How to read a Jaguar XJ VIN — every digit explained

Every Jaguar XJ carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this XJ.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your XJ VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Visibility:sun/moon Roof Assembly06V018000

What's wrong. On certain sedans equipped with moonroofs, a reinforcement bar was incorrectly assembled so that the bar may contact the glass in the moonroof. When closing a door or upon severe road impact, it is possible that the moonroof glass may shatter.

Risk. If the glass shatters, there is a risk of injury to the vehicle occupants.

Fix. Dealers will replace the moonroof free of charge. The recall began on march 27, 2006. Owners may contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly06V358000

What's wrong. Some passenger vehicles may have fuel tanks in which the fuel delivery module (fdm), jet pump module (jpm, and/or cluster valve (cv) seals are not properly retained in the fuel tank. This may result in illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp (mil), or a fuel odor.

Risk. If the level of fuel is above the fdm, jpm, or cv apertures, fuel may leak out of the tank. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire.

Fix. Dealers will replace the fuel tanks free of charge. The recall began on october 31, 2006. Owners may contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

Power Train:automatic Transmission:gear Position Indication (prndl)05V503000

What's wrong. Certain sedans may have been built with an incorrectly manufactured automatic transmission parking pawl guide plate.

Risk. Consequently 'park' may not engage when the lever in the vehicle is moved to 'park" and all indicators show 'park' position is achieved.

Fix. Dealers will replace the parking pawl guide plate free of charge. The recall began november 22, 2005. Owners may contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

2004 Jaguar XJ recalls 3

Air Bags:frontal04V136000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles, the passenger air bag trim components have a poor aperture edge.

Risk. Should the air bag deploy, it could be cut, causing it to not inflate properly, which increases the risk of injury to the occupant in a crash.

Fix. Dealers will inspect the passenger air bag aperture and, where necessary, remove any sharp, serrated edges. The recall began on may 14, 2004. Owners should contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

Power Train:automatic Transmission04V024000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, with the forward drive gear selected and the vehicle stationary or in a forward motion, the gearbox could potentially select reverse gear, without indication.

Risk. This failure could result in a crash.

Fix. Dealers will reprogram the transmission control module. The recall began on may 1, 2004. Owners should contact jaguar at 1-201-818-8500.

Service Brakes, Hydraulic09V144000

What's wrong. Jaguar is recalling 14,551 my 2004 xj vehicles. A potential concern has been identified with the installation of a noise vibration and harshness (nvh) pad fitted to the under tray and its interaction with the rear under floor brake pipes, rear cross member brake pipes, and their unions. A review of vehicle build conditions provides evidence that a touch condition can exist between the under floor and cross member brake pipes and the nvh pad at the rear of the under floor under tray. Where the touch condition exists, water and dirt can collect and be held in contact with the pipes and their unions, abrade the corrosion protection and reduce the corrosion life of the pipes accordingly.

Risk. Corrosion of the brake pipes can lead to a loss of mechanical integrity of the braking system. This can result in extended brake pedal travel combined with reduced braking performance in the corresponding brake circuit. The instrument cluster may display the warning message 'fluid level low', along with the brake warning lamp being illuminated. In the event of both braking circuits losing integrity at the same time, complete loss of service brakes will occur, thereby potentially causing a vehicle crash.

Fix. Dealers will remove the under tray at the rear of the vehicle and remove and discard the nvh pad fitted to the rear of the under tray. Dealers will inspect the rear under floor and rear cross member brake pipes and unions for red rust. If red rust is present on the pipes or on the union, the brake pipes and union will be replaced with new components of the same design. This service will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during may 2009. Owners may contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

The contact's husband owned a 2011 Jaguar XJ. The contact stated that while her husband was attempting to park in a parking space and the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle independently accelerated. The contact attempted to decrease the vehicle's speed by going over a bump however the vehicle continued to independently accelerate. The brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard and then lifted his foot off the brake pedal resulting in a crash with a median. It was unknown if any warning lights were illuminated since the events occurred rapidly. The front air bag partially deployed upon impact. The contact's husband was taken to the hospital by an ambulance where he was treated for both a neck sprain and a back sprain. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent tow yard and was later determined to be a total loss. Upon investigation, the contact discovered NHTSA Campaign Number: 20V557000(Air Bags) which was linked to the failure. The dealer was notified of the failure but offered no assistance. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,000.

I was driving through Kroger shopping center and I drove between two cars and my car suddenly accelerated and I had to stand on the brakes to avoid hitting a man loading groceries into his car. This was a frightening experience, which I'm afraid will happen again and I won't be so luck.I purchased the car Oct 14 2022 and supposedly have a power train warranty after 1 month and 1000 miles. My name is Craig Donahue, email:[email protected]/cell# 478-787-2446 /address:135 Wexford ct macon.ga 31210 (please help, before someone dies unnecessary!

A seris of issues plaque this model. Changed throttle body twice but car keep showing stability control not available, throttle body actuation issues with p2119,p2118 codes among several others. Car shakes and shuts down in the middle of driving. At idle, the car rev meter goes up and down and then shuts off. I have taken this car to galpin jaguar over 5 times with the same problem and each time the problem remains the same. I have since taken it to another mechanic two more times paid thousands of dollars to replace parts and still the problem exists. This has been going on for literally months. Everything i have been told, i got it fixed yet, the problem still exist. These set of issues happens at idle, when driving on freeways, and city streets. I have called aaa so often i have no more. Another issue- the car will stuck in drive gear and stop and shuts off. I have even replaced emc computer. The issue started last year march but stopped when i changed throttle body and lasted about 6 months, then started acting around september again and its at the mechanic now and they cant find the issue still.

2007 XJ

The engine stalled out when we were traveling in the passing lane at speed on an interstate highway. We had to move to the right side shoulder of the highway in front of another vehicle we had just passed and other traffic coming close behind. Definitely a scary situation for us and the other drivers. We were towed to the nearest jag dealer. The dealer had our car for two weeks. They replaced the fuel pump. The service tech's told us that they had never heard of a fuel pump going bad in an x-type. When i questioned the cost of the job, about $1450, i was told that the fuel tank had to be removed to replace the fuel pump. Since that time, we have had a battery replaced, the second for this car since we have owned it, and had to have brake pads replaced, at which time, we were told that the rear brakes had a problem in the calipers that caused the pads to sit further from the discs than they should. This brake problem causes us to use extra pedal travel when braking the car. Then, on dec 9, 2013, the rear differential fell out of the bottom of our car. We were only doing about 20 mph so there was no accident, but we had to be towed to a jag dealer about 30 miles away. My research found that when the fuel tank is removed, the differential would also be removed. This was confirmed by the service writer where my jag was towed. One of the differentials bolts broke where it appeared to have been cracked, as if it had been over torqued when installed! Transfer case burnout had internal manufacture defects. Temperature coolant sensor over heated and completely melted, causing car to overheat. Driverside door panel clips detoriated. Dimmer light knob had 2 replacements and continued to brake. Car went for servicing, car was fine before servicing, car came back from dealership with break pad and rotor problems. Dealership replaced original car break pads with faulty pads to damage rotors and have me as a customer pay for a service that is not warranted. Car also came back from dealership with an engine tick and tire grinding sound that it never had, dealership service manager said it's normal to get out of engine inspection when these sounds are new sounds that had never existed. Gas cap filler came cracked at time of purchase, car was taken to dealership for that replacement, car was brand new with this defect existing at time of purchase. Car leather seats are deteriorating, fading, peeling, chipping and cracking. Passenger side visor snapped off. Driving traction stability light comes on and off with out being switched on. Car feels like it has no shocks, car rides over small rode bump and feels like it ran into a big whole in the rode, when pavement is completely smooth, dealer says shocks are fine, but the car did not have this effect until it came out of service for the defective transfer case. *tr

While stopped in the road waiting for another car. With foot on brake, the car suddenly goes full throttle. Driver has both feet applied on the brake and the car still moves forward burning rubber, and then after a few seconds it goes back to idle. The car does this once or twice a year, the last time doing damage to a car in front of it. This is the fifth time this has happened. The car is idling normally with the right foot on the brake and it will just go full throttle all by itself. It has happened enough that we know we do not have both the brake and the gas pedal depressed. From doing online research i believe jaguar and toyota / lexus used the same system for controlling acceleration. I replaced the throttle body after the fender bender, it evidently did not help.

As my wife was exiting the freeway she pressed on the brake pedal and the vehicle accelerated causing a major crash (totaled) and serious injuries. She tried pumping the brakes and could not slow the vehicle. The vehicle behind her reported in the police report that the car on the exit ramp decelerated and suddenly accelerated. There was a red light at the bottom of the exit ramp, her foot was not on the gas pedal nor did the car mats interfere with the brake pedal. No one else was in the vehicle. The brakes were very well maintained. A search of the internet indicated 2003/2006 jaguar x-type had acceleration problems with other drivers pressing on the brake pedal. The service writer asked to see the work order for the fuel pump work, so i asked him to look it up. He was not able to find the info, because the work was done out of warranty and the jag system does not record out of warranty work! A seris of issues plaque this model. Changed throttle body twice but car keep showing stability control not available, throttle body actuation issues with p2119,p2118 codes among several others. Car shakes and shuts down in the middle of driving. At idle, the car rev meter goes up and down and then shuts off. I have since taken it to another mechanic two more times paid thousands of dollars to replace parts and still the problem exists. This has been going on for literally months. Another issue- the car will stuck in drive gear and stop and shuts off. I have even replaced emc computer. The issue started last year march but stopped when i changed throttle body and lasted about 6 months, then started acting around september again and its at the mechanic now and they cant find the issue still.

This vehicle has had numerous"unusual" issues from "stick-to-your-fingers" control buttons that were changed under warranty to a faulty alarm system that goes off randomly once activated,to exceptionally slow touch screen functions that can only be controlled via touch screen;placing driver in hazardous situations distracted by the significant delay in response' not knowing if command was received and processed.to interior upholstery:ceiling, headliner coming unglued and undone in a relatively short period of time (5 yrs) with particles coming from glue/foam polluting the interior air causing breathing problems;while the manufacturer destined the vehicle to a hot & humid destination.to the major 2 catastrophic gauge/sensor failures:the water pump breaking ,which maybe ok, but when the car temperature gauge doesn't show an increase in operating temp and stays dead center at normal operating temperature and you drive it so you can get to safety of your home since it is not "over-heating" and the steering wheel seizes on you. You ask the dealership and a vague cover-up answer ridden with hesitancy, guilt & a sense of "oh,its normal for the car!" and no remedy offered or issued (maybe i should touch the engine to make sure its not overheating?!). And now this episode:the 2nd catastrophic gauge failure:the vehicles oil is at 25% capacity (only 25% full) no oil pool under the car at any time just a few liquid drops of what seemed to be ac condensation. The car doesn't show an oil pressure drop warning or overheating or any relative warning. Mind you the vehicle does not have a "dip-stick" to check oil levels. The only warning is a service required statement that is pre-programmed at certain intervals by the manufacturer. Even if i did not change the oil exactly on time and i'm a bit late,no warning about low oil content/low oil pressure. Documentation available. *tr

While merging into the fast lane on the highway the car goes into limp mode and i nearly got rear ended by a truck . After precariously making it to the shoulder ( almost got hit by another car )the codes all cleared and car resumes as normal. I take it in to the dealer and he tells me its possibly the throttle body but he is not sure . Looking online i find many xjr's with the same issue and almost fatal consequences due to jaguar's complete negligence to recall and fix their mistakes. The part is obviously not correctly engineered - they should do something about it before someone gets killed . *tr

I was seriously injured and fortunately no one else or other vehicle was involved. I am lucky to be alive. Just prior to impact i turned the wheel to the left causing the car to hit the right front first then the car flipped over. Only the passenger side air bag deployed. Takata recall - jaguar and/or tanaka should bear the financial cost to get our unit to a jaguar dealer. This is their serious deficiency. We live at least 150 miles from a jaguar dealer and it is patently unfair for us to have the financial and logistical. Burden. It is not as if we are asking for unrealistic cost, like rental car.

The service writer asked to see the work order for the fuel pump work, so i asked him to look it up. He was not able to find the info, because the work was done out of warranty and the jag system does not record out of warranty work! That is probably why the techs never heard of a fuel pump going bad or a differential falling out of a jag car, even though there have been examples of both reported here! *tr

Car was parked in garage & gasoline spilled under the car damaging garage floor & smelling up the whole house & garage. Car was taken to dealer after we cleaned up the gas & got car out of garage. Dealer advised us that they checked with factory & there was a problem with gas tank and that they would have to order tank from a new manufacturer as the one on the auto had a problem. Still waiting 2 weeks later for car and dealer still cannot assure us that the new gas tank is from a different manufacturer. Jaguar knows that there are a lot of these tanks out there & they have not recalled them, they are waiting for something to happen so that the customer makes a complaint. This smacks of the way that ford company (which now owns jaguar) handled the pinto gas tank problem in the 60's. Someone is going to get hurt or killed. We feel that we could have lost our house due to the extreme gas spill in our garage or worse we could have been killed if it had exploded when we opened the garage door. This is a known problem and our dealer says they sold 60 of these cars this year and we are just 1 of the 2 problems they have had reported to them. I asked them if they were going to notify the owners of these 60 vehicles and they said they did not have a technical service bulletin on this

On may 5, 2006, when my new 2006 jaguar xj8 was in the garage of my residence, with mileage of 1,634, the automobile experienced a massive fuel leak literally flooding the floor of the garage. The car was taken into the dealership where the service department replaced a flange seal, performed an overnight test drive, and stated that the vehicle "operates as designed". Thereafter, on june 4, 2006, with mileage of 2,581, another massive fuel leak occurred and again the automobile was returned to the dealership for service. At this time the flange seal was again found to be leaking and the gas tank was found to be warped. On this occasion the flange was again replaced and the fuel tank was "renewed". When i first contacted jaguar toll-free roadside assistance number and advised them of the problem they stated that the situation was too dangerous for them to handle, and that instead i should contact my local fire department to come to remove and clean from the area any and all signs of gasoline. Learning that this would take hours, i opted not to do so although i now recognize that even by starting the vehicle, immersed as it was in gasoline, a destructive explosion (to life and property) could readily have occurred. *nm

I have had the car for only 19 months. Had all 4 tires blow out, replaced it in less then one year, then had two more replaced for thread issue. Due to the tires and alignment , had left fender incident and right fender incident. On the left incident was making a left turn on the highway when my car started pushing me to the left, the other car saw me coming in to her when , i couldn't stop it from pushing it's self more to the left. I reported this to my insurance, but they told me there was nothing i could do. So i was blamed for this incident. After that i went to the dealer and they gave me an alignment. They told me there was nothing they could do for the tires and the incident that was caused. They told me there not responsible for the tires. The right fender incident was the same thing. The driver saw that i was making a right turn with my right blinker on, car started swerving more to the right and we both hit each other. Cops came and told us both that he wouldn't file it as an accident, that we both had to report it to our insurance. Both incidents were never posted as accidents. I have noticed that no one wants to help me. Not my insurance not the dealer. I have been so frustrated with this car , it's a 2007 car . I have filed a complaint against the dealer, but there telling me i need to be realistic, how more realistic can i get. I'm scared to drive this car, but i have no choice i need to get to work. *tr

I drive a 2005 jaguar xjr that has defective tires, pilot sport extra load. Michelin issued a recall in february 2006 at which time the tires were replaced. Subsequently, michelin notified the nhtsa that it was recalling these tires for a different problem. The tires are subject o a noticeable blister on the sidewall of the tire. My car currently has 3 tires that exhibited this very problem. I was afraid to drive my car for fear the tires would pop. On july 18 my greatest fear was realized and the tire did pop while i was driving on the washington, dc beltway. I arrived home safely and contacted michelin customer support to explain that i saw there was a recall on the consumer affairs website regarding the tires on my jaguar. The individual directed me to national tire and battery (ntb) to have the tires replaced. When the manager at nbt contacted michelin for authorization, he initially denied my claim. While i was at nbt the 2nd of 3 afflicted tires when flat. Michelin should be held responsible for cost associated with replacing these defective tires. I am responsible for 40% of the cost, which i deem very unfair. I hope someone will look into this very serious michelin pilot sport extra load tire issue. They are putting many of us in harm's way. There was another recall by michelin for the pilot sport extra load tires. *jb

These low profile tires appear suspectible to minor impact damage from road potholes. We cannot locate an identical replacement tire from area dealers.
