How to read a Jaguar S-Type VIN — every digit explained

Every Jaguar S-Type carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this S-Type.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your S-Type VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

My wife and i were given a replacement jaguar s-type on 05/03/2005 by smith co. Motor cars of charleston, wv. After they were unable to repair a jaguar x-type that we had bought on 08/26/2004. On 08/05/2005 the car was first presented for a scheduled 10,000 mile maintenance to jaguar of south bay, 3111 pacific coast highway, torrance, ca. Since then, the car has been returned to them for more than 8 (eight) times, without satisfactory repair. Problems include: faulty gas tank latch, rhs exhaust hanging lower and scraping pavement, hard transmission shifts, faulty remote transmitter, judder from steering wheel, knocking noise from the engine that ran sluggish, replaced rack & pinion several times, car out of alignment, injectors dirty, rhs lug nut broken because of, according to tech., non lubrication at factory, jerky gear shifting from 3rd. To 4th. Gears, creaking noise in sunroof and headliner, faulty cd player, faulty power steering pump, faulty air bag light on dash, faulty passenger side fog lamp, faulty rack and pinion valve, leaking washer fluid reservoir, no warnings or messages during these malfunctions from dash instruments, except air bag lamp, faulty bluetooth hands free, etc.etc. We had told the techs. Jaguar would not even give me the free tow that i was entitled to when i called them to inform of the accident and i had to drive the car to my house. I had both my kids ( son 31/2 yrs. Old and daughter 4 months old) in the car with me. On 05/10/2006, we hired an attorney who is still negotiating with ford motor co. Who have taken over jaguar. *nm

2000 S-Type

On several occasions i've had problems with my 2000 s type jaguar. The transmission causes many safety problems. Such as not shifting, hesitation etc. Which could be a major safety issue while driving on the hwy. Once my fiance was driving the vehicle and the hesitation of the transmission caused him to slam into the curb causing major damage to the front end. I've also had the transmission gasket replaced at the dealership. Know its back in the shop awaiting a new transmission. Jaguar is not taking any responsibility of these problems. Several other jaguar owners have experienced similar problems. Thank you for your time. [xxx]. *nm

2008 S-Type

On 5/8/23 called JLR NA on transmission issues fault codes C0003A(abs) P0500 and PO721 gear box and speed sensors. They recommended not to drive and have towed and connected to JLR road side, but $225 to closest JLR dealer, so called back and JLR recommended Jaguar Plus and T&S Auto Clinic, locally. Plus does not do transmissions, so T&S called for tow $105.Open case on 5/9/23 #[XXX] and told T&S don't proceed with shop work, until we came in and authorized. Issue with them , no receipts , no written estimates that were requested. Here is issue: CLUNK in automatic PRND . Yellow check engine, abs and instrument displays"abs fault" "gear box" " output shaft" and many others. However if the DSC is disabled, like on heavy snow; and slowly shift P R N D then J shift to 2,3,4,5 no CLUNK just normal bumps in and out N. No speed issues my husband says. But I am 77 and have lung cancer and cannot work it without the D automatic . Many emails and calls to JLR who set up appointments with JLR dealers 25-50 miles away. All say they have to run diagnosis for two hours, $500 non- refundable fee, even though the instrument two green displays give most of the faults keep flashing. Transmission shop day have cheap ABS RR changed , and scheduled, some report that cures all faults, since JLR software get confused , revs engine, upshifts, down shifts and CLUNK. Solution: Husband says start engine, let idle down ,warn up, press DSC off, ease from P to R and you hear shift , then stop in N and the slowly D, the immediately in J shifter go through 5,4,3,2 keep foot on brake at all times. Result no CLUNK, but small normal bumps.(Keeps lock in gear, no down shifts Two JLR dealers say OOS and TCM internal new $14,000 or one said $4,200 plus labor warrantee 1 year. 2008 S-Type

Jaguar s-type sedan 2003 was subject to recall r-513 but not limited to this. This vehicle experienced major malfunctions in performance with gear box and braking systems in which it could not be properly shifted out of park, lost rpm, parking brake failure, abs warning lights and major engine light indicator warnings. The car could not be safely driven and suffered a major breakdown with less than 9500 miles, flatbedded to sportique motors in huntington, ny on 12/10/2004, returned on 12/15/2004 only to be flatbedded again on 12/17/2004. A new computer was not installed in the vehicle as promised at that time, and the computer was simply reflashed. At 33,948 miles out of warrenty on may 26, 2010 this vehicle suffered the same major breakdown as described above and was again flatbedded to huntington land rover jaguar, formerly sportique jaguar, huntington, ny. The car could not properly be shifted out of park, lost rpm and could not be driven safely.the dealership worked on the car four (4) times declaring the problem solved on three occasions from may 26, 2010 until it was flat bedded back a forth time on 07/22/10 only to be told the car needed a new "park sensor module" and new "transmission sensor" at a cost of over $4000 dollars with labor. My attempts to obtain assistance from jaguar central and huntington jaguar based on my contention that the vehicle was never properly fixed when under warranty resulted in continual refusals by these parties with claims by the dealership that a faulty truck seal and water leak that certainly did not exist at 9500miles necessitated the costly repairs (the transmission sensor is inside the sealed transmission). My complaints to the dmv ( with lookback of 90 days) has resulted in their findings of a dealership mis-diagnosis . The car remains incapacitated and unsafe to drive. I respectfully request an investigation into all repairs and histories of similar models related to nhtsa recalls but not limited to this. *tr

2008 S-Type

Bought a new jaguar s-type in 2001. On 8/9/04 with 10723 miles the transmission failed and was replacement. On 12/29/06 took car in because of transmission issues (27302 miles). I was told the car was operating within specs. On 7/7/07 took car in again with complaint regarding transmission (32625 miles) and again was told the cars transmission was operating within specs. On april 17, 2009 while driving, the transmission failed, and car went into limp mode. Car was towed. The jaguar repair shop stated the transmission failed and needed to be replaced (at ~45,000 miles, note that this is only 35,000 miles after first replacement). *tr

2008 S-Type

Recently (10/16/08) purchased a 2001 s-type 4.0 with 74316 mi. 2nd day i had it transmission started slipping. Within 1 week had to be rebuilt. All coils replaced and #4 & #5 keep going bad. Dealership stated coils were broken. Sent home with broken coils. Window regulators needed to be replaced. Check engine light on dealership stated no problem. Poor service, poor quality. *tr

2007 S-Type

I purchased this 2007 jaguar s-type in nov 2013. Approximately 1 month ago i started having an issue with the electronic parking brake not releasing itself when the car was shifted out of the "park" position. It takes a good 15-20 minutes of driving the vehicle and applying the brakes several times before the electronic parking brake will disengage itself. It has gotten to the point now that the brake pads have worn to the point of initial grinding noise being heard, which is a clear indicator of excessive wear. I did some research online a couple of nights ago, so as to confirm if there have been any jaguar s-type "recalls" for this type of problem, and in fact found that there have been many reported instances of them for this exact problem. In fact, the problem can escalate itself if the electronic parking brake were to engage itself on its own while the car is in motion, causing the rear brakes/tires to lock up.....an obvious safety issue. The recall numbers are r166 and r167, but in contacting jaguar corporate customer service, as well as a local jaguar service dealership, i was informed that while my issue appears to be mirroring these prior recalls, there is not an actual recall currently "open" on the 2007 jaguar s-type model year vehicle. This to me seems ridiculous. What should it matter what the manufactured year of the vehicle is? If the problem is the same problem as has occurred on prior year models, why wouldn't the existing recall/s simply be expanded to include the additional model year/s, 2007 in this case? Any assistance/direction in regards to having this matter addressed that could possibly be sent my way would be greatly appreciated. An independent mechanic repaired the radiator and found that most of the components under the hood were not jaguar parts. The parts were jeep, chevrolet, and other brands. Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the vehicle was previously involved in two major crashes. On a separate occasion, the contact found holes in the radiator hoses. In addition, the water pump was cracked and needed to be replaced. Later, while driving less than 35 mph, the brakes failed. A police officer flagged her down and informed her that smoke and sparks were coming from the rear driver's side tire. The independent mechanic stated that the caliper failed. The vehicle began swaying left to right and she lost all control. The vehicle crashed into a median and stopped. The vehicle was damaged, but there were no injuries. After the crash, the contact drove approximately 5 mph until she reached her residence. She exited the vehicle and noticed that the tires were bald and the wiring protruded. She took the vehicle to two different mechanics and they both stated that the lower ball joints were defective on both sides of the vehicle. The dealer advised her to call the manufacturer regarding nhtsa campaign id number 00v359002 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). The manufacturer stated that her vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle has not been repaired. The current mileage was 104,742 and failure mileage was 104,000.

When i bought the car a week later it blew hot air, i was told it only needed freon. I found out later that there was a leak and it is $1200. A week after that the car would not start the dealer picked the car up and said that the battery was dead because i left the radio on, it has happened over 30 times, not true there is something wrong. I have replaced tires at least six times. Tires completely separate. I was driving and car slowed down on freeway and i was almost hit, i pulled over and it stopped and did it again and i had to push the traction control button, almost cost me my life! It now happens when i hit a bump. When i turn the car makes a extremely loud noise, (embarrassing) i was told it is a ball joint and can catch on fire. Engine light has always been on and is now blinking and the car shakes and hesitates. I had to pay to get the brakes fixed 2 months after purchasing. Radio turns on for no reason and runs battery down. I was told i have two leaks in my shocks and it is $1800 each. When i back up and turn the steering wheel vibrates. I can't even use the cigarette lighter to charge my cell because it does not work and has been replaced twice. The remote just stop working and i was charged $100 to reconfigure. The brakes act funny, can't even explain it. This car is unreal, a complete piece of junk. I can't even remember half the stuff i have endured and the money i have spent. *nm

The car was towed to a local foreign auto place and jaguar refuses to repair the ball joint. Claiming they will only take the claim from a registered jaguar dealer. So the car was towed today to momentum jaguar on the sw freeway and i was told that the ball joint was replaced on the drivers side in april 2001 and it broke again???in less that 43000 miles we have had 2 defective ball joints?? And the passenger side is defective as well and needs to be changed!! This is a serious defect and jaguar is disclaiming any and all responsibility...it also has a/c problems and electrical problems. The sensors do not work and were replaced last year. The window regulators broke and were charged to me.. The rear passenger side of the car is falling off ....it is always overheating . February 4, 2009 our s type r jaguar was the victim of a rapid acceleration/runaway. On february 3 the electronic throttle shut the vehicle off when it was stopped on three or four occasions. The next day, as the vehicle was being driven out of the driveway, the throttle stuck in the open position causing the car to careen out of control. It was towed to hornberg jaguar in hollywood and the service writer tittered and laughed at my fiance. Thereafter i received a phone call the next day telling me that the vehicle had suffered front-end damage and that we should call our insurance company. I told her i would have my technical expert who was a product liability witness for me in trials many years ago, pick up the vehicle and tell me what had really happened. I then received a communication that jaguar was going to send a technical engineer to inspect the vehicle. Nine days later while i was out of state, i received a phone call with a message that the "codes" had been downloaded, there was nothing wrong with the car. There never was an investigation, not even an interview of the driver, no photographs taken of the damage pattern, and to make matters worse, the vehicle brain box was downloaded and then erased. My technical expert tells me the erasure was intentional and was designed to cover up the code which would have indicated an electronic throttle malfunction. My technical expert is alberto ferroni at ital meccanica, 714-893-5096. If no problem existed why did they lie to me and tell me they were sending a technical expert to look at the car, never even interview the driver, and then intentionally erase the brain box? Moreover the dealers initial intake form which was not signed by my fiance is false and fraudulent and makes no reference whatsoever to the runaway. It makes no reference to my providing the service writer with a detailed statement on the following day. *tr

Jaguar refuses to put in writing that this car is safe to drive. Another indication of a malfunction is that 5 days before the accident i re- leased this 2003 car. Dealer looked at the mileage on it and wrote it on the lease. Then 5 days later when it crashed & got towed to the body shop, the body shop wrote down the mileage upon arrival. ( car was not able to be driven). My insurance appraiser and their investigator also wrote down that same mileage number. The odometer had registered 440 miles more than on the date of the lease, yet i had actually only driven it a maximum of 100 miles! Dealer & jaguar said they have no way to diagnose this & put blame on clerical error. No clerical error could explain 440 miles! Jaguar cannot explain this, so they ignored i!. They can't explain why the car did not stop and accelerated, so they blame that on driver error! Noticing so many other complaints from jaguar owners on your web-site for the very same thing. I was driving on an internal road ~45mph, not accelerating , just maintaining speed. The engine basically shut down, and i had to pull onto the shoulder. The car was barely moving even though the accelerator was depressed to the floor, engine light on, as well as "engine systems fault, parkbrake fault, dsc not available" message showing up on the dash. I restarted the car but now the battery light came on in addition to the other issues mentioned before and the car battery drained out completely and went limp. I got the car jump started and even then it showed a "abs fault". I waited for 30 mins with the engine running and then finally drove it back to my house. This has happened to me atleast 5 times in the last 1 month. Online forums says that this is a throttle sensor issue and its a common enough problem that jaguar needs to recall and fix these cars. I am very perplexed that a car would just shut down on the road, put itself into "limp mode" and be absolutely fine an hour later. *tr

*nm

Gears, creaking noise in sunroof and headliner, faulty cd player, faulty power steering pump, faulty air bag light on dash, faulty passenger side fog lamp, faulty rack and pinion valve, leaking washer fluid reservoir, no warnings or messages during these malfunctions from dash instruments, except air bag lamp, faulty bluetooth hands free, etc.etc. We had told the techs. *tr

I was ready to park, i hadn't even had a chance to take off seat belt or turn off ignition when there was a sudden acceleration. Car took off like a bat out of hell. Stepped on brake, car would not stop. Finally it stopped at embankment with the help of a chamisa tree. Car was taken to only jaguar repair in new mexico, that being melloy jaguar in albuquerque. It was taken there twice, the assessment no problem with car; no codes could relate to sudden acceleration, blame was on me, with melloy stating it could have been me stepping on gas and brake at same time. Lame excuse, i should have had the code machine on me; i have driven for over thirty eight years and have never had a problem with sudden acceleration. My mother was with me when this happened. It was a miracle that we were not hurt. This car was purchased in november of 2006, it was a used car. Car had approximately 25,500 miles. From the time we purchased vehicle, we had put approximately 11,000 miles in a year when car started acting up. This summer, car, when stopped, started to take off on it's own. Car in front of me stopped it. Daughter was with me. Husband also had an incident. After everything i've read with nhtsa, i am of the belief that this will not be solved, but rather blamed on human error. Eventhough, i believe that this will be the conclusion, i believe, with clear conscience that i tried to save lives. On one last note, i have learned that when you think that there is a problem, try to bring a solution. I think the main problem is with the cruise control which is also linked to the throttle position sensor. I think the problem is with the computer telling vehicle to open at full throttle when the vehicle is at full stop. This can just happen randomly. *tr

On my 2000 s-type 4.0 i have had two transmissions replaced and is in need of a third. Jaguar's position (from corporate), that it is not unusual for a transmission to go under 50,000 miles, however, they refuse to put it in writing. There are probably hundreds if not thousands of owners going through the same problem. On every website there are complaints about failing transmissions. Jaguar definitely is aware of the problem but offers no assistance. I am willing to bet there is some corporate memo regarding how to cover this up. *nm
