How to read a Mitsubishi Lancer VIN — every digit explained
Every Mitsubishi Lancer carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Lancer.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Lancer VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

I purchased a 2003 mitsubishi lancer ls, frm the mmsa co. Used parking lot, with only a 100 miles. Car seemed to run fine, and then it started to randomly revv and them stall. It wasnt that bad at first, but 06/04 it became a problem. Id stall about 8-12 x a day (avg.), id taken it to the mitsu dealers who all said: they fixed it, couldnt replicate the problem, or there was nothing wrong. While on the freeway, i started to brake and then realized that i had no power to my car- it had stalled in motion. All lights were on on dashboard and the lenght between me and the other car was inevitable. Even when i had taken it to a dealer only 4 days before who said they fixed it. I ended up totally my car and recieved many injuries, and mitsubishi didnt even help me. At the time of my crash i had just hit 10000 miles- i should not have had a problem like this with a brand new (basically) car.*ak
2009 lancer mitsubishi - brake failure & transmission failure while driving about 60 miles per hr. Ended up on the side of the road and the car caught on fire. Reported - inspected but unable to hold mitsubishi liable because they did put out notice in may or june of the recall on the brake system. *tr
On 09/15/2018 at roughly 11:30 am while operating my 2014 mitsubishi lancer evolution x with 32,xxx miles i experienced a loss of power, increased exhaust noise and the illumination of powertrain fault lights on the instrument cluster. After pulling off the roadway to inspect the issue a small engine bay fire had been found (chard paint/insulation and a still smoldering wiring harness). After ensuring that the fire was out and safe the vehicle was brought to the dealership that it had been purchased from (mangino mitsubishi of clifton park) and dropped off. The car is useless in its current state and had to be tow from the dealership to a storage facility where it has been ever since. But i refuse to report the damages to my insurance because i should not have to cover damages caused by bolts that were installed improperly at the factory. I have spoken with the technicians and service advisers at the dealership. They've informed me that a failure like this should never happen if the bolts are properly installed and that they don't see why it wouldn't be covered under warranty. It is my belief that mitsubishi is trying to avoid blemishing there reputation and is refusing to admit to a fault that caused a fire in a vehicle. I don't believe this is an appropriate way to run a business. It is unsafe and unethical and am asking for assistance to receive the benefits of the warranty that i paid for.
I bought my 2014 mitsubishi lancer in nov. 2014 at long lewis ford in florence, al, where i received all regular maintenance and service performances for it. On sept. 15, 2017, i was driving down the road in my 2014 mitsubishi lancer and experienced complete engine failure (while in motion), creating a safety hazard. Once the system failed, i could no longer accelerate and could only "coast" to try and find a safe spot to brake. When i opened the hood, the main relay had caught fire, was black, burnt up, and melted on the inside. I couldn't get my car to go in neutral or any systems to work to get it completely off the road, creating another safety hazard, and had to have it towed. A sales tech met me with a new relay that i purchased. The new relay did not get my car moving again because when the relay (that was in my car when i bought it) caught fire, it caused damage to the computer/ecm. When giving the part numbers from my relay and ecm/computer for replacements, the parts specialists and i realized that the part numbers for the computer/ecm matched only a 2015 computer/ecm, and there was not a matching part number for the relay as that exact one was unobtainable, and a different one that was compatible had to be purchased. I have recently learned that there is a recall for the 2015-2017 mitsubishi lancer relays because there is a defect in the relay which causes complete engine failure. I would appreciate an investigation being performed to see if the 2014 mitsubishi lancers should be included under this recall as i have experienced the same relay issue, safety hazard and concerns, and also due to the fact that my 2014 lancer has a 2015 system in it. I need to make certain whether the relay that was put in my 2014 lancer when built, and when replaced, was/is not defective. Please advise if i need to direct this safety concern to another appropriate administrator.
The front subframe(cross member) blew out, due to excessive corrosion. Causing the control arm to dismount as well as separation of the CV axle from the transmission, while traveling down the road losing complete steer of the vehicle. Luckily I was coming to a stop sign and not traveling on the highway. My vehicle was last inspected in April of 2023 with no warning signs of there being an issue. I've recently done some research and gathered information regarding models from 08-10 Mitsubishi lancers having the exact same issue. I contacted my dealer about the issue and they stated there are no current recalls on my year vehicle. Although they also started that the part number on my subframe is the same part number that failed on the 09-10 models. There should be a recall on 2012 Mitsubishi lancer subframe(front cross member) I hope this issue is resolved! I was fortunate to not have been injured! My vehicle has not currently been inspected after the accident because I had it towed back to my house after the accident because I was unsure what to do about the situation. The vehicle is available to be towed to be inspected if need be. A police officer did pass me and checked to make sure I was alright while I was stranded in the middle of the road while waiting for a tow truck.
Received vehicle at 10km, after 2 oil changes, at 16000km miliege dropped from 700km on a tank of gas to 300km tank of gas. At 24000km heavy transmission and engine noises occurred. Gears slipping out while accelerating causing rpms to shoot up to 6000-7000 while vehicle not moving. Timing belt and pulleys not working properly causing to much engine noise. Metal grinding and whistling sound coming from under carriage of vehicle. Rear differential and cv joint problem. Reported problem to dealership and techincians each time i go in. Their response is its just tire noise and your vehicle is running smoothly each time. Now at 68,000 km, rear differential is gone, engine barely holding up, suspension on driver side is is lower than passenger side. Wheel bearing noises present. 4x4 awc system isn't working. Vehicle is dragging and is at quarter efficiency. On time with service and oil change, keep bringing up same complaints and reported back that its just tire noise. All 4 tires changes, brakes changed and rotors. Now that things are breaking down. Dealership at bank street mitsubishi denies doing any negligence over the course of 4 years and saying our techs wouldn't have missed those problems. Vehicle taken to 6 local mechanics and all reporting same problem, taken to other mitsubishi dealerships and reported negligence on technicians and mechanics from bank street mitsubishi that these issues should have been done in the past since they are defects. Service manager doesn't want high invoice bills. While repairing parts, techs damaging others. And not reporting it. Making costumers pay for techs mistakes. Issue still on going. Manager and techs avoiding accountability for their actions.
First incident occurred on 12/6/10 when the car had 11,000 miles on it. Sometimes when pressing the gas pedal, the engine revs up but the car doesn't move. This problem has happened about 25 times since i purchased the vehicle in november 2009. The vehicle issue has been reported to mitsubishi corporate and the vehicle has been taken in to dealership service centers several times. The service centers admit to knowing what the problem is but won't fix it unless the car acts up when they test drive it. Mitsubishi finally agreed to take my car in and provide me with a rental on 1/11/13 do to a recent accident due to the car defect but no promise to fix the problem was made. The problem with this car is widely reported online... Just left a auto car wash and within about two minutes smoke rises from the center floor console. I pulled into a nearby gas station about a block away. Parked away from the pumps. Demanded a fire extinguisher from the attendant. Returned to the car as flames just started to erupt from the console . The dry chemical extinguisher made quick work of the fire. I don't think between the smell & sight of smoke and putting out the fire five minutes elapsed. I think the wiring must have shorted. The cigarette lighter never worked. The only other the device on the harness into the console is the p-r-n-d illumination panel. The fire caused the plastic console housing to melt down into the top of the transmission linkage. The tow tuck operator was able to cut the melted plastic off of the linkage & i was able to dive the car home, a few blocks away. Apparently there wasn't damage to the metal linkages to the transmission. The cars' been declared a total loss! *tr
The headlight wires get shorter?... And the lights burn out all the time due to faulty wiring... Why won't mitsubishi fix this for people???????? They're very wrong to not help people with this safety issue................ The transmission syncro gears are also worthless. The only real good thing on the entire car is the engine and transmission!! Visors disintegrated also after a few years... *tr
When driving my lancer either on city or highway, it refuses to shift. The rpms go up, but the car wont accelerate. It actually slows down as if i'm pressing on the brakes (and im not) then out of nowhere the gear will shift and the car lurches forward unexpectedly. It does this all the time. The last time it did it i ran into a car. This is a huge hazard. When i step on the brakes the car almost stops, then jumps forward about 2 feet before actually stopping. This is a horrible thing to do to a driver. The car literally has a mind of it's own and the dealership refuses to do anything about it. I've seen complaints about other owners with the same issue and all of them say that their transmission died completely thus leaving their car permanently motionless. I can't even look forward to getting this fixed...i can only look forward to.....nothing. I can't sell the car nor get a new one because i've spent so much money on this lancer and nothing fixes it. I was told that it was the brake pads, the transmission fluid, the catalytic converter, the tires, the gas pedal line, and air in the brakes... I had all of these things replace and no cheap costs and it's still not fixed. Please! Order mitsubishi to recall this defective transmission! It should be a crime to sell such a defective and deadly product. Mitsubishi should be investigated! Also, when the car's rpms are above 4000, the power steering dies and i cannot turn left or right, thus i lose all control of the vehicle. I've taken it to the henderson nv dealership and they said that there was no type of recall and everything should be fine....i've nearly crashed and probably could have lost my life countless times. Countless. Mitsubishi should be banned from making vehicles in america! *tr

I was driving down the freeway at 65 mph, when i heard a very loud sound, like a gunshot, and my sunroof shattered. There was no rock or impact to my car, it just spontaneously exploded with glass raining everywhere. When i took it to the dealership, they told me it was clear that there was no rock impact to the sunroof because of the way that the remaining glass was bowed outward. However, when they submitted the documentation to mitsubishi corporate, after 8 hours of review, they declined to cover it under warranty, stating that it must have been due to a rock impact or other collision and not because of a glass or manufacturer defect.

After about 6 weeks use, sun visors in my new 2010 mitsubishi lancer malfunction during use, drifting downward obstructing forward vision. Visors were replaced at dealer. After 4 to 6 weeks, again the new visors drift downward when in use, obstructing vision. When driving toward the sun, driver must have one hand holding the visor in position and other hand on steering wheel - dangerous to shift gears or use turn signals. At this point mitsubishi seems uninterested in fixing the problem. *tr

This is with reference to the climate control panel, the knob to turn system temperature from cold to heat, with time the knob got stiff and it was very hard to turn from cold to heat, for years i have had to play with it every time i needed to use it to switch to the temperature i desired according to the weather, especially in the rain and when going from summer to winter. Finally the knob broke off and now i am no longer able to turn it making it "impossible" to defrost the windows, especially when it rains and they get foggy from the humidity or early in the morning during the cold winter months which results in unsafe driving as it impairs my vision to the point that i need to roll down my windows while i am driving which is quite dangerous. Only the rear window defrost works because it is controlled by a different knob. I have read on several websites that this incident has happened to a great amount of other mitsubishi lancer owners, with models between 2002-2005 and for the exact knob, the one for the climate control. There are 2 other knobs to control the fan and direction of air that work perfectly and no reports on being stuck or broken on those two. It seems that the temperature control knob is the only one getting stiff and breaking off with time, so it more than likely is a factory defect with the knob or the whole part. I have always been able to stop when raining and so far i have not had any accidents on account of this but i am not sure if other consumers have had the same good luck. Is mitsubishi already taking any action to fix this problem? What can we, as customers, do to get it fixed? *tr
Climate control panel/system got stiff to turn from cold to heat and eventually the knob/stem of climate control panel broke. Now it is impossible to defrost windows which results unsafe driving. I have happened to know from internet that this incident happened to many mitsubishi lancer 2002-2005 customers . Mitsubishi is not taking any action to fix this problem for these customers. *tr
The a/c knob in the car broke off toward the end of the summer 2013. It has always been difficult to switch from air conditioner to heat. For a while pliers did the trick. When i got a quote from the dealership to change the knob i was quoted $1800. Now it is winter. It is freezing. I have no heat. I was pulled over by police because of foggy windows. I had no defroster because i can't turn on the heat. *tr

I was traveling southbound on the florida turnpike, i was on the left hand lane when i looked through the rearview mirror and noticed a vehicle behind doing about 80-90 miles per hour. I merged to the middle lane so that they could continue on. They were recklessly driving and they swerved to my lane, i proceeded to swerve to avoid getting hit and when i tried to hit the brakes they jammed on me. I lost control of the car and hit the right divider with the front of my car, the car proceeded to spin out of control and every angle of the car was hit with divider and then i ended up in the middle lane facing traffic. Only 3 out of 8 airbags deployed. The main airbag which was the steering wheel airbag and knee airbags did not deploy. The car is claimed to be a total loss by geico. *tr

The headlights on the 15 lancer are ridiculously dim! I purchased my 15 lancer in october 15 and hit two deer within two months of having it! I can barely see at night and now i hate driving at night when i used to love it! Something has got to be done about this!

I need to make certain whether the relay that was put in my 2014 lancer when built, and when replaced, was/is not defective. Please advise if i need to direct this safety concern to another appropriate administrator.
I have an 09 mitsubishi lancer es sport with the sun and sound package. The amplifier, which is under my drivers side seat, for the soundsystem started smoking and sparking. I took it to the dealership, who replaced it a month ago, and a week ago, while i was driving, it started smoking and sparking again, but stops when you power off the radio, if the power is on in the radio, it continues to smoke and spark. I believe there may be a wiring defect in my car that is causing this to happen and fear that if it continues my car may eventually catch on fire. *tr
My srs light just started coming on a few years ago before we were in an accident. When we took it to the dealer to check it, they said it was a costly repair and is only to remove the light...but that the airbags would still deploy if we were in an accident. Since then, we've been in an accident where we were rear-ended (which would not deploy the airbags) but it pushed us into the car in front of us (which should have deployed the airbags). Seeing as this light just came on way before any accidents and could not have been caused by anything we did, i believe it to be faulty from the manufacturer. When googling this issue, i found a lot of people complaining about the same thing happening. Yet, mitsubishi has never been pushed to make their seat belt pretensioner flaw into a safety recall and expects to just make money off mitubishi owners coming in to pay to have this fixed.
My son was attempting to stop at a red light when the brakes started to pulse uncontrollably, and the brake pedal when down to the floor. Also the abs light lit up. Unfortunately he could not stop in time and he hit the car in front of him. Three weeks later after the car was repaired, i went to go start the car and the car would not go into gear, the instrument panel lit up and some of my electric stop working. I had the car towed to the dealer. After two days of diagnostics they said there was a problem with a wiring harness due to the accident. I tried to explain to the dealer that the abs was the reason we had the accident in the first place and that was when the electrical problem started. There was a bill for $423 that we had to pay because the dealer insisted the problem was due to the accident. I will be in touch with mitsubishi to see if this can be rectified. Also i do hope someone will investigate this electrical problem. It was very unnerving to hit the brakes and the car would not stop. *tr

1. After driving vehicle for an hour or less (depending on atmospheric conditions) a spark/static discharge occurs between the external metal surface of the vehicle and the first occupant exiting vehicle. *ak 2. This could potentially ignite fumes when the vehicle is refueling or in presence of other flamable gases/materials. Also potential could cause spark between the gas tank door and gas station fuel nozzle. This is as much of a danger as an annoyance due to the static discharge/spark is very strong. I do not experience this in other vehicles. 3. Have not taken the vehicle to the dealership to check if this is correctable. Either way other owners of this vehicle, if this issue is widespread, should be made aware of this possible danger.
I had just left my home. I had not been driving for more than 2 minutes when my front speakers shut off. I then start to notice a burning smell. I see the interior start to fill up with smoke. I thought it was an engine fire at first until i noticed a fire in my passenger door speaker. I pulled over but was not able to extinguish the flames. I made a call to 911 to send the fire department. Thankfully the fire house was very close and was able to put the fire out before it damaged more than just the door. I have the door and subsequent damage scheduled to be repaired aug 18th 2008. I have not taken apart, replaced, or upgraded any dash, radio or electrical component of the car. I don't know what would have caused this. Additionally i am also missing the heat and a/c knob as it broke off last winter. *tr

I worked for elder mitsushitty and they refused my warranty since i didn't have enough cash in my bank account to cover the cost of a repair if the warty didn't cover it under the warranty for some reason i don't know why they wouldn't of. So i had to repossess this car due to the issues and car max purchased it and mission mitaubishi could not diag it even though carmax took it in for the transmission popping out of 4th gear. I am the only 2015 mitaubishi certified sales associate in austin texas. And the dealership neglected my concerns so i had to repo my vehicle and quit due to repairs hey where trying to force me to purchase another and roll over 20k upside down they sold a stolen evo for msrp of my used car. This evo killed me and no one knew how to simple work. Carfax has yet to sell it since mission mitaubishi could not diag something i could, or carmax. Also called fire department 6 times due to car smelled like raw fuel due to fuel leak 3 times taken to service in 3 years. Mechanic freaked out from the smell when i brought it in but was unable to locate fuel leak. I memorized the vin from how many times i took it into service.

Lower control arm on front passenger side of vehicle buckled under resulting in loss of steering control and the vehicle striking a curb at ~55 mph. Dealership refuses to fix under warranty citing there is no proof that hitting the curb did not cause the damage. I was informed by the dealership that there had been a similiar incident the previous week involving another lancer. On this vehicle the failure was on the front driver side of the vehicle. This failure also resulted in a loss of steering control as well as striking an object with the vehicle. Dt

*tr
Removed foot from accelerator to begin braking for yellow light while driving approx. 25 mph, as soon as i applied the brakes, the car surged forward as if at full throttle and did not stop accelerating until the impact from the collision. The sudden, unexpected acceleration happened two times before, each time right after i lifted my foot from the accelerator to begin braking. The accelerator had not (not) been fully depressed prior to the unexpected acceleration in any of the above incidents. Attempt to brake before collision was unsuccessful;i had recently replaced front brake pads again (after 5,000 miles) because right front brake caliper was not releasing, right pads

The contact stated that while driving down a hill at 15 mph, the brakes failed to operate as needed upon depression as the abs warning light illuminated. The contact had to pump his brakes repeatedly in an effort to stop the vehicle; he also applied the emergency brake for assistance before hitting a tree stump. The contact suffered a tweak in his right shoulder but did not seek medical attention. A police report was not needed and the airbags did not deploy due to low impact. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic where they diagnosed the vehicle with defective brake pads and rotors. The contact then spoke to roseville automall(700 automall dr, roseville, ca 95661) and the manufacturer where he was informed that his vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v077000(service brakes, air); they offered no further assistance. I was on the 4th floor of a parking garage in my town and was going up to the top level. As i am about to turn the corner, i realize i am going a bit faster than i thought. So i apply full pressure to the brakes which did not work as fast as they were supposed to. The tow truck man later told me that i was going around 20 to 30 mph at time of impact. When i hit the pillar in front of me, the airbag didn't deploy and my seatbelt did not tighten as they were supposed to. This meant that my whole body snapped forward and impacted collarbone first into the steering wheel. After this incident, my whole left side felt numb and i was left with a swollen collarbone and contusions from the impact.

I was involved in a accident and the air bag exploded. My concern is i was 47 and pretty good shape yet i had pain in my chest for over12 mo. I concerned people in less shape than me will never survice the imkpact of that airbag because i felt like i barely survived. Maybe this is the way it works i never had one hit me before but to this day i still feel a little pain.

Was not aware of this new recall in july 2020 a detached front control arm may make you lose control of the car .my 17 year old daughter lost control of her car because the right side tire started to shake and the steering wheel locked up and she was unable to control car and wrecked on 6/26/2020 her air bags on passenger side came out when she went off the road in a ditch. She was driving in clear conditions at 55 mph and the right front side started to shake. She was given a ticket for failure to maintain control of her car. And has a court date with reckless driving. I can give you the va court id for the details of this.
I accidentally rear ended the car in front of me, there was significant damage to the front end of my car and no air bag deployed, rather, a fair amount of dust filled the inside of my car.

*tr
1. After driving vehicle for an hour or less (depending on atmospheric conditions) a spark/static discharge occurs between the external metal surface of the vehicle and the first occupant exiting vehicle. *ak 2. This could potentially ignite fumes when the vehicle is refueling or in presence of other flammable gases/materials. Also potential could cause spark between the gas tank door and gas station fuel nozzle. This is as much of a danger as an annoyance due to the static discharge/spark is very strong. I do not experience this in other vehicles. 3. Dealer fails to acknowledge and correct this issue. *nm
