How to read a Mitsubishi Outlander VIN — every digit explained
Every Mitsubishi Outlander carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Outlander.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Outlander VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Service Brakes, Air:supply:check Valve
What's wrong. Mitsubishi is recalling 39,711 my 2008-2009 outlander and lacer vehicles. Incorrect material composition of the brake booster check valve may cause the check valve to stick closed when the engine is shut off. When the vehicle is re-started and put into motion, under certain driving conditions (very slow vehicle maneuvers), there may be insufficient initial braking assist.
Risk. This may temporarily increase the stopping distance of the vehicle and therefore increase the risk of a crash.
Fix. Dealers will replace the brake booster check valve free of charge. The recall is expected to begin during april 2009. Owners may contact mitsubishi at 1-800-222-0037.

Seats
What's wrong. Mitsubishi is recalling 5,400 my 2007-2008 outlander passenger vehicles originally sold in or currently registered in the states of connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia. For vehicles without an electric power seat, the floor harness connector for the power seat is placed directly on the floorboard underneath the carpeting (vehicles with power seats already have the harness elevated). Tl* the contact owns a 2016 mitsubishi outlander. On two occasions, while driving approximately 65 mph, the steering wheel and brakes locked up without warning. The service engine warning indicator illuminated. As a result, the contact crashed into a guardrail and damaged the bumper. The air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. On another occasion, while driving, the engine locked up and the brakes failed to respond. As a result, the vehicle rolled backwards into a telephone pole. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to skyland auto group (255 smokey park highway, asheville, nc 28806 (828) 667-5213), but the failure could not be replicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not offer any assistance. The approximate failure mileage was 27,000. The vin was unavailable.
July 3, at approximately 10:30 pm we came home and parked the car in the driveway which is at a slight incline. I got out of the vehicle to unload items from the back, and as i came around on the passenger side the car made a loud pop sound and the car began to roll backwards and was making an audible clicking noise. In an instant i was worried that the vehicle was going to run over one of my kids who were outside as i unloaded the vehicle so i managed to climb in and as i reached over to turn off the ignition, the car bumped over where the driveway and street meet knocking me off balance. As i fell from the car, my right leg got jammed in the passenger door, my head whacked the bottom frame of the door, and right before the car rolled to a stop, the front passenger tire started to run over my left leg as i tried to keep the leg out of the path of the wheel. I sustained multiple injuries including a head injury, concussion, sprained knee, cuts and bruises. *tr
Transmission not working properly. It said overheating and then stopped driving suddenly whil driving. Very unsafe. Also issue with parking break that just stopped working. This car seems to be a lemon. Not sure why this is happening.
Hesitation when putting thee vehicle in drive or reverse. While driving RPMs fluctuate 500-1000RPMs continuously. Studdering when accelerating from a complete stop.
Tl* the contact rented a 2019 mitsubishi outlander. While driving approximately 20 mph with the shifter in drive, the vehicle started to go backwards. The contact attempted to brake on a small incline, but the brakes did not work. The vehicle continued to roll backwards towards a truck. When the contact depressed the start button, the vehicle stopped and the brakes engaged. The contact took the vehicle back to enterprise rent-a-car and received another vehicle. The contact did not know if the vehicle was diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 6,500.
I believe they said it was the cam broke a part .I was driving on a 4 lane highway going 70 my car made a horrible noise and then my car it just shut down I was in the middle lane and thank God I was not hurt or hit by the semis going around me .then tried to order this part and cannot get it it's on backorder and they have no idea when it would be available and so they checked the motor and I now have to replace the motor because of this breaking this was definitely a safety issue with my car just shutting down while driving it.
While driving in a parking lot and slowed down because of a bump the car immediately died as soon as i passed the bump with no engine light errors. The battery was car jump and nothing happened. The battery was tested with voltage meter and same issue. When you turn on the car nothing happens, no sound, no cranks, no engine light. I had the car towed at home. This is a safety issue and very concerning. The car is 2018 outlander es and have 34k miles.
When reversing the vehicle if you switch it into drive to fast the vehicle completely stalls out, requiring you to put the vehicle in park, shut it off, restart the vehicle then go. This is completely dangerous. It is an accident waiting to happen and should not be happen on a brand new vehicle. This has been happening ever since i bought it brand new with less than 50 miles on it. This has happened to me pulling out of a parking space at a local grocery store, to backing out of my driveway to take the kids to school.
transmission went out

In 2020 I got a recall for engine support from Mitsubishi. We took it in and told me that the support was find that I didn’t need to be replace even tho the recall called for it. They ended up putting rust paint on the support. 4 weeks ago that part broke on my wife when she was driving down the road. The steering wheel was taken out of my wife’s hand while driving. She was able to get the off the road safely. But sprained her wrist. When I found the broken part on the car. I call Mitsubishi themself. When I reported these issue, I was told that someone would be coming to my house to look at the car. I signed a form for them to do that. And for the to read the computer on my car. That was 4 weeks ago. I have emailed them and called them. And no one knows what I’m talking about our replying to my email. And on top of it all we are missing work, at least one day a week because of this.
The contact owns a 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander. The contact stated while driving 20 MPH, the front driver's side A-arm separated from the vehicle and the vehicle stopped abruptly, causing the contact's body to slam against the steering wheel. The contact sustained back pains and received medical assistance. Upon towing the vehicle, the contact noticed that the entire subframe was severally corroded. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where the subframe was replaced. However, the dealer did not replace other corroded components. Additionally, the contact stated that the vehicle began to leak fluids after the repair was completed. The contact stated while driving 35-40 MPH and making a turn, the brake pedal was depressed but went to the floorboard and failed to respond. The contact engaged the electronic parking brake but it failed to respond. The contact then purposely crashed the passenger's side of the vehicle into the guard rail in order to stop the vehicle. The driver's air bag exploded, propelling burning chemicals that burned the contact's left arm. The contact did not seek medical assistance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 157,000.
I crashed my car due to the rotting away of my sub frame and control arms, mitsubishi is not taking responsibility. The car has been sitting at crown mitsubishi and they only jwant to fix the recall
My car is part of a safety recall due to corrosion of the cross members of my vehicle. Prior to the recall my vehicle failed due to the cross members failing. At the time of the failure i was going 65 mph on the interstate when the frame snapped in 2. There was a lot of damage to my vehicle due to the impact of the frame splitting and many other parts of the vehicle were affected. Now mitsubishi is expecting me to pay for some of the alternative damage caused by this accident. They are asking me to pay for damage that was done to the power steering pump and hose for a total of $1,700. I have had several discussions with the corporate office and local dealer with no success. The car was in perfectly fine working condition prior to the failure and i am just asking for the vehicle to be fixed and returned to me in the same condition it was before the failure. I have not had the car for 6 months while waiting for them to finish the repairs. I am very frustrated with them. I am hoping you can help.
Tl* the contact owned a 2005 mitsubishi outlander. While driving 20 mph, the contact lost control of the steering wheel and crashed. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 16v458000 (suspension). The failure mileage was 150,000.
1. On hot/warm days when I start my vehicle it will run then die and give me the code for Mass air sensor which I replaced but it keeps doing it; the check engine will stay on for a while then turn off until it does it again. 2. When driving and I go over a speed bump the suspension grinds or does a hard squeaking noise. 3. The USB in the center console stops working at times or when move the charging cord it disconnects for a few seconds. 4. Internal lights work when they want to, I thought the bulbs where burnt out and replaced them but they still come on when they want to not everytime a door is opened.
The contact owns a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander. The contact stated that while the front tires were being replaced, corrosion was found underneath the vehicle. In less than one year with this car, 2016 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER SPORT, is hesitating when accelerating then jerking forward into 4th gear, while driving at various speeds, the steering column vibrates makes loud sound, I’ve replaced the headlights at least 6x, water is getting in the vehicle somehow even a car wish will leave the floorboards soaking wet, the steering sways. This car had given me more issues in a year than all my cars throughout my lifetime combined and vehicle's vin number was NOT INCLUDED IN MANY SAFETY RECALLS. CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF THE CRASH.

I have had multiple issues with this SUV. The main issue I am writing this for is because the car was hit stopped at a red light by another car going over 40 mph. The car rolled back then slammed into my car again going just as fast. The airbags did not deploy and the seatbelts did not lock. The impact actually broke the seats the passenger and I were sitting in. There were extensive injuries that happened because of this. The SUV was deemed a total loss because of the extensive damage done to the car. There were no warning messages, no recalls, etc. The SUV was inspected by a mechanic and insurance company and both said that the airbags should have gone off and the seatbelts should have locked based on the amount of damage to the SUV. I also took this SUV into the Mitsubishi dealership for all services/maintenance and nothing ever came up about any issues.
Tl* the contact owned a 2016 mitsubishi outlander. While driving 35 mph, the check engine, abs, and temperature warning indicators illuminated. While depressing the brake pedal to slow the down, the vehicle failed to stop and crashed into a cement barrier. The contact sustained back and neck injuries that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a tow lot. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was destroyed. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 17v609000 (electrical system). The contact called don jackson chrysler dodge jeep ram at (770) 969-7259 (located at 3950 jonesboro rd, union city, ga 30291) and was informed that parts were not available. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000. Parts distribution disconnect.

On september 2019 around 10:45 pm, mitsubishi outlander sport 2016 was the cause of garage fire at my house. The fire started in the engine /battery area after i had tried to give a jump start a day before but the car did not start. Fire was mostly contained under the hood. Since 2016, the car was mostly garaged and sparingly driven and had very very low miles not enough to get first service if i recall correctly. The interior still smells fresh car. I had registered the car with dmv as non operative status and did not renew my insurance as i was not driving the vehicle for quite some time. Even when i drove couple of time, mitsubishi smelled like rotten eggs especially when i would start or park after a short drive. I asked the local dealer and was not told to ignore it. I have few documents from dmv, insurance and photos that i will attach. I need to be totally reimbursed for the price of the car. I do have few loan payment receipts , if needed to prove. After the fire, neither home nor auto insurance will cover the damage of the car. The burnt car is sitting in my driveway. Please help asap.
While parked and turned off(for 15 minutes), the passenger side seat(heated seat) caught fire. The fire was discovered quickly and extinguished before significant damage took place. I filed a complaint with mitsubishi who directed me to the local mitsubishi dealer for a diagnostic. The mitsubishi(kerry mitsubishi) dealer would not share the results with me but contacted mitsubishi. The "management team" at mitsubishi rejected any responsibility saying that the fire came from an external source. I had only requested that they replace the faulty equipment in spite of the fact that this situation could have been much, much worse. *tr
There is a glitch in the electrical system. I have been replacing headlights constantly since I have purchased this vehicle in 2019. Last night was the final straw as both headlights went out at the same time. When I am stationary, you can watch the headlights surge when the vehicle is running. I have also had issues with the info center resetting for no reason during these glitches. No headlights at night is DANGEROUS!!!!
While accelerating the gas gage goes up but there is resistance when pressing on gas. The vehicle does not accelerate right away and there is a drag before the vehicle gets up to speed. It takes off really slow.
The contact owns a 2019 Mitsubishi Outlander. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated. The contact stated that an unknown software needed to be updated. The contact also stated that the driver’s seat belt failed to retract. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000.
The car turned off completely and then a few seconds later turned back on.

I was driving on the highway when an active stability control service warning displayed on the dashboard. It was coupled with the check engine light and immediately caused my car to seize up making me momentarily lose control of the vehicle. As i regained control the vehicle continued to resist any acceleration while the rpms would frequently spike. I also lost anti-lock brake functionality with no dashboard warning. Through my mechanic i later found out the car was forcing itself into "limp mode" because the engine air flow sensor was giving a faulty reading. All of this put my car into conditions for a crash had i not acted quickly to avoid it. It also created a repair bill that was unnecessary as this is apparently part of a known technical service bulletin tsb-13-13-008. I find it inappropriate and irresponsible of mitsubishi to not have alerted me to the defect in the air flow sensor and filter box. It caused a needless dangerous driving condition and excess repairs.

Respectfully, we bought our brand new 2016 outlander from the dealership this may. My wife rear ended a car less than a month later on the highway. She said the car didn't stop when she hit the brakes and that the brakes don't work. The car was repaired by geico for $20k damage paid and she said she wasn't driving it anymore. She had multiple injuries from the airbags and saw the doctor. After repairs, we ended up switching cars and the outlander became my car and i noticed that it seemed very heavy like it was surging forward and resisted stopping. Two months later i changed the oil on the other car, so i asked her to take the outlander just for the day. She didn't want to drive it, but i said just be very careful. She had a second accident that day on the highway causing $10k damages for repair and the air bags never deployed this time and her head, chest and knees hit hard against the steering wheel and dashboard and her back snapped and she is seeing a chiropractor now for the pain. She is a good driver and has never hit anyone from behind and now has done so two times in two months? Again she told me the car didn't stop when she stepped on the brakes. Last week we received a factory recall notice in the mail for the accelerator. I took the car in this saturday as soon as possible to have it repaired. When i drove the car after the repair and applied the brakes now in comparison to before it stops very well and is totally different. I believe mitsubishi's defective acceleration system is the cause of my wife's injuries to her head, back and knees. This accident is not my wife's fault at all. I am sure that this defect in the accelerator system was the cause of the accidents and i am asking the nhtsa to please rectify this with mitsubishi for us to find cause to be placed on mitsubishi's faulty vehicle not us. I was approaching my car and used my keyfob to open the trunk. As it was opening, I was thankfully facing away from the trunk when the rod from the right tailgate lift support flew off, hitting me in my shoulder blade. It sounded like a gunshot. While there was no puncture, due to my thick t shirt and the rod hitting the bone of my right shoulder blade, the pain was severe. Before I realized it was the tailgate support strut, i genuinely thought I had been shot, due to the sound and the pain. Had I been facing my car, the rod would've gone through my face. Had it hit my eye, I indubitably would have lost that eye or my eyesight. There was no warning. I have never experienced anything out of the ordinary with my trunk door or the mechanisms to lift it. This easily could've severely injured me or someone else, or damaged property significantly. Upon inspection visually, the non-threaded end of the rod appears to have snapped off. The hydraulics were so strong that the 5mm thick metal snapped in half within milliseconds. I have an appointment at the Mitsubishi dealership where I got the car to get to the root cause. They confirmed over the phone that my car is too new to have tailgate lift support failure.
I purchased my vehicle 11/3/19, traded in my 2016 mitsubishi for 2019 mitsubishi outlander. 3 days later my lights went out and i took the car to victory mitsubishi dealership in the bronx and they said it was a loose fuse. They tighted the fuse and my lights came on. On 11/26/19, i was on the cross bronx high way in traffic and drove but could not stop the car. My brakes failed. I got off the highway and called the police and geico. The police did not come and i had the car towed to juniors automotive center in the bronx. My geico adjuster will inspect the car on 12/4/19. I should not be going through this. I know my car will eventually be repaired but i do not feel safe driving the car.
'takata recall' i got into a three collision accident on a city highway. When i was braking to avoid the accident it kept on moving like it ways delayed. I believe that the accident could of been preventable if my brakes was aware that my feet was on it. It's like the car was doing it's own thing. There could be more things unknown going on with the car. I just brought this car 2 months ago.
I crashed my car due to the rotting away of my sub frame and control arms, mitsubishi is not taking responsibility. The car has been sitting at crown mitsubishi and they only jwant to fix the recall

The rear liftgate on this vehicle does not stop if there is an obstruction, i.e., a hand, a head or other body part. Not only does it not stop in case of obstruction, there is no audible sound made to indicate the door is in motion. I was hit in the head hard this morning - hard enough to cause stars and get a nice golf-ball sized bump on my skull. This is dangerous and should be remedied. THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED. In the parking lot where this occurred, a man saw the entire episode unfold, yelled out to try and stop it from happening, but I didn't realize he was yelling for me. After the incident he advised me the same thing has happened to him.

On march 11 th, my outlander was unable to stop and had minimal traction in about a quarter of an inch of snow causing my vehicle to hit a tree head on. I was driving under 30 miles an hour when the accident occurred. After hitting the tree, the steering wheel began to smoke. I was able to exit the vehicle and turned around to see the airbag only partially deployed. From there, my vehicle was declared a total loss. Now, after requesting my insurance company to demand a safety inspection from the mitsubishi dealership to no avail, i've contacted mitsubishi corporate and gave them my accident report with high concern in regards to the recall #18v621. I have offered to tow my outlander to the dealership and they have responded to my concern by refusing to evaluate and inspect this vehicle. When i last spoke to my case manager at mitsubishi corporate, she let me know there is nothing they will do. I have called the nashua nh dealership to make an appointment for safety inspection of this recall and they have refused to have the service department investigate. Today, i have been told upon towing my vehicle there that they refused delivery of the outlander. I have not agreed to the settlement offered by my insurance and continue to seek means of having this vehicle inspected for the recall which i'm certain caused my accident. Corporate did state that if i subrogate than they may be able to diagnose my defective vehicle. As of today, i'm in the process of gathering documents.

On 2/2/11 the brakes failed when my daughter's 2007 mitsubishi outlander was moved one car length forward in the dive way. The outlander struck the rear of our 2002 ford windstar. There have been 3 other incidents with this vehicle failing to stop when the brakes were applied, 2 of them resulted in accidents. I checked on-line for brake problems for mitsubishi outlander and found a recall for a defective "brake booster vacuum check valve" dated 3/10/2009 for 2008 and 2009 mitsubishi outlanders. The check valve "sticks" causing insufficient braking assist resulting in increased risk of crash. I checked the part numbers at the dealer for the defective part. It is the same part used in the brake system for my daughter's 2007 mitsubishi outlander. Defective p/n 4630a055, replacement p/n 4630a187. Mitsubishi must be held accountable for this problem. How many lives has it taken?? *tr

I am reporting a safety concern involving complete airbag non-deployment in a frontal collision. On January 9, 2026 I was involved in a frontal collision while driving my Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The impact caused significant front-end damage, and the vehicle was subsequently deemed a total loss by the other driver’s insurance company. None of the airbags deployed, including the driver and passenger frontal airbags. There were no airbag warning lights or system alerts illuminated prior to the collision. A police report was filed for this incident. I was not injured; however, the other driver sustained injuries. Given the severity of the frontal impact and the resulting damage, I believe the airbags should have deployed. This raises concerns regarding a potential defect or failure in the airbag system, crash sensors, or airbag control module. I have photographs documenting the vehicle damage. I am submitting this report so the incident can be reviewed for potential vehicle safety defects that may affect other vehicles.
I was waiting in red light between sunrise blvd and us1 when a vehicle in wrong way crash my vehicle in the front. The wheel air bag deployed wrong. I saw the right part of the air bag flat while the left part was fine. It caused injures in my chin and tongue, 5 ribs, in the right part of my body, broken and sternum broken too. Causing possible cinturilla in my heart and bruises in my lunges.
I was in a head on collision on 12/13/2022, and the air bag failed to deploy. The failure of the air bag deployment cause my chest to slam into the steering wheel along with my knees on the steering column. I went to the hospital for observation and any unknown injuries. My chest hurts and knees along with consistent visions of my life flashing in my mind due to the trauma of this incident. The police, nurses, family, and friends said that I’m lucky to not have serious injuries from the failure of the air bag deployment. I have pictures, police report, and other supporting documents. My 2018 Outlander air bag deployment failure is a serious issue, and it needs to be looked into due to safety, lives, and failure from the air bag. Police report number is on drivers involved. All other vehicles involved air bags deployed, but my Outlander’s air bag failed to deploy. Dangerous to myself or other air bag failures. The manufacturer of the vehicle need’s notified with a full investigation into this matter.

2018 Mitishichi Headlights, left, then right stop working. Dealer replaced first one within 6 months. So far I have replaced one or the other 4 or 5 Times. I did complain to NHTSA . I have replaced the lowbeam headlights 7 times in the past year. I dont realize they are out until someone or the police tell me. This is a safety problem.
Head lights burned out 3 times in less than one year. Headlights have a life expectancy of more than 1 year. Not sure is static build up and shock is related, but that is ongoing too.
Complete loss of headlights while driving at night. Having to replace headlights monthly. Heater fuse keeps blowing.

The contact stated that the passenger side headlight was inoperable and upon inspection it was discovered that the inside headlight assembly casing had melted and was damaged and the light bulb could not be replaced. Repairing the failure required replacing the entire headlight assembly. The contact indicated that approximately three weeks later the same failure occurred on the driver side headlight. The cause of the failure was not determined. the local dealer was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 80,000.
This is now my second complaint to you. Again on the headlights this time they went out at the same time while driving on a two lane highway shortly after midnight.thank god i had high beans even though i'm sure the people i passed didn't appreciate it. Since owning this suv i have had the bulbs replaced 5 times on the right side and 7 times on the left.was told by autozone that they believe the seal around the light is causing the moisture to enter and carrode .not sure if this is the real problem!. The price of these replacement bulbs are not cheap.i have never had an issue like this on any of my vehicles during my lifetime.... I see i am not the only one to complain about this issue, i found many complaints by searching the net..i feel this is a huge safety issue and it needs to be corrected by mitsubishi.

Can a Mitsubishi Outlander tow? Towing & payload
As an SUV, the Mitsubishi Outlander is built to tow and haul. The exact maximum towing capacity and payload depend on the engine, drivetrain and whether it has the factory tow package.
What sets your Outlander's tow & payload rating:
- Engine — a larger or turbocharged engine tows more than the base unit.
- Drivetrain & axle — 4WD/AWD and the axle ratio shift the rating.
- Tow package — the factory towing package (hitch, wiring, transmission cooler) raises the max.
- Payload & GVWR — GVWR caps the combined load; more passengers and cargo lower how much you can tow.
Exact towing capacity, payload and GVWR are added per engine, drivetrain and trim — decode your VIN above, or check the driver's door-jamb and hitch labels. Curb weight from vehicle specifications.
How much does a Mitsubishi Outlander cost to own?
A Mitsubishi Outlander depreciates at about an average rate. A typical example keeps roughly 46% of its value after five years — losing about 54% to depreciation. Fuel, maintenance and insurance add to the total cost to own.
