How to read a Jaguar X-Type VIN — every digit explained

Every Jaguar X-Type carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this X-Type.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

H2017 J2018 K2019 L2020 M2021 N2022 P2023 R2024 S2025 T2026

2004 Jaguar X-Type recalls 1

Fuel System, Gasoline:storage:tank Assembly:filler Pipe And Cap04V460000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles, when replace the fuel filler cap to the vehicle's fuel tank filler neck, it is possible to over-tighten the cap inducing a poor seal. In the event of a vehicle roll-over, it is possible for fuel to leak past the fuel filler cap.

Risk. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire.

Fix. Dealers will remove the fuel cap seals and fit better quality seals onto the vehicle. The recall began on october 1, 2004. Customers may also contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

2003 Jaguar X-Type recalls 2

Parking Brake04V487000

What's wrong. On certain passenger vehicles equipped with lhd manual transmissions, the hand brake, which applies the parking brake, may not apply sufficient pressure to the brake pads to prevent the vehicle from moving if the manual transmission was left in the neutral position. The automatic adjuster within the hand brake may not work properly causing the hand brake lever to travel outside the recommended range.

Risk. If the vehicle travels outside the recommended range, the vehicle may roll away and a crash may occur.

Fix. Dealers will replace the existing automatic adjustment hand brake lever system on the affected vehicles with a manual hand brake lever system. The recall began on january 14, 2005. Owners should contact jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

Exterior Lighting:turn Signal03V011000

What's wrong. On certain passenger sedans, the power circuit which feeds the direction indicator system could fail. This could result in the driver being unaware that the external turning indicators are not operating because the internal "tell-tail" light on the driver's instrument panel continues to work normally.

Risk. The loss of rear turn signals could fail to warn a following driver that the vehicle is turning and could result in a crash.

Fix. Dealers will replace the general electric module. Owner notification began april 1, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact jaguar at 1-201-818-8500.

On january 1, 2007 i was coming to a stop in heavy traffic. I applied the brake but the car lurched forward and i accelerated into a stopped car containing a family. I occasionally experienced the problem of unitended acceleration prior to the accident but at the time of the accident, i had not put the facts together. In the spring of 2008, i was on wet pavement going downhill when i applied the brake. The car seemed to accelerate rather than decelerate and i was thrown forward and into the rear of stopped pick up truck. I was injured on both occasions. I have called on jaguar on several occasions to inquire about the problem i have described herein. Each time jaguar denied any knowledge of any such problems associated with my car. The car currently has 72,000 miles and i rarely drive it. Frankly, i'm too afraid to drive it. While traveling on the interstate vehical's cruise control was activated when a gear box failure occured (this was the message displayed by the car), therefore resulting in the car stalling while going approx 55mph. The car was then stuck in the rear by another vehical that failed to notice my vehical slowing. I also exprienced a fuel gage eroor on 2/13/04 the fuel box was replaced by the dealer. All information is stored in onboard computer.

I pulled intp a slot on a parking deck. When i tried to change the gear to park the car lunged forward crashing into a retaining wall. It was pushing against the wall so hard i was afraid i would go through the wall or over the wall. I was on the second level of the deck. When i put the car in reverse it sped backward and struck a car parked behind me. It then crashed into a concrete wall spun around and crashed the drivers door into a concrete piller it then straightened up and sped straight backward crashing into a 4 ft high wall where the engine cut off.*ak

I was stopped in front of my garage, waiting for the door to open, with my foot on the brake pedal, when all of a sudden the engine began to speed up and brake pressure failed to stop the vehicle. The vehicle struck the partially open door, then smashed in to cabinets in the rear of the garage. Damage to the vehicle and the garage was severe. There car suffered damage to the front bumper, the hood and scratched the windshield and roof. I was not injured, but badly shaken by the incident. The vehicle has about 60,000 miles. I see in your complaint reports that this has occurred several times previously to the same model and year jaguar. The car has yet to be repaired. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jaguar x-type. While driving approximately 20 mph, the vehicle accelerated without pressure being applied to the accelerator pedal. The contact attempted to depress the brake pedal, but the vehicle would not slow down. She swayed across the road and crashed into the curb to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was damaged and taken to an authorized dealer for repairs. There were no warning indicators prior to this failure. The insurance company was notified of this incident. Recently, the transmission failed at low mileage and has not yet been replaced. The vin was verified, but appears to be invalid. The failure mileage was 5,000 and current mileage was 31,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 2002 jaguar x-type. The contact stated that she always noticed white smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. During that time, she also noticed that the engine light was illuminated on the instrument panel and she smelled something burning. She took the vehicle to a local dealer and they stated that the smoke was not problematic. After a year of complaining about the smoke, the contact began experiencing failure with the gear box and noticed that the gear box fault light was illuminated. She then took the vehicle to another dealer and they replaced the transmission. She does not remember what caused the transmission to fail or the specific failures she experienced with the gear box. The failure mileage was 69,000 and current mileage was 75,000.

2007 X-Type

The engine stalled out when we were traveling in the passing lane at speed on an interstate highway. We had to move to the right side shoulder of the highway in front of another vehicle we had just passed and other traffic coming close behind. Definitely a scary situation for us and the other drivers. We were towed to the nearest jag dealer. The dealer had our car for two weeks. They replaced the fuel pump. The service tech's told us that they had never heard of a fuel pump going bad in an x-type. When i questioned the cost of the job, about $1450, i was told that the fuel tank had to be removed to replace the fuel pump. Since that time, we have had a battery replaced, the second for this car since we have owned it, and had to have brake pads replaced, at which time, we were told that the rear brakes had a problem in the calipers that caused the pads to sit further from the discs than they should. This brake problem causes us to use extra pedal travel when braking the car. Then, on dec 9, 2013, the rear differential fell out of the bottom of our car. We were only doing about 20 mph so there was no accident, but we had to be towed to a jag dealer about 30 miles away. My research found that when the fuel tank is removed, the differential would also be removed. This was confirmed by the service writer where my jag was towed. One of the differentials bolts broke where it appeared to have been cracked, as if it had been over torqued when installed! The service writer asked to see the work order for the fuel pump work, so i asked him to look it up. He was not able to find the info, because the work was done out of warranty and the jag system does not record out of warranty work! That is probably why the techs never heard of a fuel pump going bad or a differential falling out of a jag car, even though there have been examples of both reported here! *tr

I was traveling on the freeway at 55 mph, as i exited and touched the brakes the car would not slow down, the car gained speed, i pumped the brakes and the car continued to go faster, the car was out of control and crashed into a wall. Just prior to impact i turned the wheel to the left causing the car to hit the right front first then the car flipped over. Only the passenger side air bag deployed. The brakes were fairly new with 70% brake lining remaining and the brakes had been inspected one week prior to the accident. It appears to be a combination speed acceleration and brake failure. *tr

On at least 3 occasions, my vehicle had unintended acceleration and applying brakes did not stop the car. I put it in park to stop. I took it to the Foreign performance (mechanic shop) on 11-29-23 after the first time and they said they fixed it. It occurred again on 12-8-23. I again threw it into park. I called the shop on 12-11-23 and they agreed to see it on 12-12-23. I hit a car on 12-11-23 around 11:45 am coming out of my driveway. I had my car towed to mechanic. The other car did not need to be towed. On 12-20-23, Foreign Performance wrote: "Vehicle is driving normally at this time. Checked for any set faults, none stored. Tested the function of the accelerator pedal and the throttle body. Both function normally. There are no bulletin issues by the manufacturer for this problem related to this vehicle. Called the dealership to ask what they are doing to fix this problem with uncontrolled acceleration. They claim to never heard of such a problem and that they no longer work on these vehicles. The problem is well documented nationally and has existed since the vehicle was first produced. Bottom line is that the manufacturer and dealerships have washed their hands on the vehicle. The only advise to give would be to replace the accelerator pedal assembly, the throttle body and the engine control module all together and then program the engine control module to the highest level that is available. Vehicle should not be driven by the customer." Foreign Performance said they would not guarantee my vehicle would never do this again after their recommended repairs of $4027.91. It was Christmas, I was leaving on a planned vacation for two weeks and it was complicated so the vehicle is still at Foreign Performance and no work has been done so all components are available for inspection. No warning lights. Police and State Farm insurance have been involved. Needs body work as well after MVA--estimate of $1100 per state farm.

Car involved was a 2004 jaguar xj8. While traveling from st louis to tulsa on highway 44, shortly after the toll plaza and about 40 miles from tulsa, the right rear tire separated from the wheel suddenly and without any indication of prior trouble. This resulted in loss of control and flipping off the car which landed in the mud on the side of the highway. Fortunately, we had our seat belts on, and except for minor bruises , we were not injured. The car was totaled. This was a car in new condition with only 10500 miles on it. Our insurance co reimbursed us for the loss, bit did not come up with any explanation of the mishap. Jaguar and continental tires were informed but no action taken. This is the third problem with continental tires since i owned my 2002 jaguar x-type sport. The first was a flat the day i bought it. The second was numerous cracks in the inside tire tread, and the third was discovered at the dealer service dept. For a tire rotation for cords sticking through the sidewall. All 3 instances were the left rear tire. Continental blames jaguar, jaguar blames continental, and i'm still out 3 tires in only 19 months/19,000 miles of ownership !!! My wife is extra cautious about driving ever since we brought it home not to hit any road obstacles, we feel this is a safety issue and possible lemon law as well.*ak

I reported this to my insurance, but they told me there was nothing i could do. So i was blamed for this incident. After that i went to the dealer and they gave me an alignment. They told me there was nothing they could do for the tires and the incident that was caused. They told me there not responsible for the tires. The right fender incident was the same thing. The driver saw that i was making a right turn with my right blinker on, car started swerving more to the right and we both hit each other. Cops came and told us both that he wouldn't file it as an accident, that we both had to report it to our insurance. Both incidents were never posted as accidents. I have noticed that no one wants to help me. Not my insurance not the dealer. I have been so frustrated with this car , it's a 2007 car . I have filed a complaint against the dealer, but there telling me i need to be realistic, how more realistic can i get. I'm scared to drive this car, but i have no choice i need to get to work. *tr

My wife and i nearly suffered a fatal accident owing to what turned-out to be a known defect in the jaguar motor management software resident in our and likely every 2007 and later supercharged jaguar engine. Our automobile, with 2800 miles on the odometer, without warning went from accelerating into the idle mode and then remained unresponsive to throttle input placing the automobile in a deadly 't-bone,' fortunately, the driver of the lincoln suv (i can still see the grill in the passenger window and hear my wife's screams), managed to stop his vehicle just inches from the passenger door. Jaguar calls the condition that disabled the car without warning its "limp mode." the 'limp mode' was further described by the dealer and a representative of jaguar management as 'a means of protecting a drive-by-wire engine from damage.' subsequent correspondence and incredibly unproductive and ill-informed with conversations with jaguar officials in new jersey reveals that while they too know this condition exists they intend to do absolutely nothing about it unless a customer complains. Given all the above and a great deal more, i request odi, in the interests of american public safety and to enforce corporate integrity and responsibility laws; require jaguar to conduct a public, immediate recall and permanent repair of all vehicles equipped with the defective software, and further, that jaguar be required to certify in writing to every owner and perspective buyer a permanent fix to the problem has been made and that jaguar will remain accountable for ensuring such for the life of the vehicle. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I have a great deal of incredible documentation on the incident and subsequent discussions with jaguar officials. I look forward to working with odi to quickly and permanently resolve it. *tr
