How to read a Jaguar F-PACE VIN — every digit explained

Every Jaguar F-PACE carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this F-PACE.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your F-PACE VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

2018 F-PACE

I am writing to formally express my frustration and disappointment regarding the complete lack of support I have received from Jaguar Land Rover North America following a devastating incident involving my 2018 Jaguar F-PACE (VIN: [XXX]). In January 2024, while driving my vehicle, it suddenly caught fire. This fire was caused by an issue that was the subject of a recall. My vehicle was scheduled to be serviced for this very recall just days later, but it did not make it to the appointment because it was completely destroyed. The fire department responded to the scene, conducted an investigation, and filed an official report, which I am prepared to provide for your review. After the incident, I reached out to Jaguar Land Rover North America, expecting assistance in addressing a fire that was clearly caused by a known defect. Instead, I was met with outright dismissiveness and disrespect. Executive Judianne Di Leo, in particular, showed a complete lack of concern, scolding me for copying other JLR executives on emails, refusing to help, and failing to direct me to anyone who could. During multiple phone conversations, I explained the severity of the situation, including the fact that I have developed asthma, breathing issues, and severe anxiety attacks as a result of the explosion. She dismissed my concerns and even laughed at me during one call before telling me to "get a lawyer." INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

My 2019 Jaguar F Pace has been leaking fluids for over 2 years. A mechanic repaired a coolant pump, however there continues to be fluids leaking. A mechanic informed me my car is making a sound as if the power steering is about to go, which will cause engine failure. After researching, it was brought to my attention this has happened to thousands of f pace owners. I am the only owner of my car which was purchased in April 2019, with 0 miles on it. It now has roughly 92,000 miles on it. I am concerned the engine will fail due to the faulty steering rack and believe this should be a recall. In my research, I found a customer that had to threaten a lawsuit to LRJ to have this issue covered at 100%.

Our vehicle’s exhaust camshaft actuator failed without warning and costed +$3K. The vehicle was only 6 months outside its warranty and less than 60K miles. TSB for our VIN was issued for Camshaft solenoids and the technician stated it could have prevented the actuator failure. The service tech also stated he believes the Jaguar-recommended length between oil changes plays a factor in premature failed of this component. It appears to be a common issue for this engine according to the service tech and F-Pace forums.

I purchased a 2019 jaguar f pace from a dealership in new jersey on october 5th 2019. I was the 2nd owner and the car already had 19k miles on the odometer. When i purchased the car, the dealership told me that the car is well serviced and maintained and is under warranty until 2024/60k miles which is until 60k miles or 5 years. So i happily bought it as it was in a great condition. Upon asking them when the next service is due, they mentioned at 32k miles or 12 months whichever comes first. On sept 28th 2020, my car reached 32k miles so i scheduled its servicing with jaguar dealership (not the same dealership i purchased my car from). Along with service, my car was also showing check engine light alert on the dashboard. Jag dealership diagnosed the issue and found some issue with the timing belt/tensioners in the engine of the car for the reason of check engine light on. They told me this will not be covered in warranty as the car has no previous service record from when it was 1st sold to its first owner in 2018 until the service which they just did after i brought them my car. I them spoke to the dealership from whom i purchased the car asking if they have the service record/oil change record on the car when they sold me. They said they cannot provide any record history on the car. Now i have to pay $4100 from my pocket even when my car is under warranty because the car was not maintained as per jaguar guidelines, and since i was told to do the service only when my car gives an alert with 32k miles or 12 months, which is what i did. Also as per jaguar maintainence guidelines, if oil change is done, the car is good for 16k miles, but my dealership who sold me the car is saying i should have changed at every 3k miles i drive which is absolutely nonsense and i believe that is something that should've been explicitly pointed out at the time of sale. I feel cheated.

It’s impossible to do so as I’m not the original owner. Jaguar advised they couldn’t help and this is very common for the power train in these vehicles to malfunction however the manufacturer isn’t being accountable. Also when I checked the recalls on NHTSA & Jaguar websites It indicated there’s no recalls, however when I called Jaguar consumer services I was advised of 2 recalls/campaigns that relate to the engine light. While driving, the engine suddenly shut off without warning. The first incident occurred in May 2025 and stalled twice in late August 2025. Each time I lost motive power and steering/brake assist dropped, I coasted to a safe spot, turned the ignition off and back on, and the vehicle restarted. In May, a shop retrieved P0087 – fuel rail/system pressure too low. They could not reproduce the problem, added DEF, and cleared the code. The issue has recurred. No crash or injuries. The Check Engine light was on in May; no other warnings were noted at the time of the stall. The vehicle is available for inspection and is being towed to a diesel specialist for diagnosis. Suspected area is the fuel delivery system (low rail pressure). Odometer: 47,500.

Fast forward to [XXX], during which, I was driving, had no indication of any issues, then saw white/gray/smoke, pulled over, & then my car wouldn't start. The following conversation was exchanged from myself & someone named Ben, from the Sewell dealership in North Austin: [From Ben: I am not as familiar from the surface, but everything was explained in the video from the technician. The failed component is the bearing of the turbocharger which caused a major oil leak. This oil leak was the smoke you were seeing from the exhaust. We know for sure that the turbocharger will need to be replaced. The engine has a high likelihood of needing replacement as it was oil starved due to the major oil leak from the turbocharger. There is metal in the oil from inside the engine indicating internal failure from not having enough oil. From Me: which makes no sense, having just had all these things checked, back in May, with no indication of any leaks of anything other than what was shown.] ANDDD, which was supposedly fixed. I have the video footage of the technician doing a walk through in May of 2024, pointing out an oil leak, which I paid to have fix, but was later told I had no oil in my engine in July of 2024, without any warning. The car has not been drivable since, because I was quoted over 50,000 for the Turbo & Engine Replacement. I had 3 surgeries since December [XXX], which is why it's taken forever for me to do anything. However, I am STILL making payments on this vehicle. The center console gear shift has a lever to disengage the current gear to shift into another gear. However, if the lever isn’t fully pressed, the gear shift will still move, but the car remains in the original gear. So a driver may believe the shifted from reverse to drive (or vice versa) when it hasn’t. In theory, this lever should work like a manual transmission. One cannot shift gears in a manual without engaging the clutch fully. The automatic transmission/gear shift lever should work the same. In other words, the gear shift should not move/disengage unless the lever is fully pressed. Note: the vehicle (a former loaner vehicle) was recently purchased.

I believe my vehicle has a serious safety defect related to the engine cooling system that creates a fire and safety hazard. Specifically, coolant appears to leak from the cooling-elbow near the turbocharger, following a belt failure that lead to engine overheating and elbow pipe burst leading to coolant leaking on to the turbo heatshield or exhaust components. There was serious smoking when the issue happened and i shutdown on the highway as an emergency which most likely would have lead to an engine-bay fire or complete vehicle fire.. This failure mode and fire risk concern mirrors the defect described in NHTSA Recall 23V-221 (Loose or damaged coolant elbow leading to coolant leak on turbo/heatshield, risk of fire) for different JLR vehicles but ignores the F-pace model which I believe faces similar concern. The issue occurred on 9/2/2025 at approximately 9.30 AM while driving from US23 ramp to M-14, the engine suddenly reported charging system fault (but actually the serpentine belt had failed), then in a couple of minutes the engine started overheating and i pulled over for emergency. The coolant started spraying over engine bay from two locations and suddenly observed smoke from engine bay. After getting my car towed back to a workshop, I removed a heat shield and took photos, which clearly show coolant residue near the coolant outlet / elbow hose connection above the turbo. The leak appears to originate at the junction of the coolant elbow — matching the failure mode described in the 23V-221 recall documents. I have not (yet) received any recall notice that covers my vehicle for this issue (checked via NHTSA recall search tool on safercar.gov). Because the leak is directly above the turbo / exhaust manifold heatshield, there is a significant risk of fire, especially once the engine warms up and turbo area gets hot. A fire in the engine bay can quickly spread, endangering vehicle occupants and other road users.

We had to have it towed and find transportation home. Thank goodness my husband was driving because I'm not sure how I would have handled it. The Fields Jaguar Land Rover of Jacksonville says that we must pay $20,000 to repair the entire engine and Jaguar North America won't do anything to help. On 5/18, I was reversing into a parking spot and my steering rack completely locked to the right, with no warning and while in motion, causing me to strike a parked vehicle. The car had to be towed and dealership mechanic said steering rack had an internal mechanical failure and needs replacement. After doing some research, I found forums of numerous people who have had this same issue. This is a known issue by Jaguar for this particular make model and year and they refuse to issue a recall. Thousands of cars in all 4 lanes passed through the flooded roadway at 10 MPH. The highway was backed up for miles. The water did not appear to be too deep (3 to 4 inches deep); however, water entered the steering rack and shorted out the electric steering and power steering failed, and warning came on that said “OK to drive with caution Power steering assistance reduced”, we then pulled off the road to see what had happened. My wife who was driving at the time could barely control the car as we exited the highway. Steering was difficult but I managed to make it home and parked the car. Since then, we brought it to our mechanic and he confirmed that electric power steering rack has failed due to water ingress and he could not do the repair. He provided a picture of the crack in the corroded aluminum casting. The car has not been repair so part is available for inspection at this time. After doing an internet search for similar problems we found that this is a known safety issue on F-Pace and Land Rover Valar since they share the same steering rack. There have been hundreds of these failures in US and Great Briton. There is a facebook page dedicated to this failure with over 1,300 members, all of which have reported this failure. “JLR Power Steering Alliance Group (Jaguar F-Pace & Range Rover Velar)” The car is not safe to drive, I had it towed to dealer. I was driving my car and all of a sudden my steering wheel became extremely hard to turn, and a warning appeared on my dash saying “power steering assistance reduced”. It took all my strength to get around the next turn. Luckily I was near my home and was only a few turns from my driveway. My husband looked under my car and the steering rack was cracked. For a few years there has been many repairs and complaints about the power steering in the Jaguar F Pace. I was driving home Friday in the rain when out of nowhere the power steering quit working and I almost wrecked in a turn. I looked at the fluid which is full and check to see any loose wires and see nothing. I tried to call Jaguar Customer service and they told me to reach out to the service department then call back if there is any issues. Right now I am down without a car and I don’t feel like I should be at fault and pay for a failed power steering system. In the turn the car said Power Steering Assistance Reduced. There are reports of the failed steering in thousands of their cars from the years of 2017 to 2020. Some say the box starts to designate and some say it allows water to get in and damages the electrical components. I know that the milage on my vehicle is 95,000 but highway driving doesn’t cause that to happen.

F pace incident while traveling east on i-80, just past the hirschdale exit, a sudden rocking of the car occurred on entering an upgrade curve while passing a truck at about 65 mph. It was thought to be a possible blown tire and we changed lanes trying to get to the right-hand (upgrade) truck lane. As we continued uphill in the truck lane, the rocking or shaking of the steering continued and we were afraid of losing control of the car. We then reduced speed to about 50 and put on the emergency flashers. We continued on for another mile or two and decided to stop just above the floriston exit in the truckee river canyon - possibly to call for help. But this location was very dangerous for any assistance, so we re-started the car and continued home traveling about 55 mph. At these lower speeds, there was no further rocking of the car or steering problem. There were no warning lights or other signals (at any time) in the control panel to indicate a system malfunction. We later experienced complete power steering failure, fortunately at startup. Probable electro-mechanical system failure

Windshield. The Jaguar 2017 F Pace windshield is very fragile. While driving down [XXX] on multiple occasions, a pebble has hit my window and caused a huge crack. On the most recent occurrence the pebble was still in my window shield after returning home. I was traveling around 70 to 75 mph when the pebble hit my windshield. I am now on my 5th window shield since purchasing the vehicle in Dec 2019. When purchased, the vehicle had 31K miles and due to the shut down (2020)and work from home, the vehicles was barely driven. Jaguar Land Rover DFW 972.295.9783 has records of all my service calls regarding windshield replacement. The cracks have been both on the driver and passenger side. These windshields on average are $350 and up. Yes the problem has been confirmed by dealer.(Jaguar Land Rover DFW Hwy 114 Dallas TX). No Yes by the dealer (Jaguar Land Rover DFW Hwy 114 Dallas TX.) No No there were not warning lights before hand. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

This car had about 27, 950 miles on it! While driving the low coolant light came on. Stopped at once and checked the coolant level. I was only slightly low. Added more coolant and light went out, this was about one week ago, 3/3/2024. The next day after two miles, low coolant light. Again added more coolant. The next day after a few miles, the car smelled of oil or something unusual, a burning smell, as my wife was driving it, no warning lights this time, this happened while stopped at a stop light. Suddenly the entire front of the car was covered with smoke! My wife said she thought the car was on fire. She pulled into a parking lot and stopped the car. The smoke subsided and she called me. The car did not appear to be overheated and the temperature gauge was normal. Adding more coolant temporally solved the issue. I have taken the car into the Jaguar dealer and they immediately knew what the problem was, seems that ALL 2017 JAGUARS have this problem. An internet search verified the problem is so well know that Jaguar changed the defective parts and issued a service bulletin addressing this problem, BUT even though our car is well within the warranty mileage, the Jaguar dealers said that I would have to pay in excess of $3600 to get our car repaired! This is outrages! the car is not safe to drive and Jaguar is well aware of the problem, yet they refuse to correct it unless the customer pays for Jaguar's faulty design!!

The windscreen washer nozzles apply washer fluid at very base of windshield, 90%+ of the fluid goes unused, only the fluid splashed from the wiper blades passing through the stream gets to the necessary part of the windscreen. The uploaded photo was with the vehicle parked, it is even worse at highway speeds. The photo was taken after stevinson imports adjusted the nozzles

My car didn't stop when I was parking. I went over the sidewalk and I hit the tree on the driver side passenger door. The tree and sidewalk slowed me down enough where I missed the head on collision with the building in front of me. I took pictures and reported it to my insurance.

My vehicle was in motion on a city street traveling 40 miles per hour and i collided head on with another vehicle without braking. The airbags did not deploy and because of that i sustained serious injuries; sever concussion, 3 broken vertabrae, and torn ligaments and tendons in my right ankle (driving foot). If the airbags had deployed i would not have suffered the injuries i did, this is a brand new car/model and i believe there is a defect in the frontal airbag sensor component.

In my 2019 jaguar f pace, i was stopped, waiting for the car in opposite lane to pass so i could cross left into my driveway. Can a Jaguar F-PACE tow? Towing & payload

As an SUV, the Jaguar F-PACE is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.

What sets your F-PACE's tow & payload rating:

  • Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
  • Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
  • Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
  • Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.

Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
