2002 Montero Sport

The front brake lines failed upon frontal impact. I am a police officer/accident investigator and i investigated an accident involving a 2002 mitsubishi montero sport. The driver of the montero impacted the rear of a vehicle ahead of her. The impact damaged the left front of the montero enough to deploy the air bags, but not enough to prevent the wheel from rolling. The impact also caused the left front brake line to break. The line broke at the point where the flexible rubber part of the line connects to the metal fitting that is attached to the inner fender well. After the impact, the brakes would not allow the driver to bring the vehicle to a stop and the vehicle then went out of control and impacted a utility pole. The second impact was on the right front of the montero and in a similar manner the right front brake line broke. I am still investigating, but it appears the brake lines would not have been damaged if the attachment point of the brake line was on the vehicle frame and not on the inner fender well. It seems when the fender well was bent in the collision that is what put stress on the rubber line and caused it to tear away leaving the vehicle without braking and preventing the driver from bringing it safely to rest.*jb

In 2007 i had the brakes to my 2003 mitsubushi montero limited replaced because i felt they my truck would not stop as desired. After having the brakes replaced it appears that the problem became worse. I took my vehicle back to the dealer and they assured me that there was nothing wrong with the brakes. In dec 2007 i tried stopping in less than 3 inches of snow. My truck would not stop, i almost had an accident. When i hit the brakes it sounded and felt like the brakes were grinding or even a crunching sound. When driving in dry conditions the brakes appear to work very well but in wet or snow conditions it does not handle at all. Since then the front brakes was again replaced in nov 2008. Again on 27 jan 2009 i tried stopping in less than 2 inches of snow and the truck did not stop. I had to drive on the curb in order to stop. I was on a residential street and was driving less than 20 miles per hour. My brakes does not work in snow conditions or even in extremely wet conditions. *tr

Defective hydraulic brake booster accumulator (nhtsa id#01v254001) on my 2001 montero caused my brakes to fail while stopping at an intersection which resulted with me rear ending another vehicle! This happened over 1 year ago and the defective part has been making a terrible sound while braking for over 2 years. Everytime i performed maintenance on my vehicle. No one could confirm what was causing this noise. I just found out today (06/08/2004) what the part is and that it's known to fail, causing crashes what happened on 03/10/2003. I was cited for "failure to yield, but contested that my brakes failed at the point of avoiding the car in front of me. I had the vehicle checked several times and no one knew what was wrong with the vehicle? The brakes would continue to fail if i came to a fast stop and i have been driving the vehicle very carefully since this accident. Luckily i came accross the nhtsa website and discovered that i had a defective part!!! Accident caused my vehicle $1,700.00 in damages and the other vehicle damage. Also (not sure $ / covered by insurance) how do i go about filing a claim for my vehicles damage of $1,700.00 and getting this part exchanged??? The mitsubishi dealer i purchased my 2001 montero from went out of business years ago. *ak

I own a 2003 diamante with about 60,000 miles on it. My windows continually fog up while driving or parked and the defroster/vents does not eliminate the fog at all, making driving very difficult and dangerous especially in rainy weather and during the nighttime. The smell of antifreeze is extremely strong inside the vehicle. I had a problem with my transmission shifting and the light around the "n" on the instrument panel was flashing. The mechanic said my heater core was leaking coolant onto the transmission control module causing it to malfunction. I was told that even though i paid for and have an extended warranty on this vehicle it would not be covered because the heater core leaking is what caused the transmission control module to fail. The heater core was replaced along with the control module and the relay with a cost of over 2,500 dollars. It seems like a problem like this that is extremely common is these vehicles, creates safety and health hazards, and very expensive to fix should be recalled and covered under warranty. *tr

I was driving my 2003 mitsubishi to work on february 5,2007, at 6:30 a.m. When, all at once i heard a groaning noise and the oil pressure light came on and the "engine failure" light also came on. The steering wheel became stiffened and just luckily i was close enough to an auto repair station/wrecker service to coast into. I called my boyfriend to come and take me to work, and he then called the mitsubishi "roadside service" number to tow it to the closest dealership to have it looked at and repaired. Later that day he called to see what the problem was and for the next couple days, they tried to blame us for 1. Low oil 2.oil not changed often enough 3. "bad" oil. When we were able to prove that none of these were true-we even threatened to send the oil to have it "tested"(we use mobil 1) they said that they didn't have the oil anymore. A couple days after they changed the oil, they somehow found the oil and said that although the oil had carbon and metal shavings in it, there was not anything wrong with the oil. Each day we called to see what was going on,the service manager "a.j." would give us a run around and would say they were running the vehicle to see how it was working. They then said , after 17 days, the vehicle was ready to leave and to run it for 1,000 miles and see if the noise goes away! *jb

In december 2002 i purchased my car (2001 mitsubishi montero sport xls 4x4) from a local private seller. The car had about 38,000 at the time and was still under the 60,000 mile manufacturers warranty. The seller insisted he did not have the records of the repairs, but did give me a spreadsheet of routine maintenance for the car. After having the car checked by my regular mechanic i bought the car despite the lack of records since it had low mileage and was still under warranty. I then drove the car and performed the routine maintenance. In december 2003 the car reached 60,000 miles and was therefore due for routine maintenance. Due to my low income while attending graduate school i could not afford to get the service done until the car reached 61,000 miles. I opted not to get the service done at the dealer because of cost. The mechanic (carolina import and domestic, 4235 capital blvd., raleigh, nc, 919-872-0350) immediately informed me the car was slipping between gears and the transmission fluid was black- meaning the transmission slipping was causing the fluid to be burned. The mechanic told me the transmission would need to be repaired soon but suggested i change the fluid every 15k in the meantime. After learning this i immediately approached the seller and requested the service records, if any, and he finally relented. The transmission fluid was changed at 38k by leith mitsubishi cary and it was black then too- demonstrating leith mitsubishi ignored the problem while the car was still under warranty. I then contacted leith mitsubishi and they said the fluid should have been changed at 30k instead of 38k which caused the transmission to fail and they would not fix the car. Following this i contacted numerous mechanics and they all agreed that changing the fluid late would not cause the transmission to fail, that the transmission was failing before the fluid needed to be changed. *ak
