A low average age does not automatically mean a fragile car: a brand with a young fleet on the road will always skew early. Read it next to the share reported inside three years.

Volume follows sales, so a bestseller will always top this list. The columns worth reading are age at failure and how many reports ended in a crash.

A bad generation shows up here as a block of years, not as a single spike. Recent years look quiet simply because those cars are young and still under warranty.

2008 Lamborghini GALLARDO

I drove my car through the drive-thru and it was unexpectedly very slow. I got stuck in the drive-thru for about 7 minutes while the engine was running and the AC was brown at max. I was in gear 1 and was pulling the left and right paddle shifters to set to neutral because I picked up food from the window at in-n-out burgers and suddenly the car was just automatically shut off completely. So the shut-down occurred right at that moment so I don't know it had set to neutral prior to the shut-off or not. It's in a indeterministic state. All electrical power was gone. People helped pushing my car out to of the drive-thru to park safely. I checked again and found that only the radio was working. This car has never been crashed or salvaged so there is no reason that it behaves like this. The software must be faulty. Prior to this incident, radio and music cannot be played without inserting the key. After the incident, radio and music can be played without inserting a key. This is indicative of something faulty. I verified the battery was good and fully charged, and had good contact with the chassis. I checked all the fuses and they all were good. I've been owning and driving many cars in my 28 years and never had experienced any car shut-off in the middle of the drive until this one

2023 Lamborghini HURACAN

I was Driving on the highway and my whole instrument cluster failed and went completely black. I couldn’t see my speed, gauges, or anything. Had to have the car towed to the dealer. Then the dealer is trying to claim it’s not under warranty and is charging me $8,000 to fix. This is a massive safety issue and should be a recall

On a cold start, when I press the brake and the start button on my vehicle, the vehicle does not turn on it. It takes anywhere between 7-10 tries before the vehicle wants to turn on. I have taken the vehicle to the manufacturer’s service center and have called the manufacturer multiple times and they don’t want to recognize it is an issue. I’ve showed them multiple video evidence of the issue and they don’t want to acknowledge that the vehicle has a problem

Ranking by volume says more about how many cars a brand sells than about how they hold up. Age at failure is the fairer of the two.

How we count

Every figure here comes from complaints owners filed with NHTSA — 1,100,006 of them, covering 1,982 models built between 1981 and 2026.

A complaint is an unverified report: someone wrote down what happened to their car. It is not a confirmed defect and not a recall. What makes the volume useful is the pattern — when thousands of owners of the same build describe the same failure, that is a signal no marketing brochure will give you.

Two things we do that the source does not. First, we compute the age of the car at the moment of failure from the incident date and the model year. Second, we group complaints by the first 11 characters of the VIN — the production series — so a bad plant run does not disappear into a model-wide average.
