hose. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fees. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 18v248000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failures and provided case number: 11105312. The approximate failure mileage was 85,000.
I drove 20 feet out of my garage and smelt a surfer smell. I put my convertible top down, put the car in park walked around to see if it was smoking or if the smell was coming from the engine or mufflers. When i could not detect where the smell was coming from, i put the top back up, closing it and turned the car off. I locked the car and went into my garage. As i looked back i saw sparks coming from the vent on the hood. I yelled for my husband & as he looked for fire extinguisher i called 911 & filmed the car. Within 30 seconds the car was on fire & with 90 second totally up in flames. Nothing but the shell of the car remained. The fire department, police & fire marshal were present. Arson was ruled out. I had a recall part installed at the dealer in 2012 for potential fires. The car was stationary in my driveway shut off. It had not been driven for 20 hours prior to the fire.
The sensors do not work. The car does not tell me when oil is needed, when my tires are low. No sensors work in the car. The dealer, Mini Of Edison, states FOUND INTERNAL HARDWARE FAULTS. But are stating its costs 2300.00 to fix. This is a huge safety issue.Ive been having to guess when my oil is low and when my tires are low. This has been going on since September 2023, the car was only bought in May 2023.

Tl* the contact owned a 2012 mini cooper. While driving approximately 20 mph, the contact crashed into the preceding vehicle after it stopped without warning. The vehicle was merged into a parking lot, where the contact noticed some minor damage to the front of the vehicle and smoke appeared under the hood as a fire started. The fire department extinguished the fire. The vehicle was destroyed. There were no injuries. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000. The vin was not available.
I made a right turn from the main street, into the parking lot of a strip mall, then an immediate left turn, and another right turn into the right angle parking slot. All the while having my foot on the brakes, i started to shift into park, when it was in the right spot. The mini instead coming to a stop, revved up, jumped the curb and hit the store in the front. The air bags deployed. I had my foot on the brakes really hard, all the time but the brake pedals were locked up. It would not move up or down. Sat hard on the floor! When the tow truck came, the brakes were still locked up and the gear was in park and couldn't be moved from there. The seat belts couldn't be retracted either. Mini engineer claims that there is nothing wrong with the car and i can safely drive it after the body is repaired. I am having a difficult time with this conclusion. The car's brakes and gear were locked up, and had to be lifted on a flatbed and taken to the repair shop; i still maintain something within the car malfunctioned. *tr

While driving for about 30 minutes on the highway, my mini cooper shut off completely, i was able to pull onto the shoulder and that is when smoke started coming from the engine, within 6 minutes my whole engine was engulfed in flames, car totaled. Insurence inspectors couldn't figure out a cause. One of the fire fighters said it looks like it started near the water pump. There are recalls on other models for this problem, but not mine. My mini hasn't been worked on since last year when i got new tires, i also keep up with every oil change. *tr

Lower Engine Support and Passenger Engine Mount damaged as per routine inspection by dealer in Feb2025. Never diagnosed before. Repair done by independent service center in Feb2025 and I have receipt of approximately 1K. Also, since 22feb2025, I am not able to add fuel to the tank because the pump stops constantly and causes spill of fuel. This can cause fire. Never happened before. Tried at least 4 different gas station and same result. Dealer charges over $200 to perform inspection/diagnostics. Not done yet. Repairs to fuel tank are in the thousands. No warning in the car dashboard for none of the issues. Car with less than 80k miles.
The contact owns a 2015 Mini Cooper. The contact stated that after the vehicle was taken to a local dealer for a routine oil change, the mechanic also determined that the valve cover gasket needed to be replaced and an unknown engine software needed to be updated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, and the contact was advised to file a complaint with the NHTSA Hotline. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

I was involved in a car accident on 10/15/2015 which i rear ended a pickup truck. I was going roughly 45-50 mph when the truck in front slammed their brakes which caused me to crash into his rear end of the truck. The front of the car is in bad shape and luckily i was not injured. However, the airbags in the car did not deploy which i find very disturbing.
Tl* the contact owns a 2012 mini cooper. The contact stated that the front driver side air bag abruptly deployed while driving 40 mph. The failure occurred without warning or impact. The contact suffered injuries to the neck, back, and arms, which required medical attention. A police report was not filed. Prior to the deployment, the air bag warning light illuminated. The dealer stated that it was safe to drive the vehicle with the air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The manufacturer inspected the vehicle and concluded that the front driver side air bag deployment was not caused by a manufacturer defect. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 43,000.
The passenger seat occupancy sensor has malfunctioned, causing the vehicle to believe that there is an infant car seat in the front passenger seat. This puts front passengers at risk because the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash. While having body work done at Swartz's Ultimate Collison repair in Lewisburg, it was noted by the technician, however Mini does not cover repair by a non dealer or accept accounting of the defect from a non dealer. I was unaware that the vehicle was nearing the end of it's warranty and waited too long to inquire again. They will not fix it.
I got the air bad warning a few months ago while driving the signal with a lil airbag on my dash board. I called the dealer took it in and the dealer said my car was out of warranty. They didn't check to see if this issue was a recall they just cared about fixing it if i paid them. Since then i get the airbag warning every time the car is on.
Passenger occupancy sensor malfunctions all the time and there are hundreds of claims regarding this issue but was never addressed by the manufacturer The same issue prompted a recall in older models but has not been corrected in newer ones
As per NHTSA there was a recall the replace OC3 SEAT OCCUPANCY MAT but I never received recall notice and just passed 10 years with 40K millage and started getting air bag light, dealer is not replacing it under warranty, if they was a recall they should have replaced my seat earlier so that I would not have this issue today. is there a way to extend warranty to longer time or recall all the cars and replace them so that we do not have to spend 2k to replace it? "01 11 16_OC3 SEAT OCCUPANCY MAT: LIMITED WARRANTY EXTENSION TO 10 YEARS/120,000 MILES"
The contact owns a 2013 Mini Cooper. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, the air bag warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the passenger's side seat occupancy sensor. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but referred the contact to the NHTSA Hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 106,000.
BMW/MINI have known about a faulty airbag sensor in the seats, yet never did a recall. The passenger side airbag does not operate when someone sits in the seat due to a faulty sensor on the seat cushion. BMW was around $1600 to replace this. Big safety concern if a crash happens and air bag does not go off. Should be a factory recall.
There have been at least 7 write-ups about air bag failure on this model reported to you. When a passenger sits in the seat of my car, with the seat belt on, 01 the airbag light and seat belt light come on. If I have an accident the airbag on the passenger side will not deploy, leading to death or injury to the passenger. This has been reported to a MINI dealership. They will inspect it at my cost to see if it rates as a safety item. It is available for inspection as I can't drive it with a passenger and I can't leave my disabled wife alone at home. The car has 92323 miles on it. [XXX]--- [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
When passenger is seated with safety belt on the seat belt light comes on along with a message that the passenger seat air bag will not deploy.

Tried at least 4 different gas station and same result. Dealer charges over $200 to perform inspection/diagnostics. Not done yet. Repairs to fuel tank are in the thousands. No warning in the car dashboard for none of the issues. Car with less than 80k miles.
The fuel filling nozzle turns off repeatedly while trying to fill the fuel tank and spills out causing a safety and environmental hazard, regardless of the pump being used. As a result, no fuel goes into the gas tank, instead it goes all over the car and the ground.
Fuel tank causes gas pump to click off after dispensing a tenth gallon of gasoline. Gas spills from gas tank while removing pump creating a safety and environmental hazard. Fuel tank will not accept gas at pump. No warning lamps, messages, or symptoms were present prior to the failure. Mini Cooper dealership stated that service valve in tank has failed and entire fuel tank must be replaced.
When refueling, fuel is rejected after dispensing about 1/8 US gallons, about 4 oz. Of course, fuel spills are a hazard - both in possibly of fire, and to the environment - by contaminating ground water. Dealer said that there are several solenoid operated valves and replaced fuel tank and fill pipe, a cost to me of $2400.00. There are many reports of this on social media, one person suggested holding the fuel nozzle upside down which made a larger spill.
When refueling, nozzle kept shutting off, a gallon was pumped after nine attempts, also fuel erupted as the fill tube was filled with gas. reluctant to drive this car not knowing how much gas is in the tank. The needle shows less than 1/4 and miles remaining fluctuates between 80 and 110 miles. We are told that this problem exists in many mini automobiles, dealer has replacement gas tanks, but same problem exists Parking our Mini, indication of "roll back" is possible when car is parked. Shifter unit was replaced due to torsion spring.
The fuel filling nozzle turns off repeatedly while filling the fuel tank, regardless of position of nozzle, pressure used, station used. In an attempt to remedy, Mini Service Technicians replaced tank vent valve but it did not correct the issue. I am unable to fill my gas tank.
I can not put gas into my car. I have had the charcoal canister replaced. I am now being told that I need a new fuel tank. I’ve also been informed that this is a reoccurring problem in 2015 mini coopers.
Fuel tank shuts off the gas pump no matter how much gas is in the tank. Faulty fuel tank vent (purge) value is causing the issue. This is a known issue on Mini's. A voluntary recall has been issued for 2016 Mini's, but this problem is also happening on 2015 Mini's. Dealership as well as another auto service store has replicated the issue. Check engine light is lit up as well.

12/19/19 i brought my vehicle to have 2 front tires replaced had them mount and balanced and a front alignment done. The dealer also completed multi point vehicle check. I get home. The car sits still saturday. I start it saturday at 1:30pm and get ready to pull out of drive way. Warning light comes on dash stating battery is not charging. Stop carefully. Consult nearest service center. I contacted service advisor. He stated to drive it back and they will give a loaner. I said no! The vehicle isn't drive able and i don't feel safe. He stated they close in 30 minutes. I wanted to speak to upper management. No one was available he stated. I said i would call back monday december23 2019. I spoke to receptionist who makes appointments. She had available spot on thursday december26,2019. I told her i will have it towed that thursday. I get there told them about the message that came on dash. I was going to have to replace battery and needed a brake flush and oh by the way looks like your pulley went out. The vehicle only had 37,502 miles. I have never heard of a pulley being replace at this mileage. I contacted customer relations for bmw mini that friday. They said they will contact in 1 business day. They did say there is an open case. They will contact jan 7. I was in a loaner for 6 days. I spoke to service manager tues 31,2019 which was new year's eve. She stated the dealership will give 20% discount and bmw mini will still contact me if they are going to assist. I mentioned to them about the defected pulleys on 2002 thru 2006 models. They will look into it.
Premature clutch failure 34,500 miles, while the dealer repaired the problem under warranty they informed me about the clutch being too small to downshift the car to slow down. I didn't spend northwards of 40k on a sports car only to be told all slowing down should be done with the braking system. You buy a stick shift car to be able to do these things normally. To be told by the dealers service representative the clutch is inadequate for this normal driving practice was quite a surprise had the salesperson told me this i would not have purchased the vehicle. I guess the real surprise will be when it goes out again and i have to pay to have a design flaw repaired at my own expense. This clutch problem seems to be prevalent in the all wheel drive version where apparently the friction coefficient of 4 wheels to the pavement exceeds that of the clutch.
While in bumper to bumper traffic car lunged while accelerating. Was at a complete stop then lifted off brake and began to feed in gas when the transmission shifted from first to second (automatic transmission) the car lunged or jumped forward. The action was so severe my first action after hitting brakes was to check rear view mirror thinking i had been rear ended. Car has 19700 miles and went into ottos mini for evaluation and repair of other issues and was told transmission is in normal working order. However my service adviser told me that she personally had experienced the same issues and that its due to too much technology in the cars.

Freeze plug randomly popped out while driving causing vehicle to stall in the middle of traffic almost causing a major accident and or death. Research indicates there has been numerous complaints by Mini Cooper owners experiencing the same issue of a premature unexplained failure with no action taken from Mini to mitigate this safety issue. I’m lucky to be alive.

Blinkers stopped working and windows are no long rolling down
The footwell module that controls the lights, brake lights windows and dashboard is faulty on all mini cooper of this module. Every time I change my battery or disconnect it the module brakes and the dealership knows this problem and still want to charge 1300 dollars to fix it it is a safety and hazard issue.
2013 mini cooper both right and left tail light assemblies have required replacement at the dealer due to melted plastic adjacent to light bulb contacts. Quoting the dealer service record "found left tag light bulb out and right lower brake light melted. Replaced tag light bulb and right tail light assy." that service was performed at a mini dealer in 2018. The same problem and same repair was performed at a different mini dealer in 2017. Similar problems have been reported on this website (nhtsa vehichle complaints), and the problem was familiar to the service personnel at both dealerships. Mini has a standard practice of issuing "warranty extensions" for known "defects in materials or workmanship" which cover the expense (both parts and labor) for replacement and repair as necessary, but does not rise to the level of a full recall. Mini also keeps detailed, non-public, records tracking the frequency of common vehicle repairs. I would recommend that this issue receive the next level of investigation to determine if either a warranty extension or a full recall is indicated. Thank you for taking the time to read this note.
The driver's side rear brake light bulb harness melted. This necessitates the replacement of the entire light assembly unit. I understand that this has been a recurrent problem for mini for a number of years.
i bought the car in august 2023 from carmax they were aware of recall , my car has no headlight, brake lights, door states open when not , windows do not roll down, cannot use alarm, will not lock, smells hot , i spoke with mini cooper and there is no remedy this is my only car i transport my grandchildren to and from school , i lost house due to a fire a yr ago , and lost everything , and see that a fire is at risk. mini cooper says nothing they can do because no remedy, carmax should not of sold this car with a recall .
My car is affected by this recall and I have no turn signals, dash lights, high beams, working windows, security system, or backup sensors. There are also codes thrown which prevents me from renewing my registration due to DEQ test failure. The dealership can’t do anything and BMW North America has done nothing to remedy things.
My driver side brake light keeps melting. The plastic the the light build screws into is actually melting t the brake light bulb. I've paid mini to repair the damage and the same issues has surfaced. The driver's side brake light does not work at all.
Rear brake light burnt and melted. It was repaired and now it melted and burnt again but has caused further damage requiring the whole taillight needing replacement.
Brake light failed, bulb could not be removed from inside the vehicle. Dealer said the complete assembly would need to be replaced. Upon removing the assembly, the fixture was reviewed to find where excesive heat had melted the connection to the bulb (same ones used in bmws that melted the wiring harness back in 2003). I repaird the the assembly by soldering the sockets to the board such that it did not depend on a piece of plastic for pressure contact. It works, but when a bulb truely burns out, the assembly must be removed to change the bulb.
My Mini Cooper has been showing repeated warnings stating “Start-off assistance inactive. Caution: vehicle may roll back!” for some time. This issue appears to relate to an existing recall involving potential electrical and starter/rollaway defects. The vehicle also has a persistent front parking light malfunction and intermittent electrical issues with the windows, which stop mid-way and roll back down automatically when the car shifts gears or moves slightly. In addition, the battery repeatedly dies, even though it was replaced with a brand-new one a few months ago. This suggests an underlying electrical drain or short, which could increase the risk of electrical fire or vehicle failure while driving. These malfunctions create significant safety concerns, as the vehicle may roll backward when stopped on an incline and could pose a fire risk due to the known recall. The car has not been safe to drive. The closest Mini dealership (Flow Mini of Raleigh - about 2 hours away) confirmed that the recall is open but refused to provide or authorize a tow, even after I explained that the vehicle could not be safely driven to their location about 2 hours away. The problem has been ongoing for several years, worsening over time. Warning messages appear intermittently but frequently, especially during start-up or when stopped on slopes. Mini USA has not inspected or repaired the vehicle, and their representatives have stated they will not assist with transport to the dealership despite the known recall risk. I called MINI USA directly, and recorded the whole ordeal. I was forwarded to 5 different departments, and the last person stated that because my car is out of warranty that there’s nothing they can do to help me - that any tow I opt for would have to be out-of-pocket. I was in the middle of explaining to her that my car has these very specific warnings and issues associated with this recall that is solely the fault of Mini, and she hung up on me.

*tr
Without any warning lamps,The vehicle started pulling left when the brakes were applied a certified mechanic looked at it and feels that is the due to a defective DSC/ABS control unit. The unit hasn't been otherwise inspected but is available for inspection
The proportioning value that controls brake function had a catastrophic failure and caused the brake calipers especially the left front to lock suddenly. The caused the left front wheel to lock and caused the car to pull hard to left and become difficult if not impossible to control. The car pulled hard left and risked the car moving uncontrollably into on coming traffic. The failed part was saved and is available for inspection. The safety of the driver(my wife) was put at risk during the loss of control of the car. Other cars in the area were also put at risk simply due to the loss of control of our car. The problem was confirmed by the independent service center. The vehicle was not drivable and was towed to the dealership. The dealership thought the root cause was the brake master cylinder. This turned out not to be the case. The root cause was the failed proportioning valve. This caused the calipers to lock. The discs, rotors, calipers and proportioning value were replaced. There were no warning lights and the car had been taken for regular service at the dealership which was included in the purchase of the car. We were told that there is no warning light for a failure of this part.

I purchased my mini countryman on february 14, 2015 from the local mini dealership. At approx. 1447miles, 7 month into ownership, i began having trouble when turning on the car (the car was stationary) the warning lights came on for brakes, abs and traction control and remained on until car was turned of repeatedly or diven for a mile and then turned of. I took my car back to the dealership for repairs on: 10/02/2015 no faults in the electrical system was found and i was asked to return when it reoccurs. 12/03/15 a fault memory and faulty r/f wheel speed sensor was diagnosed, sensor was not in stock. 12/04/15 i returned with my car to have the faulty wheel speed sensor exchanged. 12/05/15 to 12/10/15 faulty relucter wheel on the r/f wheel hub, wheel speed sensor readings off, signal scoped and r/f wheel hub replaced. 12/28/15 and ongoing. On 1/05/2016 mini usa has given me verbal assurance that i will get the car replaced with a new mini of my choosing.
Coming up to an intersection, the car started to slow normally. Then the abs kicked in and the car did the shudder like when the abs is active. Then the abs turned off and the brakes went spongy. The car rolled into the intersection through the stop sign. This happened several more times. We brought the car to mini of austin in texas. They couldn't find anything wrong. No codes were thrown. My wife too the car back, and drive back to salt lake city, utah. She experienced subsequent identical brake failures. We took the car into mini of murray. They have had the car a month, and cannot duplicate the issue. Corporate mini will not authorize any part replacement at all. They want us to take the car back. I don't feel that is a smart or safe idea.
Handbrake harness not routed as designed. From the picture you can see the harness not inside the clip. This makes the handbrake harness short from point to point. Which will lead to my rear passenger side brake always on. And also, it will cause a serious safety issue if i want to use my handbrake to stop my vehicle. The force applied on passenger side is way more than drive side ( it was installed correctly ) . And it may lead my passenger side handbrake wiring harness broken ( because of the incorrect routing ) i found it out when my brake light in on. My front brake still working for another 1100 miles while my rear brake sensor tell me i need to change my brake . We change the rear passenger brake and found out its difficult to clip the handbrake wiring harness to right hole. Then we track the wiring done. It's shocks me . The routing is 100% incorrect. You can see the correct handbrake hole is empty.
Driving 45 mph on busy city four-lane road, i braked gradually in approach to red light, which is my normal braking style. Car did not come to a complete stop--brakes only worked to a point but did not completely stop car; simultaneously engine revved to very high rpm. I threw transmission into park and turned off ignition lest my car ram car ahead of me. Very frightening. At previous two lights i had noticed that brakes were acting funny, not bringing car to a complete stop but i had left plenty of braking distance and was able to let car roll to a stop, in spite of brakes not effecting a complete stop . At those two lights the runaway engine (high rpm) did not occur or i would have pulled over right then. However, engine revving to high rpm has also occurred occasionally when pulling into garage but i had not given this a lot of thought because i have quickly turned off ignition. Now i know it's very dangerous situation. Of course i am not driving it but am having it towed to dealer for repair. The car has been serviced regularly at dealer and has 24,239 miles on it. There has never been a necessity for repairs on this mini cooper clubman.
Tl*the contact owns a 2012 mini cooper. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed, there was a hissing noise. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who stated that it was due to salt and should go away over time. However, the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to another dealer. The technician diagnosed that the brake pads and rotors needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown but the current mileage was 18,954.

Passenger side airbag light on with no one in seat, had it checked, the repair shop stated that there is a seat sensor fault, the code is 93c3(passenger seat occupancy detector). I have done some research on this and it seems that this a common problem, but there hasn't been any recalls by Mini, and if there is an accident the airbag may not deploy. I was told to by the dealer that it will cost $2300 for parts and labor.
Warning lamp for "airbag system failed" illuminated one day while driving on a straight street "in town" approx 25mph. At first light went off if i buckled passenger seatbelt (even when seat was empty) now it won't go off even doing that... Also doesn't matter if driving at high or low speeds, road types, turning, stopping, parked, driving, passenger in rider's seat, no riding passenger, etc, it will illuminate (& i never place anything on my passenger seat). Took to a mechanic - he checked & provided code 9435. Stated airbags might not deploy when this warning lamp is illuminated. Said this is a common problem with mini coopers & is a safety issue that he thinks probably should be covered under a recall. Contacted mini dealership - said no recall for my vehicle. From what i have found there are almost 100,000 other minis that have had a recall for this same problem, however, they tell me my vehicle is not included in the recall - want to charge me minimally $65 just to re-diagnose the code, then labor & parts to fix! Called mini customer service - told me no recall for my vehicle & they referred me here.
Passenger side airbag is randomly disabled (with warning light/tone) when my 63# dog is sitting in the seat. Cause is a faulty "passenger seat occupant mat" that others have reported will cost over $1500 to replace. This has happened numerous times but only while driving so can't really get a picture of the warning light safely.
Passenger seatbelt element sensor malfunctioned. We had to replace the entire passenger seat cushion with new sensor for a cost of $1843.00. A 2012 vehicle should nor require a new seat through ordinary use. Note:mini seatbelt sensor is molded into the cushion requiring a new cushion and not just replacing the sensor resulting in the high cost to the consumer.
trouble code: 93C3 ACSM/MRS: Seat-occupancy detector, passenger
There is a known issue with the passenger seat occupancy sensor that trips the airbag/seatblet lights and, I assume, doesn't turn off the airbag in the applicable situations.
My vehicle started experiencing mechanical issues at 78000 miles. These issues included the water pump, thermostat housing and most concerning the passenger airbag system. I was able to afford the out of pocket expenses for the thermostat and water pump which was around 2500$ i later got a letter about the water pump regarding a class action. Which i'm hoping to be reimbursed for. So the airbag ... =( ..i've made several attempts to have mini willingly look into the complaint with the airbag system. I cannot get a reasonable response from them regarding my complaint. I am directed to go to my local mini dealer. When having the other repairs done they would not permanently enable the airbag system but could "look" at it for 125$ since others have quoted this repair costing upwards of 2000$ i declined. I had to pay for the other repairs. Many other vehicles have an over ride for this being a key. I don't understand why this isn't being addressed with previous recalls and many consumer complaints. The passenger airbag system comes on and off intermittently as described in other complaints. I'm only adding my complaint in hopes that it helps myself and others resolve the issue. I want to also note that i purchased several warranties with this vehicle. Which were not honored and cannot get a refund for. One warranty included damage to the seats and would be repaired. I feel like these warranties should be reimbursed since no work is being done in regards to all the issues i've had.

The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 51,000.
