How to read a Jaguar XK8 VIN — every digit explained

Every Jaguar XK8 carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.

1–3 · WMI4T1
4–8 · VDSBF1FK
9 · Check5
10 · YearH
11 · PlantU
12–17 · Serial123456
  • WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
  • VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
  • Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
  • Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
  • Plant (11) — which factory assembled this XK8.
  • Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.

Model-year code (10th digit)

The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:

2001 XK8

Failure of the secondary timing chain tensioners. This results in the need for a complete rebuild of the engine. I am told by the dealer that they have seen a few of these since it is poorly designed. When you research this on the net, it appears that the problem is known to jaguar owners and occurs too frequently for it to be chance. Cost of inspection and fix prior to failure about $1200, price after failure $3,000 plus. *tr

2001 XK8

Fumes enter the cabin: shortly after i took delivery of the jaguar and numeroous times thereafter my wife and i expereinced serious health problems while riding in the car. These problems were only when the sunroof was open. The first symptom was bad headaches. Eyes begin to feel dry and there is difficulty focusing. Without warning the eyes seem to be stuck in the sockets resulting in very bad double vision. *ak sunroof was stuck in the open position. Dealer replaced the purge canister valve and states that the fumes were from seam sealant that will go away, after making repairs, consumer states that the problem did not go away, therefore requesting a cancellation of the lease and requesting that all payments made be reimbursed. *slc

2000 XK8

Vehicle stalled intermittently. There had been incidents where vehicle died in the middle of the road, and consumer lost control of steering and brakes. No injuries reported. *ak

1999 XK8

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 jaguar xk8. While driving various speeds, the vehicle stalls without warning. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the electronic stability module, electrical wiring, and spark plugs. A technician stated that the vehicle goes into a lymph mode. None of the repairs have remedied the failures. The failure mileage was 53,000 and current mileage was 59,000.

1999 XK8

Secondary timing chain tensioner failure @44k miles. *jb

1999 XK8

After starting the engine, it began to make noise and had a rough idle. The restricted performance message flashed and then the engine died. The timing chain tensioner failed and jumped mechanical timing, which seems to be a very common problem. This could have caused an accident because all power steering and brakes were lost while driving the vehicle through a busy intersection. If you read on any jaguar forum, this is a problem that is common with the jaguar 4.0 v8 from 1998 through 2000.

1999 XK8

1999 xk8 convertible with @37000 miles. I lease this vehicle and keep it impeccably maintained at the jaguar service dept. In the past year once while on the freeway the engine stopped/stalled at high speed and engine lights went on. This occurred about 3 times. I notified our jaguar service person who checked out the car at next service and did not happen again. Two weeks ago, the engine light went on because it looked like the car was overheating: fan and thermostat were replaced. On sunday, july 25, 2004 after driving 7 miles to universal studios etc. Came home and an hour later attempted to start the car and it sounded at first like it was trying to turn over and simply made loud almost flooding type sound and died. I have now learned that the timing chain within the engine completely snapped and will need to replace the engine. Since the mileage is so low and outside initial warranty we have discussed the nature of the product defect with jaguar and have now learned on line that there have been multiple prior complaints and need for complete engine replacements. Further, despite directives etc it appears jaguar is not acknowledging this problem as a product defect etc. Our car is at the hornburg jaguar dealer and we are waiting for jaguar to respond to our request that they pay to repair and or replace the engine. We are deeply concerned that this type of sudden timing chain rupture could cause a serious accident and result in serious injury and or death if car owners and or lessees are not told to have their cars checked and or recalled. Please assist us if possible.*ak

1999 XK8

My low (20,000) mileage but out-of-warranty car unexpectedly (no warning what so ever) threw its timing chain, resulting in damage to the chain and more importantly, to the engine. A damaged engine will cost more than $10,000 to replace. Based on web research, its a not-uncommon problem (with the timing chain) that other owners of this vehicle have suffered, regardless of service and maintenance, which the company refuses to acknowledge and address. The manufacturer has service advises that recognize the problem but still they refuse to take responsibility beyond standard warranty. *jb

1998 XK8

1998 jaguar xk8 has a history of stalling on the freeway at speeds of 55-60mph. This occurred twice (prior owner - 38,246 miles) - prior owner told by jaguar that automobile had been repaired by replacing throttle. Same incident occurred at later. On-line information shows that several other 1998 xk8 owners have the same issue that engine turns off without warning - the car has a design flaw. There has been recalls regarding the throttle. I do not understand why the nhtsb has not forced jaguar to repair this 1998 xk8. The model, 1998 jaguar xk8, has a design flaw and is a safety risk. *tr

1998 XK8

The vehicle, without any warning and instantaneously at speed limit in a freeway travel lane, ceased to operate. This happened on numerous occasions since first acquired with less than 4,000 miles use. Each time this caused the driver (my wife) to conduct an emergency procedure - hit the emergency flashers, shift to neutral, and restart the car while it was decelerating. The last time was on july 14, 2008. The power steering, power brakes, safety handling systems, and engine were inoperable. The vehicle was taken to an authorized jaguar dealership where the problem was acknowledged, diagnosed, and ostensibly repaired. The repair was ineffective and within a few days of the first repair the vehicle failed in the same way again. The vehicle was taken a second time to the authorized jaguar dealer where another repair was conducted. Following this repair the incident did not reoccur until july 14, 2008. That day, while at freeway speeds in a travel lane, the vehicle ceased operation with no warning once again. This time however it would not restart as stated above and the vehicle coasted to a small gore-point between two concrete toll booths while traffic avoided the vehicle to each side. The vehicle would not start from neutral, but had to be placed in park in order to restart. For the third time, the vehicle was taken to an authorized jaguar dealership where the service technical attempted the jaguar "service action". The procedure failed, the vehicle was totally disabled, and the car could not be started for two weeks. A jaguar factory field employee and a mechanic from out of the area worked on it and now report that "everything is fine". They have reinstalled the defective electronic control unit and report that they are confident that this time there will be no more trouble of this nature. I do not share their confidence. I ask that nhtsa investigate this problem and assess the safety risk of the jaguar cars "service action" procedure. *tr

1999 XK8

Transmission locks up or hard downshifts at speeds of fifteen miles or below on decellateration. Found recall campaign number 99v138000, dated june 02, 1999, however was told my vin number was not on recall list. I checked the internet and found hundreds of blogs of complaints involving the exact same problem. If this is a known failure and a recall was issued why not to some vehicles and not to all transmissions that were affected. The jaguar person i spoke to was very defensive and would not let me get a word in edgewise, kept repeating that my vin number was not associated to that particular recall. This is a transmission problem that hundreds of owners are facing and should not be associated to a particular vehicle. I understand that the xj8 has the same transmission and have the same problem associated with the transmission. *tr

1999 XK8

Tl*the contact owns a 1999 jaguar xk8. While driving 15 mph, the vehicle began making a loud grinding noise. The contact attempted to accelerate, but the vehicle would not move beyond 15 mph. The transmission warning indicator illuminated. The contact was able to drive to the dealer. The failure recurred. The dealer diagnosed the failure and confirmed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The dealer also stated that the cost to replace the transmission was $10,000. The vehicle's 80,000 mile maintenance was performed on december 12, 2006. The dealer stated that recall # 99v138000 (power train:automatic transmission) is not related to his vin, although the failure is directly related. The manufacturer also confirmed that the recall is not related. The warranty has expired. The transmission was replaced and the contact can provide receipts. The current mileage is 85,000 and failure mileage was 83,712.

1999 XK8

My transmission apon take off(under 15 mph) locks very hard and lunges, leaving me to believe that perhaps the trans gears may be cracking and not meshing the way they should.at high speeds it shifts perfectly.

Tl* the contact owns a 1998 jaguar xk8. The contact stated that when driving between 35-50 mph, there was a growling noise coming from the transmission. The contact stated that the vehicle was hesitant when accelerating and the noise does would not stop until the vehicle reached 50 mph and above. The contact stated that the failure would also occur when decelerating. The dealer inspected the vehicle and assumed that the planetary gears were failing and that the transmission should be replaced. The failure mileage was 50,600 and the current mileage was 50,700.

1998 XK8

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 jaguar xk8. The contact stated that the transmission is failing and is not shifting gears correctly. The vehicle will be towed to the dealer. The manufacturer stated that they were not aware of nhtsa campaign id number 99v138000 (power train: automatic transmission). The current and failure mileages were 65,000.

1998 XK8

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 jaguar xk8. While driving approximately 10 mph, the contact heard a loud sound underneath the vehicle. He was unable to shift into any gear. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and it was discovered that there was a lock-up in the automatic gear box. In addition, the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle currently is not operable. The authorized dealer ordered the replacement transmission. The failure and current mileages were 110,000.

2001 XK8

I was recently made aware that an extremely dangerous condition that occurred with my 2001 vehicle was something that should have been prevented. It was considered a recall item on jaguars in model years 1997- 1999 (jaguar service action number: s514, subject: throttle closed position operation, reference: 13/05/04 303-s514v1). I experienced the same conditions described in the recall notice and could have easily, without exaggeration, been killed due to this engineering defect. Specifically my jaguar xk8 would display warning lights and messages while rapidly dropping to a speed of about 1 mile an hour and would go no faster. The messages indicated the following: restricted performance, failsafe engine mode, trac not available, asc not available. After the engine was shut off the messages would clear and the vehicle worked fine. This happened, luckily for me only when i was at a stop light or traveling very slowly (example: leaving the house). While driving to the dealer for the repair, this condition occurred 5 times including, for the first time, on the highway at a high rate of speed. The throttle body was replaced by the dealer at a cost to me of nearly $2,000. I contacted jaguar''s customer service department last week to express my concerns and what i thought should happen: 1) this car should have been recalled and repaired; 2) when it wasn't and i explained the symptoms to the dealer, it should have been treated as a recall item then and i should have been advised to immediately stop driving the vehicle and to have it towed. I was told that today, march 5, 2007, that no action would be taken to inform others and that no refund would be forthcoming. I learned about this recall information from another service shop who stated that i was the third jaguar xk8 that he sent to dealer with this problem. Roadfly has notes from several people trying to solve this same problem. This is not an isolated incident. *jb

1999 XK8

Tl-the contact owns a 1999 jaguar xk8. While driving at any speed, the vehicle would shift into limp home mode and it would not accelerate faster than 5 mph. He also stated that the warning light would illuminate and the computer module would indicate that there was an anti slip defective. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the throttle body was repaired. The manufacturer had been contacted and stated that the throttle body needed to replaced again. The current and failure mileage was 75,000.

1999 XK8

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 20 mph, the engine stopped running due to a tensioner failure on the timing chain. The conditions were dry and sunny. There was no accident nor police report filed.

1998 XK8

Tl*the contact owns a 1998 jaguar xk8. The contact discovered nhtsa campaign id number 98v022000 (vehicle speed control) online and was never notified by the manufacturer. The dealer stated that they could not service the vehicle because they did not have time. He also took his vehicle to a jaguar dealer in darian, ct from 1998-2004 for service and they never performed a repair or informed him of the recall. There had been no failure to date. The current mileage was 61,000.

1998 XK8

I have a 1998 jaguar xk8 convertible. Current mileage 37,334. Twice, while driving at 60 mph, the engine just cut out. After pulling to the side of the road and waiting several minutes i was able to restart the engine. The first time this happened, i attributed to possible a bad tank of gas on march 2006. After the second time on march 2007. I feared it had another cause. Just about that time i received from jaguar a "service action" s-514 stating that there was a problem with closed throttle operation, and it sounded like my problem. I e-mailed them several times to ask about an authorized service facility to have it repaired. They referred me to customer service. A rep called to say i could only have it fixed on the mainland! That of course, would cost me few thousand dollars. I asked if it could be fixed by someone here locally at my cost. She said "we can't recommend that". Not helpful at all. My complaint, however, has more to do with how this problem is classified. This should be a "safety recall" not simply a service action. Both incidents put me and others in a very dangerous situation. Once i was fortunate enough to have no one directly behind me. The second time i caused several cars behind me to swerve off the road or skid into oncoming traffic. I was just lucky that no one was seriously injured or killed. I checked your site for complaints. This problem has been going on for years!!! Apparently, i'm not the only one forced into a dangerous situation how is it possible that this is not considered a safety recall? By being a "service action" jaguar can just ignore me. I believe they should make more of an effort to fix my car or help in finding someone who will...at their cost. Can they do this legally? *ak

Consume received recall 99v138000 for the throttle body. Consumer took the vehicle to dealer, and the vehicle was taken for a test after installation of the throttle body, and the thermostat went out. 1997 XK8

Tl* the contact owns a 1997 jaguar xk8. While driving 40 mph and slowing to make a right turn, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle after approximately five minutes. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 142,000.

*tr

We can smell gasoline in the passenger area of the car. It happens whether the windows are up or down, whether the air conditioning is on or off, whether the convertible top is up or down. Usually happens in hot weather, but then again we have only owned and driven the car during the summer. The manufacturer feels that the problem is a combination of high altitude in the denver area, high ambient temperatures, and the fuel formulation in the denver area. They say it only happens in their 4.0 liter supercharged engines. The problem is intermittent. Jaguar is in the process of buying our car back as they have not been able to correct the defect. It is happening to other customers as well. I feel that this is a safety defect and that the fuel fumes can lead to a fire in an accident or if the car is near an ignition source. These models should be recalled and a full refund given to the owners. Thanks. *ak

1999 XK8

I own a jaguar 1999 xk8- it has repeatedly gone into the "limp home mode" while on the freeway twice causing cars around me to crash while avoiding me. I have had the car into the dealer multiple times and spent thousands to fix this problem but it still recurs. I have just had a different shop work on it and have gone back 3 times with out it being fixed. I am now afraid to drive in any lane other than the right lane. In trying to find a solution i found that it has been the cause of some accidents and is not uncommon. Most of the dealers i have talked to and the online forums are aware of this problem that relates to the throttle body just shutting down. It occurs randomly. I have gone to driving with a "on board diagnostic" reader plugged in to the port so that if when it happens i can quickly clear the code and move safely out of traffic. It would not surprise me if problem this has caused a large number of accidents. Jaguar must be aware of the problem because the dealers sure are. I hope that you can get them to take corrective measures before more people are injured or killed. Thanks for you consideration. The date of my last service for this problem was 4/22/09 which is the 5th service call for this in the last year and a half. During that time i have only driven it about 6,500 miles and am afraid to sell it. *tr

1999 XK8

Sudden loss of power. This is due to the stabliity control chip located in the throttle body going bad. When the wheels break loose, a sensor sends a signal to the chip in the throttle body to slow the engine so it does not over-rev. This chip according to the dealer is malfunctioning and 'firing' on its own resulting in a sudden loss of speed. This first occurred 18 months ago and i had to replace the throttle body ($1800). It just started to happen again and the new throttle body only had 13k miles on it. I just had to replace again and they only charged me another $730. My wife drives this car and this is dangerous as someone almost rear ended her. I know that there is a dealer advisory regarding a similar problem with another jaguar model. I saved both throttle bodies so you may borrow them if you would like. Otherwise they will be some expensive book ends. We will not own another jaguar due to this recurring problem but i hope someone does not have to die before they start treating their customers right ard correct this issue.

1998 XK8

In two separate instances, my 1998 jaguar xk8 has stalled while driving at highway speeds. In both cases, i had started the engine from cold at about 50 degrees ambient temperature, driven about three miles in city traffic, and then entered the freeway. Within about 1 1/2 miles, at a speed near 60mph, the car stalled. An engine monitoring system message read: 'engine stalled" and "check engine". These messages were not present previous to the incidents, nor after i restarted the vehicle. I was able to pull off the freeway. In both cases, i turned the ignition switch to off, and was able to immediately restart the car. No further incidents occurred in the minutes/days following the events. I use premium unleaded fuel from chevron or union 66. These two incidents were separated in time by about 2 months. I am now very concerned about driving the vehicle, as these incidents exposed me to possibly dangerous situations. The local dealer has offered to 'diagnose the problem' at my cost, while also indicating that they have had some similar complaints that they are linking to high concentrations of ethanol in the fuel. Their advice is to wait a couple of weeks from now when ethanol levels will be reduced and/or switch to regular gasoline! After some research, i now find that this situation has occurred frequently among jaguar owners, and possibly others. To me, this seems to be an engine management issue that would be controlled by the car's computerized efi system. *tr

*tr

I purchased a used 1998 jaguar xk8 with 40000 miles in nov 2004. It immediately started stalling at highway speeds. I took it to a local dealer in little rock arkansas, and thay told me that they could find nothing wrong with the car but charged me $1,600.00 for service that was not necessary. Within weeks it again began dying at highway speeds and would not re-start without pulling off the road, which is at times impossible due to i-30 being under construction and having no shoulder or exits, only 6-foot concrete barriers on either side of the two lane highway. I was at the mercy of every driver behind me. This is a life threatening situation that jaguar denies having any knowlege of. I have recently found hundreds of complaints on this issue with jag owners who have had the same problem. Ford has issued a field action that admits that the throttle-body is defective, but they're not fixing the cars in the u.s., only in other countries. Please do something before someone is killed.*ak
