How to read a Jaguar XF VIN — every digit explained

Every Jaguar XF carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this XF.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

Where to find your XF VIN

  • Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
  • Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
  • Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
  • Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Unexplained fire: vehicle was being driven to work. Upon pulling in to the parking lot, driver notices burning smell. Driver parks, bystander approaches driver to alert that the vehicle is on fire. Driver exits vehicle and notices a fire under the passenger side of the vehicle, approximately 1.5ft in diameter. Liquid is spilling onto the ground and catching on fire. Driver proceeds to work security desk to call fire department. Car is now enveloped in flames (~15ft). Fire spreads to vehicle in front of the jaguar. Fire causes damage to a total of 4 vehicles and the asphalt. Fire department extinguishes the fire and vehicle is towed. The jaguar was deemed a total loss. The jaguar had been driven approximately 200 miles since takata airbag replacement.

On july 20, 2017, at approximately 6:30 am, i was driving my 2011 jaguar xf in the far right lane enroute to the philadelphia international airport for a flight to attend my youngest sister's funeral. I was traumatized by the sudden massive fireball and car fire, and the possibility of missing my early morning flight. The fire started while i drove down i-95 south in philadelphia, pa. It was a motorist that pointed to me and at my vehicle that a problem had occurred. I could not determine what the problem was but i knew the performance of my vehicle was very poor. Another indicator of something being terribly wrong is that i could see blue smoke coming from the hood of my car. I exited the freeway immediately and stopped the car on enterprise avenue. After raising the hood, suddenly and without notice, i could smell and see gasoline leaking from the left side of my engine. It did not take long for the vehicle to become engulfed in fireball flames from gasoline leaks. I did nothing to cause this vehicle fire. At all times, i maintained proper speed limits and i always continued proper maintenance records on my vehicle.

While driving down i-95 south, a motorist pointed to me and at my vehicle that a problem had occurred. My 2011 xf jaguar leaked fuel. I pulled off the freeway and stopped the car. After raising the hood, i could see gasoline leaking from the engine. The vehicle totally burned up after having a fuel fire resulting from gasoline leaks. Nothing i could have done to cause this vehicle fire.

I believe jaguar should recall the fuel rail because the aluminum fuel rails corrode from the inside out from using certain ethanol fuels with low water content, which cause a pinhole that sprayed raw gasoline onto a hot engine which cause a fire. Those aluminum fuel rails were need to be replaced with stainless steel rails. My car was almost caught on fire due to a pinhole fuel leak which developed. And this occurred while stationary and moving the smell was so strong i had to drive with the windows down. And to make matters worst the fuel rail is no longer available through jaguar the part is obsolete so how can we have are car repaired if jaguar doesn't even carry the part ???

Turbocharger malfunction on vehicle at 35,000 miles

2015 XF

There was a fuel leak caused by a wire containing a hole in the front of the vehicle causing the car to smell like gasoline when sitting inside. Possibly, caused by the top of the car rubbing against the wire, due to insufficient clearance. Service advisor mentioned that this was not due to the owner/driver's fault and it makes the car unsafe to drive due to possibility of a fire. There have been a few recalls by jaguar concerning this exact issue, but jaguar says my car is not included simply because my vin does not match.

The dealer performed a diagnostic test, which located a failure code at the fuel system. The low pressure fuel pump was replaced; however, the failure was not corrected. The fuel lever provided the incorrect reading and caused the vehicle to stall. The manufcturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 13,000.

We were driving north on i-75 and exited at highway m-24. As we turned rt., the left front tire lost air pressure (lt. Front car tire was recently changed and not sure proper sealant was used when installing new tire) and the car suddenly shot to the left and we went over an embankment into a ditch for approx. 20 feet then shot up and over an expressway entrance ramp into a steel barrier. The seat belts were on both of us and the airbags deployed. We both suffered severe blunt force body trauma and had to be taken by ems to the local hospital. Recovery has been slow as whip lash and back injuries just don't seem to want to heal. On another note, my right ear was damaged by the explosion from the air bag deployment and now i have high shrill ringing 24/7 and can't sleep. I have been to hearing specialists and they say it is tenitius (spelling) but there does not seem to be any solution. Does anyone in government have any solutions? This is driving me crazy. *tr

I received a safety recall notice from the manufacturer dated february 28, 2018. It states that parts for the remedy won't be available until march 31, 2019. Due to the severity of the recall i don't believe this is a "reasonable timeframe" for a fix. What are my options or rights as a consumer that is concerned with the safety of my family?

2015 XF

I was notified via letter dated feb 28, 2018 by jaguar that my jaguar xf was included in safety recall j072 takata passenger airbags. The letter states: "due to prolonged exposure to combined high heat and humidity, the front passenger airbag module inflator housing may explode and deploy abnormally in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front passenger airbag. In such event, a front passenger airbag module inflator housing explosion could result in sharp metal fragments striking the passenger or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death." then they proceed to say, "jaguar is carrying out a recall of certain jaguar xf vehicles within the model years mentioned above. However, we currently do not have stock of the necessary components to repair your vehicle. Parts are expected to be available by march 2019." so, jaguar has told to continue to use the vehicle as we intended when we purchased it, while endangering our lives because of the issue. I can not sell the car because of a lack of interest in the vehicle and a steeply declining value. Does this qualify under the lemon law or what remedies do i have?

2014 XF

There is an open recall for the airbags inflator housing since december 2017. As per a letter received from jaguar the remedy wont be available until march 2019. That is an awfully long time- 1 yr and 4 months, to fix an issue. Even after that god knows how much time they are going to be take to actually fix this once a remedy is available. Especially when this is a serious issue which can result in death. Jaguar needs to be pushed so as to complete this asap since this is an awfully long time to be driving an unsafe car.

2014 XF

Takata recall. It is unacceptable that the parts necessary to make our car safe are not available and may not be until march 30th, 2019. That is over a year away. So for the next year we are supposed to drive our car and hope the passenger isn't killed by the air bag?

I was driving down the highway and noticed my car did not want to pull when i sped up. A few more miles down the road i noticed smoke coming from my tail pipe and the my air vents. So i pulled over, got out, and walked around to the front of the car and noticed what looked like oil on the side of my car. By this time fire started coming from under the hood. Within minutes my car was blazing and a total loss. What happened to my car? That's what i really want to know. How does a 2015 jaguar with only 36,000 catch and fire and burn up.

Vehicle had 7 recalls previously repaired including jaguar cac hose repairation. Vehicle does not currently fall under recall due to previous repair. The repair for this recall issued back in 2014 failed. Jaguar dealership unhelp ful. Car has been parked over a month and a half now. Havent had a vehicle since. Takata recall i have a 2013 jaguar xf 3.0 that began running a little rough around 30,000 miles in 2016. The check engine light came on and when i took it back to the retailer they said there was nothing wrong "possibly a loose gas cap." a few week later, towards the end of 2016 and less than 40,000 miles on the vehicle the check engine light came on again, but this time the car started to smoke and overheat, so i pulled off to the side of the highway, into a parking lot as quickly as i could. The coolant had been leaking and was dangerously low. I added coolant as per the jaguar handbook instruction and about an hour later tried to get back on the road. The car ran fine for a few miles, but once i started to accelerate into the 50-60 mph range onto the highway again a few miles down the road, the same thing happened. It started to overheat and smoke terribly. I pulled over to the shoulder as quickly as safely possible and notified jaguar roadside assistance in order to have the car towed back to the dealerships service department to be worked on. The dealership ended up replacing the engine. I insisted that i was not comfortable with this car anymore and wanted an extended bumper to bumper warranty. I was assured that they had practically "replaced everything under the hood and it would run like a brand new car." this was 8 months ago. The car has since been in the shop for 3 additional months on 10+ different occasions. The car is not safe to drive, it breaks down when starting or sometimes even when on the highway and is very dangerous. Ive had quite a few close calls. This car is dangerous and the dealership either cannot fix it or wants to keep putting band aides on it until my warranty is out then its not their problem anymore. I have lost my job due to the unreliability of this lemon vehicle and the service department in fort myers jaguar.

On May 2, 2026, ten days after purchasing the vehicle, the driver‑side seatbelt locking mechanism failed while I was driving. The vehicle was inspected the next day at CarMax Tuscaloosa. Their mechanic confirmed two separate safety defects: 1. The driver‑side seatbelt mechanism requires replacement. 2. The motor mounts are broken/loose and require replacement. The mechanic explained that debris was found inside the seatbelt mechanism, and the seatbelt needed full replacement. He also confirmed that the motor mounts were broken/loose, which can cause excessive engine movement, vibration, loss of power, or engine shifting during braking or acceleration. These conditions increase the risk of stalling or sudden shutdown, which is consistent with what occurred during my incident. The failed components are: • The driver‑side seatbelt locking mechanism • The motor mounts/engine mounting system Both components remain on the vehicle. The seatbelt failure left me unrestrained while driving. The vehicle then shifted into Park and shut off in the middle of traffic, creating a risk of being struck by other vehicles or losing control. The broken motor mounts increase the risk of engine movement, stalling, or shutdown while driving, which could lead to loss of steering control or sudden deceleration in traffic. Yes. A CarMax mechanic at the Tuscaloosa, AL location confirmed both defects: As mentioned above The vehicle was inspected by CarMax Tuscaloosa. Jaguar Birmingham declined inspection because they do not service Jaguars older than 2018. An independent Jaguar specialist declined inspection due to prior non‑payment issues with CarMax. No manufacturer, police, or insurance inspection has occurred. There were no warning lamps or messages prior to the failure. The seatbelt malfunction occurred suddenly. The engine shutdown occurred immediately after the seatbelt unlatched while braking. The vehicle remains unsafe to drive due to the unreliable seatbelt, broken motor mounts.

I purchased the 2009 jaguar xf supercharge and i had multiple stalls in this vehicle , where it would stop working and the reading board would read default system and would not start from anywhere to 2-20 minutes. I took the vehicle in of course several times and they only indicated it one time on one invoice, even though i had the recurring issue with this car. I finally took a video and gave it to the jaguar shop in walnut creek (european jaguar), and they sent the video to the manufacture. I was contacted by letter by the manufacturer saying sorry for your trouble. I also spoke to [xxx] my advisor who explained that the manufacture new the problem. Nothing seemed to fix this issue and finally on may 3, 2011, i was traveling on 580 westbound and the car exploded into flames. I escaped but with injuries to the right wrist and right knee, and left ankle, needing surgery and ptsd. I was told that my vehicle had the same type of 2010 models that were recalled, as to the gas flange /gas tank system, that could be related. I, however want to make a complaint because for the safety of others and if my children who were in the vehicle earlier that morning at 7:50 am , they would have ended in two deaths, likely three trying to rescue them. The explosion occurred at approximately 10;30 a.m. On may 3, 2011. I would like to thank you for your time and cooperation in taking the complaint. I can forward photos and anything else you would require if needed. Thank you [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

While driving my vehicle on numerous occasions, I get the alert “Stop safely, electrical fault detected”. I have to pull over and rest my vehicle before driving again. If I continue to drive, the car shifts into neutral and loses power. This is very dangerous and it will stop anywhere while driving. I took it to the dealership in VA where I lived at the time in 2023. I was told there was no issue detected. I took it to the dealership in PA after I moved in 2024 and was told it could possibly be the alternator which was replaced. The error still occurs on and off since then. This began in November 2023, 3 months after buying the vehicle. The vehicle was new and I first started getting the alert at 3,000 miles. I am now at 16,000 miles. The problem is still occurring. It has recently got worse and quickly shifts into neutral without getting any warning, then I lose compete power. I was recently driving and my car shut down in the middle of the road with no warning at all. I was stuck on [XXX] . My car was towed to Jaguar and I have no updates yet. I just saw the recall for the F-Pace E-Pace and land rovers. My car is doing the same reported in the recall. I am aware they share the same part causing this recall, the DC-DC converter. I was driving my 2015 jaguar xf on 290 east bound in worcester ma when the vehicle lost power and broke down on the side of the highway barely in break down lane. It broke down due to oil leaking on the alternator which caused it to fail and the vehicle to break down. The oil leak was caused by a faulty gasket. I complained to jaguar corporate and they will not do anything about it even though this gasket is known to go in the jaguars and land rovers. I called aaa and they had to call an officer do the location of my vehicle. This should absolutely be a recall for this gasket. This is roughly a 2 to 3 thousand repair due to half the engine has to come apart. My father and i could of gotten killed do this happening. I have owned this vehicle for a year and 3 months and i have only put 13k miles on the vehicle. I have only had to do the oil change and rear brake pads. They told me they cannot do anything because they do know who worked on it. I work in service at a bmw dealership and my manager told me he would of good willed the problem. I have had only certified technicians work on the vehicle. Jaguar/land rover should have this either be a recall or at least a bulletin the fact that it caused a perfectly good alternator to go and cause my vehicle to break down on a major highway and could of gotten us killed is unacceptable. I would really appreciate if something could be done about this and since jaguar refused to help me out at all. I look forward to hearing back. Thank you.

The brakes had to be applied harder and harder to keep it from going into the intersection, the brakes were applied so hard that the back wheels were spinning. A warning was flashed on the dash but went off immediately all that was seen was an "a", at that point the auto stop/start button was disengaged and the acceleration stopped. The vehicle was on a city street in downtown orlando.

2015 XF

I was pulling onto my street and my steering wheel locked. The car was still running and the message said battery not charging. I had never experienced this. I panicked and powered the car off in the middle of the street. I turned it back it i could move forward but the steering wheel was locked. I got the car towed. 3 times because only jaguar can fix the problem. It’s the crankshaft pulley. My issue is my car is a 2015. There was a recall on this part March 2016. It was fixed by the dealership June 2016. I purchased the car January 2017. How is it that this part has gone bad so fast. Also with this part being able to break down out of no where why isn’t some kind of dashboard warning? There was no warning sound no lights or anything. Thank god I made it off the freeway. If this was a know issue in 2016 why not create a warning other than “battery not charging”? Now I face a $2000 repair and could have had a serious accident being broke down in the middle of traffic out of no where.

On 05/02/2012. I was preparing to park my 2009 jaguar fx, came to complete stop... When it suddenly accelerated, i had the brake on, i could barely hold it back ,it jumped the curb .....i could not stop that car ,it was trying to climb a chain link fence... The only thing that stop the car was when i hit the steel pole...there was $8,200.00 worth of damage done to this car.... My son and i were not hurt ,but we could have been if it would have broke thur that fence... We would have went down a embankment and might of hit a tree, or rolled over.... My husband had it towed to jaguar deal where they said "they couldn't find a think wrong with it".. Now, i have this dangerous car and i'm scared to death to drive it again.... I will had to drive it, because i have to much money in it ..but, i will never allow anyone to ride in it ever again.... I will never put there lives in danger.... Please, if you have one these devil cars be careful and be aware of this problem.. *tr

We just bought a 2009 jaguar xf two weeks ago. Yesterday when pulling into the driveway, the car's engine surged and i went thru the garage door and didn't stop until i hit the kitchen cabinets, all the while, pressing on the brake. There are skid marks from the beginning of the driveway until the car stopped. No one was hurt thank god, but could have been serious if i had been on the freeway or anywhere for that matter. We had the car towed to the dealership and as of this moment, we have not heard what the reasoning is behind this engine surge. *tr

I could have lost my life that day with that car doing this and someone else can lose their life if this happen to them if you all don't make Jaguar fixed this problem, if it already hasn't happen to someone. I reported this problem to Jaguar today and they sound like they weren't interested in what I was telling them. They said they would open and case and they will close it. Do that make sense to you to open a case and close it?
