How to read a Jaguar XK VIN — every digit explained
Every Jaguar XK carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this XK.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your XK VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

What's wrong. Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 XK (XKR and XKR-S) vehicles manufactured August 24, 2012, to June 10, 2014, and equipped with a 5.0L engine. The tire placard has incorrect information for the spare tire stating "none" for the inflation pressure of the spare wheel. Thus, these vehicles do not comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110, "Tire Selection and Rims for Passenger Cars."
Risk. If the recommended pressure for the spare tire is not provided, the tire may not be properly inflated which may result in its failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
Fix. Jaguar will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and, as necessary, attach a corrected tire placard label stating the tire size and pressure, free of charge. The recall began on August 29, 2014. Owners may contact Jaguar customer service at 1-800-452-4827. Jaguar's number for this recall is J041.

Steering:hydraulic Power Assist:hose, Piping, And Connections
What's wrong. Jaguar is recalling certain model year 2010 xk and xf vehicles manufactured from june 27, 2009, through march 10, 2010. The power assist steering (pas) pipes have been supplied with zinc-nickel plating that does not meet fully the corrosion protection requirements of jaguar's engineering specification. After an extended period of time in service, corrosion of the pas pipes will occur that may lead to pin-holing of the pipe.
Risk. Pin-holing of the pas pipes could allow pressurized power steering fluid to leak into the under-hood and engine bay area. A loss of power steering fluid will result in a loss of power assist steering. Also, that fluid may ignite if it comes into contact with an ignition source or a surface at sufficiently high enough temperature, causing a vehicle fire.
Fix. Dealers will replace the power steering fluid pipes with parts manufactured to the required corrosion protection specification. This service will be performed free of charged. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before june 6, 2011. Owners may contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

What's wrong. Jaguar is recalling 112 my 2007-2009 xk vehicles fitted with run flat tires for failing to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no.138, "tire pressure monitoring system, (tpms)." the tpms warnings were turned off. If the tpms electronic control unit were to send a signal to the instrument cluster to display a tpms warning telltale, the light would not illuminate nor would the supplementary warning text on the instrument cluster message center be displayed.
Risk. Failure to warn of tire deflations is a non-compliance with fmvss 138 and could lead to tire failure and a crash.
Fix. Dealers will update the car configuration file settings to enable the instrument cluster to flag the warning symbols as required by fmvss 138 and associated test in the instrument cluster message center. The remedy will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on or before june 8, 2009. Owners may contact jaguar at 1-201-818-8500.

Vehicle Speed Control 20 Read
Tl* the contact owned a 2006 jaguar x-type. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle accelerated when the brake pedal was applied. As a result, the contact crashed the vehicle into a wall. The passenger side dashboard air bag was the only air bag that deployed. A police report was filed. The contact sustained two broken ribs, lacerations that required stitches, and bruises to the eye and body that required medical attention. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,000..updated 11/03/14 *bf updated 7/9/2015*js
I was traveling on the freeway at 55 mph, as i exited and touched the brakes the car would not slow down, the car gained speed, i pumped the brakes and the car continued to go faster, the car was out of control and crashed into a wall. I was seriously injured and fortunately no one else or other vehicle was involved. I am lucky to be alive. Just prior to impact i turned the wheel to the left causing the car to hit the right front first then the car flipped over. Only the passenger side air bag deployed. The brakes were fairly new with 70% brake lining remaining and the brakes had been inspected one week prior to the accident. It appears to be a combination speed acceleration and brake failure. *tr
On at least 3 occasions, my vehicle had unintended acceleration and applying brakes did not stop the car. I put it in park to stop. I took it to the Foreign performance (mechanic shop) on 11-29-23 after the first time and they said they fixed it. It occurred again on 12-8-23. I again threw it into park. I called the shop on 12-11-23 and they agreed to see it on 12-12-23. I hit a car on 12-11-23 around 11:45 am coming out of my driveway. I had my car towed to mechanic. The other car did not need to be towed. On 12-20-23, Foreign Performance wrote: "Vehicle is driving normally at this time. Checked for any set faults, none stored. Tested the function of the accelerator pedal and the throttle body. Both function normally. There are no bulletin issues by the manufacturer for this problem related to this vehicle. Called the dealership to ask what they are doing to fix this problem with uncontrolled acceleration. They claim to never heard of such a problem and that they no longer work on these vehicles. The problem is well documented nationally and has existed since the vehicle was first produced. Bottom line is that the manufacturer and dealerships have washed their hands on the vehicle. The only advise to give would be to replace the accelerator pedal assembly, the throttle body and the engine control module all together and then program the engine control module to the highest level that is available. Vehicle should not be driven by the customer." Foreign Performance said they would not guarantee my vehicle would never do this again after their recommended repairs of $4027.91. It was Christmas, I was leaving on a planned vacation for two weeks and it was complicated so the vehicle is still at Foreign Performance and no work has been done so all components are available for inspection. No warning lights. Police and State Farm insurance have been involved. Needs body work as well after MVA--estimate of $1100 per state farm.
2006 jaguar x type. Consumer writes in regards to brake/ acceleration problems *tgw the consumer stated when she attempted to apply the brake to stop at a red light, the vehicle continued to accelerate. The consumer stated she applied the brake harder, and consequently, she rear ended another vehicle twice. The consumer stated she experienced sudden acceleration on a previous occasion. *jb
Tl* - the contact owns a 2006 jaguar x-type purchased on november 10, 2006 with 15 miles. The contact explained that early in december 2006 while driving the vehicle between 40 to 45 mph and before coming to a stop sign the vehicle failed to respond when the brakes were applied. The vehicle continued at the same speed. This caused the contact to move on to the emergency lane to avoid hitting another vehicle. The contact continued to apply the brake pedal while on the emergency lane until the vehicle stopped. The contact explained that mid december 2006, while driving at 30 mph on a country road, the brakes did not respond when applied. Even after the brake was applied the vehicle went at the same speed and the cruise control stayed on. After pressing the brake pedal a few times the vehicle was able to stop. At no time was the cruise control ever activated. The third time a similar problem occurred was on 1/20/07. The contact took the vehicle to thomas cadillac and jaguar of hardford on 1/24/07,where an ids was installed, and the pedal switch was adjusted and checked. The contact stated that the cruise control became active on all three occasions and pumping the brake pedal did not disengage the cruise control to allow the vehicle to slow down or properly stop. The failure mileage was 1743 and the current mileage was 2100. On february 16,2007 the contact's vehicle was involved in a crash. The driver was not able to stop while driving at 30 mph and making a right turn, under sunny and dry driving conditions. *ak update 4/9 *tr
Tl* the contact owns a 2010 jaguar xk. The contact stated that the accelerator pedal would become stuck in the open throttle position when traveling at various speeds. The contact would depress the brake pedal firmly to slow the vehicle. She would then shift into neutral because the vehicle would not stop. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but the dealer could not find the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted in regards to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was approximately 6,300 and the current mileage was approximately 6,600.
Tl* the contact owns a 2009 jaguar xk. While driving 45 mph, the contact had to exert force to the brake pedal in order to stop the vehicle. Also, while the accelerator pedal was depressed, the vehicle took three seconds to accelerate. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. Then rear tires spun and smoked did not stop till engine was turned off> check engine light keeps coming on, dealer says it is a sensor, but it has been there several times and light is still coming on. Is this related to toyota recall? *tr
While accelerating to change lanes my vehicle went into wide open throttle. Despite removing my foot from the accelerator and slamming on the brakes the car could only be slowed to 40 mph. Hit the ignition switch which shut the vehicle down including lights. Appeared i would be rear ended therefore hit ignition and vehicle restarted with car still stuck in wot with foot off accelerator. With engine screaming and right foot fully on brake only able to hold car down to 40 mph. Hit ignition again which shut car down but once again following car about to rear end me and therefore once again hit the ignition with same result with car racing forward at wide open throttle despite no engagement of the accelerator. This time after holding the vehicle to about 40 mph with full pressure on the brake with my right foot, and the engine at wide open throttle, all cars had cleared out of the way. I therefore hit the ignition switch which shut down the vehicle. This time i brought the vehicle to a full stop. I then put the car in neutral (up until this time it had been in drive) and pushed the ignition on the car and it started at normal rpm. I then shifted into drive and the engine remained at idle speed. I then , at idle speed, traveled two blocks to my house. The smell of the burning brake pads was terrible. The next morning i had the vehicle transported on a flat bed truck to the local jaguar dealer where the vehicle remains to this date. This all transpired over approximately 300-400 yards over a number of seconds. There was nothing on the floor or in the driving compartment that interfered with the accelerator or brake. *tr
My jaguar xk 2007's accelerator pedal got stuck in the on position. I was traveling at approximately 10-20 miles on hour when i punched the gas pedal to about 60 miles an hour. When i released the gas pedal the acceleration continued. I then applied the brake and the car continued to accelerate. I then pushed the brake to the floor and shifted into sports mode and downshifted. At some point the accelerator must of disengaged as i was able to stop at the approaching intersection. Thank god, no one was hurt and i did not have to crash the car to stop. I subsequently had the car towed to the dealership where i bought the car only 5 weeks ago. They have had the car now for 3 days and have not given me any information about why this occurred. *tr

As my wife was exiting the freeway she pressed on the brake pedal and the vehicle accelerated causing a major crash (totaled) and serious injuries. She tried pumping the brakes and could not slow the vehicle. The vehicle behind her reported in the police report that the car on the exit ramp decelerated and suddenly accelerated. There was a red light at the bottom of the exit ramp, her foot was not on the gas pedal nor did the car mats interfere with the brake pedal. No one else was in the vehicle. The brakes were very well maintained. A search of the internet indicated 2003/2006 jaguar x-type had acceleration problems with other drivers pressing on the brake pedal. *tr

The engine stalled out when we were traveling in the passing lane at speed on an interstate highway. We had to move to the right side shoulder of the highway in front of another vehicle we had just passed and other traffic coming close behind. Definitely a scary situation for us and the other drivers. We were towed to the nearest jag dealer. The dealer had our car for two weeks. They replaced the fuel pump. The service tech's told us that they had never heard of a fuel pump going bad in an x-type. When i questioned the cost of the job, about $1450, i was told that the fuel tank had to be removed to replace the fuel pump. Since that time, we have had a battery replaced, the second for this car since we have owned it, and had to have brake pads replaced, at which time, we were told that the rear brakes had a problem in the calipers that caused the pads to sit further from the discs than they should. This brake problem causes us to use extra pedal travel when braking the car. Then, on dec 9, 2013, the rear differential fell out of the bottom of our car. We were only doing about 20 mph so there was no accident, but we had to be towed to a jag dealer about 30 miles away. My research found that when the fuel tank is removed, the differential would also be removed. This was confirmed by the service writer where my jag was towed. One of the differentials bolts broke where it appeared to have been cracked, as if it had been over torqued when installed! The service writer asked to see the work order for the fuel pump work, so i asked him to look it up. He was not able to find the info, because the work was done out of warranty and the jag system does not record out of warranty work! That is probably why the techs never heard of a fuel pump going bad or a differential falling out of a jag car, even though there have been examples of both reported here! *tr

Transfer case burnout had internal manufacture defects. Temperature coolant sensor over heated and completely melted, causing car to overheat. Driverside door panel clips detoriated. Dimmer light knob had 2 replacements and continued to brake. Car went for servicing, car was fine before servicing, car came back from dealership with break pad and rotor problems. Dealership replaced original car break pads with faulty pads to damage rotors and have me as a customer pay for a service that is not warranted. Car also came back from dealership with an engine tick and tire grinding sound that it never had, dealership service manager said it's normal to get out of engine inspection when these sounds are new sounds that had never existed. Gas cap filler came cracked at time of purchase, car was taken to dealership for that replacement, car was brand new with this defect existing at time of purchase. Car leather seats are deteriorating, fading, peeling, chipping and cracking. Passenger side visor snapped off. Driving traction stability light comes on and off with out being switched on. Car feels like it has no shocks, car rides over small rode bump and feels like it ran into a big whole in the rode, when pavement is completely smooth, dealer says shocks are fine, but the car did not have this effect until it came out of service for the defective transfer case. *tr
My wife and i nearly suffered a fatal accident owing to what turned-out to be a known defect in the jaguar motor management software resident in our and likely every 2007 and later supercharged jaguar engine. Our automobile, with 2800 miles on the odometer, without warning went from accelerating into the idle mode and then remained unresponsive to throttle input placing the automobile in a deadly 't-bone,' fortunately, the driver of the lincoln suv (i can still see the grill in the passenger window and hear my wife's screams), managed to stop his vehicle just inches from the passenger door. Jaguar calls the condition that disabled the car without warning its "limp mode." the 'limp mode' was further described by the dealer and a representative of jaguar management as 'a means of protecting a drive-by-wire engine from damage.' subsequent correspondence and incredibly unproductive and ill-informed with conversations with jaguar officials in new jersey reveals that while they too know this condition exists they intend to do absolutely nothing about it unless a customer complains. Given all the above and a great deal more, i request odi, in the interests of american public safety and to enforce corporate integrity and responsibility laws; require jaguar to conduct a public, immediate recall and permanent repair of all vehicles equipped with the defective software, and further, that jaguar be required to certify in writing to every owner and perspective buyer a permanent fix to the problem has been made and that jaguar will remain accountable for ensuring such for the life of the vehicle. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I have a great deal of incredible documentation on the incident and subsequent discussions with jaguar officials. I look forward to working with odi to quickly and permanently resolve it. *tr

A defect exists in the jaguar xk convertible, which has repeatedly and unpredictably prevented the jaguar from operating, apparently in connection with a concurrent draining of the car's battery. The defect renders the automobile unable to reliably start and deprives the owner of the utility of the vehicle. Despite the vehicle being serviced by jaguar's authorized dealer for this defect on eight separate occasions and replacing the battery and battery monitor multiple times, the defect remains.
First occurrence 11/2010 and beginning of a series of related problems: engine stall at 30 mph; following day the vehicle would not start. Dealer found battery failure installed new battery and reset system. 12/3/2010 - vehicle will not start. Towed to dealer. Dealer states after two days vehicle starts and to remove "key" from ashtray allegedly causing vehicle not to shut down all the way. 8/31/11 vehicle will not start. Dealer finds low battery but no draw and performed power steering recall. 10/31/11 - vehicle will not start. Dealer states batter failed load test and battery replaced. 11/17/2011 - vehicle will not start. Dealer finds service bulletin for intermittent battery draw and performed icm software update. To date, the vehicle continues to lose battery charge. Dealer and manufacturer are not able to fix the problem after more than one year of servicing and trouble shooting. Parked in the garage, sometime for a few days or the next day, the car will not start on occasions. No slow starting or clicking of a bad battery, just a humming then nothing. No reason for the failure. Doesn't act like a low battery. I charged the battery, and jumped it with no success. After several attempts i would go inside and returned in 30 minutes or so,try again; sometime it would start. After several times, in the past two years, of the car not starting i purchased a new battery; same thing. I do nothing to remedy the problem, other than wait a bit and try again. My online research shows that this is happening to often. Many people have there car taken to dealership and they find nothing. It just starts without any service, automotive repair shops and dealerships couldn't find what causes the engine to fail to start occasionally. I noticed that if it won't start after several attempts, i go away for a while and try again. For unknown reasons the car will start; sometime on the first attempt. This is very frustrating and could be costly for those not patient enough to try again and again.

Vehicle is equipped with a keyless start option. On two occasions within 3 days, the car would not stay running when the start button was depressed. On each occasion, after 5-6 attempts at starting the engine, each time the engine would stall when the transmission was placed in either d or r. I have had the car for only 19 months. Had all 4 tires blow out, replaced it in less then one year, then had two more replaced for thread issue. Due to the tires and alignment , had left fender incident and right fender incident. On the left incident was making a left turn on the highway when my car started pushing me to the left, the other car saw me coming in to her when , i couldn't stop it from pushing it's self more to the left. I reported this to my insurance, but they told me there was nothing i could do. So i was blamed for this incident. After that i went to the dealer and they gave me an alignment. They told me there was nothing they could do for the tires and the incident that was caused. They told me there not responsible for the tires. The right fender incident was the same thing. The driver saw that i was making a right turn with my right blinker on, car started swerving more to the right and we both hit each other. Cops came and told us both that he wouldn't file it as an accident, that we both had to report it to our insurance. Both incidents were never posted as accidents. I have noticed that no one wants to help me. Not my insurance not the dealer. I have been so frustrated with this car , it's a 2007 car . I have filed a complaint against the dealer, but there telling me i need to be realistic, how more realistic can i get. I'm scared to drive this car, but i have no choice i need to get to work. *tr

On two separate occasions in 2006 and 2007, oem continental touring tires 225/45r17 on my 2006 jaguar x-type sport sedan suffered spontaneous, catastrophic blow out failure under what should have been nominal operating conditions. {i-95, i-495, clear dry pavement, speed below 80 mph]. Since those events, remaining tires have exhibited sidewall bulging and other evidence of cord separation. Today (12/26/2008) while visiting safety website, learned of at least 50 similar spontaneous failures of same product, which is also oe tire on mercedes c300 and bmw 3 series sedans. This seems to be more than coincidence. *tr

The contact owns a 2013 Jaguar XK. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle unexpectedly misfired and then stalled with the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was able to restart; however, the vehicle then went into misfire mode. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the left-side fuel injector had experienced a major misfire and fuel leakage was found on the left side of the engine. The contact was informed that the left fuel injector needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 76,418.
The contact owns a 2010 Jaguar XK. The contact stated while driving 60 MPH, she smelled an abnormally strong gasoline odor. There were no warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to continue to drive the vehicle. The contact also stated there was gasoline was leaking underneath the passenger’s side door. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and had the vehicle towed to the dealer for the diagnostic test and repair; however, the manufacturer called back and informed the contact that they would no longer cover the repair of the vehicle because the VIN was not included in a recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
*tr
Incident #1 - jan 2013: as i was braking to a stop, the car suddenly went to what i would call "full throttle". My foot was on the brake so i firmly pressed the brake to prevent the car from crashing into my building. I tried pumping the accelerator quickly while practically standing on the brake but that made no difference in the rpms. I pressed the button to stop the engine. I re-started the car and it ran normally. Incident #2 - feb 2013: thinking incident #1, above, was a fluke, i continued driving the car without reporting the incident to my jaguar dealer. My vice president and i stopped at a mcdonald's, paid at window #1 and as we moved to window #2 to pick up the food, the car again went to full throttle'with no advance warning with the back wheels spinning. My foot was on the brake as there was a car in the lane in front of me. This time i knew to turn the engine off quickly. Again, the car ran normally after re-starting it. My vice president, jack french, will provide testimony to this incident. Incident #3 - early april 2013: the car was parked all day. I got in to leave for the day and started the engine. While the car was still in park, the engine revved to red-line 4 times in a row about 2 secs each. I took my foot off the brake pedal while it was doing this and never touched the accelerator or brake pedal during the incident. After revving four times to red line, the engine went back to normal idle. Incident #4 - april 25th: my vp and i were at a meeting with the car parked for several hours. We got in and drove about 4 blocks. As i braked to a stop at a stop sign with a car in front of me , the engine again went full-throttle with no warning; the back wheels spinning. I again pressed the start button and turned the engine off. My vice president will provide written testimony of this incident as well.
*tr
Car was driving on highway then went into limp mode and started slowing down dangerously with cars behind me blowing horns and going round. *tr
