How to read a Jaguar XJ6 VIN — every digit explained
Every Jaguar XJ6 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this XJ6.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your XJ6 VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

1982 Jaguar XJ6 recalls 2
Fuel System, Gasoline:delivery:fuel Pump
What's wrong. Certain vehicles may be fitted with an unauthorized fuel pump electrical inertia switch. This switch has a tin coating added to the contacts that create the potential for a high electrical resistance. This could cause overheating and possible distortion of the plastic mounting around the fixed contact. This could result in inability to start the vehicle since there is a flow of current to the fuel pump.
Fix. Dealer will inspect and, if necessary, replace the inertia switch at no cost to owner.
Fuel System, Gasoline:fuel Injection System:fuel Rail

The seat belt on the driver's side does not buckle. The dealer is aware of the problem. The problem will be corrected. *ak
Drivers seat and the rear drivers seat buckles were broken. Consumer stated that the seat belts did not fasten. Ts seat buckle assembly replaced. *tt
I have a 1993 jaguar xj6 and every seat belt mechanism except the drivers' one is broken. The driver's housing is broken, but the latch still works. One latch in the rear works, but the housing is broken. Jaguar us tells me that these items are not covered under any warranty. However, as i understand the law, all safety features are to be repaired or replaced by the manufacturer if they become defective. Please advise.
Passenger side seat belt is broken. Tt
Tl* the contact owns a 1992 jaguar xj6. The contact stated that the front driver and passenger seat belts would not retract or tighten while in use. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the tracking needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The current and the failure mileages were 100,000.
Tl* the contact owns a 1992 jaguar xj6. The driver and passenger front automatic shoulder belt retractors were inoperative. Consequently the seat belt can not be extracted from the retractor. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for inspection. The technician stated the seat belt retractor system required replacement. No repairs were made. The failure mileage was 130,000. The current mileage was 135,000. Updated 03/04/10 *bf the consumer was informed the seat belt retractors were no longer available. Also, stated the fuel feed hose was defective which caused gas to leak onto the engine block. Updated 05/20/10.*jb
Passive restraint mortor belt malfunctioned.
Head previously (8/13/01) reported to you the refusal of the dealer/mfg. To replace an inoperative seat belt buckle that is part of the passive motorized seat belt assembly . Requested $330 to repair/replace. By coincidence, the buckle on the driver's side assembly failed in exactly the same way only hours after initial report filed. While both buckles can be connected, they cannot easilyt be removed, and represent a dangerous safety hazard in the event of a crash. Exiting the vehicle would be more difficult. Believe that repair/replacement of buckles could be covered as part of lifetime warranty of vehicle restraint system. Refusal to cover as warranty item is against spirit and intent of vehicle safety regulations.
Took my vehicle to the local dealer to repair the passenger-side passive motorized seat belt assembly. Dealer repaired under warranty, but refused to replace the defective seat belt buckle that connects to the assembly. Requested $330 for repair. Since system is not fully operative with defective buckle, believe this is an attempt to circumvent the vehicle safety regulations. It violates the spirit, if not the letter, of the safety regulations. Am concerned that inoperative buckle could be a serious safety hazard in event of crash, as it would make exit from vehicle difficult. Mfg. Should replace faulty buckle as part of lifetime warranty on restraint system.
As warranty item, dealer repaired broken passenger side motorized seat belt assembly. However, dealer refused to repair under warranty the broken seat belt buckle that attached to motorized assembly. Requested $330 for repair/replacement. Believe this is attempt by mfg to circumvent spirit of not the letter of restraint system regs, as seat belt system is only as reliable as weakest component, in this case a non-functioning buckle. Like the motorized belts, the buckle should be a lifetime warranty item if the regs are to have meaning. *ak *jb ******dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*****770288.

Purchased a vehicle at auction it was running fine however i noticed at times when driving it randomly shuts down weather in the middle of the highway while driving on the streets turning corners etc. Blocking traffic and putting my life in danger and others in the car. There's no warning the car is driving fine it just shuts down were you cannot move it forward you cannot reverse it's just stuck. Researched online and it seems to be a known issue however when i contacted a jaguar dealer in scottsdale they stated there is no recall from my van number. This is a serious and dangerous issue which in time will cost someone their life it should be placed on a recall for all known vehicles with this issue and more. Driving down i 17 cars stalled i had to pull off in a unsafe area and was stuck there for literally 30 to 45 minutes unable to move the vehicle. Also driving in tempe the car stalled why turning a corner had to turn into the parking lot or a completely died stolley traffic to one lane. Again in phoenix driving the vehicle the car stalled at 118 outside with an infant in the backseat car will not start normal move had to pull into a circle k and call a lyft to get the baby out of harms way. As a result of leaving my car off of i 17 and the highway my car was broken into which the door is damaged as well as the gears someone attempting to steal the car. Jaguar should be held accountable, this is unacceptable and dangerous.
Rear end (differential) problem. When driving at about 40 miles an hour you can hear a roaring noise from the rear end (sounds like a truck instead of a luxury vehicle). This supposedly was fixed by prior service, however the problem still exist and service technician admittedly hear the same noise that again has been reported over and over since purchasing the car.*ak
Transmission (limp home mode). Coming to a stop exiting the ramp the car shuts off, and when started again the transmission light is on, and limp home mode. This was taken in for service and the technician said no codes where presented in the computer to indicate a problem therfore they reset it and said it just beacuse of a sudden stop.*ak
