How to read a Jaguar XJR VIN — every digit explained
Every Jaguar XJR carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. Tells you it's a Jaguar and the country it was built in.
- VDS (4–8) — model, body style, engine, trim & restraints. The 8th digit is the engine code.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built (e.g. R = 2024, S = 2025).
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this XJR.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your XJR VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Jaguar is a great car manufacture but i believe all 98-2000 jaguar v8's should be considered lemon's if they have not yet been retrofitted with the latest timing chain tensioner design jaguar currently uses. These cars are ticking time bomb's if they have not. According to multiple forums and various jag enthusiast web sites jaguar never put out a recall on this particular matter; rumor has it that they did not want the recalls jeopardizing jaguar's reputation but it seems to me that it has already been jeopardized by them not wanting to accept full responsibility for all these v8's failing due to malfunctioning timing chain tensioners; the very incident that occurred with my 2000 jaguar xjr with only 80k miles this is just unheard of. This is just a few of the problem's this vehicle has given me. Sometimes it goes into "restricted performance mode" at the most unsafe times such as merging on to a freeway or making a lane change. The vehicle pretty much does not allow itself to rev pass a certain rpm and if you try to accelerate will cut all power out? I have had this problem diagnosed multiple times only to get no answers. Lastly sometimes the car goes into "fail safe engine mode" and will not allow itself to start until it basically feels like it. I kid you not this car is very temperamental and starts when it wants to. Was told that it was a linear switch causing the malfunction -$700.00 and three months later the problem still persist. I contacted jaguar in regards to all this and they simply said there is nothing that can be done. The car is too old and far past its warranty. Its almost as if they're cars are that new family puppy everyone loves at first and as soon as the dog gets old so does he. They could careless about the later model cars and that's a shame considering the later models are still recognizable as a jaguar unlike these newer models they have.
Engine defect - inability of jaguar maintenance to repair: the 1999 jaguar xjr which was purchased june 2002 with 21,715 miles on it for $40,000.00. Vehicle was lemon from beginning. Engine stalled at high speeds, showed itself twice as early as january 2003, only to continue showing itself 3 more times in 2003, 2 more times in 2004, 1 more time in 2005, and one more time in 2006,. Then, again on june 13, 2007, a total of 10 times. Example of serious engine stalling defect. On may 5, 2003, my wife was driving to work in the jaguar. She was on the dulles toll road traveling at about 60 mph when the engine died. The car finally came to a stop in the middle lane of the toll road. Cars were ?whizzing? By at high speeds on the left and the right of our stalled vehicle. Miraculously, no car hit the stopped car, and luckily, she was able to restart the engine, which could not always be restarted when these incidents occurred, and drove it directly to the jaguar dealer. Continued serious problem: these numerous incidents that we encountered over the years are potential ?road fatalities? Just waiting to happen, and the probability that one day we will be a ?road fatality? Is increasing rapidly. I have tried a number of times to work with the jaguar dealer to solve this potential problem to no avail. Spoke with jaguar executive on may 5, 2003 in attempt to replace vehicle. I again spoke with this same executive because of continued engine stalling, attempted unsuccessfully to have unsafe vehicle replaced in a fair and reasonable manner in june 2007. I believe that it is imperative that this problem be resolved before we run out of luck and a potential ?road fatality? Becomes a reality and affects us all. No resolution has been obtained. *ak
1999 jaguar xjr, the car stalled while cruising between 60 and 70 mph 3 times in 4 months. The engine would quit. The car would not restart until i pulled over put it in park and started it. This meant a loss of power steering and the brakes possibly failing if they were used to much. The car was repaired on 2-16-04. The throttle body had developed a grove where the throttle plate contacts the bore. This was causing the problem. This stalling puts the driver in a dangerous position on the highway. On the last occasion had to pull off to the side where there was no shoulder. Fortunately the traffic was light. *jb

Exhaust gas leakage into passenger compartment of jaguar xj6 and xjr (1995-1997)sedan from cracked exhaust manifolds. These cracks are a very common fault on these vehicles. The cracks are difficult to see because of heat shields. Jaguar has no upgraded part . Relacement manifolds crack in 20,000miles.*jb
Electrical System 5 Read
I was driving in the middle lane of a 5 lane freeway at 65mph when without any warning i lost all power and the engine began to coast at 15mph. Without power steering or brakes i was fortunate enough to get to the right shoulder. I had the car towed to my dealer who told me that both the alternator and battery had failed. They reviewed the computer fault warnings to confirm that no warning was ever registered by the system. A total battery failure less than 10 minutes after a normal start is odd and no warning is inexcusable, as is the total alternator failure without system notification. *tr

This incident started in nov. Of 2003 it is still ongoing as i write. I wish the incident date included continus.even after my 60k tune up a week ago, the failure started again. Vehicle looses power on a down grade and i must pull over and start the car again.also car holds back power and then without notice stops and then bucks forward. I have almost been hit from behind because the car stops with no tail lights to notify the driver behind me. Also i have almost hit the driver infront of me because the car jumps/learchs forward after "stopping". I no longer enjoy driving this car.i am scared to death i will injure or be injured by this problem! I will not purchase anohter jag until this problem is fixed by ford. Please recall this vehicle!!!! Please read jag owners chat rooms this problem is quite extensive!*ak

Air Bags 2 Read
May 29, 2012 airbag deployed as car was being unlocked in a parking lot. Vehicle was not running, merely being unlocked with the key fob, as i attempted to enter, the airbag of the drivers side, embedded in the drivers seat, blew, striking me in the head and bagging my head against the outer edge of the door opening. It is believed that i passed out, then came to and was found leaning against the car. I could not work for a week due to headaches and the impact cracked a tooth. Peerless insurance denied my damage claim, stating wear and tear and lack of maintenance. I can furnish the claim number. The car has been maintained by a dealership and had a clean carfax when purchased in2004 with 58000 miles on it and has not had any accident. The seat had to be replaced, in excess of $1800. The car is my daily driver, my daily commute is under two miles. This vehicle is not listed in the takata recall, but when it appeared in the news, i wanted to report this.
Tl* the contact owns a 1998 jaguar xjr. The contact stated that she opened the front driver's door and the seat cushion air bag inadvertently deployed and knocked her to the ground. The contact lost several teeth. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was found that the air bag wire was chafed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 109,000.
