How to read a Mitsubishi Mirage VIN — every digit explained
Every Mitsubishi Mirage carries a unique 17-character VIN stamped at the factory. Each position is a code — together they spell out where, when and how your car was built. Here's exactly what every digit means.
- WMI (1–3) — country & manufacturer. 4T1 = Toyota, built in the USA.
- VDS (4–8) — model line, body style, engine & restraint system.
- Check digit (9) — a math check that proves the VIN is genuine.
- Model year (10) — the year it was built. H = 2017.
- Plant (11) — which factory assembled this Mirage.
- Serial (12–17) — the unique sequential production number.
Model-year code (10th digit)
The 10th character is the model year. It cycles through letters and numbers, skipping I, O, Q, U, Z and 0 to avoid confusion:
Where to find your Mirage VIN
- Dashboard — driver's side, visible through the windshield from outside.
- Driver's door jamb — on the manufacturer sticker when you open the door.
- Paperwork — vehicle registration, title and insurance card.
- Engine bay & frame — stamped on the firewall or chassis on many models.

Air Bags
What's wrong. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain 2014-2018 Mirage vehicles. The internal acceleration sensor in the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) can misinterpret vibrations such as those from poor road conditions or a flat tire to be a sensor error thereby disabling the air bags from deploying in a crash.
Risk. Air bags that do not deploy as designed in a crash increase the risk of injury.
Fix. MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the SRS-ECU software, free of charge. The recall began on November 10, 2017. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-17-006.

What's wrong. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2017 Mirage vehicles manufactured October 28, 2015, to August 4, 2016 and equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps. The affected vehicles may have been assembled without the headlight horizontal adjustment lockout clips properly secured. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirement of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."
Risk. Without the horizontal adjustment locking clip being secured, the headlight can be adjusted to either reduce the driver's visibility or blind oncoming vehicles. Both conditions can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix. MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will secure the horizontal locking clips as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on September 3, 2016. Owners may contact MMNA customer service at 1-888-648-7820. MMNA's number for this recall is SR-16-008.

Electrical System:wiring
What's wrong. Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles manufactured July 27, 2013, to September 2, 2015. If the driver enters an affected vehicle with their feet covered water and salt, it may soak through the carpet and cause corrosion to a wiring connector located in a junction box behind a kick panel to the left of the driver's footrest.
Risk. In the event of a crash, corrosion of the connector could delay deployment of the frontal air bags, increasing the risk of injury to the driver and the front seat passenger.
Fix. MMNA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the affected connectors, replacing any found to be corroded. A waterproof sheet will be installed over the connectors to prevent future corrosion. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in February 2016. Latches/locks/linkages:doors:latch
What's wrong. Excess lubrication can cause the rubber door latch switch cover to deform, and the door latch switch to malfunction, so that the shoulder belt anchorage would remain at the a-pillar when the door was closed.
Risk. In the event of a crash, the seat occupant may not be properly restrained.
Fix. Dealers will replace the door latch switch.
Seat Belts:front:anchorage
What's wrong. The guide rail on the driver's side contains a covered cable and also an angled belt guide at the top end of the webbing. The combination of these factors can lead, over time, to the cable's movement exerting abrading force to the lower edges of the cable's chamber, sufficient to cause the cable to drop out of the chamber with the shoulder belt anchorage becoming stuck.
Risk. In the event of a crash, the seat occupant may not be properly restrained.
Fix. Dealers will install a new replacement guide rail.
Exterior Lighting
What's wrong. Certain aj motorsport combination lamps sold as replacement lamps for use on the above listed passenger vehicles. Combination lamps not equipped with amber side reflectors fail to conform with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard no. 108, lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment.
Risk. Lack of amber side reflectors in the lamps will decrease lighting visibility to other drivers and may possibly result in a vehicle crash.

Seat Belts:front:buckle Assembly
What's wrong. The front safety belt buckle release buttons can break. These red plastic release buttons are marked "press." if a button breaks, pieces can fall into the buckle assembly causing the buckle to operate improperly.
Risk. The safety belts would not provide adequate protection to an occupant in a vehicle crash.
Fix. Owners should promptly check the condition and operation of both front safety belt buckles and carefully inspect the red release button for any breaks or cracks. They should ensure that both buckles are operating properly by inserting each latch plate into its buckle, tugging on the belt to make sure the latch is securely locked, and then pressing the release button. The latch plate should pop out of the buckle when the button is pressed. If either release button shows a sign of breaking or cracking or if either buckle fails to operate properly, owners should promptly contact their authorized dealer to schedule an appointment to have the buckle replaced or repaired, free of charge. The manufacturer is developing a remedy designed to prevent failure of the buttons that are not currently broken.

My husband and i were driving home one night from a friends birthday. At approx. 1:20am i was driving north in newark pompton turnpike located in wayne, nj 07470. My husband lifted the emergency brake (the reason is unknown) and the car instantly started spinning on a straight road. Within second the brakes released and sent the front of the vehicle airborne head on into a utility pole resulting in the instant death of my husband because the passenger side airbag did not deploy and my husbands cause of death was multiple force blunt trauma to upper torso i myself was 17 weeks pregnant this accident also led to the result of death to my unborn child. I also was pinned under the dashboard and received multiple bilateral fractures and internal injuries. I was induced to a coma for 1 months before i work up now i deal with many leg problems and titanium rods, screws, and pins in both legs for rest of my life. *tr
Driver lost control after the emergency brake was enabled, car freewheeled and crashed head on into utility pole. None of the frontal air bags deployed. The contact and a passenger were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The contact had bruises on the chest and other areas of the body. The passenger sustained a head conclusion and bruises on the legs. The driver on the third vehicle died. The vehicle was towed by the police impound lot pending investigation. A police report number 2017-7-392-1517 was filed. The mitsubishi nimay dealer in caguas, puerto rico was made aware of the failure and they advised the contact to call manufacturer headquarters. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65.
Recalls on mitsubishi motor north america, inc. States the head lights and aor bags need to be replaced, but i never got notice from them for the recalls in the mail nor an email. I also had problems with maintenance light on dash going off when oil change was done on my car. Windshield had smear glare during rain and after rain occurred causeing me not to see far distance when driving at night.
When having to brake with any suddenness at all, i met two extremes. They either engaged so abruptly everything was thrown forward, or they failed to engage enough. Sudden- i describe this type of braking as when being cut in front of. The necessity to brake in this manner would throw my dogs and belongings into the floor. It happened frequently enough to make an impression. It seemed irregular to me. Extreme- #1: i encountered a pile-up of traffic unexpectedly and outside of the usual slowing areas for the highway. I had to slam on my brakes. The car did not slow sufficiently. The dogs were not thrown to the floor. I avoided collision by moving to another lane. A terrifying moment, but the brakes resumed normal functions under normal conditions. #2- as i drove around a mountainous bend and negotiated some traffic, i was faced with a car at a full stop at a pedestrian crosswalk a short distance ahead of me. I slammed my brakes. The car didn't slow enough. Nothing was thrown forward until the collision. As my foot was fully pressing down on them, i question if the brakes malfunctioned under extreme braking again. Normal- (2000 miles on the car)i approached a stoplight at the end of a steep road. The brakes made a grinding sound and a mechanical pop-like sound. I let off of them then reapplied slowly several times until the car stopped. The sound repeated every time i braked. It sounded as if i continued to brake, they would break. The noises dissipated after i continued. I reported it at my first oil change. He said they were fine. On review at the salvage lot, the brakes appear normal yet remarkably shiny and unused for 14,500 miles. Other: the airbags did not deploy though the car totaled. The display was often in french though english was selected. I do not know if the brakes are in any way run by the computerized part of the car so i add this detail.
Tl* the contact owned a 2018 mitsubishi mirage. While driving approximately 25 mph, the contact lost control of the vehicle and it flipped over three times. The frontal air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed. The fire department was present and a fire report was filed. The driver and a passenger were injured, taken to the hospital by ambulance, treated, and released. The contact also stated that the vehicle was taken to mountaineer automotive (615 n eisenhower drive, buckley, wv, 25801) to be repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 17v686000 (air bags) three weeks prior to the crash. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer afterwards for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 5,000.

On april 18, 2014 only 2 months after purchasing their brand new 2014 mitsubishi mirage my parents were hit head on after a person swerved into their lane. Speed was not a factor, the investigation is still under way, and we still don't know why they both died (driver with massive head trauma including a broken jaw, passenger with massive abdominal trauma.) there will be an autopsy on both vehicles, but the driver of the other vehicle walked away with a broken leg and heel. Why? I have looked long and hard at this new mitsubushi and i am wondering why their new safety system that would effectively keep them in a steel cell during an accident was compromised. *tr
2001 mitsubishi mirage involved in head-on collision with 1994 ford explorer. Both vehicles estimated to be traveling 35 miles per hour. Air bags did not deploy in 2001 mitsubishi. Vehicle is a total loss. Adjusters for both insurance companies involved commented that they were surprised that air bags did not deploy. Contacted mitsubishi because of my concern that air bags did not deploy. Asked if they could have representative inspect vehicle. Their response was that there was probably too little impact to deploy air bags. When i explained that the vehicle was a total loss they said i could do whatever i wanted at my own expense and they would send me a brochure on air bags.

I was stopped in traffic when i was rear ended by a driver doing approximately 50 mph on a 3 lane parkway, which caused me to crash into the car right in front of me. The collision was violent enough to cause bruising on my bicep and upper thighs and knocked my hearing aids onto the dash. The airbag did not deploy and the seat belt inertial reel did not activate properly as my head was above the steering wheel when it finally caught. I do not know if the seatbelt reached the end of its length, or the inertial reel finally locked, but when it did stop me, the lap belt was on my upper things, the shoulder strap was down across my arm and stomach and my head was up over the steering wheel headed for the front window. I believe this exacerbated my lower back injury by causing a severe twisting moment as opposed to being restrained properly in the seat.
Attorney is writing on behalf client who was involved in a serious personal injury precipitated by a defective takata seat belt in a 2000 mitsubishi mirage he rented from enterprise rent-a-car. I was traveling on a two lane road in my 2014 mitsubishi mirage, it had been raining and the roads were still damp. I was driving below the speed limit because i wanted to attempt to get the highest mpg possible on the mpg calculator on the dash. Suddenly, the truck in front of me slammed on breaks. It was at a distance that i should have not been worried about collision, but as soon as i hit the breaks in response, they failed. Everything happened so fast i don't know if my brakes locked up causing me to slide, or if they just did not activate at all. There were no skid marks on the road. I ended up going into oncoming traffic and hitting another vehicle head on. The impact flipped my mirage multiple times and i landed sideways in a ditch. All airbags deployed. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were injured and went to the hospital. I broke a rib and received some bad bruising from airbag and seatbelt, but refused to go to the hospital.

We had the car aligned several times after the control arm was replaced on the right side front wheel. It was broke when car was purchased. The car stalled about 5 different times at highway speeds. I asked the repair department to check but they said there was no problem. The right window motor went out and had to be repaired. The accident that occurred on 2-13-2001 happened because the engine stalled and when the car pulled to the right my daughter went off the road and was unable to correct before hitting a tree and fence at around 60 mph the car was totalled and the air bags failed to deploy. Luckily my daughter was not severely injured. She suffered some cuts, bruising and back pain from the accident. A passenger with her at the time was shook up, but was unhurt. This could have been prevented had they fixed the car when it was taken in. I was never told that there had been recalls on cars made in japan which is where this cars parts came from and assembly took place. I have contaced customer service and they only give me the run around saying they want proof the car failed. I would think pictures of the vehicle and our statements would say something. I have photos of the car and the airbag area.*ak

Every once in awhile when stopped at a stop sign or light and you hit the gas to go the car will do multiple jumps like manual transmission car. Very uncomfortable and worried that there is something wrong.
So after my car at about 2,000 miles on it my front strut mounts gave out I had them inspected and was told that they were bad the car was practically brand new I was having a lot of noise coming from the front end and I noticed that my car took a lot longer to brake than it should. And I believe that this is a safety concern because it shouldn't be going out that soon and the increased breaking distance associated with it increases the risk of accidents. And the strut mounts should not be bad from that early on. Also another problem that my vehicle has had that I haven't gotten diagnosed yet is there is a popping sound coming from the transaxle where the axle goes into the transmission and a delay in acceleration sometimes and other times my car randomly jolts forward. And I have to explanation as to why. And the third problem that I've had from about the same mileage as my car randomly not turning on though not a safety concern unless you really need to get somewhere it still shouldn't have that problem with so little miles and it's never been in an accident. I just remembered one other thing my car rolls if the parking brake is not on which I feel like that is a safety concern it will roll about a good four or five inches and it is really sketchy and it does not have enough mileage on it to be doing this and I have never been in an accident it started doing this around the same time all these problems arose around about 2,000 miles on my car and I have to have my e-brake on just to feel comfortable to park it and I have a friend who also has a Mitsubishi and hers doesn't do that and I feel like it has something to do with the popping sound in the transmission area.

Engine caught on fire parked and not running in my driveway
2001 mitsubishi mirage appx 105,000 miles. Purchased may 2007. Vehicle's fuse box caught fire and caused extensive damage totaling the car. No prior mechanical problems before the event occurred. I purchased a new mirage from a dealer in 2001. I might have had about 53,000 miles on the car when i started having brake problems. I decided to look into it after i had my first accident, in which i ended up rear ending someone. I got new tires and had the damage repaired. About a month later, i had another accident resulting in rear ending someone. The car was making funny noises when i stopped. I took the car to a mechanic who said my brake pads were worn completely through, as a result of my calipers failing to release, which also wore my rotors our. In addition, he said the wrong size calipers were on the car (they were the original set). I was shocked. It was recommended that i do not drive the car another mile before getting new pads, rotors, and calipers. I was furious--i couldn't afford the entire job, so i had the brake pads replaced and immediately took the car to a mitsubishi dealer for a second opinion. They said my calipers were fine and my rotors just needed to be shaved. About a month later, i rear ended someone else. I took my car back to a dealer and had the brakes inspected. They said they look fine. I've been driving for 7 years with no prior accidents, then i get 3 in a row. My insurance is through the roof. I drive extra slow with plenty of space between me and the next car. I don't know when my brakes will work properly and they keep telling me they are fine. Today, i took my car into the dealer for a brake inspection--the noise and vibration is very noticeable--and guess what they said--your brakes are fine. I don't know what else to do or who can help me. *ak

*tr

Engine caught on fire parked and not running in my driveway
I was given a 1999 mitsubishi mirage by my insurance company after an accident in my 1997 mirage. When i received the car, the passenger side door was difficult to open. Over time, the door became increasingly difficult to close and it eventually became misaligned, dropping when it was opened. In july 2002, the door became unusable because it could not be opened far enough for a passenger to enter. I took it to a dealership, where i was told that the hinge had rusted shut due to underuse and that i would have to take it to a body shop. When i took it to the body shop, i was told that the dealer was not telling the truth because this was a very common problem with this model of car and that the hinges were defective. The body shop told me to contact mitsubishi directly. I called mitsubishi's customer service line and was literally told "it is not under warranty, there is no defect and it's your problem now." i have since been able to find on your website that this is in fact a very common problem. *ak

Is there a wind standard for vehicles on highways? I know whenever there is wind on interstate no matter what strength this vehicle struggles through it. Not sure body is designed properly for highway where there is always wind. I'm having hard time keeping control of it and keeping from accident since i'm blown easily away. Also it shouldn't matter whether windows or down or not. Car should be designed to be able to handle all conditions. I know wind is something you have to deal with but this vehicle seems very tough to handle in it. I was driving 1998 ford taurus and hit wind but didn't have this much difficulty driving in wind. I was wondering if there was a wind safety standard on vehicles and if not should there be one. I know i put todays date on when it happened but have experienced this wind danger on many dates since having vehicle in a month and a half.
This car was bought on 05/03/2015. Between 05/07/2015 and 05/29/2015 i noticed small brown spots appear along the paint's surface of the vehicle (hood, roof, between doors). Although the spots can be removed with wax and polish process, the spots re-appear within days. Under the suspicion for corrosion, i inspected the vehicle thoroughly, noticing that the mechanical parts below the car were excessively corroded. The dealership and a mitsubishi inspector considered these conditions to be normal. The car was bought new. Having at this moment less than 500 miles of use, i considered the corrosion level to be not typical. The dealership or service center did not respond for the corroded parts or paint. Safety concern is the risk of a mechanical component premature failure due to corrosion.

4 years old, 24k miles, never in an accident. The door light came on. Driver side door misaligned. There was half an inch space between the bottom of the door and the body frame. It got more difficult to open every day. Three weeks later, the door couldn't open at all. Dealer lubricated and freed-up siezed lower door hinge, straightened, rewelded, reassembled and aligned driver's door.
